Recent advances in cosmological observations have provided an unprecedented opportunity to investigate the distribution of baryons relative to the underlying matter. In this work, we robustly show that the gas is much more extended than the dark matter at 40$σ$ and the amount of baryonic feedback at $z \lesssim 1$ strongly disfavors low-feedback models such as that of state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG compared with high-feedback models such as that of the original Illustris simulation. This has important implications for bridging the gap between theory and observations and understanding galaxy formation and evolution. Furthermore, a better grasp of the baryon-dark matter link is critical to future cosmological analyses, which are currently impeded by our limited knowledge of baryonic feedback. Here, we measure the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT), stacked on the luminous red galaxy (LRG) sample of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) imaging survey. This is the first analysis to use photometric redshifts for reconstructing galaxy velocities. Due to the large number of galaxies comprising the DESI imaging survey, this is the highest signal-to-noise stacked kSZ measurement to date: we detect the signal at 13$σ$ and find that the gas is more spread out than the dark matter at $\sim$40$σ$. Our work opens up the possibility to recalibrate large hydrodynamical simulations using the kSZ effect. In addition, our findings point towards a way of alleviating inconsistencies between weak lensing surveys and cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments such as the `low $S_8$' tension, and shed light on long-standing enigmas in astrophysics such as the `missing baryon' problem.

We study spin-transfer-torque driven magnetization dynamics of a perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) nanopillar. Based on the combination of spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance and microwave spectroscopy techniques, we demonstrate that the free layer (FL) and the weak pinned reference layer (RL) exhibit distinct dynamic behaviors with opposite frequency vs. field dispersion relations. The FL can support a single coherent spin-wave (SW) mode for both parallel and antiparallel configurations, while the RL exhibits spin-wave excitation only for the antiparallel state. These two SW modes corresponding to the FL and RL coexist at an antiparallel state and exhibit a crossover phenomenon of oscillation frequency with increasing the external magnetic field, which could be helpful in the mutual synchronization of auto-oscillations for SW-based neuromorphic computing.

Primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is a key probe of the origins of primordial fluctuations in the early universe. It has been shown that multi-tracer measurements of large-scale structure can produce high-precision measurements of PNG. Future line intensity mapping surveys are well-suited to these measurements owing to their ability to rapidly survey large volumes and access the large scales at which PNG becomes important. In this paper, we explore for the first time how multi-tracer PNG measurements with intensity mapping surveys depend on the sub-galactic scale physics which drives line emission. We consider an example cross-correlation between CO maps, and quantify the impact varying the astrophysical model has on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ measurements. We find a non-trivial coupling between horizon-scale PNG measurements and the molecular cloud-scale interstellar medium that can have order unity effects on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ constraints with near-future experimental sensitivities. We discuss how these effects depend on noise level and survey design. We further find that the cross-correlation shot noise, an effect nearly unique to intensity mapping measurements, can play an important role in multi-tracer analyses and should not be neglected.

We experimentally study the dynamical modes excited by spin current in Spin Hall nano-oscillators based on the Pt/[Co/Ni] multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Both propagating spin wave and localized solitonic modes of the oscillation are achieved and controlled by varying the applied magnetic field and current. At room temperature, the generation linewidth broadening associated with mode hopping was observed at currents close to the transition between different modes and in the mode coexistence regimes. The mode hopping was suppressed at cryogenic temperatures, confirming that the coupling between modes is mediated by thermal magnons. We also demonstrate that coherent single-mode oscillations with linewidth of 5 MHz can be achieved without applying external magnetic field. Our results provide insight into the mechanisms controlling the dynamical coherence in nanomagnetic oscillators, and guidance for optimizing their applications in spin wave-based electronics.

Identifying the counterparts of submillimetre (submm) galaxies (SMGs) in multiwavelength images is a critical step towards building accurate models of the evolution of strongly star-forming galaxies in the early Universe. However, obtaining a statistically significant sample of robust associations is very challenging due to the poor angular resolution of single-dish submm facilities. Recently, a large sample of single-dish-detected SMGs in the UKIDSS UDS field, a subset of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS), was followed up with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), which has provided the resolution necessary for identification in optical and near-infrared images. We use this ALMA sample to develop a training set suitable for machine-learning (ML) algorithms to determine how to identify SMG counterparts in multiwavelength images, using a combination of magnitudes and other derived features. We test several ML algorithms and find that a deep neural network performs the best, accurately identifying 85 per cent of the ALMA-detected optical SMG counterparts in our cross-validation tests. When we carefully tune traditional colour-cut methods, we find that the improvement in using machine learning is modest (about 5 per cent), but importantly it comes at little additional computational cost. We apply our trained neural network to the GOODS-North field, which also has single-dish submm observations from the S2CLS and deep multiwavelength data but little high-resolution interferometric submm imaging, and we find that we are able to classify SMG counterparts for 36/67 of the single-dish submm sources. We discuss future improvements to our ML approach, including combining ML with spectral energy distribution-fitting techniques and using longer wavelength data as additional features.

