Unconventional superconductivity has long been believed to arise from a lab-grown correlated electronic system. Here we report compelling evidence of unconventional nodal superconductivity in a mineral superconductor \rhs. We investigated the temperature-dependent London penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ and disorder evolution of the critical temperature $T_c$ and upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ in synthetic miassite \rhs. We found a power-law behavior of $Δλ(T)\sim T^n$ with $n\approx 1.1$ at low temperatures below $0.3T_c$ ($T_c$ = 5.4 K), which is consistent with the presence of lines of the node in the superconducting gap of \rhs. The nodal character of the superconducting state in \rhs~was supported by the observed pairbreaking effect in $T_c$ and $H_{c2}(T)$ in samples with the controlled disorder that was introduced by low-temperature electron irradiation. We propose a nodal sign-changing superconducting gap in the $A_{1g}$ irreducible representation, which preserves the cubic symmetry of the crystal and is in excellent agreement with the superfluid density, $λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$.

Measurements of temperature-dependent resistance and magnetization under hydrostatic pressures up to 2.13 GPa are reported for single-crystalline, superconducting BaBi$_3$. A temperature - pressure phase diagram is determined and the results suggest three different superconducting phases $α$, $β$, and $γ$ in the studied pressure range. We further show that occurrence of the three superconducting phases is intuitively linked to phase transitions at higher temperature which are likely first order in nature. $T_p$, which separates phase $α$ from $β$ and $γ$, is associated with an abrupt resistance change as pressure is increased from 0.27 GPa to 0.33 GPa. Above 0.33 GPa, an "S-shape" anomaly in the temperature-dependent resistance curve, $T_\text S$, is observed and associated with the transition between the $β$ and $γ$ phases. Further increasing of pressure above 1.05 GPa suppresses this transition and BaBi$_3$ stays in $γ$ phase over the whole investigated temperature range. These high-temperature anomalies are likely related to structural degrees of freedom. With the $α$ phase being the ambient-pressure tetragonal structure ($P4/mmm$), our first-principle calculations suggest the $β$ phase to be cubic structure ($Pm-3m$) and the $γ$ phase to be a distorted tetragonal structure where the Bi atoms are moved out of the face-centered position. Finally, an analysis of the evolution of the superconducting upper critical field with pressure further confirms these transitions in the superconducting state and suggests a possible change of band structure or a Lifshitz transition near 1.54 GPa in $γ$ phase. Given the large atomic numbers of both Ba and Bi, our results establish BaBi$_3$ as a good candidate for the study of the interplay of structure with superconductivity in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling.

We present the electrical resistivity data under application of pressures up to $\sim$ 26 GPa and down to 50 mK temperatures on YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$. We find a pressure induced magnetic phase transition with an onset at $p_c$=18.2$\pm$0.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ manifests a heavy fermion, nonmagnetic ground state and the Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures. As pressure is increased, the power law exponent in resistivity, $n$, deviates significantly from Fermi liquid behavior and tends to saturate with $n$ = 1 near $p_c$. A pronounced resistivity maximum, $T_\text{max}$, which scales with Kondo temperature is observed. $T_\text{max}$ decreases with increasing pressure and flattened out near $p_c$ indicating the suppression of Kondo exchange interaction. For $p>p_c$, $T_\text{max}$ shows a sudden upward shift, most likely becoming associated with crystal electric field scattering. Application of magnetic field for $p>p_c$ broadens the transition and shifts it toward the higher temperature, which is a typical behavior of the ferromagnetic transition. The magnetic transition appears to abruptly develop above $p_c$, suggesting probable first-order (with changing pressure) nature of the transition; once stabilized, the ordering temperature does not depend on pressure up to $\sim$ 26 GPa. Taken as a whole, these data suggest that YbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ has a quantum phase transition at $p_c$ = 18.2 GPa associated with the avoided quantum criticality in metallic ferromagnets.

