Multi-Q magnetic structures on triangular lattices, with their two-dimensional topological spin texture, have attracted significant interest. However, unambiguously confirming their formation by excluding the presence of three equally-populated single-Q domains remains challenging. In the metallic triangular lattice antiferromagnet Co1/3TaS2, two magnetic ground states have been suggested at different temperature ranges, with the low-temperature phase being a triple-Q structure corresponding to the highest-density Skyrmion lattice. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and advanced spin dynamics simulations, we demonstrate a clear distinction in the excitation spectra between the single-Q and triple-Q phases of Co1/3TaS2 and, more generally, a triangular lattice. First, we refined the spin Hamiltonian by fitting the excitation spectra measured in its paramagnetic phase, allowing us to develop an unbiased model independent of magnetic ordering. Second, we observed that the two magnetically ordered phases in Co1/3TaS2 exhibit markedly different behaviors in their long-wavelength Goldstone modes. Our spin model, derived from the paramagnetic phase, confirms that these behaviors originate from the single-Q and triple-Q nature of the respective ordered phases, providing unequivocal evidence of the single-Q to triple-Q phase transition in Co1/3TaS2. Importantly, we propose that the observed contrast in the long-wavelength spin dynamics between the single-Q and triple-Q orderings is universal, offering a potentially unique way to distinguish a generic triple-Q ordering on a triangular lattice from its multi-domain single-Q counterparts. We describe its applicability with examples of similar hexagonal systems forming potential triple-Q orderings. (For the full abstract, please refer to the manuscript)

The pursuit of quantum spin liquid (QSL) states in condensed matter physics has drawn attention to kagome antiferromagnets (AFM) where a two-dimensional corner-sharing network of triangles frustrates conventional magnetic orders. While quantum kagome AFMs based on Cu$^{2+}$ (3d$^9$, $s=\frac{1}{2}$) ions have been extensively studied, there is so far little work beyond copper-based systems. Here we present our bulk magnetization, specific heat and neutron scattering studies on single crystals of a new titanium fluoride Cs$_8$RbK$_3$Ti$_{12}$F$_{48}$ where Ti$^{3+}$ (3d$^1$, $s = \frac{1}{2}$) ions form a breathing quantum kagome antiferromagnet that does not order magnetically down to 1.5 K. Our comprehensive map of the dynamic response function $S(Q,\hbarω)$ acquired at 1.5 K where the heat capacity is T-linear reveals a dispersive continuum emanating from soft lines that extend along (100). The data indicate fractionalized spinon-like excitations with quasi-one-dimensional dispersion within a quasi-two-dimensional spin system.

Here, we perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal samples of MnPSe$_3$, a member of the $\rm \textit{M}P\textit{X}_{3}$ family, to study the spin dynamics and determine the effective spin model. The excited magnon bands are well characterized by a spin model, which includes a Heisenberg term with three intraplane exchange parameters ($J_{1}=-0.73$~meV, $J_{2}=-0.014$~meV, $J_{3}=-0.43$~meV) and one interplane parameter ($J_{c}=-0.054$~meV), and an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy term ($D=-0.035$~meV). Additionally, we observe the intersection of the magnon and phonon bands but no anomalous spectral features induced by the formation of magnon-phonon hybrid excitations at the intersecting region. We discuss possible reasons for the absence of such hybrid excitations in MnPSe$_3$.

Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have emerged as promising materials for light-emitting diode applications. In this study, by using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy we identified and quantitatively separated the lattice vibrational and molecular rotational dynamics of two perovskites, butylammonium lead iodide (BA)$_{2}$PbI$_{4}$ and phenethyl-ammonium lead iodide (PEA)$_{2}$PbI$_{4}$. By examining the corresponding temperature dependence, we found that the lattice vibrations, as evidenced by neutron spectra, are consistent with the lattice dynamics obtained from Raman scattering. We revealed that the rotational dynamics of organic molecules in these materials tend to suppress their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) while the vibrational dynamics did not show predominant correlations with the same. Additionally, we observed photoluminescence emission peak splitting for both systems, which becomes prominent above certain critical temperatures where the suppression of PLQY begins. This study suggests that the rotational motions of polarized molecules may lead to a reduction in exciton binding energy or the breaking of degeneracy in exciton binding energy levels, enhancing non-radiative recombination rates, and consequently reducing photoluminescence yield. These findings offer a deeper understanding of fundamental interactions in 2D HOIPs and could guide the design of more efficient light-emitting materials for advanced technological applications.

