We initiate a systematic study of type II orientifold flux vacua in three dimensions including gauge and metric fluxes, O-planes and D-branes. We derive simple flux models (we dub them RSTU-models) that admit a description in terms of gauged supergravities with half-maximal $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supersymmetry in three dimensions. As a landscape appetizer, we present various multi-parametric families of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric AdS$_{3}$ and Mkw$_{3}$ vacua. Remarkably, negative masses turn out to be always absent in the spectrum of scalar fluctuations, thus making all the vacua perturbatively stable within half-maximal supergravity. We provide examples of non-supersymmetric type IIB AdS$_{3}$ flux vacua which feature parametrically-controlled scale separation and come along with integer-valued conformal dimensions of the would-be dual CFT$_{2}$ operators. We also comment on the implications of our results in light of the Swampland Program.

The relation between crystal symmetries, electron correlations, and electronic structure steers the formation of a large array of unconventional phases of matter, including magneto-electric loop currents and chiral magnetism. Detection of such hidden orders is a major goal in condensed matter physics. However, to date, nonstandard forms of magnetism with chiral electronic ordering have been experimentally elusive. Here, we develop a theory for symmetry-broken chiral ground states and propose a methodology based on circularly polarized spin-selective angular-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to probe them. We exploit the archetypal quantum material Sr2RuO4 and reveal spectroscopic signatures which, even though subtle, may be reconciled with the formation of spin-orbital chiral currents at the material surface. As we shed light on these chiral regimes, our findings pave the way for a deeper understanding of ordering phenomena and unconventional magnetism.

More concretely, the solutions are found within the so-called STU-model that describes the $\textrm{U}(1)^4$ invariant sector of the theory. The on-shell action and gravitational free energy are computed for the regular solutions, the latter being zero for the wormholes irrespective of supersymmetry. There are special loci in parameter space yielding solutions with enhanced (super)symmetry. Examples include a supersymmetric EAdS$_{4}$ flow with $\textrm{SO}(4) \times \textrm{SO}(4)$ symmetry dual to a specific real mass deformation of ABJM on S$^{3}$ as well as a non-supersymmetric wormhole with $\textrm{SU}(3) \times \textrm{U}(1)^2$ symmetry. Uplift formulae for these and other examples to Euclidean solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity are presented and their complex nature discussed.

We use holography and four-dimensional $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ gauged supergravity to collect evidence for a large class of interconnected three-dimensional $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ conformal field theories. On the gravity side, we construct a one-parameter family of $\,{\textrm{ISO}(3) \times \textrm{ISO}(3)}$ gaugings of half-maximal supergravity containing a rich structure of $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ AdS$_{4}$ solutions at fixed radius. By looking at excitations around these AdS$_{4}$ solutions, the spectrum of low lying operators in the dual $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ CFT$_{3}$'s is computed and further arranged into $\,\mathfrak{osp}(2|4)$ supermultiplets. Upon suitable removal of gauge redundancies, we identify the Zamolodchikov metric on the conformal manifold dual to the AdS$_{4}$ moduli space, and recover previous results in the S-fold literature. Two special points of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supersymmetry enhancement occur. While one describes an S-fold CFT$_{3}$ dual to a non-geometric type IIB twisted compactification, the string-theoretic realisation of the other, if any, is still lacking.

The compactification includes an S-duality hyperbolic twist along the $S^1$ which, when combined with an appropriate choice of boundary conditions for the running scalars, generates special flows that develop an S-fold regime at their core, thus enhancing the space-time symmetry there to $SO(2,3)$. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, the flows constructed here are conjectured to describe conformal interfaces in a circle compactification of $\mathcal{N}=4$ $\textrm{SYM}_{4}$.

