We report an ultra-low resistance superconducting joint using unreacted multifilament MgB2 wires produced by tailoring the powder compaction pressure within the joint with heat treatment conditions. The joint demonstrated an ultra-low resistance of 5.48 x 10^-15 ohms and critical current (Ic) of 91.3 A at 20 K in self-field. The microstructural and composition studies of the joint revealed cracks and a high amount of MgO, respectively. These two features reduced the Ic of the joint to some extent; nevertheless, the joint resistance was not affected by it. Our tailored joining process will play a pivotal role in superconducting joint development.

The recently discovered iron-based superconductors with very high upper critical field and small anisotropy have been regarded as a potential candidate material for high field applications. However, enhancements of superconducting properties are still needed to boost the successful use of iron-based superconductors in such applications. Here, we propose a new sheath architecture of stainless steel (SS)/Ag double sheath and investigate its influence on the microstructures and Jc-H property. We found that the transport Jc-H curves for rolled and pressed tapes both show extremely small magnetic field dependence and exceed 3*10^4A/cm^2 under 28 T, which are much higher than those of low-temperature superconductors. More interestingly, 12 cm long rolled tape shows very high homogeneity and sustains Jc as high as 7.7*10^4 A/cm^2 at 10 T. These are the highest values reported so far for iron-based superconducting wires fabricated by scalable rolling process. The microstructure investigations indicate that such high Jc was achieved by higher density of the core and uniform deformation resulting better texturing. These results indicate that our process is very promising for fabricating long Ba122 wires for high field magnet, i.e. above 20 T.

A 3 nm coronene coating and a 4 nm amorphous carbon coating with uniform shell-core encapsulation structure for nanosized boron (B) powders are formed by a simple process, where coronene is directly mixing with boron particles without a solvent, and heated at 520 °C for 1 h or at 630 °C for 3 h in a vacuum-sealed silica tube. Coronene has a melting point lower than its decomposition temperature, which enables liquid coronene to cover B particles by liquid diffusion and penetration without the need for a solvent. The diffusion and penetration of coronene can extend to the boundaries of particles and inside agglomerated nanoparticles to form a complete shell-core encapsulated structure. As the temperature is increased, thermal decomposition of coronene on the B particles results in the formation of a uniform amorphous carbon coating layer. This novel and simple nanometer-level uniform amorphous carbon coating method is possibly applied to many other powders, thus it has potential applications in many fields with low cost.

At 4.2 K, the Jc reaches a high value of 9.1x104 A/cm2 in 4 T, which is almost the practical level of 105 A/cm2. The Jc-H curve shows extremely small magnetic field dependence and keeps a high value of 6.9x104 A/cm2 in 10 T. These are the highest values reported so far for iron based superconducting wires. We also show our successful attempts of the fabrication of multi-filamentary tapes. A high Jc value of 5.3x104 A/cm2 (4.2 K, 10 T) was obtained in seven-filamentary tapes. The hardness and microstructure investigations reveal that the superior Jc in uniaxial pressed tape samples is due to the high core density, more textured grains and the change of microcrack structure. These results indicate that iron based superconductors are promising for high magnetic field applications.

We report that high transport critical current density exceeding 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 10 T can be obtained with good reproducibility for Ag sheathed (Ba,K)Fe2As2 (Ba 122) tapes by modifying the ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The process involves cycles of the cold deformation and subsequent heat treatment. The intermediate cycles of flat rolling and heat treatment produce uniform fine-grained structure, resulting in an enhancement of transport Jc in applied magnetic fields. However, the rolled tapes contain cracks running traverse to the tape axis, which still limit the current pass along the tape axis. We found that the application of uniaxial pressing with small reduction rate at the final stage is very effective to heal those cracks, resulting in an extraordinary increase of the transport Jc. We achieved the highest Jc (at 4.2 K and 10 T) of 2.1x104 A/cm2 among the PIT processed Fe based wires and tapes reported so far. The Jc-H curves measured at higher temperatures maintains a small filed dependence up to around 20 K, suggesting that the tapes are promising for applications at higher temperatures as well as in liquid helium.

The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of the amorphous FeAs, which is inevitably produced as an impurity by using high temperature sintering. Moreover, slow cooling is effective to obtain the high fluorine concentration. The compositional change from feedstock composition is quite small after this synthesis. We can reproducibly observe a record superconducting transition for an iron based superconductor at 58.1 K. This achievement of a high superconducting transition is due to the success in a large amount of fluorine substitution. A shrinking of the a lattice parameter caused by fluorine substitution is observed and the substitutional rate of fluorine changes at x =0.16.