Spontaneous Hall conductivity has recently been reported in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet Co$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ under a zero magnetic field. This phenomenon originates from the distinctive noncoplanar triple-Q magnetic ground state, possessing uniform real-space Berry curvature characterized by scalar spin chirality. We investigated the physical properties of Co$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$ by judiciously controlling the composition, revealing a drastic change in its bulk properties, even by slight variations in cobalt composition, despite the same crystal structure. For $0.299 < x < 0.325$, Co$_x$TaS$_2$ keeps all the characteristics of the ground state consistent with the previous studies -- two antiferromagnetic phase transitions at $T_{N1}$ and $T_{N2} (< T_{N1})$, a large spontaneous Hall conductivity ($σ_{xy} (H=0)$), and a weak ferromagnetic moment along the c-axis. However, samples with $x > 0.330$ exhibit distinct bulk properties, including the absence of both $σ_{xy} (H=0)$ and the weak ferromagnetic moment. Our neutron diffraction data reveal that Co$_x$TaS$_2$ with $x > 0.330$ develops coplanar helical magnetic order with $q_{m1} = (1/3, 0, 0)$. This is entirely different from what has been seen in $x < 0.325$, explaining the observed composition dependence.

Magnon polarons are novel elementary excitations possessing hybrid magnonic and phononic signatures, and are responsible for many exotic spintronic and magnonic phenomena. Despite long-term sustained experimental efforts in chasing for magnon polarons, direct spectroscopic evidence of their existence is hardly observed. Here, we report the direct observation of magnon polarons using neutron spectroscopy on a multiferroic Fe$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ possessing strong magnon-phonon coupling. Specifically, below the magnetic ordering temperature, a gap opens at the nominal intersection of the original magnon and phonon bands, leading to two separated magnon-polaron bands. Each of the bands undergoes mixing, interconverting and reversing between its magnonic and phononic components. We attribute the formation of magnon polarons to the strong magnon-phonon coupling induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Intriguingly, we find that the band-inverted magnon polarons are topologically nontrivial. These results uncover exotic elementary excitations arising from the magnon-phonon coupling, and offer a new route to topological states by considering hybridizations between different types of fundamental excitations.

However, a new triple-Q chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co1/3TaS2 as the first example of tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero σ_{xy}(H=0)). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-Q state.

In comparison to the 122-type FeSCs with a centrosymmetric tetragonal lattice structure (space group $I4/mmm$) at room temperature and an in-plane stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperature, the 112 system has a noncentrosymmetric structure (space group $P2_{1}$) with additional zigzag arsenic chains between Ca/La layers and a magnetic ground state with similar wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AF}}$ but different orientations of ordered moments in the parent compounds. Our INS study clearly reveals that the in-plane dispersions and the bandwidth of spin excitations in the superconducting CaLa-112 closely resemble to those in 122 systems. While the total fluctuating moments $\langle m^2 \rangle\approx 4.6\pm0.2 μ_B^2$/Fe are larger than 122 system, the dynamic correlation lengths are similar ($ξ\approx 10$ Å). These results suggest that superconductivity in iron arsenides may have a common magnetic origin under similar magnetic exchange couplings with a dual nature from local moments and itinerant electrons, despite their different magnetic patterns and lattice symmetries.

