Lattice-Fluid Models derived from Density Functional Theory
Authors:

Abstract:
In the current article, we rederive the lattice-fluid excess models UNIQUAC, UNIFAC, and COSMO-RS from a continuum functional. The calculation explains the missing dependence on the particle geometry and how to include the Coulomb interaction, problems that are common to all three models. It is then shown that the Wilson ansatz, used in UNIQUAC and UNIFAC to minimize the grand potential, is not a…

In the current article, we rederive the lattice-fluid excess models UNIQUAC, UNIFAC, and COSMO-RS from a continuum functional. The calculation explains the missing dependence on the particle geometry and how to include the Coulomb interaction, problems that are common to all three models. It is then shown that the Wilson ansatz, used in UNIQUAC and UNIFAC to minimize the grand potential, is not a physically valid solution of the Euler-Lagrange equation. A consistent approach is the Larsen-Rasmussen equation, which forms the foundation of COSMO-RS. We then analyze the various approximation methods and interpret them in the framework of a molecular density functional.

The current article completes our investigation of the hard-particle interaction by determining their distribution functionals. Beginning with a short review of the perturbation expansion of the free-energy functional, we derive two representations of the correlation functionals in rooted and unrooted Mayer diagrams, which are related by a functional derivative. This map allows to transfer the mathematical methods, developed previously for unrooted diagrams, to the current representation in rooted graphs. Translating then the Mayer to Ree-Hoover diagrams and determining their automorphism groups, yields the generic functional for all r-particle distributions. From this we derive the examples of 2- and 3-particle correlations up to four intersection centers and show that already the leading order reproduces the Wertheim, Thiele, Baxter solution for the contact probability of spheres. Another calculation shows the failure of the Kirkwood superposition approximation for any r-particle correlation.

Deriving fundamental measure theory from the virial series: Consistency with the zero-dimensional limit

Abstract:
Fundamental measure theory (FMT) for hard particles has great potential for predicting the phase behavior of colloidal and nanometric shapes. The modern versions of FMT are usually derived from the zero-dimensional limit, a system of at most one particle confined in a collection of cavities in the limit that all cavities shrink to the size of the particle. In [Phys. Rev. E 85, 041150 (2012)], a de…

In [Phys. Rev. E 85, 041150 (2012)], a derivation from an approximated and resummed virial expansion was presented, whose result was not fully consistent with the FMT from the zero-dimensional limit. Here we improve upon this derivation and obtaining exactly the same FMT functional as was obtained earlier from the zero-dimensional limit. As a result, further improvements of FMT based on the virial expansion can now be formulated, some of which we suggest in the outlook.

Recently it has been shown that the heuristic Rosenfeld functional derives from the virial expansion for particles which overlap in one center. Here, we generalize this approach to any number of intersections. Starting from the virial expansion in Ree-Hoover diagrams, it is shown in the first part that each intersection pattern defines exactly one infinite class of diagrams. Determining their automorphism groups, we sum over all its elements and derive a generic functional. The second part proves that this functional factorizes into a convolute of integral kernels for each intersection center. We derive this kernel for N dimensional particles in the N dimensional, flat Euclidean space. The third part focuses on three dimensions and determines the functionals for up to four intersection centers, comparing the leading order to Rosenfeld's result. We close by proving a generalized form of the Blaschke, Santalo, Chern equation of integral geometry.

Beyond the Rosenfeld Functional: Loop Contributions in Fundamental Measure Theory
Authors:

The Rosenfeld functional provides excellent results for the prediction of the fluid phase of hard convex particle systems but fails beyond the freezing point. The Rosenfeld functional provides excellent results for the prediction of the fluid phase of hard convex particle systems but fails beyond the freezing point. The reason for this limitation is the neglect of orientational and distance correlations beyond the particle diameter. In the current article we resolve this restriction and generalize the fundamental measure theory to an expansion in intersection centers. It is shown that the intersection probability of particle systems is described by an algebra, represented by Rosenfeld's weight functions. For subdiagrams of intersection networks we derive vertex functions that provide the building blocks for the free energy functional. Their application is illustrated by deriving the Rosenfeld functional and its leading correction which is exact in the third virial order. Furthermore, the methods are used to derive an approximate functional for the infinite sum over Mayer ring diagrams. Comparing this result to the White Bear mark II functional, we find general agreement between both results.

In this article we replace the semi-heuristic derivation of the Rosenfeld functional of hard convex particles with the systematic calculation of Mayer clusters. It is shown that each cluster integral further decomposes into diagrams of intersection patterns that we classify by their loop number. This extends the virial expansion of the free-energy by an expansion in the loop order, with the Rosenfeld functional as its leading contribution. Rosenfeld's weight functions follow then from the derivation of the intersection probability by generalizing the equation of Blaschke, Santalo, and Chern. It is found that the 0-loop order can be derived exactly and reproduces the Rosenfeld functional. We further discuss the influence of particle dimensions, topologies, and geometries on the mathematical structure of the calculation.

Abstract:
The current article considers Mayer cluster integrals of n-dimensional hard particles in the n>1 dimensional flat Euclidean space. Extending results from Wertheim and Rosenfeld, we proof that the graphs are completely reducible into 1- and 2-point measures, with algebraic rules similar to Feynman diagrams in quantum field theory.
