Materials with the mesoscopic scales have provided an excellent platform for quantum-mechanical studies. Among them, the periodic oscillations of the electrical resistivity against the direct and the inverse of the magnetic fields, such as the Aharonov-Bohm effect and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect, manifest the interference of the wavefunction relevant to the electron motion perpendicular to the magnetic field. In contrast, the electron motion along the magnetic field also leads to the magnetic-field periodicity, which is the so-called Sondheimer effect. However, the Sondheimer effect has been understood only in the framework of the semiclassical picture, and thereby its interpretation at the quasiquantum limit was not clear. Here, we show that thin-film graphite exhibits clear sinusoidal oscillations with a period of about 1-3 T over a wide range of the magnetic fields (from around 10 T to 30 T), where conventional quantum oscillations are absent. In addition, the sample with a designed step in the middle for eliminating the stacking disorder effect verifies that the period of the oscillations is inversely proportional to the thickness, which supports the emergence of the Sondheimer oscillations in the quasiquantum limit. These findings suggest that the Sondheimer oscillations can be reinterpreted as inter-Landau-level resonances even at the field range where the semiclassical picture fails. Our results expand the quantum oscillation family, and pave the way for the exploration of the out-of-plane wavefunction motion.

Both electrical and thermoelectric transport measurements were performed on the same crystal to extract pure $α_{xy}$, avoiding any sample quality dependence. The $α_{xy}$ converges to a plateau in the quantum limit with a linear dependence on temperature. As an example, we discuss the weak charge ordering state in a layered organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a two-dimensional massive Dirac fermion system with a pair of tilted Dirac cones. The nonlinear AEE is a thermoelectric analogue of the nonlinear anomalous Hall effect, which is recently observed in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, and these two effects generally appear simultaneously. The nonlinear AEE generates a transverse heat current, which exhibits rectifying characteristics, namely unidirectionality even under an AC current.

These current-induced phenomena are caused by a finite Berry curvature dipole resulting from inversion symmetry breaking and Dirac cone tilting. In the actual system, however, these effects are canceled out between different types of inversion asymmetric CO domains. To avoid the cancellation, we propose a new experimental method to realize the selective formation of a single type of domain using the current-induced magnetization.

The peak effect is observed in torque-vs-field curves below the irreversibility field. It is enhanced and becomes asymmetric as the field is tilted from the $c$ axis. For field directions close to the $ab$ plane, increasing- and decreasing-field curves peak at markedly different fields, and exhibit a sharp jump, suggestive of a first-order phase transition, on the high- and the low-field side of the peak, respectively. Complicated history dependence of the torque is observed in the peak-effect region. We construct and discuss the temperature ($T$)--applied-magnetic-field ($B_a$) phase diagram. Since the upper critical field for the $ab$-plane direction is comparable to the Pauli limit, we also consider possible influence of the spin paramagnetic effect on the anomalous peak effect.

We study the near-threshold incoherent $φ$ photoproduction on the deuteron based on a model of $γN \to φN$, consisting of Pomeron, $(π, η)$ exchanges, and a $J^P = 3/2^-$ resonance, which describes the low energy $γp \to φp$ LEPS data well, including the peak in the forward differential cross section.
The calculation is done up to double rescatterings, with the spin dependence of the elementary $γN \to φN$ amplitude retained throughout the calculation. The Fermi motion and final-state interactions (FSI) are all properly treated as prescribed by realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The couplings of the resonance to $γn$ and $φn$ channels are estimated with the help of a constituent quark model. The main features of the LEPS and CLAS data are described reasonably well except for some quantitative discrepancies at very low energies and low momentum transfers regions. It is found that contributions of Fermi motion, $pn$ FSI, and resonance are all indispensable in bridging the differences between the single-scattering results and the data. The off-shell rescattering is found to be important as it cancels out a large portion of the on-shell contribution. The discrepancies at low momentum transfer region might be related to the binning size of the data. No peak is found to be associated with the weak resonance as it gets smeared out by the Fermi motion and FSI with deuterium target. The problem at very low energy region hints at the possible contributions from other mechanisms and should be investigated in depth with the use of recent high statistics $γp \to φp$ data from CLAS.

We argue that this change can be attributed to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface by the antiferromagnetic order. The negative d$T_c$/d$P$ observed in a range between $P$ $\sim$ 8 and 12 kbar may be explained by the reduction in the density of states due to the reconstruction. The ratio of the transition temperature to the effective Fermi energy remains high under high pressure: $k_BT_c/E_F$ $\sim$ 0.1 even at $P$ = 16.1 kbar.