Dimerized magnets forming alternating Heisenberg chains exhibit quantum coherence and entanglement and thus can find potential applications in quantum information and computation. However, magnetic systems typically undergo thermal decoherence at finite temperatures. Here, we show inelastic neutron scattering results on an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$ that the excited quasiparticles can counter thermal decoherence and maintain strong correlations at elevated temperatures. At low temperatures, we observe clear dispersive singlet-triplet excitations arising from the dimers formed along the crystalline $b$-axis. The excitation gap is of $\sim$18 meV and the bandwidth is about half of the gap. The band top energy has a weak modulation along the [100] direction, indicative of a small interchain coupling. The gap increases while the bandwidth decreases with increasing temperature, leading to a strong reduction in the available phase space for the triplons. As a result, the Lorentzian-type energy broadening becomes highly asymmetric as the temperature is raised. These results are associated with a strongly correlated state resulting from hard-core constraint and quasiparticle interactions. We consider these results to be not only evidence for strong correlations at finite temperatures in Na$_2$Cu$_2$TeO$_6$, but also for the universality of the strongly correlated state in a broad range of quantum magnetic systems.

In the local or itinerant extreme, magnetic excitations can be described by the Heisenberg model which treats electron spins as localized moments, or by the itinerant-electron model where the exchange interaction between electrons leads to unequal numbers of electrons with up and down spins. However, it has been elusive when both local moments and itinerant electrons are present in the intermediate range. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence on the coexistence of and interplay between local moments and itinerant electrons in a van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$, which can sustain tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism down to the monolayer limit. We find that there exist ferromagnetic spin-wave excitations dispersing from the zone center at low energies resulting from local moments, and a column-like broad continuum at the zone boundary at high energies up to over 100 meV resulting from itinerant electrons. Unlike the two-dimensional crystal structure, the low-energy mode exhibits a three-dimensional nature, and the high-energy mode also has an out-of-plane dependence. Both modes persist well above the Curie temperature of 160 K. Our neutron spectroscopic data reveal that the low-energy spin waves at 100 K are more coherent than those at 4 K, which is evidence of the weakening of the Kondo screening at high temperatures. These results unambiguously demonstrate the coexistence of local moments and itinerant electrons, and the Kondo effect between these two components in Fe$_{2.72}$GeTe$_{2}$. Such behaviors are generally expected in heavy-fermion systems with heavy $f$ electrons but rarely clearly observed in materials with light $d$ electrons. These findings shed light on the understanding of magnetism in transition-metal compounds.

We show the structures of magnetic excitations in spin-1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnets Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ investigated by inelastic neutron scattering in wide energy and momentum ranges. For Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, four single-magnon excitation modes were observed. Low-energy three modes are assigned to be transverse modes and the high-energy fourth mode is suggested to be an amplitude mode. It was found that the broad excitation continuum without a marked structure spreads in a wide energy range from $0.15J$ to approximately $2.5J$ in contrast to the clearly structured excitation continuum observed in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. These findings strongly suggest spinon excitations as elementary excitations in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. In Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, singlet-triplet excitations from the pinwheel VBS state and their ghost modes caused by the enlargement of the chemical unit cell were clearly confirmed. It was found that the excitation continuum is structured in the low-energy region approximately below $J_{\mathrm{avg}}$ and the almost structureless high-energy excitation continuum extends to approximately $2.6J_{\mathrm{avg}}$. The characteristics of the high-energy excitation continuum are common to both Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, irrespective of their ground states. The experimental results strongly suggest that the spin liquid component remains in the ground state as quantum fluctuations in Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$.

Atomic vibrations play a vital role in the functions of various physical, chemical, and biological systems. The vibrational properties and the specific heat of crystalline bulk materials are well described by Debye theory, which successfully predicts the quadratic $ω^{2}$ low-frequency scaling of the vibrational density of states (VDOS) in bulk ordered solids from few fundamental assumptions. However, the analogous framework for nanoconfined materials with fewer degrees of freedom has been far less well explored. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we characterize the VDOS of amorphous ice confined to a thickness of $\approx 1$ nm inside graphene oxide membranes and we observe a crossover from the Debye $ω^2$ scaling to an anomalous $ω^3$ behaviour upon reducing the confinement size $L$. Additionally, using molecular dynamics simulations, we confirm the experimental findings and also prove that such a scaling of the VDOS appears in both crystalline and amorphous solids under slab-confinement. We theoretically demonstrate that this low-frequency $ω^3$ law results from the geometric constraints on the momentum phase space induced by confinement along one spatial direction. Finally, we predict that the Debye scaling reappears at a characteristic frequency $ω_\times= v L/2π$, with $v$ the speed of sound of the material, and we confirm this quantitative estimate with simulations. This new physical phenomenon, revealed by combining theoretical, experimental and simulations results, is relevant to a myriad of systems both in synthetic and biological contexts and it could impact various technological applications for systems under confinement such as nano-devices or thin films.

