In vertical seismic profiling (VSP), Stoneley (tube) waves are generated due to the coupling between the borehole fluid and the surrounding poroelastic formation. The tube waves have been exploited in the past to infer the in-situ hydraulic properties. In order to understand better the physical mechanisms underlying the generation of tube waves at a fault zone, we develop a new model that calculates the pressure responses in a borehole. The model incorporates simultaneous effects of elastic impedance boundaries, fluid infiltration from poroelastic formation, and irregularities in the borehole radius. The analytical tube-wave amplitudes are derived from the new model assuming a normally incident plane P wave, verified by complete numerical solutions for Biot's theory of dynamic poroelasticity. We find that the upgoing and downgoing tube waves due to an elastic impedance boundary have opposite polarities, and those excited by a thin poroelastic layer have different wave shapes. The model also enables the prediction of a VSP response at a major fault zone in Japan (Nojima fault). Our quantitative evaluation suggests that tube waves are generated by elastic impedance boundaries and borehole irregularities around the main shear zone of the fault, as well as due to the presence of several porous layers. We also find that the modeled amplitudes agree well with the observation, especially when assuming a heterogeneous permeability distribution. The developed model and the presented results will be crucial in quantitatively interpreting the VSP data in order to estimate the fault zone's hydraulic properties.

Abstract:
To understand the role of phosphate ester dispersant, we investigated the rheology of a BaTiO$_3$ slurry. For the model case, a coarse-grain molecular dynamics (CGMD) simulation was performed with the butyral polymer didodecyl hydrogen phosphate (DHP), in the toluene/ethanol solvent. By systematically analyzing the effect of DHP from an atomic-scale first principle and from all-atom MD to micro-sc…

By systematically analyzing the effect of DHP from an atomic-scale first principle and from all-atom MD to micro-scale CGMD simulation, we investigated how the adsorption of a DHP dispersant on a BaTiO$_3$ surface affects the microstructure rheology of a BaTiO$_3$ slurry. The first-principle and all-atom MD simulation suggests that DHP molecules prefer to locate near the BaTiO$_3$ surface. CGMD simulation shows a reduction in viscosity with an increase in dispersants, suggesting that the dispersant population near the BaTiO$_3$ surface plays a key role in controlling the rheology of the BaTiO$_3$ slurry. In this study, we propose an approach for understanding the BaTiO$_3$ slurry with molecular-level simulations, which would be a useful tool for efficient optimization of slurry preparation.

Cooperative growth of the structure units (SUs) in a 14H type long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) structure has been observed, and there is no obvious accumulation of transformation strain at the growth fronts. The atomic structures at this front are further characterized by Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, and the partial dislocations associated SUs are uniquely defined based on the observations at different zone axes. It is found that the Burgers vectors of neighbouring partials are alternatively opposed so that the transformation strain is self-accommodated. Furthermore, this self-accommodation mechanism is rationalized by the elastic interaction energy for combinations of different partials.

Background and Purpose: We aimed to develop and evaluate an automatic acute ischemic stroke-related (AIS) detection system involving a two-stage deep learning model.
Methods: We included 238 cases from two different institutions. AIS-related findings were annotated on each of the 238 sets of head CT images by referring to head magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images in which an MRI examination was performed within 24 h following the CT scan. These 238 annotated cases were divided into a training set including 189 cases and test set including 49 cases. Subsequently, a two-stage deep learning detection model was constructed from the training set using the You Only Look Once v3 model and Visual Geometry Group 16 classification model. Then, the two-stage model performed the AIS detection process in the test set. To assess the detection model's results, a board-certified radiologist also evaluated the test set head CT images with and without the aid of the detection model. The sensitivity of AIS detection and number of false positives were calculated for the evaluation of the test set detection results. The sensitivity of the radiologist with and without the software detection results was compared using the McNemar test. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: For the two-stage model and radiologist without and with the use of the software results, the sensitivity was 37.3%, 33.3%, and 41.3%, respectively, and the number of false positives per one case was 1.265, 0.327, and 0.388, respectively. On using the two-stage detection model's results, the board-certified radiologist's detection sensitivity significantly improved (p-value = 0.0313).
Conclusions: Our detection system involving the two-stage deep learning model significantly improved the radiologist's sensitivity in AIS detection.

The G.P. Zone consists of three atomic layers paralleling to (0001) plane of Mg matrix, where two outer layers enrich with Gd while the middle layer enriches with Zn. Moreover, it is found that most of the structures reported previously are unstable and should converge to the present result after atomic relaxation, even though the atomic species and positions in the middle layer vary in those models.

We report observation of 90-degree ferroelectric domain structures in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of epitaxially-grown films of PbTiO3. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on first-principles effective Hamiltonian of bulk PbTiO3, we corroborate the occurance of such domains showing that it arises as metastable states only in cooling simulations (as the temperature is lowered) and establish characteristic stability of 90-degree domain structures in PbTiO3. In contrast, such domains do not manifest in similar simulations of BaTiO3. Through a detailed analysis based on energetics and comparison between PbTiO3 and BaTiO3, we find that 90-degree domain structures are energetically favorable only in the former, and the origin of their stability lies in the polarization-strain coupling. Our analysis suggests that they may form in BaTiO3 due to special boundary condition and/or defect-related inhomogeneities.