The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxypnictide series SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.10) was investigated with high resolution powder x-ray scattering. In agreement with previous studies, the parent compound SmFeAsO exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at T$\rm{_{S}}$~=~130~K which is rapidly suppressed by $x \simeq$ 0.10 deep within the superconducting dome. The change in unit cell symmetry is followed by a previously unreported magnetoelastic distortion at 120~K. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ reveals a rich phase diagram for SmFeAsO: (i) a global minimum at 125 K corresponds to the opening of a spin-density wave instability as measured by pump-probe femtosecond spectroscopy whilst (ii) a global maximum at 110 K corresponds to magnetic ordering of the Sm and Fe sublattices as measured by magnetic x-ray scattering. At much lower temperatures than T$\rm{_{N}}$, SmFeAsO exhibits a significant negative thermal expansion on the order of -40~ppm~$\cdot$~K$^{-1}$ in contrast to the behavior of other rare-earth oxypnictides such as PrFeAsO and the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO where the onset of $α<$ 0 only appears in the vicinity of magnetic ordering. Correlating this feature with the temperature and doping dependence of the resistivity and the unit cell parameters, we interpret the negative thermal expansion as being indicative of the possible condensation of itinerant electrons accompanying the opening of a SDW gap, consistent with transport measurements.

We study the effects of electrostatic gating on the magnetization auto-oscillations induced by the local injection of electric current into a ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayer. We find that the characteristic currents required for the excitation, the intensity and the spectral characteristics of the generated dynamical states can be tuned by the voltage applied to the metallic gate separated from the bilayer by a thin insulating layer. We show that the effect of electrostatic gating becomes enhanced in the strongly nonlinear oscillation regime at sufficiently large driving currents. Analysis shows that the observed effects are caused by a combination of electric field-dependent surface anisotropy and electric field-dependent contribution to the current-induced spin-orbit torques. The demonstrated ability to control the microwave emission and spectral characteristics provides an efficient approach to the development of electrically tunable microwave nano-oscillators.

With angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the electronic structure of TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$, which is a two-leg spin ladder compound with a novel antiferromagnetic ground state. Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface is observed, indicating sizable inter-ladder hopping, which would facilitate the in-plane ferromagnetic ordering through double exchange interactions. Moreover, an energy gap is not observed at the Fermi surface in the antiferromagnetic state. Instead, the shifts of various bands have been observed. Combining these observations with density-functional-theory calculations, we propose that the large scale reconstruction of the electronic structure, caused by the interactions between the coexisting itinerant electrons and local moments, is most likely the driving force behind the magnetic transition. TaFe$_{1.23}$Te$_3$ thus provides a simpler system that contains similar ingredients as the parent compounds of iron-based superconductors, which yet could be readily modeled and understood.

We utilized microwave spectroscopy to study the magnetization oscillations locally induced in a Permalloy film by a pure spin current, which is generated due to the spin Hall effect in an adjacent Pt layer. The oscillation frequency is lower than the ferromagnetic resonance of Permalloy, indicating that the oscillation forms a self-localized nonpropagating spin-wave soliton. At cryogenic temperatures, the spectral characteristics are remarkably similar to the traditional spin-torque nano-oscillators driven by spin-polarized currents. However, the linewidth of the oscillation increases exponentially with temperature and an additional peak appears in the spectrum below the ferromagnetic resonance, suggesting that the spectral characteristics are determined by interplay between two localized dynamical states.