In most of iron-based superconductors, $S({\bf Q},E)$ is enhanced at ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0), where the "magnetic resonance mode" is commonly observed in the unfolded Brillouin zone. Constant-$E$ cuts of $S({\bf Q},E)$ suggest that the enhancement is not uniform in the magnetic excitation, and limited around ${\bf Q}$ = ($π$, 0). This result is consistent with the theoretical simulation of the magnetic resonance mode due to the Bardeen$-$Cooper$-$Schrieffer coherence factor with the sign-reversing order parameter of s$_{\pm}$ wave.

The kagome lattice is a fertile platform to explore topological excitations with both Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics. While relativistic Dirac Fermions and flat-bands have been discovered in the electronic structure of kagome metals, the spin excitations have received less attention. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering studies of the prototypical kagome magnetic metal FeSn. The spectra display well-defined spin waves extending up to 120 meV. Above this energy, the spin waves become progressively broadened, reflecting interactions with the Stoner continuum. Using linear spin wave theory, we determine an effective spin Hamiltonian that reproduces the measured dispersion. This analysis indicates that the Dirac magnon at the K-point remarkably occurs on the brink of a region where well-defined spin waves become unobservable. Our results emphasize the influential role of itinerant carriers on the topological spin excitations of metallic kagome magnets.

Rev. B {\bf 91}, 224404 (2015), {\it ibid}. {\bf 93}, 094416 (2016)]. We confirmed the presence of a peak-structure in the $ω$-dependence of the local spin susceptibility $χ''(ω)$ of superconducting (SC) LSCO with a peak energy of 16--19 meV, where the spin excitations intersect optical phonon branches. A comparable peak-structure is not observed in the insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, LSNO, and heavily overdoped LSCO with $x$ = 0.30. A dome-shaped $x$-dependence of the integrated intensity around the peak energies is revealed for SC phase by summarizing the present and previously reported results. Furthermore, our phonon calculation on LCO shows the existence of two optical branches at $\sim$19 meV that could stabilize stripe-alignment of carriers due to out-of-plane vibrations of Cu or O of the CuO$_2$ planes. These results indicate the interplay among spin, charge, and lattice dynamics and suggest that the intensity enhancement is associated with their composite excitations.

The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. Here, time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments and first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead iodide ($\rm{MAPbI_3}$), a prototypical example of MHPs. Our findings are that optical phonons lose temporal coherence gradually with increasing temperature which vanishes at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition. Surprisingly, however, we found that the spatial coherence is still retained throughout the decoherence process. We argue that the temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations contribute to the formation of large polarons in this metal halide perovskite.

We perform thermodynamic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements to study the lattice dynamics (phonons) of a cubic collinear antiferromagnet Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ which hosts topological spin excitations (magnons). While the specific heat and thermal conductivity results show that the thermal transport is dominated by phonons, the deviation of the thermal conductivity from a pure phononic model indicates that there is a strong coupling between magnons and phonons. In the INS measurements, we find a mode in the excitation spectra at 4.5 K, which exhibits a slight downward dispersion around the Brillouin zone center. This mode disappears above the Néel temperature, and thus cannot be a phonon. Furthermore, the dispersion is distinct from that of a magnon. Instead, it can be explained by the magnon-polaron mode, which is new collective excitations resulting from the hybridization between magnons and phonons. We consider the suppression of the thermal conductivity and emergence of the magnon-polaron mode to be evidence for magnon-phonon coupling in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$.