The pressure dependence of the magnetic and superconducting transitions, as well as that of the superconducting upper critical field is reported for CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_4$As$_4$, the first example of an Fe-based superconductor with spin-vortex-crystal-type magnetic ordering. Resistance measurements were performed on single crystals with two substitution levels ($x=0.033, 0.050$) under hydrostatic pressures up to 5.12 GPa and in magnetic fields up to 9 T. Our results show that, for both compositions, magnetic transition temperatures, $T_\textrm{N}$, are suppressed upon applying pressure, the superconducting transition temperatures $T_\textrm{c}$ are suppressed by pressure as well, except for $x=0.050$ in the pressure region where $T_\textrm{N}$ and $T_\textrm{c}$ cross. Furthermore, the pressure associated with the crossing of the $T_\textrm{N}$ and $T_\textrm{c}$ lines also coincides with a minimum in the normalized slope of the superconducting upper critical field, consistent with a likely Fermi-surface reconstruction associated with the loss of magnetic ordering. Finally, at $p \sim$ 4 GPa, both Ni-substituted CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_4$As$_4$ samples likely go through a half-collapsed-tetragonal (hcT) phase transition, similar to the parent compound CaKFe$_4$As$_4$.

We report the temperature-pressure-magnetic field phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice CeTiGe$_3$ determined by means of electrical resistivity measurements. Measurements up to $\sim$ 5.8 GPa reveal a rich phase diagram with multiple phase transitions. At ambient pressure, CeTiGe$_3$ orders ferromagnetically at $T_\text{C}$ = 14 K. Application of pressure suppresses $T_\text{C}$, but a pressure induced ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of two new successive transitions for $p$ $>$ 4.1 GPa that are probably antiferromagnetic in nature. These two transitions are suppressed under pressure, with the lower temperature phase being fully suppressed above 5.3 GPa. The critical pressures for the presumed quantum phase transitions are $p_1$ $\cong$ 4.1 GPa and $p_2$ $\cong$ 5.3 GPa. Above 4.1 GPa, application of magnetic field shows a tricritical point evolving into a wing structure phase with a quantum tricritical point at 2.8 T at 5.4 GPa, where the first order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition changes into the second order antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic transition.

The pressure dependence of the structural, magnetic and superconducting transitions and of the superconducting upper critical field were studied in sulfur-substituted Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$). Resistance measurements were performed on single crystals with three substitution levels ($x$=0.043, 0.096, 0.12) under hydrostatic pressures up to 1.8 GPa and in magnetic fields up to 9 T, and compared to data on pure FeSe. Our results illustrate the effects of chemical and physical pressure on Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$). On increasing sulfur content, magnetic order in the low-pressure range is strongly suppressed to a small dome-like region in the phase diagrams. However, $T_s$ is much less suppressed by sulfur substitution and $T_c$ of Fe(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$) exhibits similar non-monotonic pressure dependence with a local maximum and a local minimum present in the low pressure range for all $x$. The local maximum in $T_c$ coincides with the emergence of the magnetic order above $T_c$. At this pressure the slope of the upper critical field decreases abruptly. The minimum of $T_c$ correlates with a broad maximum of the upper critical field slope normalized by $T_c$.

We measure the superconducting gap of Rh$_9$In$_4$S$_4$, finding $Δ\approx 0.33$meV and image a hexagonal vortex lattice up to close to H$_{c2}$, observing slow vortex creep at temperatures as low as 150 mK. We estimate thermal and quantum barriers for vortex motion and show that thermal fluctuations likely cause vortex creep, in spite of being at temperatures $T/T_c<0.1$. We study creeping vortex lattices by making images during long times and show that the vortex lattice remains hexagonal during creep with vortices moving along one of the high symmetry axis of the vortex lattice. Furthermore, the creep velocity changes with the scanning window suggesting that creep depends on the local arrangements of pinning centers. Vortices fluctuate on small scale erratic paths, indicating that the vortex lattice makes jumps trying different arrangements during its travel along the main direction for creep. The images provide a visual account of how vortex lattice motion maintains hexagonal order, while showing dynamic properties characteristic of a glass.