We systematically study the AFM order of Fe1 zigzag chains and spin-flop of excess Fe2 under high magnetic field H through the susceptibility, magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect and specific heat measurements in high-quality single crystal TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$. These properties suggest that the high temperature AFM transition of the TaFeTe$_3$ layers should be a SDW-type AFM order. Below T$_N$, Fe1 antiferromangetic zigzag chains will induce a inner magnetic field \textbf{H$_{int}$} to interstitial Fe2 and lead Fe2 also forms an AFM alignment, in which the magnetic coupling strength between Fe1 and Fe2 is enhanced by decreasing temperature. On the other hand, the external magnetic field \textbf{H$_{ext}$} inclines to tune interstitial Fe2 to form FM alignment along \textbf{H$_{ext}$}. When \textbf{H$_{ext}$} arrives at the "coercive" field H$_C$, which is able to break the coupling between Fe1 and Fe2, these interstitial Fe2 atoms take a spin-flop from AFM to FM alignment. The local moment of Fe2 is about 4 $μ_{\textrm{B}}$/Fe. From low field ($<$H$_C$) AFM to high field ($>$H$_C$) FM for Fe2, it also induces sharp drop on resistivity and an anomalous Hall effect. The possible magnetic structure of TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$ is proposed from the susceptibility and MR. The properties related to the spin-flop of Fe2 supply a good opportunity to study the coupling between Fe1 and Fe2 in these TaFe$_{1+y}$Te$_3$ or Fe$_{1+y}$Te with interstitial Fe2 compounds.

One key feature of the organic superconductors is that they have π-molecular orbitals, and the π-electron can delocalize throughout the crystal giving rise to metallic conductivity due to a π-orbital overlap between adjacent molecules. The introduction of charge into C60 solids and graphites with π-electron networks by doping to realize superconductivity has been extensively reported3,4. Very recently, superconductivity in alkali-metal doped picene with π-electron networks was reported5. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity in potassium doped Phenanthrene with TC~5 K. TC increases with increasing pressure, and the pressure of 1 GPa leads to an increase of 20% in TC, suggesting that the potassium doped phenanthrene shows unconventional superconductivity. Both phenanthrene and picene are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and contain three and five fused benzene rings, respectively. The ribbon of fused benzene rings is part of graphene. Therefore, the discovery of superconductivity in K3Phenanthrene produces a novel broad class of superconductors consisting of fused hydrocarbon benzene rings with π-electron networks. The fact that TC increases from 5 K for KxPhenanthrene with three benzene rings to 18 K for Kxpicene with five benzene rings suggests that such organic hydrocarbons with long benzene rings is potential superconductor with high TC.

It indicates the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. A sharp increase in resistivity arises from the structural transition due to Fe vacancy ordering at the temperature slightly higher than $T_{\rm N}$. Occurrence of superconductivity in an antiferromagnetic ordered state with so high $T_{\rm N}$ may suggest new physics in this type of unconventional superconductors.

We studied the correlation among structure and transport properties and superconductivity in the different $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs). Two sets of (00$l$) reflections are observed in the X-ray single crystal diffraction patterns, and arise from the intrinsic inhomogeneous distribution of the intercalated alkali atoms. The occurrence of superconductivity is closely related to the {\sl c}-axis lattice constant, and the $A$ content is crucial to superconductivity. The hump observed in resistivity seems to be irrelevant to superconductivity. There exist many deficiencies within the FeSe layers in $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$, while their $T_{\rm c}$ does not change so much. In this sense, superconductivity is robust to the Fe and Se vacancies. Very high resistivity in the normal state should arise from such defects in the conducting FeSe layers. $A_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$ = K, Rb, and Cs) single crystals show the same susceptibility behavior in the normal state, and no anomaly is observed in susceptibility at the hump temperature in resistivity. The clear jump in specific heat for Rb$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ and K$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$ single crystals shows the good bulk superconductivity in these crystals.

Two batches of single crystals $K_xFe_2Se_2$ with different transition temperatures ($T_c$) were used to study the effect of pressure. The $T_c$ of the first one gradually decreases with increasing pressure from 32.6 K at ambient pressure. While a dome-like behavior was observed for the crystal with $T_c=31.1$ K, and $T_c$ reaches its maximum value of 32.7 K at the pressure of 0.48 GPa. It indicates that there exists a optimal doping with maximum $T_c$ of 32.7K in $K_xFe_2Se_2$ system. The behavior of $T_c$ vs. pressure for $Cs_xFe_2Se_2$ also shows a dome-like behavior, and $T_c$ reaches its maximum value of 31.1 K at the pressure of 0.82 GPa. The hump observed in temperature dependence of resistivity for all the samples tends to shift to high temperature with increasing pressure. The resistivity hump could arise from the vacancy of Fe or Se.