To elucidate the spin dynamics of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which couples with the charge degree of freedom, the spin excitations spanning the characteristic energy ($E_{\rm cross}$ $\sim$35-40 meV) are investigated for underdoped $x$ = 0.10 and optimally doped (OP) $x$ = 0.16 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements. Analysis based on a two-component picture of high-quality data clarified the possible coexistence of uprightly standing incommensurate (IC) excitations with gapless commensurate (C) excitations in the energy-momentum space. The IC component weakens the intensity toward $E_{\rm cross}$ with increasing energy transfer ($\hbarω$), whereas the C component strengthens at high-$\hbarω$ regions. The analysis results imply that the superposition of two components with a particular intensity balance forms an hourglass-shaped excitation in appearance. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the intensity of each component exhibits different behaviors; the IC component disappears near the pseudo-gap temperature ($T$*) upon warming, whereas the C component is robust against temperature. These results suggest the itinerant electron spin nature and the localized magnetism of the parent La$_2$CuO$_4$ in IC and C excitations, respectively, similar to the spin excitations in the OP YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ with higher superconducting-transition temperatures.

We investigated the low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by the high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. We observed a spin resonance with energy of $\hbarω_\text{res}=0.56$~meV centered at a characteristic wavevector $\mathbf{Q}_\text{res}=(0.3, 0.3, 0.5)$. The resonance energy corresponds well to the superconducting gap $2Δ=0.56$~meV estimated by the tunneling spectroscopy. The spin resonance shows the $L$ modulation with a maximum at around $L = 0.5$. The $L$ modulated intensity of the spin resonance and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the quasi-one-dimensional $α$ and $β$ sheets at the Fermi surfaces have the horizontal line nodes. These results may set a strong constraint on the pairing symmetry of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We also discuss the implications on possible superconducting order parameters.

In the undoped state, LiFeAs exhibits superconductivity at $T_c=18$ K and transverse incommensurate spin excitations similar to electron overdoped iron pnictides. Upon vanadium-doping to form LiFe$_{0.955}$V$_{0.045}$, the transverse incommensurate spin excitations in LiFeAs transform into longitudinally elongated in a similar fashion as that of potassium (hole) doped Ba$_{0.7}$K$_{0.3}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, but with dramatically enhanced magnetic scattering and elimination of superconductivity. This is different from the suppression of the overall magnetic excitations in hole doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and the enhancement of superconductivity near optimal hole doping. These results are consistent with density function theory plus dynamic mean field theory calculations, suggesting that vanadium-doping in LiFeAs may induce an enlarged effective magnetic moment $S_{eff}$ with a spin crossover ground state arising from the inter-orbital scattering of itinerant electrons.

Spin fluctuations are widely believed to play an important role in the superconducting mechanisms of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Spin fluctuations have been observed in iron-based superconductors as well. However, in some iron-based superconductors such as LaFePO$_{0.9}$, they have not been observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). LaFePO$_{0.9}$ is an iron-based superconductor with a low superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$= 5 K), where line nodes are observed in the superconducting gap function. The line-node symmetry typically originates from sign reversal of the order parameter in spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity. This contradiction has been a long-standing mystery of this superconductor. Herein, spin fluctuations were found at high energies such as 30$-$50 meV with comparable intensities to an optimally doped LaFeAs(O,F). Based on this finding, the line-node symmetry can be explained naturally as spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity.

Molecular based spin-1/2 triangular lattice systems such as LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ have attracted research interest. Distortions, defects, and intersite disorder are suppressed in such molecular-based magnets, and intrinsic geometrical frustration gives rise to unconventional and unexpected ground states. Li$_2$$A$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($A$ = In or Sc) is such a compound where spin-1/2 Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ clusters in place of Mo ions form the uniform triangular lattice. Their ground states are different according to the $A$ site. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes conventional $120^\circ$ long-range magnetic order below $T_\text{N}=12$~K whereas isomorphic Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits no long-range magnetic order down to 0.5~K. Here, we report exotic magnetisms in Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ investigated by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopies using polycrystalline samples. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ and Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ show completely different behaviors observed in both $μ$SR and INS measurements, representing their different ground states. Li$_2$InMo$_3$O$_8$ exhibits spin wave excitation which is quantitatively described by the nearest neighbor anisotropic Heisenberg model based on the $120^\circ$ spin structure. In contrast, Li$_2$ScMo$_3$O$_8$ undergoes short-range magnetic order below 4~K with quantum-spin-liquid-like magnetic fluctuations down to the base temperature. Origin of the different ground states is discussed in terms of anisotropies of crystal structures and magnetic interactions.