We report the temperature-pressure phase diagram of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ established using high pressure electrical resistivity, magnetization and high energy x-ray diffraction measurements up to 6 GPa. With increasing pressure, both resistivity and magnetization data show that the bulk superconducting transition of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is suppressed and then disappears at $p$ $\gtrsim$ 4 GPa. High pressure x-ray data clearly indicate a phase transition to a collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure that coincides with the abrupt loss of bulk superconductivity near 4 GPa. The x-ray data, combined with resistivity data, indicate that the collapsed tetragonal transition line is essentially vertical, occuring at 4.0(5) GPa for temperatures below 150 K. Band structure calculations also find a sudden transition to a collapsed tetragonal state near 4 GPa, as As-As bonding takes place across the Ca-layer. Bonding across the K-layer only occurs for $p$ $\geq$ 12 GPa. These findings demonstrate a new type of collapsed tetragonal phase in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$: a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase.

Both compounds have an orthorhombic crystal structure. ZrMnP and HfMnP are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures around $370$~K and $320$~K respectively. The spontaneous magnetizations of ZrMnP and HfMnP are determined to be $1.9$~$μ_\textrm{B}$/f.u. and $2.1$~$μ_\textrm{B}$/f.u. respectively at $50$~K. The magnetocaloric effect of ZrMnP in term of entropy change ($ΔS$) is estimated to be $-6.7$ kJm$^{-3}$K$^{-1}$ around $369$~K. The easy axis of magnetization is [100] for both compounds, with a small anisotropy relative to the [010] axis. At $50$~K, the anisotropy field along the [001] axis is $\sim4.6$~T for ZrMnP and $\sim10$~T for HfMnP. Such large magnetic anisotropy is remarkable considering the absence of rare-earth elements in these compounds. The first principle calculation correctly predicts the magnetization and hard axis orientation for both compounds, and predicts the experimental HfMnP anisotropy field within 25 percent. More importantly, our calculations suggest that the large magnetic anisotropy comes primarily from the Mn atoms suggesting that similarly large anisotropies may be found in other 3d transition metal compounds.

We determined on the temperature-pressure-magnetic field ($T$-$p$-$H$) phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe$_3$ from electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals. In ferromagnetic systems, quantum criticality is avoided either by a change of the transition order, becoming of the first order at a tricritical point, or by the appearance of modulated magnetic phases. In the first case, the application of a magnetic field reveals a wing-structure phase diagram as seen in itinerant ferromagnets such as ZrZn$_2$ and UGe$_2$. In the second case, no tricritical wings have been observed so far. Our investigation of LaCrGe$_3$ reveals a double-wing structure indicating strong similarities with ZrZn$_2$ and UGe$_2$. But, unlike these, simpler systems, LaCrGe$_3$ is thought to exhibit a modulated magnetic phase under pressure which already precludes it from a pressure-driven paramagnetic-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in zero field. As a result, the $T$-$p$-$H$ phase diagram of LaCrGe$_3$ shows both the wing structure as well as the appearance of new magnetic phases, providing the first example of this new possibility for the phase diagram of metallic quantum ferromagnets.

Systematic measurements of temperature dependent magnetization, resistivity and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) at ambient pressure as well as resistivity under pressures up to 5.25 GPa were conducted on single crystals of CrAuTe$_4$. Magnetization data suggest that magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic $c$-axis below $T_\textrm{N}$ = 255 K. ARPES measurements show band reconstruction due to the magnetic ordering. Magnetoresistance data show clear anisotropy, and, at high fields, quantum oscillations. The Neel temperature decreases monotonically under pressure, decreasing to $T_\textrm{N}$ = 236 K at 5.22 GPa. The pressure dependencies of (i) $T_\textrm{N}$, (ii) the residual resistivity ratio, and (iii) the size and power-law behavior of the low temperature magnetoresistance all show anomalies near 2 GPa suggesting that there may be a phase transition (structural, magnetic, and/or electronic) induced by pressure. For pressures higher than 2 GPa a significantly different quantum oscillation frequency emerges, consistent with a pressure induced change in the electronic states.