We obtained amorphous-FeAs-free SmFeAsO1-xFx using a low temperature sintering with slow cooling. SmFeAsO1-xFx is sintered at 980 °C for 40 hours and cooled slowly down to 600 °C. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of amorphous FeAs, and the slow cooling introduces much fluorine into SmFeAsO1-xFx. The superconductivity of this sample appears at 57.8 K and the superconducting volume fraction reaches 96 %. To study the change of fluorine concentration during the cooling process, samples are quenched by water at 950 °C, 900 °C, 850 °C, 800 °C, 750 °C and 700 °C. It is found that fluorine is substituted not only at the maximum heating temperature but also during the cooling process. The low temperature sintering with slow cooling is very effective to obtain a homogeneous SmFeAsO1-xFx with high fluorine concentration.

We report the temperature dependence of the transport critical current density (Jc) in textured Sr1-xKxFe2As2/Fe (Sr122) tapes fabricated by an ex situ powder-in-tube process. Critical currents were measured in magnetic fields up to 0-15 T and/or the temperature range 4.2-30 K by using a dc four-probe method. It was found that textured Sr122 tapes heat-treated at low temperatures showed higher transport Jc performance due to much improved intergrain connections. At temperatures of 20 K, easily obtained using a cryocooler, Jc reached ~ 10^4 A/cm^2 in self field, which is the highest transport value of ferropnictide wires and tapes reported so far. Magneto-optical imaging observations further revealed significant and well distributed global Jc at 20 K in our tapes. These results demonstrate that 122 type superconducting tapes are promising for high-field applications at around 20 K.

The transport Jc (4.2 K and 10 T) of 4.4 x 103 A/cm2 (Ic =15.7 A) was obtained for a thin tape of 0.3 mm in thickness, which is the highest value reported so far for the PIT processed 122 wires and tapes with a Ag sheath and processed by a conventional route. The measurement by a hybrid magnet showed that Jc-H curve maintains very small field dependence up to the strong magnetic field of 28 T as expected from the previously reported high Hc2 value. The core of the thin tape shows dense grain structure with less cracks and voids and indicates the development of c-axis alignment, although it is still incomplete. The researches to elucidate the origin of Jc enhancement and to have further improvement of transport Jc are now ongoing. The process is simple using a Ag single sheath and, therefore, more realistic technique for long length wire production.

Polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx is mainly composed of the superconducting grains and a little of amorphous FeAs compounds. These areas randomly co-exist and amorphous areas are located between superconducting grains. Therefore, the superconducting current is prevented by the amorphous areas. In this study, it is found that indium addition to polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx removes these amorphous areas and induces the bringing together the superconducting grains. It means the total contact surfaces of grains are increased. We suggest that the enhancement of the magnetic critical current density is a direct effect of the indium addition.

A comprehensive study of the effects of carbohydrate doping on the superconductivity of MgB2 has been conducted. In accordance with the dual reaction model, more carbon substitution is achieved at lower sintering temperature. As the sintering temperature is lowered, lattice disorder is increased. Disorder is an important factor determining the transition temperature for the samples studied in this work, as evidenced from the correlations among the lattice strain, the resistivity and the transition temperature. It is further shown that the increased critical current density in the high field region can be understood by a recently-proposed percolation model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 247002]. For the critical current density analysis, the upper critical field is estimated from a correlation that has been reported in a recent review article [Supercond. Sci. Technol. 20 (2007) R47], where a sharp increase in the upper critical field by doping is mainly due to an increase in lattice disorder or impurity scattering. On the other hand, it is shown that the observed reduction in self-field critical current density is related to the reduction in the pinning force density by carbohydrate doping.

We succeeded in the fabrication of high-Jc MgB2/Fe wires applying the internal Mg diffusion (IMD) process with pure Mg core and SiC addition. A pure Mg rod with 2 mm diameter was placed at the center of a Fe tube, and the space between Mg and Fe tube was filled with B powder or the powder mixture of B-(5mol%)SiC. The composite was cold worked into 1.2mm diameter wire and finally heat treated at temperatures above the melting point of Mg(~650oC). During the heat treatment liquid Mg infiltrated into B layer and reacted with B to form MgB2. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the major phase in the reacted layer is MgB2. SEM analysis shows that the density of MgB2 layer is higher than that of usual powder-in-tube(PIT) processed wires. The wires with 5mol% SiC addition heat treated at 670oC showed Jc values higher than 105A/cm2 in 8T and 41,000A/cm2 in 10T at 4.2K. These values are much higher than those of usual PIT processed wires even compared to the ones with SiC addition. Higher density of MgB2 layer obtained by the diffusion reaction is the major cause of this excellent Jc values.