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to investigate the effect of electron correlations on spin dynamics in the iron-based superconductor Ba$_{0.75}$K$_{0.25}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Our INS data show a spin-wave-like dispersive feature, with a zone boundary energy of 200 meV. A first principles analysis of dynamical spin susceptibility, incorporating the mass renormalization factor of 3, as determined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, provides a reasonable description of the observed spin excitations. This analysis shows that electron correlations in the Fe-3$d$ bands yield enhanced effective electron masses, and consequently, induce substantial narrowing of the spin excitation bandwidth. Our results highlight the importance of electron correlations in an itinerant description of the spin excitations in iron-based superconductors.

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin resonance in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional electron structure, three strongly $L$-dependent modes of spin resonance are found below $T_c=35$ K. The mode energies are below and linearly scale with the total superconducting gaps summed on the nesting hole and electron pockets, essentially in agreement with the results in cuprate and heavy fermion superconductors. This observation supports the sign-reversed Cooper pairing mechanism under multiple pairing channels and resolves the long-standing puzzles concerning the broadening and dispersive spin resonance peak in iron pnictides. More importantly, the triple resonant modes can be classified into odd and even symmetries with respect to the distance of Fe-Fe planes within the Fe-As bilayer unit. Thus, our results closely resemble those in the bilayer cuprates with nondegenerate spin excitations, suggesting that these two high-$T_c$ superconducting families share a common nature.

The magnetic structure and spin-wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$ were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the $ab$ plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c$ axis where the magnetic propagation vector is $\mathbf{k}=\left(0,0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$. The ordered magnetic moments are estimated to be $0.54(2)μ_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{5+}$ ($4d^1$) ions and $1.07(3)μ_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{4+}$ ($4d^2$) ions at 4 K, which are about half of the expected values. The inelastic neutron scattering results display strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy along the $c$ axis due to the spin-orbit interaction in Mo ions evidenced by the spin gap at the magnetic zone center. The model Hamiltonian consisting of in-plane anisotropic exchange interactions, the interlayer exchange interaction, and easy-axis single-ion anisotropy can explain our inelastic neutron scattering data well. Strong Ising-like anisotropy and weak interlayer coupling compared with the intralayer exchange interaction can explain both the high-temperature magnetoresistance and long-time magnetization decay recently observed in La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$.

Understanding the overall features of magnetic excitation is essential for clarifying the mechanism of Cooper pair formation in iron-based superconductors. In particular, clarifying the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity is a central challenge because magnetism may play a key role in their exotic superconductivity. BaFe2As2 is one of ideal systems for such investigation because its superconductivity can be induced in several ways, allowing a comparative examination. Here we report a study on the spin fluctuations of the hole-overdoped iron-based superconductors Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.5 and 1.0; Tc = 36 K and 3.4 K, respectively) over the entire Brillouin zone using inelastic neutron scattering. We find that their spin spectra consist of spin wave and chimney-like dispersions. The chimney-like dispersion can be attributed to the itinerant character of magnetism. The band width of the spin wave-like dispersion is almost constant from the non-doped to optimum-doped region, which is followed by a large reduction in the overdoped region. This suggests that the superconductivity is suppressed by the reduction of magnetic exchange couplings, indicating a strong relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

Mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in FeSe has been intensely scrutinized recently because of a variety of exotic properties unprecedented for other iron-based superconductors. A central unanswered question concerns the origin of the interaction that causes the nematic transition at $T_s=90\,K$ without accompanying magnetic order. Elucidating the nature of spin excitations in the normal state is a key to addressing this issue. Here we report, from inelastic neutron-scattering measurements in FeSe single crystals, that high-energy spin excitation spectra of FeSe exhibit characteristic energy dependence with missing intensity at around 70-80$\,$meV, which are very different from other iron-based superconductors. Despite of the strongest electron correlations among the iron-based superconductor family, the spectra are qualitatively at variance with the local moment model and can be essentially described by the itinerant electron picture. Moreover, the dynamical spin susceptibility above $T_s$ is only weakly temperature dependent, which is in stark contrast to the Curie-Weiss behavior of the electronic nematic susceptibility, suggesting that the nematic transition is not likely driven by spin but by orbital degrees of freedom.

Inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on selected phonons and magnetic excitations of a crystal of superconducting (SC) Ca$_{10}$Pt$_4$As$_8$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$ with the onset transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 33 K to investigate the role that orbital fluctuations play in the Cooper pairing. The spectral weight of the magnetic excitations, $χ''({\bm Q}, ω)$ at ${\bm Q} = {\bm Q}_{\rm M}$ (magnetic $Γ$ points) is suppressed (enhanced) in the relatively low (high) $ω$ region. The maximum of the enhancement is located at $ω= ω_{\rm p} \sim$ 18 meV at temperature $T = 3$ K corresponding to the $ω_{\rm p}/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 6.3. This large value is rather favorable to the orbital-fluctuation mechanism of the superconductivity with the so-called $S_{++}$ symmetry. In the phonon measurements, we observed slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $C_{66}$. This softening starts at $T$ well above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, as $T$ decreases. An anomalously large increase in the phonon spectral weight of in-plane optical modes was observed in the range of $35 < ω< 40$ meV with decreasing $T$ from far above $T_{\rm c}$. Because this $ω$ region mainly corresponds to the in-plane vibrations of Fe atoms, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of the Fe 3$d$ electrons and lattice system, useful for studying possible roles of the orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and appearance of the so-called nematic phase.

Magnetic excitations in the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHA) CuCrO2 were studied using single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering. A diffusive quasielastic component that persisted without developing a correlation length over a wide temperature range both below and above the ordering temperature was observed. Furthermore, characteristic momentum dependence was observed that was reproduced using minimum spin clusters. The robust spin clusters contrast with conventional magnetic ordering and may be universal in TLHAs.

The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier doping is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-dopings is still fragmentary. Here we combine x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and deeply mix with charge excitations, indicating that electrons acquire a highly itinerant character in the doped metallic state. Moreover, above the magnetic excitations, an additional dispersing feature is observed near the Γ-point, and we ascribe it to particle-hole charge excitations. These properties are in stark contrast with the more localized spin-excitations (paramagnons) recently observed in hole-doped compounds even at high doping-levels.

By means of neutron inelastic scattering, magnetic excitations and phonons were measured for a single crystal of slightly overdoped superconductor Ca10Pt4As8(Fe1-xPtxAs)10 (x ~ 0.2) with the transition temperature Tc of ~33 K. Below Tc, magnetic excitation spectra \{chi}"(Q, ω) measured at Q = QM [magnetic Γ points] are gapped, and in the relatively higher ω region, the \{chi}"(QM, ω)-increase was observed with decreasing T, where the maximum of the increase was found at ~18 meV at 3 K (<< Tc). These characteristics are favorable to orbital-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity with the so-called S++symmetry of the order parameter. The energy dependence of δQ-temperature(T) curve of the magnetic excitations seems to have anomalous behavior in rather wide T region above Tc, δQ being the width of the Q scan profile. In the phonon measurements, we observed softening of the in-plane TA mode, which corresponds to the elastic constant C66. This softening seems to start at rather high temperature T, as T is lowered. Additionally, anomalous increase in spectral weights of the TO-phonons at around QM in the region 35 < ω < 40 meV was found even above Tc, as T is lowered from ambient T . Because the spectral weights in this ω region mainly correspond to the in-plane motions of Fe atoms and because orbital fluctuations are expected to be strong at around QM, the result may present clues to investigate a possible coupling between the fluctuations of the orbitals and lattice system.

We investigate the doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in two-superconducting-dome-system LaFeAsO1-xDx. Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic doping dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron doping. The present results imply that the multi-orbital nature plays an important role in the doping and / or material dependence of the Tc of the iron pnictide superconductors.

The magnetic excitations in CuCr$_{0.97}$Mg$_{0.03}$O$_{2}$ consist of a dispersive component and a flat component. Though this feature is apparently similar to CuCrO$_{2}$, the energy structure of the excitation spectrum shows some difference from that in CuCrO$_{2}$. On the other hand, in Cu$_{0.85}$Ag$_{0.15}$CrO$_{2}$ and CuCr$_{0.85}$Al$_{0.15}$O$_{2}$ the flat components are much reduced, the low-energy parts of the excitation spectra become intense, and additional low-energy diffusive spin fluctuations are induced. We argued the origins of these changes in the magnetic excitations are ascribed to effects of the doped holes or change of the dimensionality in the magnetic correlations.