We present four such solutions with $\,\mathcal{M}=\textrm{S}^{5}\,$ that preserve $\,\mathcal{N}=4,2,1,0\,$ supersymmetries. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions are conjectured to describe new strongly coupled three-dimensional CFT's on a localised interface of SYM. We discuss the existence of flat deformations in the gravity side dual to marginal deformations of the conjectured S-fold CFT's. From a geometrical perspective, the flat deformations induce a monodromy $\,h\,$ on $\,\mathcal{M}\,$ and replace $\,\textrm{S}^1 \,\times\, \mathcal{M}\,$ by the so-called mapping torus $\,T(\mathcal{M})_h$. Interestingly, the flat deformations provide a controlled mechanism of supersymmetry breaking for $\,\mathcal{N} \ge 2\,$ S-folds. We present a class of such non-supersymmetric S-folds obtained by flat-deforming the $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ S-fold and discuss their (non-)perturbative stability.

In this note we present a group-theoretical characterisation of such flat deformations and provide a 5D interpretation thereof in terms of $\mathfrak{so}(6)$-valued duality twists inducing a class of Cremmer--Scherk--Schwarz flat gaugings in a reduction from 5D to 4D. In this manner we establish the existence of two flat deformations for the $\mathcal{N}=4$ and $\textrm{SO}(4)$ symmetric S-fold causing a symmetry breaking down to its $\textrm{U}(1)^2$ Cartan subgroup. The result is a new two-parameter family of non-supersymmetric S-folds which are perturbatively stable at the lower-dimensional supergravity level, thus providing the first examples of such type IIB backgrounds.

Electron-doped and hole-doped superconducting cuprates exhibit a symmetric phase diagram as a function of doping. This symmetry is however only approximate. Indeed, electron-doped cuprates become superconductors only after a specific annealing process: This annealing affects the oxygen content by only a tiny amount, but has a dramatic impact on the electronic properties of the sample. Here we report the occurrence of superconductivity in oxygen-deficient Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films grown in an oxygen-free environment, after annealing in pure argon flow. As verified by x-ray diffraction, annealing induces an increase of the interlayer distance between CuO$_2$ planes in the crystal structure. Since this distance is correlated to the concentration of oxygens in apical positions, and since oxygen content cannot substantially increase during annealing, our experiments indicate that the superconducting phase transition has to be ascribed to a migration of oxygen ions to apical positions during annealing. Moreover, as we confirm via first-principles density functional theory calculations, the changes in the structural and transport properties of the films can be theoretically described by a specific redistribution of the existing oxygen ions at apical positions with respect to CuO$_2$ planes, which remodulates the electronic band structure and suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, allowing the emergence of hole superconductivity.

Oxide heterostructures represent a unique playground for triggering the emergence of novel electronic states and for implementing new device concepts. The discovery of 2D conductivity at the $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ interface has been linking for over a decade two of the major current research fields in Materials Science: correlated transition-metal-oxide systems and low-dimensional systems. A full merging of these two fields requires nevertheless the realization of $LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3$ heterostructures in the form of freestanding membranes. Here we show a completely new method for obtaining oxide hetero-membranes with micrometer lateral dimensions. Unlike traditional thin-film-based techniques developed for semiconductors and recently extended to oxides, the concept we demonstrate does not rely on any sacrificial layer and is based instead on pure strain engineering. We monitor through both real-time and post-deposition analyses, performed at different stages of growth, the strain relaxation mechanism leading to the spontaneous formation of curved hetero-membranes. Detailed transmission electron microscopy investigations show that the membranes are fully epitaxial and that their curvature results in a huge strain gradient, each of the layers showing a mixed compressive/tensile strain state. Electronic devices are fabricated by realizing ad hoc circuits for individual micro-membranes transferred on silicon chips. Our samples exhibit metallic conductivity and electrostatic field effect similar to 2D-electron systems in bulk heterostructures. Our results open a new path for adding oxide functionality into semiconductor electronics, potentially allowing for ultra-low voltage gating of a superconducting transistors, micromechanical control of the 2D electron gas mediated by ferroelectricity and flexoelectricity, and on-chip straintronics.