The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically associated with the Fermi points in the field-induced quasi-one-dimensional electronic dispersion, implying that it results from the axial anomaly among these Fermi points. In its original formulation, the anomaly is predicted to violate separate number conservation laws for left- and right-handed chiral- (e.g. Weyl) fermions. Its observation in PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ suggests that the anomaly affects the transport of clean conductors, particularly near the quantum limit.

The temperature versus Fe concentration (x) phase diagram features two magnetically ordered states and four structural states below 420 K. The complexity of the phase diagram is closely related to the change in the spin and orbital degrees of freedom induced by substitution of Fe ions for Cr ions. The systematic change in the crystal structure is explained by the combined effects of Jahn-Teller distortion, spin-lattice interaction, Fe2+-Fe3+ hopping, and disorder among Fe2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ ions.

The resonance was introduced to explain an observed bump in the forward differential cross section. Within impulse approximation, we find that the Fermi motion, final state interaction, and the resonance excitation all give important contributions to improve the agreement with data. However, discrepancies remain. Contributions from $φ$ production via spectator nucleon by other mesons like $π, ρ,$ and $φ$ produced from the first nucleon need to be calculated in order to gain insight on the medium effects as well as the existence of the postulated nucleon resonance.

Despite its relatively low Tc, it displays remarkably high and anisotropic superconducting upper critical fields, e.g. mu_0 H_{c2} (T approaching 0 K). 37 T for fields applied along the crystallographic b-axis. For a field applied perpendicularly to the b-axis, mu_0 H_{c2} shows a linear dependence in temperature which coupled to a temperature-dependent anisotropy of the upper critical fields, suggests that Nb2Pd0.81S5 is a multi-band superconductor. This is consistent with band structure calculations which reveal nearly cylindrical and quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets having hole and electron character, respectively. The static spin susceptibility as calculated through the random phase approximation, reveals strong peaks suggesting proximity to a magnetic state and therefore the possibility of unconventional superconductivity.

The details of the analysis of the near-threshold bump structure in the forward differential cross section of the φ-meson photoproduction to determine whether it is a signature of a resonance are presented. The analysis is carried out in an effective Lagrangian approach which includes Pomeron and (π,η) exchanges in the t channel, and contributions from the s- and u-channel excitations of a postulated nucleon resonance. In addition to the differential cross sections, we use the nine spin-density matrix elements (SDME) as recently measured, instead of the phi-meson decay angular distributions which depend only on six SDMEs as was done before, to constrain the resonance parameters. We conclude that indeed the nonmonotonic behavior, along with the other experimental data as reported by LEPS, can only be explained with an assumption of the excitation of a resonance of spin 3/2, as previously reported. However, both parities can account for the data equally well with almost identical mass of 2.08 +/- 0.04 GeV and width of 0.501 +/- 0.117 and 0.570 +/- 0.159 for 3/2^+ and 3/2^-, respectively. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes A_{1/2}/A_{3/2} calculated from the resulting coupling constants differs in sign from that of the known D_{13}(2080). More experimental data on single and double polarization observables are needed to resolve the parity. We further find that with an assumption of large values of the OZI-evading parameters x_{OZI} = 12 for J^P = 3/2^- and x_{OZI} = 9 for J^P = 3/2^+, the discrepancy between the recent experimental data on ω-meson photoproduction and theoretical model can be considerably reduced. We argue that the large value of x_{OZI} indicates that the postulated resonance contains non-negligible amount of strangeness content.

We reexamine a recent result within a nonrelativistic constituent quark model (NRCQM) which maintains that the uuds\bar s component in the proton has its uuds subsystem in P state, with its \bar s in S state (configuration I). When the result are corrected, contrary to the previous result, we find that all the empirical signs of the form factors data can be described by the lowest-lying uuds\bar s configuration with \bar s in P state that has its uuds subsystem in $S$ state (configuration II). Further, it is also found that the removal of the center-of-mass (CM) motion of the clusters will enhance the contributions of the transition current considerably. We also show that a reasonable description of the existing form factors data can be obtained with a very small probability P_{s\bar s}=0.025% for the uuds\bar s component. We further see that the agreement of our prediction with the data for G_A^s at low-q^2 region can be markedly improved by a small admixture of configuration I. It is also found that by not removing CM motion, P_{s\bar s} would be overestimated by about a factor of four in the case when transition dominates over direct currents. Then, we also study the consequence of a recent estimate reached from analyzing the existing data on quark distributions that P_{s\bar s} lies between 2.4-2.9% which would lead to a large size for the five-quark (5q) system, as well as a small bump in both G^s_E+ηG^s_M and G^s_E in the region of q^2 =< 0.1 GeV^2.