We investigated the doping effects of SWCNTs and MWCNTs on the Tc, lattice parameters, Jc(B), microstructure, and Hc2 of MgB2/Fe wire. These effects systematically showed the following sequence for Tc and the a-axis: the SWCNT doped wire < the MWshortCNT doped wire < the MWlongCNT doped wire < un-doped wire, while Jc(B) followed the sequence of the SWCNT doped wire > the MWshortCNT doped wire > the MWlongCNT doped wire > un-doped wire. A dominating mechanism behind all these findings is the level of C substitution for B in the lattice. The best Jc(B) and Hc2 were obtained on SWCNT doped wire because the level of C substitution for B in this wire is higher than all others.

We fabricated in situ powder-in-tube processed MgB2/Fe tapes using aromatic hydrocarbon of benzene, naphthalene, and thiophene as additives, and investigated the superconducting properties. We found that these aromatic hydrocarbons were very effective for increasing the Jc values. The Jc values of 20mol% benzene-added tapes reached 130A/mm2 at 4.2K and 10T. This value was almost comparable to that of 10mol% SiC-added tapes and about four times higher than that of tapes with no additions. Microstructure analyses suggest that this Jc enhancement is due to both the substitution of carbon for boron in MgB2 and the smaller MgB2 grain size.

We have succeeded in reproduction, and in the transport measurement for this 18-K phase. It is considered that the reason for the higher Tc value than the 11.5 K reported previously is not the small amount of B as the impurity element from the BN crucible. The Bc2 value at 0 K estimated from the resistivity data for the 18-K phase seems to be over 30 T. It means that the Tc and Bc2 values of the 18-K phase are as high as those of the general A15 compounds.

Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube technique by 5 at.% ZrSi2, ZrB2 and WSi2 doping, respectively. The doping effect of these compounds on the microstructure and superconducting properties of MgB2 tapes has been investigated by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transport measurements and DC susceptibility measurements. Compared to the undoped samples, Jc for all the doped samples were much improved; the best result in terms of Jc was achieved for ZrSi2 doping, by up to a factor of 3.4 at 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Moreover, these dopants did not significantly decrease the transition temperature. The Jc-B curves of WSi2-doped tapes show better performance in higher magnetic fields in comparison to undoped tapes, suggesting that pinning centers effective in a high-field region were possibly introduced.

The tape was prepared by depositing MgB2 film on a Hastelloy tape buffered with an YSZ layer. The Jc of the tape exceeds 105A/cm2 at 4.2K and 10T, which is considered as a common benchmark for magnet application. The Jc dependence on magnetic field remains surprisingly very small up to 10T, suggesting that the tape has much better magnetic field characteristic than conventional Nb-Ti wires in liquid helium.

The tapes are fabricated by using 'powder in tube' method and deformation process without any heat treatment. The tensile axial strain along tape length is successfully induced to the sample by using a U-shape holder made of stainless steel (SUS304). Two samples are examined at 4.2 K in 5 T (B is applied perpendicular to the tape surface). While the initial Ic at zero external strain state (Ic0) varies (30.4 and 33.3 A), normalized Ic (Ic/Ic0) vs. external strain relations fall on the same curve. Linear increase of Ic is observed from zero external strain state to 0.5% strain (107% of Ic0). Rapid and large degradation occurs at the strain exceeding 0.4-0.5%. High durability against stress can be expected for MgB2/stainless steel superconducting tapes.

For both tapes and wires the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu-Ni sheathed wire was lower than the stainless steel sheathed tape due to the lower packing density of MgB2.

High-density bulk materials of a newly discovered 40K intermetallic MgB2 superconductor were prepared by high pressure sintering. Superconducting transition with the onset temperature of 39K was confirmed by both magnetic and resistive measurements. Magnetization versus field (M-H) curve shows the behavior of a typical Type II superconductor and the lower critical field Hc1(0) estimated from M-H curve is 0.032T. The bulk sample shows good connection between grains and critical current density Jc estimated from the magnetization hysteresis using sample size was 2x104A/cm2 at 20K and 1T. Upper critical field Hc2(0) determined by extrapolating the onset of resistive transition and assuming a dirty limit is 18T.