The temperature-pressure phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe$_3$ is determined for the first time from a combination of magnetization, muon-spin-rotation and electrical resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed near $2.1$~GPa, but quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of a magnetic phase, likely modulated, AFM$_Q$. Our density functional theory total energy calculations suggest a near degeneracy of antiferromagnetic states with small magnetic wave vectors $Q$ allowing for the potential of an ordering wave vector evolving from $Q=0$ to finite $Q$, as expected from the most recent theories on ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Our findings show that LaCrGe$_3$ is a very simple example to study this scenario of avoided ferromagnetic quantum criticality and will inspire further study on this material and other itinerant ferromagnets.

Single crystalline, single phase CaKFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ has been grown out of a high temperature, quaternary melt. Temperature dependent measurements of x-ray diffraction, anisotropic electrical resistivity, elastoresistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall effect, magnetization and specific heat, combined with field dependent measurements of electrical resistivity and field and pressure dependent measurements of magnetization indicate that CaKFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ is an ordered, stoichiometric, Fe-based superconductor with a superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$ = 35.0 $\pm$ 0.2 K. Other than superconductivity, there is no indication of any other phase transition for 1.8 K $\leq T \leq$ 300 K. All of these thermodynamic and transport data reveal striking similarities to that found for optimally- or slightly over-doped (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$, suggesting that stoichiometric CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is intrinsically close to what is referred to as "optimal-doped" on a generalized, Fe-based superconductor, phase diagram. The anisotropic superconducting upper critical field, $H_{c\text{2}}(T)$, of CaKFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ was determined up to 630 kOe. The anisotropy parameter $γ(T)=H_{c\text{2}}^{\perp}/H_{c\text{2}}^{\|}$, for $H$ applied perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, decreases from $\simeq 2.5$ at $T_c$ to $\simeq 1.5$ at 25 K which can be explained by interplay of paramagnetic pairbreaking and orbital effects. The slopes of $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\|}/dT\simeq-44$ kOe/K and $dH_{c\text{2}}^{\perp}/dT \simeq-109$ kOe/K at $T_c$ yield an electron mass anisotropy of $m_{\perp}/m_{\|}\simeq 1/6$ and short Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths $ξ_{\|}(0)\simeq 5.8 \textÅ$ and $ξ_{\perp}(0)\simeq 14.3 \textÅ$. The value of $H_{c\text{2}}^{\perp}(0)$ can be extrapolated to $\simeq 920$ kOe, well above the BCS paramagnetic limit.

The synthesis and crystallographic, thermodynamic and transport properties of single crystalline Rh$_{9}$In$_4$S$_4$ were studied. The resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements all clearly indicate bulk superconductivity with a critical temperature, $T_{c}\sim$ 2.25 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ and the Debye temperature($\varTheta_{\textrm{D}}$) were found to be 34 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and 217 K respectively. The observed specific heat jump, $ΔC/γT_{c}$ = 1.66, is larger than the expected BCS weak coupling value of 1.43. Ginzburg-Landau (GL) ratio of the low temperature GL-penetration depth, $λ_\text{GL}$$\approx$ 5750Å, to the GL-coherence length, $ξ_\text{GL}$$\approx$ 94Å, is large: $κ$ $\sim$ 60. Furthermore, we observed a peak effect in the resistivity measurement as a function of both temperature and magnetic field.

The pressure dependence of the upper critical field, $H_\textrm{c2,c}$, of single crystalline FeSe was studied using measurements of the inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_{\textrm{c}}$ in magnetic fields parallel to tetragonal $c$-axis. $H_\textrm{c2,c}(T)$ curves obtained under hydrostatic pressures up to $1.56$ GPa, the range over which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\textrm{c}$, of Fe…