Much larger upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ is inferred from low-temperature iso-magnetic-field magnetoresistance in these crystals than in FeSe. The anisotropy $H^{ab}_{\rm c2}$(0)/$H^{c}_{\rm c2}$(0) is around 3 for both of the two materials. Anisotropic peculiar magnetic behavior in normal state has been found for $Cs_{0.86}Fe_{1.66}Se_{2}$

Resistivity measurements show the onset superconducting transition ($T_{\rm c}$) at 32.1 K and zero resistivity at 30 K. From the low-temperature iso-magnetic-field magnetoresistance, large upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$(0) has been estimated as high as 180 T for in-plane field and 59 T for out-of-plane field. DC susceptibility indicates an antiferromagnetic transition at about 450 K. Reentrant spin-glass (RSG) behavior was found at about 130 K through DC and AC magnetic measurements. The RSG behavior suggests the existence of a strong competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions due to Fe deficiencies. Strong electron-electron correlation may exist in this material and it is possibly a candidate of parent compound for high $T_c$ superconductors.

Large in-plane resistivity anisotropy was found in the former samples, while {\it tiny} in-plane resistivity anisotropy was detected in the latter ones. When it is detected, the anisotropy starts above the structural transition temperature and increases smoothly through it. As the temperature is lowered further, the anisotropy takes a dramatic enhancement through the magnetic transition temperature. We found that the anisotropy is universally tied to the presence of non-Fermi liquid T-linear behavior of resistivity. Our results demonstrate that the nematic state is caused by electronic degrees of freedom, and the microscopic orbital involvement in magnetically ordered state must be fundamentally different between the hole and electron doped materials.

The magnetic susceptibility indicated an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at around 160K and strong anisotropic magnetic properties below T$_N$ for the former compound, which suggests a long-range canted AFM ordering. A broad maximum of the susceptibility can be observed for the two compound at high temperatures, say 360 K and 210 K respectively, suggesting that strong magnetic correlation gives rise to low-dimensional AFM or short-range ordering at high temperatures in these rare transition metal oxychalcogenides with a frustrated AFM checkerboard spin lattice.

The ESR spectrum of all the samples indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on the temperature. Moreover, the peak-to-peak linewidth shows the Korringa behavior, indicating an exchange coupling between the conduction electrons and the $Eu^{2+}$ions. The linewidth, g factor and the integrate ESR intensity show anomalies at the temperature of the spin-density-wave (SDW). The linewidth below the SDW transition does not rely on the temperature. This gives the evidence of the gap opening at the $T_{SDW}$. The slope of the linewidth is closely associated to $T_{SDW}$and $T_C$. This exotic behavior may be related to the nesting of the Fermi surface.

We systematically studied the transport properties of single crystals of $Eu_{1-x}Sr_xFe_{2-y}$Co$_{y}As_2$. Co doping can suppress the spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition, but a resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity. It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by external magnetic field (H) because a metamagnetic transition from antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism for $Eu^{2+}$ spins is induced by magnetic field. Superconductivity without resistivity reentrance shows up by partial substitution of Eu$^{2+}$ with non-magnetic Sr$^{2+}$ to completely destroy the AFM ordering of $Eu^{2+}$ spins. These results suggest that the antiferromagnetism destroys the superconductivity, while the ferromagnetism can coexist with the superconductivity in the iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors.

Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different doping levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, which was interpreted in terms of the existence of two superconducting gaps, is ubiquitous among both series of single and double layered compounds. In all compounds explored by us the zero temperature upper critical field $H_{c2}(0)$, estimated either through the Ginzburg-Landau or the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg single gap theories, strongly surpasses the weak coupling Pauli paramagnetic limiting field. This clearly indicates the strong coupling nature of the superconducting state and the importance of magnetic correlations for these materials. Our measurements indicate that the superconducting anisotropy, as estimated through the ratio of the effective masses $γ= (m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ for carriers moving along the c-axis and the ab planes, respectively, is relatively modest as compared to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, but it is temperature, field and even doping dependent. Finally, our preliminary estimations of the irreversibility field $H_m(T)$, separating the vortex-solid from the vortex-liquid phase in the single layered compounds, indicates that it is well described by the melting of a vortex lattice in a moderately anisotropic uniaxial superconductor.

