We synthesize thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) colloidal microgel particles of different stiffnesses by controlling the concentration of crosslinker in a one-pot synthesis method. We employ oscillatory rheology and cryogenic scanning electron microscopy to study the temperature and stiffness-induced mechanical properties and microscopic structures of dense aqueous suspensions of the synthesized PNIPAM microgels. Using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we show that particle hydrophobicity increases with increasing suspension temperature and decreasing particle stiffness. Our zeta potential measurements of soft PNIPAM particles and those of intermediate stiffnesses demonstrate that these particles are electrostatically unstable and prone to aggregation even at temperatures below the lower consolute solution temperature (LCST). In contrast, stiff PNIPAM particles in dilute aqueous suspensions are electrostatically stabilized at all temperatures explored in this study. Interestingly, our frequency and strain amplitude sweep rheology experiments reveal that the linear viscoelastic moduli and yield stresses of all the PNIPAM suspensions increase when the temperature is raised above the LCST. Combining cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) and rheology, we demonstrate that dense suspensions of soft PNIPAM microgels show a gel-liquid-gel transition with increase in temperature across the LCST. Suspensions of stiff particles, in contrast, exhibit a glass-glass transition under the same temperature sweep conditions and do not pass through an intermediate liquid state.

The improvement in the fabrication techniques of iron-based superconductors have made these materials real competitors of high temperature superconductors and MgB$_2$. In particular, iron-chalcogenides have proved to be the most promising for the realization of high current carrying tapes. But their use on a large scale cannot be achieved without the understanding of the current stability mechanisms in these compounds. Indeed, we have recently observed the presence of flux flow instabilities features in Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF$_2$. Here we present the results of current-voltage characterizations at different temperatures and applied magnetic fields on Fe(Se,Te) microbridges grown on CaF$_2$. These results will be analyzed from the point of view of the most validated models with the aim to identify the nature of the flux flow instabilities features (i.e., thermal or electronic), in order to give a further advance to the high current carrying capability of iron-chalcogenide superconductors.

We report the first experimental observation of the quenching of the superconducting state in current-voltage characteristics of an iron-based superconductor, namely, in FeSeTe thin films. Based on available theoretical models, our analysis suggests the presence of an intrinsic flux-flow electronic instability along with non-negligible extrinsic thermal effects. The coexistence and competition of these two mechanisms classify the observed instability as halfway between those of low-temperature and of high-temperature superconductors, where thermal effects are respectively largely negligible or predominant.

Abstract:
We report an infrared spectroscopy study of a 200 nm thick FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ film grown on LaAlO$_3$ with T$_c$=13.7 K. We analyze the 20 K normal state absolute reflectance R$_N$ measured over a broad infrared range and the reflectance ratio R$_S$/R$_N$, R$_S$ being the superconducting state reflectance, measured at 6 K in the terahertz range down to 12 cm$^{-1}$. We show that the normal state model conductivity is given by two Drude components, one of which much broader and intense than the other. In the superconducting state, we find that a gap $Δ$=37$\pm$3 cm$^{-1}$ opens up in the narrow Drude band only, while the broad Drude band results to be ungapped, at least in the explored spectral range. Our results show that only a two-band model can coherently describe both normal and superconducting state data.

Promising results reported in our previous works led us to think that production of B powder plays a crucial role in MgB2 synthesis. A new method for boron preparation has been developed in our laboratory. This particular process is based on magnesiothermic reaction (Moissan process) with the addition of an initial step that gives boron powder with nano-metric grain size. In this paper we report our efforts regarding optimization of PIT method for these nanometric powders and the resolution of problems previously highlighted such as the difficulty in powder packaging and the high friction phenomena occurring during cold working. This increases cracking during the tape and wire manufacturing leading to its failure. Packaging problems are related to the amorphous nature of boron synthesized in our laboratory, so a crystallization treatment was applied to improve crystallinity of B powder. To prevent excessive friction phenomena we synthesized non-stoichiometric MgB2 and using magnesium as lubricant. Our goal is the Jc improvement, but a global physical-chemical characterization was also made to analyze the improvement given by our treatments: this characterization includes X-ray diffraction, resistivity vs. temperature measurement, SEM image, besides magnetic and transport Jc measurements.

We report on the isotropic pinning obtained in epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF2 (001) substrate. High critical current density values larger than 1 MA/cm2 in self field in liquid helium are reached together with a very weak dependence on the magnetic field and a complete isotropy. Analysis through Transmission Electron Microscopy evidences the presence of defects looking like lattice disorder at a very small scale, between 5 and 20 nm, which are thought to be responsible for such isotropic behavior in contrast to what observed on SrTiO3, where defects parallel to the c-axis enhance pinning in that direction