The pressure dependence of the upper critical field, $H_\textrm{c2,c}$, of single crystalline FeSe was studied using measurements of the inter-plane resistivity, $ρ_{\textrm{c}}$ in magnetic fields parallel to tetragonal $c$-axis. $H_\textrm{c2,c}(T)$ curves obtained under hydrostatic pressures up to $1.56$ GPa, the range over which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_\textrm{c}$, of FeSe exhibits a non-monotonic dependence with local maximum at $p_1\approx$ 0.8 GPa and local minimum at $p_2\approx$ 1.2 GPa. The slope of the upper critical field at $T_\textrm{c}$, $\left(\textrm{d}H_\text{c2,c}/\textrm{d}T\right)_{T_\textrm{c}}$, also exhibits a non-monotonic pressure dependence with distinct changes at $p_1$ and $p_2$. For $p<p_1$ the slope can be described within multi-band orbital model. For both $p_1<p <p_2$ and $p>p_2$ the slope is in good quantitative agreement with a single band, orbital Helfand-Werthamer theory with Fermi velocities determined from Shubnikov-de Haas measurements. This finding indicates that Fermi surface changes are responsible for the local minimum of $T_\textrm{c}(p)$ at $p_2\approx$ 1.2 GPa.

We present high-energy x-ray diffraction data under applied pressures up to p = 29 GPa, neutron diffraction measurements up to p = 1.1 GPa, and electrical resistance measurements up to p = 5.9 GPa, on SrCo2As2. Our x-ray diffraction data demonstrate that there is a first-order transition between the tetragonal (T) and collapsed-tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset above approximately 6 GPa at T = 7 K. The pressure for the onset of the cT phase and the range of coexistence between the T and cT phases appears to be nearly temperature independent. The compressibility along the a-axis is the same for the T and cT phases whereas, along the c-axis, the cT phase is significantly stiffer, which may be due to the formation of an As-As bond in the cT phase. Our resistivity measurements found no evidence of superconductivity in SrCo2As2 for p <= 5.9 GPa and T >= 1.8 K. The resistivity data also show signatures consistent with a pressure-induced phase transition for p >= 5.5 GPa. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements performed up to 1.1 GPa in the T phase found no evidence of stripe-type or A-type antiferromagnetic ordering down to 10 K. Spin-polarized total-energy calculations demonstrate that the cT phase is the stable phase at high pressure with a c/a ratio of 2.54. Furthermore, these calculations indicate that the cT phase of SrCo2As2 should manifest either A-type antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order.

Solution growth of single crystals from high temperature solutions often involves the separation of residual solution from the grown crystals. For many growths of intermetallic compounds, this separation has historically been achieved with the use of plugs of silica wool. Whereas this is generally efficient in a mechanical sense, it leads to a significant contamination of the decanted liquid with silica fibers. In this paper we present a simple design for frit-disc alumina crucible sets that has made their use in the growth single crystals from high temperature solutions both simple and affordable. An alumina frit-disc allows for the clean separation of the residual liquid from the solid phase. This allows for the reuse of the decanted liquid, either for further growth of the same phase, or for subsequent growth of other, related phases. In this paper we provide examples of the growth of isotopically substituted TbCd$_{6}$ and icosahedral i-$R$Cd quasicrystals, as well as the separation of (i) the closely related Bi$_{2}$Rh$_{3}$S$_{2}$ and Bi$_{2}$Rh$_{3.5}$S$_{2}$ phases and (ii) PrZn$_{11}$ and Pr$_{2}$Zn$_{17}$.

Single crystals of Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3}$S$ _{2}$ and Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3.5}$S$ _{2}$ were synthesized by solution growth and the crystal structures, thermodynamic and transport properties of both compounds were studied. In the case of Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3}$S$ _{2}$, a structural first-order transition at around 165 K is identified by single crystal diffraction experiments, with clear signatures visible in resistivity, magnetization and specific heat data. No superconducting transition for Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3}$S$ _{2}$ was observed down to 0.5 K. In contrast, no structural phase transition at high temperature was observed for Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3.5}$S$ _{2}$, however bulk superconductivity with a critical temperature, $T_{c}\approx$ 1.7 K was observed. The Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$\ and the Debye temperature($\varTheta_{\textrm{D}}$) were found to be 9.4 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and 209 K respectively for Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3}$S$ _{2}$, and 22 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ and 196 K respectively for Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3.5}$S$ _{2}$. Study of the specific heat in the superconducting state of Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3.5}$S$ _{2}$ suggests that Bi$_{2} $Rh$ _{3.5}$S$ _{2}$ is a weakly coupled, BCS superconductor.