We study systematically transport, susceptibility and heat capacity for BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ single crystals. In the underdoped region, spin density wave (SDW) transition is observed in both resistivity and susceptibility. The magnetic susceptibility shows unusual T-linear dependence above SDW transition up to 700 K. With Co doping, SDW ordering is gradually suppressed and superconductivity emerges with a dome-like shape. Electrical transport, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility indicate that SDW and superconductivity coexist in the sample BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ around x = 0.17, being similar with (Ba,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$. When x$>$0.34, the superconductivity completely disappears. A crossover from non-Fermi-liquid state to Fermi-liquid state is observed with increasing Co doping. A detailed electronic phase diagram about evolution from SDW to superconducting state is given.

The temperature dependence of electron spin resonance (ESR) was studied in the oxypnictide superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ (x = 0.0 and 0.13). In the samples, the ESR signal indicates that the g factor and peak-to-peak linewidth strongly depend on temperature, especially at low temperatures. It indicates a strong coupling picture with existence of local moment. The dependence mentioned above gradually attenuates, and tends to saturation around room-temperature. This behavior could be ascribed to "bottleneck" effect due to coupling of local moment and itinerant electron. In addition, a Curie-Weiss like behavior is also observed in temperature dependent integral intensity for the two samples. Our results strongly support the existence of local moments in these materials while its origin is still unclear. The results also indicate strong magnetic frustration in this system, and magnetic fluctuation mechanism for superconductivity is suggested.

The recent discovery of superconductivity in oxypnictides with the critical temperature (TC) higher than McMillan limit of 39 K (the theoretical maximum predicted by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory) has generated great excitement. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electron-phonon interaction is not strong enough to give rise to such high transition temperatures, while strong ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic fluctuations have been proposed to be responsible. However, superconductivity and magnetism in pnictide superconductors show a strong sensitivity to the lattice, suggesting a possibility of unconventional electron-phonon coupling. Here we report the effect of oxygen and iron isotopic mass on Tc and the spin-density wave (SDW) transition temperature (TSDW) in SmFeAsO1-xFx and Ba1-xKxFe2As2 systems. The results show that oxygen isotope effect on TC and TSDW is very little, while the iron isotope exponent alpha=-dlnTc/dlnM is about 0.35, being comparable to 0.5 for the full isotope effect. Surprisingly, the iron isotope exchange shows the same effect on TSDW as TCc These results indicate that electron-phonon interaction plays some role in the superconducting mechanism, but simple electron-phonon coupling mechanism seems to be rather unlikely because a strong magnon-phonon coupling is included. Sorting out the interplay between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom is a key challenge for understanding the mechanism of high-TC superconductivity.

To probe manifestations of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides, we measured the angular dependence of magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ in the mixed state of SmO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$FeAs single crystals as functions of temperature $T$ and high magnetic field $H$ up to 30 T. We show that the effective mass anisotropy parameter $γ$ extracted from $τ(θ)$, can be greatly overestimated if the strong paramagnetism of Sm or Fe ions is not properly taken into account. The correctly extracted $γ$ depends on both $T$ and $H$, saturating at $γ\simeq 9$ at lower temperatures. Neither the London penetration depth nor the superfluid density is affected by high fields fields up to the upper critical field. Our results indicate two strongly-coupled superconducting gaps of nearly equal magnitudes.

We report the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$ of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ for four different fluorine concentrations from the onset of superconductivity through the collapse of the structural phase transition. For the two more highly-doped samples, $ρ_{xy}$ is linear in magnetic field up to 50 T with only weak temperature dependence, reminiscent of a simple Fermi liquid. For the lightly-doped samples with $x<0.15$, we find a low temperature regime characterized $ρ_{xy}(H)$ being both non-linear in magnetic field and strongly temperature dependent even though the Hall angle is small. The onset temperature for this non-linear regime is in the vicinity of the structural phase (SPT)/spin density wave (SDW) transitions. The temperature dependence of the Hall resistivity is consistent with a thermal activation of carriers across an energy gap. The evolution of the energy gap with doping is reported.

We have systematically measured resistivity, susceptibility and specific heat under different magnetic fields (H) in Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. It is found that a metamagnetic transition from A-type antiferromagnetism to ferromagnetism occurs at a critical field for magnetic sublattice of $Eu^{2+}$. The jump of specific heat is suppressed and shifts to low temperature with increasing H up to the critical value, then shifts to high temperature with further increasing H. Such behavior supports the metamagnetic transition. Detailed H-T phase diagrams for x=0 and 0.15 crystals are given, and possible magnetic structure is proposed. Magnetoresistance measurements indicate that there exists a strong coupling between local moment of $Eu^{2+}$ and charge in Fe-As layer. These results are very significant to understand the underlying physics of FeAs superconductors.