By performing time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on a large amount of single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we studied detailed structure of the imaginary part of the dynamic spin susceptibility over a wide range of phase space. In the normal state at T=5 K, strong incommensurate (IC) peaks were clearly observed at around $\mathbf{Q}_\text{c}=(0.3,0.3)$ up to at least $\hbarω=80$ meV. In addition, our data also show strong magnetic fluctuations that exist on the ridges connecting the IC peaks around the $(π,π)$ point rather than around the $Γ$ point. Our results are consistent with the semi-mean-field random phase approximation calculation for a two dimensional Fermi liquid with a characteristic energy of 5.0 meV. Furthermore, the IC fluctuations were observed even at room temperature.

We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2Å^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation.

The Fe-based Oxypnicide superconductors have generated a huge amount of interest; they are a high temperature superconductor, with a Tc of 55K, but do not have the two dimensional copper oxygen layer that was thought essential for superconductivity at these high temperatures. Initial studies have hinted towards the possibility of a spin density wave (SDW) in these compounds and how they could play an important role in the superconductivity. SDW's occur at low temperatures in low-dimensional materials with strong electron correlations or in metals with a high density of states at the Fermi surface. A transition to the SDW state has many similarities to the superconducting transition, driven by the condensation energy with an energy gap opening, and in many materials the SDW state occurs adjacent in the phase diagram to the superconducting state. In these materials it is believed that electron doping suppresses the SDW instability allowing superconductivity to emerge. In this paper we report on the first direct experimental evidence of a SDW in the LaFeAsO parent compound as observed with inelastic neutron scattering. We show that these excitation derive from a two-dimensional Fermi surface nesting with a nesting vector of (π,π,0).

All the components appear below T_N^Mn = 46 K, and the G, C,and F-type components are enhanced below T_lock = 28 K, where q_Mn ordering locks at its low temperature value. The locking of the propagation vector also yields the squaring up of the spin arrangement. The magnetic moments of Tb ions show a quasi long-range ordering below T_N^Tb = 7 K. It drastically promotes the development of the G, C, and F-type components while suppressing the A-type components.

A ferromagnetic insulating (FM-I) state in Pr0.75Ca0.25MnO3 has been studied by neutron scattering experiment and theoretical calculation. The insulating behavior is robust against an external magnetic field, and is ascribed to neither the phase separation between a ferromagnetic metallic (FM-M) phase and a non-ferromagnetic insulating one, nor the charge ordering. We found that the Jahn-Teller type lattice distortion is much weaker than PrMnO3 and the magnetic interaction is almost isotropic. These features resembles the ferromagnetic metallic state of manganites, but the spin exchange interaction J is much reduced compared to the FM-M state. The theoretical calculation based on the staggered type orbital order well reproduces several features of the spin and orbital state in the FM-I phase.

When the stripe order is formed at high temperature, incommensurability εof the stripe order has a tendency to show the value close to 1/3 for the samples with x at both sides of 1/3. With decreasing temperature, however, εbecomes close to the value determined by the linear relation of ε= n_h, where n_h is a hole concentration. This variation of the εstrongly affects the character of the stripe order through the change of the carrier densities in stripes and antiferromagnetic domains.

Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 single crystal has been studied in detail as a function of temperature by neutron diffraction. It is demonstrated that a commensurate-incommensurate (C-IC) transition of the orbital ordering takes place in a bulk sample, being consistent with the electron diffraction studies. The lattice structure and the transport properties go through drastic changes in the IC orbital ordering phase below the charge/orbital ordering temperature
Tco/oo, indicating that the anomalies are intimately related to the partial disordering of the orbital order, unlike the consensus that it is related to the charge disordering process. For the same T range, partial disorder of the orbital ordering turns on the ferromagnetic spin fluctuations which were observed in a previous neutron scattering study.
