Mixed-platonic 3-manifolds
Abstract: We introduce a class of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that we call mixed-platonic, composed of regular ideal hyperbolic polyhedra of more than one type, which includes certain previously-known examples. We establish basic facts about mixed-platonic manifolds which allow us to conclude, among other things, that there is no mixed-platonic hyperbolic knot complement with hidden symmetries.

Small $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F})$ representations of Seifert fiber space groups
Abstract: Let $M$ be a Seifert fiber space with non-abelian fundamental group and admitting a triangulation with $t$ tetrahedra. We show that there is a non-abelian $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F})$ quotient where $|\mathbb F| < c(2^{20t}3^{120t})$ for an absolute constant $c>0$ and use this to show that the lens space recognition problem lies in coNP for Seifert fiber space input. We end with a discussion of our… ▽ More

Infinitely many virtual geometric triangulations
Abstract: We prove that every cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold has a finite cover admitting infinitely many geometric ideal triangulations. Furthermore, every long Dehn filling of one cusp in this cover admits infinitely many geometric ideal triangulations. This cover is constructed in several stages, using results about separability of peripheral subgroups and their double cosets, in addition to a new conjugac… ▽ More

Exceptional surgeries in 3-manifolds
Abstract: Myers shows that every compact, connected, orientable $3$--manifold with no $2$--sphere boundary components contains a hyperbolic knot. We use work of Ikeda with an observation of Adams-Reid to show that every $3$--manifold subject to the above conditions contains a hyperbolic knot which admits a non-trivial non-hyperbolic surgery, a toroidal surgery in particular. We conclude with a question and… ▽ More

Dehn surgery and hyperbolic knot complements without hidden symmetries
Abstract: Neumann and Reid conjecture that there are exactly three knot complements which admit hidden symmetries. This paper establishes several results that provide evidence for the conjecture. Our main technical tools provide obstructions to having infinitely many fillings of a cusped manifold produce knot complements admitting hidden symmetries. Applying these tools, we show for any two-bridge link comp… ▽ More

Cusp types of quotients of hyperbolic knot complements
Abstract: This paper completes a classification of the types of orientable and non-orientable cusps that can arise in the quotients of hyperbolic knot complements. In particular, $S^2(2,4,4)$ cannot be the cusp cross-section of any orbifold quotient of a hyperbolic knot complement. Furthermore, if a knot complement covers an orbifold with a $S^2(2,3,6)$ cusp, it also covers an orbifold with a $S^2(3,3,3)$ c… ▽ More

Symmetries and hidden symmetries of $(ε, d_L)$-twisted knot complements
Abstract: In this paper we analyze symmetries, hidden symmetries, and commensurability classes of $(ε, d_L)$-twisted knot complements, which are the complements of knots that have a sufficiently large number of twists in each of their twist regions. These knot complements can be constructed via long Dehn fillings on fully augmented links complements. We show that such knot complements have no hidden symmetr… ▽ More

On the complexity of cusped non-hyperbolicity
Abstract: We show that the problem of showing that a cusped 3-manifold M is not hyperbolic is in NP, assuming $S^3$-RECOGNITION is in coNP. To this end, we show that IRREDUCIBLE TOROIDAL RECOGNITION lies in NP. Along the way we unconditionally recover SATELLITE KNOT RECOGNITION lying in NP. This was previously known only assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Our key contribution is to certify closed… ▽ More

Jointly primitive knots and surgeries between lens spaces
Abstract: This paper describes a Dehn surgery approach to generating asymmetric hyperbolic manifolds with two distinct lens space fillings. Such manifolds were first identified in work of Dunfield-Hoffman-Licata as the result of a computer search of the SnapPy census, but the current work establishes a topological framework for constructing vastly many more such examples. We introduce the notion of a ``jo… ▽ More

The Poincare homology sphere, lens space surgeries, and some knots with tunnel number two
Abstract: We exhibit an infinite family of knots in the Poincare homology sphere with tunnel number 2 that have a lens space surgery. Notably, these knots are not doubly primitive and provide counterexamples to a few conjectures. In the appendix, it is shown that hyperbolic knots in the Poincare homology sphere with a lens space surgery has either no symmetries or just a single strong involution.

Geometry of planar surfaces and exceptional fillings
Abstract: If a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits an exceptional Dehn filling, then the length of the slope of that Dehn filling is known to be at most six. However, the bound of six appears to be sharp only in the toroidal case. In this paper, we investigate slope lengths of other exceptional fillings. We construct hyperbolic 3-manifolds that have the longest known slopes for reducible fillings. As an intermedia… ▽ More

Asymmetric hyperbolic L-spaces, Heegaard genus, and Dehn filling
Abstract: An L-space is a rational homology 3-sphere with minimal Heegaard Floer homology. We give the first examples of hyperbolic L-spaces with no symmetries. In particular, unlike all previously known L-spaces, these manifolds are not double branched covers of links in S^3. We prove the existence of infinitely many such examples (in several distinct families) using a mix of hyperbolic geometry, Floer the… ▽ More

The big Dehn surgery graph and the link of S^3
Abstract: In a talk at the Cornell Topology Festival in 2005, W. Thurston discussed a graph which we call "The Big Dehn Surgery Graph", B. Here we explore this graph, particularly the link of S^3, and prove facts about the geometry and topology of B. We also investigate some interesting subgraphs and pose what we believe are important questions about B.