The recent observation of superconductivity with critical temperatures up to 55 K in the FeAs based pnictide compounds marks the first discovery of a non copper-oxide based layered high-Tc superconductor (HTSC) [1-3]. It has raised the suspicion that these new materials share a similar pairing mechanism to the cuprates, since both exhibit superconductivity following charge doping of a magnetic parent material. Here we present a muon spin rotation study on SmFeAsO1-xFx (x=0-0.30), which shows that static magnetism persists well into the superconducting regime. The analogy with the cuprates is quite surprising since the parent compounds appear to have different magnetic ground states: itinerant spin density wave for the pnictides contrasted with the Mott-Hubbard insulator in the cuprates. Our findings suggest that proximity to magnetic order and associated soft magnetic fluctuations, rather than the strong electronic correlations in the vicinity of a Mott-Hubbard-metal-to-insulator transition, may be the key ingredients of HTSC.

We report that intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal $CaFe_2As_2$. The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is $\sim 50 $, and less than 150 of $BaFe_2As_2$, which arises from the strong coupling along c-axis due to an apparent contraction of about 0.13 nm compared to $BaFe_2As_2$. Temperature independent anisotropy indicates that the transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In sharp contrast to the case of parent compounds $ROFeAs$ (R=rare earth) and $MFe_2As_2$ (M=Ba and Sr), spin-density-wave (SDW) ordering (or structural transition) leads to a steep increase of resistivity in $CaFe_2As_2$. Such different resistivity response to SDW ordering is helpful to understand the role played by SDW ordering in Fe-based high-$T_c$ superconductors. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that observed in single crystal $BaFe_2As_2$. A linear temperature dependent susceptibility occurs above SDW transition of about 165 K. Partial substitution of Na for Ca suppresses the SWD ordering (anomaly in resistivity) and induces occurrence of superconductivity at $\sim 20$ K.

The "insulating behavior" is characterized by a log-T divergence observed over a decade in temperature. In contrast, the normal state for samples with doping x > 0.15 display metallic behavior with little magnetoresistance, where intense magnetic fields broaden the superconducting transition rather than suppress Tc. The location of the insulator-to metal crossover coincides with the reported suppression of the structural phase transition (SPT)in the phase diagram for SmFeAsO1-xFx series.

The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here we use high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction to study the structural properties of SmFeAsO1-xFx (0 < x < 0.20) in which superconductivity emerges near x ~ 0.07 and Tc increases monotonically with doping up to x ~ 0.20.8 We find that orthorhombic symmetry survives through the metal-superconductor boundary well into the superconducting regime 2 and the structural distortion is only suppressed at doping levels, x > 0.15 when the superconducting phase becomes metrically tetragonal. Remarkably this crystal symmetry crossover coincides with reported drastic anomalies in the resistivity and the Hall coefficient8 and a switch of the pressure coefficient of Tc from positive to negative,9 thereby implying that the low-temperature structure plays a key role in defining the electronic properties of these superconductors.

The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is as large as about 150, and independent of temperature. The transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In contrast to the magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples, no Curie-Weiss behavior are observed, a temperature linear dependent susceptibility occurs above spin-density-wave (SDW) transition. The susceptibility behavior is very similar to that of antiferromagnetic SDW chromium. Magnetic behavior of single crystal definitely gives evidence for existence of local moment except for the contribution to susceptibility from itinerant electrons. A resistivity minimum strongly dependent on magnetic field is observed. A log(1/T) divergency, similar to that of the underdoped cuprates, happens at low temperature. Here we first present intrinsic transport and magnetic properties, and their anisotropy from high quality single crystal.

It is found that substitution of Sr for La indeed induces the hole carrier evidenced by positive thermoelectric power (TEP), but no bulk superconductivity is observed. The superconductivity can be realized by annealing the as-grown sample in vacuum to produce the oxygen deficiency. With increasing the oxygen deficiency, the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increases and maximum $T_c$ reaches about 26 K the same as that in La(O,F)FeAs. TEP dramatically changes from positive to negative in the nonsuperconducting as-grown sample to the superconducting samples with oxygen deficiency. While $R_H$ is always negative for all samples (even for Sr-doped as grown sample). It suggests that the $La_{0.85}Sr_{0.15}O_{1-δ}FeAs$ is still electron-type superconductor.

