We consider the incompressible and stationary Stokes equations on an infinite two-dimensional wedge with non-scaling invariant Navier-slip boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness and higher regularity of the Stokes problem in a certain class of weighted Sobolev spaces.
The novelty of this work is the occurrence of two different scalings in the boundary condition, which is not treated so far for the Stokes system in unbounded wedge-type domains. These difficulties are overcome by first constructing a variational solution in a second order weighted Sobolev space and subsequently proving higher regularity up to the tip of the wedge by employing an iterative scheme. We believe that this method can be used for other problems with variational structure and multiple scales.

The upper bound follows from a well-known construction for a lens-shaped elastic inclusion.

In a special case, the considered family of energies is also relevant for a variational model for thin ferromagnetic films. We derive the Gamma--limit of these functionals. We also show existence for minimizers with prescribed volume fraction. For small volume fraction, the unique, up to translation, minimizer of the limit energy is given by the ball. \end{align*} where magnetization in $e_1$-direction is globally preferred and where $M$ is an arbitrary fixed background field to ensure global neutrality of magnetic charges. We consider a material in the form a thin strip and enforce a charged domain wall by suitable boundary conditions on $m$. In the limit $ε\to 0$ and for fixed $λ> 0$, corresponding to the macroscopic limit, we show that the energy $Γ$-converges to a limit energy where jump discontinuities of the magnetization are penalized anisotropically. In particular, in the subcritical regime $λ\leq 1$ one-dimensional charged domain walls are favorable, in the supercritical regime $λ> 1$ the limit model allows for zigzaging two-dimensional domain walls.

We assume that the charges are interacting through two types of radially symmetric interaction potentials, according to their signs. We first restrict our study to the class of orthorhombic lattices. We prove that, for our energy model, the $d$-dimensional rock-salt structure is always a critical point among periodic structures of fixed density. This holds for a large class of potentials. We then investigate the minimization problem among orthorhombic lattices with an alternation of charges for inverse power laws and Gaussian interaction potentials. High density minimality results and low-density non-optimality results are derived for both types of potentials. Numerically, we investigate several particular cases in dimensions $2$, $3$ and $8$. The numerics support the conjecture that the rock-salt structure is the global optimum among all lattices and periodic charges, satisfying some natural constraints. For $d=2$, we observe a phase transition of the type 'triangular-rhombic-square-rectangular' for the minimizer's shape as the density decreases.

This paper is concerned with the diffuse interface Ohta-Kawasaki energy in three space dimensions, in a periodic setting, in the parameter regime corresponding to the onset of non-trivial minimizers. We identify the scaling in which a sharp transition from asymptotically trivial to non-trivial minimizers takes place as the small parameter characterizing the width of the interfaces between the two phases goes to zero, while the volume fraction of the minority phases vanishes at an appropriate rate. The value of the threshold is shown to be related to the optimal binding energy solution of Gamow's liquid drop model of the atomic nucleus. Beyond the threshold the average volume fraction of the minority phase is demonstrated to grow linearly with the distance to the threshold. In addition to these results, we establish a number of properties of the minimizers of the sharp interface screened Ohta-Kawasaki energy in the considered parameter regime. We also establish rather tight upper and lower bounds on the value of the transition threshold.

This paper is concerned with the macroscopic behavior of global energy minimizers in the three-dimensional sharp interface unscreened Ohta-Kawasaki model of diblock copolymer melts. This model is also referred to as the nuclear liquid drop model in the studies of the structure of highly compressed nuclear matter found in the crust of neutron stars, and, more broadly, is a paradigm for energy-driven pattern forming systems in which spatial order arises as a result of the competition of short-range attractive and long-range repulsive forces. Here we investigate the large volume behavior of minimizers in the low volume fraction regime, in which one expects the formation of a periodic lattice of small droplets of the minority phase in a sea of the majority phase. Under periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the considered energy $Γ$-converges to an energy functional of the limit "homogenized" measure associated with the minority phase consisting of a local linear term and a non-local quadratic term mediated by the Coulomb kernel. As a consequence, asymptotically the mass of the minority phase in a minimizer spreads uniformly across the domain. Similarly, the energy spreads uniformly across the domain as well, with the limit energy density minimizing the energy of a single droplets per unit volume. Finally, we prove that in the macroscopic limit the connected components of the minimizers have volumes and diameters that are bounded above and below by universal constants, and that most of them converge to the minimizers of the energy divided by volume for the whole space problem.