We study whether the nonmonotonic behavior found in the differential cross section of the phi-meson photoproduction near threshold can be described by a resonance. The resonant contribution is evaluated by using an effective Lagrangian approach. We find that, with the assumption of a J^P=3/2^- resonance with mass of 2.10 \pm 0.03 GeV and width of 0.465 \pm 0.141 GeV, LEPS data can indeed be well described. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes A_1/2/A_3/2 calculated from the resulting coupling constants differs in sign from that of the known D13(2080). We further find that the addition of this postulated resonance can substantially improve the agreement between the existing theoretical predictions and the recent omega photoproduction data if a large value of the OZI evading parameter x_OZI = 12 is assumed for the resonance.

Abstract:
We study, within phenomenological Lagrangian approach, the possibility that the near-threshold peak found in the phi-photoproduction cross section is caused by a resonance. We show that, by employing a J^P=3/2^- resonance with a mass of 2.08 +/- 0.05 GeV and a width of 0.570 +/- 0.169 GeV, the LEPS data which include new data on nine spin-density matrix elements can indeed be described reasonably…

We also find that the ratio of helicity amplitudes A_1/2/A_3/2 calculated from the resulting coupling constants differs in sign from that of D13(2080). The resonance is further found to be able to improve the theoretical description of omega photoproduction against a new set of data if a large value for OZI evading parameter is assumed.

Abstract:
We reexamine, within the nonrelativistic constituent quark model (NRCQM), a recent claim that the current data on the strangeness form factors indicates that the uuds\bar{s} component in the proton is such that the uuds subsystem has the mixed spatial symmetry [31]_X and flavor spin symmetry [4]_{FS}[22]_F[22]_S, with \bar{s} in S state (configuration I). We find this claim to be invalid if corrected expressions for the contributions of the transition current to G_A^s and G_E^s are used. We show that, instead, it is the lowest-lying uuds\bar{s} configuration with uuds subsystem of completely symmetric spatial symmetry [4]_X and flavor spin symmetry [4]_{FS}[22]_F[22]_S, with \bar{s} in P state (configuration II), which could account for the empirical signs of all form factors G_E^s, G_M^s, and G_A^s. Further, we find that removing the center-of-mass motion of the clusters will considerably enhance the contributions of the transition current. We also demonstrate that it is possible to give a reasonable description of the existing form factors data with a tiny probability P_{s\bar{s}}=0.025% for the uuds\bar{s} component. We further see that with a small admixture of configuration I, the agreement of our prediction with data for G_A^s at low-q^2 region can be markedly improved. We find that without removing CM motion, P_{s\bar{s}} would be overestimated by about a factor of four in the case when transition current dominates. We also explore the consequence of a recent estimate reached from analyzing existing data on \bar{d} -\bar{u}, s +\bar{s}, and \bar{u} + \bar{d} - s -\bar{s}, that P_{s\bar{s}} lies between 2.4-2.9%. It would lead to a large size for the five-quark system and a small bump in both G_E^s+ηG_M^s and G_E^s in the region of q^2<=0.1 GeV^2 within the considered model.

We study whether the nonmonotonic behavior found in the differential cross section of the phi-meson photoproduction near threshold can be described by a resonance. Namely, we add a resonance to a model consisting of Pomeron and (pi,eta) exchange by fiat and see if, with a suitable assignment of spin and parity, mass and width, as well as the coupling constants, one would be able to obtain a good description to all the data reported by the LEPS collaboration in the low-energy region. The resonant contribution is evaluated by using an effective Lagrangian approach. We find that, with the assumption of a J^P=3/2^- resonance with mass of 2.10 +- 0.03 GeV and width of 0.465 +- 0.141 GeV, LEPS data can indeed be well described. The ratio of the helicity amplitudes A_(1/2)/A_(3/2) calculated from the resulting coupling constants differs in sign from that of the known D13(2080). We further find that the addition of this postulated resonance can substantially improve the agreement between the existing theoretical predictions and the recent omega photoproduction data if a large value of the OZI evading parameter x_OZI = 12 is assumed for the resonance.

The properties of baryon resonances are extracted from a complicated process of fitting sophisticated, empirical models to data. The reliability of this process comes from the quality of data and the robustness of the models employed. With the large of amount of data coming from recent experiments, this is an excellent time for a study of the model dependence of this extraction process. A test case is chosen where many theoretical details of the model are required, the S11 partial wave. The properties of the two lowest N* resonances in this partial wave are determined using various models of the resonant and non-resonant amplitudes.