These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicate that the TEP is negative for $BaFe_2As_2$ and La-doped $BaFe_2As_2$, indicating n-type carrier; while potassium doping leads to change of the sign in $R_H$ and TEP. It definitely indicates p-type carrier in superconducting $Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2$ with double FeAs layers, being in contrast to the case of $LnO_{1-x}F_xFeAs$ with single FeAs layer. A similar superconductivity is also observed in the sample with nominal composition $Ba_{1-x}K_xOFe_2As_2$.

The density-of-states suppression is observed with decreasing temperature in all samples, revealing two characteristic energy scales (10meV and 80meV). However, no obvious doping dependence is observed. We argue that the 10meV suppression is due to an anomalously doping-independent normal state pseudogap, which becomes the superconducting gap once in the superconducting state; and alert the possibility that the 80meV-scale suppression might be an artifact of the polycrystalline samples.

Since the discovery of superconductivity in the cuprates two decades ago, it has been firmly established that the CuO_2 plane is consequential for high T_C superconductivity and a host of other very unusual properties. A new family of superconductors with the general composition of LaFeAsO_(1-x)F_x has recently been discovered but with the conspicuous lacking of the CuO_2 planes, thus raising the tantalizing questions of the different pairing mechanisms in these oxypnictide superconductors. Intimately related to pairing in a superconductor are the superconducting gap, its value, structure, and temperature dependence. Here we report the observation of a single gap in the superconductor SmFeAsO_0.85F_0.15 with T_C = 42 K as measured by Andreev spectroscopy. The gap value of 2Delta = 13.34+/-0.3 meV gives 2Delta/k_BT_C = 3.68, close to the BCS prediction of 3.53. The gap decreases with temperature and vanishes at T_C in a manner consistent with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) prediction but dramatically different from that of the pseudogap behavior in the cuprate superconductors. Our results clearly indicate a nodeless gap order parameter, which is nearly isotropic in size across different sections of the Fermi surface, and are not compatible with models involving antiferromagnetic fluctuations, strong correlations, t-J model, and the like, originally designed for cuprates.

We present ellipsometric measurements of the far-infrared dielectric response of polycrystalline samples of the new pnictide superconductor RO0.82F0.18FeAs (R=Nd and Sm). We find evidence that the electronic properties are strongly anisotropic such that the optical spectra are dominated by the weakly conducting c-axis response similar as in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors (HTSC). Accordingly, we obtain an upper limit of the c-axis superconducting plasma frequency of $ω_{{\rm pl},c}^{\rm SC}\leq 260\cm$ which corresponds to a lower limit of the c-axis magnetic penetration depth of $λ_c\geq6\mum$ and an anisotropy of $λ_c/λ_{ab}\geq 30$ as compared to $λ_{ab}=185$ nm from muon spin rotation [A. Drew {\it et al.}, arXiv:0805.1042]. Also in analogy to the cuprate HTSC, our spectra exhibit the signatures of a gap-like suppression of the conductivity in the superconducting state with a large gap magnitude of $2Δ\approx300\cm$ (37 meV) and a ratio of $2Δ/k_{\rm B}\tc\approx8$ that is suggestive of strong coupling.

The temperature dependence of B$_{c2}$ was extracted from the specific heat curves, the corresponding B$_{c2}$(T = 0) value derived from the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula being 150 T. Based on magnetization measurements up to 9 T, a first estimation of the field dependence of the inductive critical current J$_c$ is given. Evidence for granularity is found. The presence of a peak effect is reported, suggesting a crossover in the vortex dynamics, in analogy to the behaviour observed in high T$_c$ cuprates.

Muon-spin rotation experiments were performed on the pnictide high temperature superconductor SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ with x=0.18 and 0.3. We observed an unusual enhancement of slow spin fluctuations in the vicinity of the superconducting which suggests that the spin fluctuations contribute to the formation of an unconventional superconducting state. An estimate of the in-plane penetration depth $λ_{ab}(0)=190(5)$\thinspace nm was obtained, which confirms that the pnictide superconductors obey an Uemura-style relationship between $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ and $λ_{ab}(0)^{-2}$.