This paper is the continuation of [H. Knüpfer and C. B. Muratov, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. (2012, to be published)]. We investigate the classical isoperimetric problem modified by an addition of a non-local repulsive term generated by a kernel given by an inverse power of the distance. In this work, we treat the case of general space dimension. We obtain basic existence results for minimizers with sufficiently small masses. For certain ranges of the exponent in the kernel we also obtain non-existence results for sufficiently large masses, as well as a characterization of minimizers as balls for sufficiently small masses and low spatial dimensionality. The physically important special case of three space dimensions and Coulombic repulsion is included in all the results mentioned above. In particular, our work yields a negative answer to the question if stable atomic nuclei at arbitrarily high atomic numbers can exist in the framework of the classical liquid drop model of nuclear matter. In all cases the minimal energy scales linearly with mass for large masses, even if the infimum of energy may not be attained.

We consider the spreading of a thin two-dimensional droplet on a solid substrate. We use a model for viscous fluids where the evolution is governed by Darcy's Law. At the triple point where air and liquid meet the solid substrate, the liquid assumes a constant, non-zero contact angle ({\it partial wetting}). We show local and global well-posedness of this free boundary problem in the presence of the moving contact point. Our estimates are uniform in the contact angle assumed by the liquid at the contact point. In the so-called lubrication approximation (long-wave limit) we show that the solutions converge to the solution of a one-dimensional degenerate parabolic fourth order equation which belongs to a family of thin-film equations. The main technical difficulty is to describe the evolution of the non-smooth domain and to identify suitable spaces that capture the transition to the asymptotic model uniformly in the small parameter $\eps$.

This paper is concerned with a study of the classical isoperimetric problem modified by an addition of a non-local repulsive term. We characterize existence, non-existence and radial symmetry of the minimizers as a function of mass in the situation where the non-local term is generated by a kernel given by an inverse power of the distance. We prove that minimizers of this problem exist for sufficiently small masses and are given by disks with prescribed mass below a certain threshold, when the interfacial term in the energy is dominant. At the same time, we prove that minimizers fail to exist for sufficiently large masses due to the tendency of the low energy configuration to split into smaller pieces when the non-local term in the energy is dominant. In the latter regime, we also establish linear scaling of energy with mass suggesting that for large masses low energy configurations consist of many roughly equal size pieces far apart. In the case of slowly decaying kernels we give a complete characterization of the minimizers.

We investigate the ground state of a uniaxial ferromagnetic plate with perpendicular easy axis and subject to an applied magnetic field normal to the plate. Our interest is the asymptotic behavior of the energy in macroscopically large samples near the saturation field. We establish the scaling of the critical value of the applied field strength below saturation at which the ground state changes from the uniform to a branched domain magnetization pattern and the leading order scaling behavior of the minimal energy. Furthermore, we derive a reduced sharp-interface energy giving the precise asymptotic behavior of the minimal energy in macroscopically large plates under a physically reasonable assumption of small deviations of the magnetization from the easy axis away from domain walls. On the basis of the reduced energy, and by a formal asymptotic analysis near the transition, we derive the precise asymptotic values of the critical field strength at which non-trivial minimizers (either local or global) emerge. The non-trivial minimal energy scaling is achieved by magnetization patterns consisting of long slender needle-like domains of magnetization opposing the applied field
