ITER envisages the use of two heating neutral beam injectors plus an optional one as part of the auxiliary heating and current drive system. The 16.5 MW expected neutral beam power per injector is several notches higher than worldwide existing facilities. A Neutral Beam Test Facility (NBTF) was established at Consorzio RFX, exploiting the synergy of two test beds, SPIDER and MITICA. SPIDER is dedicated to developing and characterizing large efficient negative ion sources at relevant parameters in ITER-like conditions: source and accelerator located in the same vacuum where the beam propagates, immunity to electromagnetic interferences of multiple radio-frequency (RF) antennas, avoidance of RF-induced discharges on the outside of the source. Three years of experiments on SPIDER have addressed to the necessary design modifications to enable full performances. The source is presently under a long shut-down phase to incorporate learnings from the experimental campaign. Parallelly, developments on MITICA, the full-scale prototype of the ITER NBI featuring a 1 MV accelerator and ion neutralization, are underway including manufacturing of in-vessel components, while power supplies and auxiliary plants are already under final testing and commissioning. Integration, commissioning and tests of the 1MV power supplies are essential for this first-of-kind system, unparalleled both in research and industry field. The integrated test to confirm 1MV output by combining invertor systems, DC generators and transmission lines extracted errors/accidents in some components. To realize a concrete system for ITER, solutions for the repair and the improvement of the system were developed. Hence, NBTF is emerging as a necessary facility, due to the large gap with existing injectors, effectively dedicated to identify issues and find solutions to enable successful ITER NBI operations in a time bound fashion.

Moiré superlattice created by twist stacking has multiple physical properties. These physical properties depend on the twist angle, hence investigation of the twist angle dependency is important for the deep understanding of physical phenomena in moiré superlattice. In this work, negative magnetoresistance owing to weak localization (WL) was investigated in twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) as a function of the twist angle. The ratio of the intervalley scattering time to the intravalley scattering time, estimated using the WL formula for bilayer graphene, tended to decrease as the twist angle increased. This feature is qualitatively explained by the enhancement of intervalley scattering due to the reduction of the intervalley distance in the moiré Brillouin zone (BZ) of the TDBG. This indicates that WL in the TDBG occurs for the moiré superlattice with the reconstructed BZ.

Quantifying the correlation between the complex structures of amorphous materials and their physical properties has been a long-standing problem in materials science. In amorphous Si, a representative covalent amorphous solid, the presence of a medium-range order (MRO) has been intensively discussed. However, the specific atomic arrangement corresponding to the MRO and its relationship with physical properties, such as thermal conductivity, remain elusive. Here, we solve this problem by combining topological data analysis, machine learning, and molecular dynamics simulations. By using persistent homology, we constructed a topological descriptor that can predict the thermal conductivity. Moreover, from the inverse analysis of the descriptor, we determined the typical ring features that correlated with both the thermal conductivity and MRO. The results provide an avenue for controlling the material characteristics through the topology of nanostructures.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to obtain rigorous numerical enclosures for solutions of Lane-Emden's equation $-Δu=|u|^{p-1} u$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove the existence of a nondegenerate solution $u$ nearby a numerically computed approximation $\hat{u}$ together with an explicit error bound, i.e., a bound for the difference between $ u $ and $\hat{u}$. In particular, we focus on the sub-square case in which $1<p<2$ so that the derivative $p|u|^{p-1}$ of the nonlinearity $|u|^{p-1} u$ is not Lipschitz continuous. In this case, it is problematic to apply the classical Newton-Kantorovich theorem for obtaining the existence proof, and moreover several difficulties arise in the procedures to obtain numerical integrations rigorously. We design a method for enclosing the required integrations explicitly, proving the existence of a desired solution based on a generalized Newton-Kantorovich theorem. A numerical example is presented where an explicit solution-enclosure is obtained for $ p=3/2 $ on the unit square domain $Ω=(0,1)^2$.

Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) is a versatile common-use optical instrument for the 8.2m Subaru Telescope, offering imaging and spectroscopic observations. FOCAS employs grisms with resolving powers ranging from 280 to 8200 as dispersive optical elements. A grism is a direct-vision grating composed of a transmission grating and prism(s). FOCAS has five grisms with replica surface-relief gratings including an echelle-type grism, and eight grisms with volume-phase holographic (VPH) gratings. The size of these grisms is 110 mm X 106 mm in aperture with a maximum thickness of 110 mm. We employ not only the dichromated gelatin, but also the hologram resin as a recording material for VPH gratings. We discuss the performance of these FOCAS grisms measured in the laboratory, and verify it by test observations, and show examples of astronomical spectroscopic observations.