The COVID-19 epidemic that emerged in Wuhan China at the end of 2019 hit Italy particularly hard, yielding the implementation of strict national lockdown rules (Phase 1). There is now a hot ongoing debate in Italy and abroad on what the best strategy is to restart a country to exit a national lockdown (Phase 2). Previous studies have focused on modelling possible restarting scenarios at the national level, overlooking the fact that Italy, as other nations around the world, is divided in administrative regions who can independently oversee their own share of the Italian National Health Service. In this study, we show that regionalism, and heterogeneity between regions, is essential to understand the spread of the epidemic and, more importantly, to design effective post Lock-Down strategies to control the disease. To achieve this, we model Italy as a network of regions and parameterize the model of each region on real data spanning almost two months from the initial outbreak. Using the model, we confirm the effectiveness at the regional level of the national lockdown strategy implemented so far by the Italian government to mitigate the spread of the disease and show its efficacy at the regional level. We also propose that differentiated, albeit coordinated, regional interventions can be effective in Phase 2 to restart the country and avoid future recurrence of the epidemic, while avoiding saturation of the regional health systems and mitigating impact on costs. Our study and methodology can be easily extended to other levels of granularity (provinces or counties in the same region or states in other federal countries, etc.) to support policy- and decision-makers.

The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\text{SU}(3)$ symmetry or $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\text{G}_{2}$ symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ CFT into the $\mathcal{N}=3$ CFT at low energies is described in detail.

Half-maximal, $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$, sectors of $\,D=4\,$ $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging are investigated. We focus on a half-maximal sector including three vector multiplets, that arises as a certain $\,\textrm{SO}(3)_{\textrm{R}}$-invariant sector of the full theory. We discuss the embedding of this sector into the largest half-maximal sector of the $\,\mathcal{N}=8\,$ supergravity retaining six vector multiplets. We also provide its canonical $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ formulation and show that, from this perspective, our model leads in its own right to a new explicit gauging of $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ supergravity. Finally, expressions for the restricted duality hierarchy are given and the vacuum structure is investigated. Five new non-supersymmetric AdS vacua are found numerically. The previously known $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ AdS vacua are also contained in our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model. Unlike when embedded in previously considered sectors with fewer fields, these vacua exhibit their full $\,\mathcal{N}=2\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=3\,$ supersymmetry within our $\,\mathcal{N}=4\,$ model.

The S-fold description of Janus-type solutions of type IIB supergravity is investigated. This is done by first studying a $\,\textrm{U}(1) \times \textrm{U}(1)\,$ invariant sector of the four-dimensional dyonically-gauged $\,{[\,\textrm{SO}(1,1) \times \textrm{SO}(6)\,] \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{12}}\,$ maximal supergravity that arises upon reduction of type IIB supergravity on $\,\mathbb{R} \, \times \, \textrm{S}^{5}\,$. Two AdS$_{4}$ solutions preserving $\,\textrm{SU}(3)\,$ and $\,\textrm{SO}(6)\,$ gauge symmetry together with $\,\mathcal{N}=1\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=0\,$ supersymmetry are found within this sector. Fetching techniques from the E$_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory, these solutions are uplifted to ten-dimensional S-folds of type IIB Janus-type solutions of the form $\,\textrm{AdS}_{4} \times \mathbb{R} \times \textrm{M}_{5}\,$. The solutions presented here are natural candidates for the holographic duals of three-dimensional $\,\mathcal{N}=1\,$ and $\,\mathcal{N}=0\,$ interface super-Yang--Mills theories with $\,\textrm{SU}(3)\,$ and $\,\textrm{SU}(4)\,$ internal symmetry.

It has been shown [2] that this can be accomplished through an open-loop external control strategy where the two inputs are selected as mutually exclusive periodic pulse waves of appropriate amplitude and duty-cycle. In this paper, we use a recently derived average model of the genetic toggle switch subject to these inputs to synthesize new feedback control approaches that adjust the inputs duty-cycle in real-time via two different possible strategies, a model based hybrid PI-PWM approach and a so-called Zero-Average dynamics (ZAD) controller. The controllers are validated in-silico via both deterministic and stochastic simulations (SSA) illustrating the advantages and limitations of each strategy

Specifically, we investigate the dynamics of this system when subject to pulse-width modulated (PWM) input. We provide an analytical model that captures qualitatively the experimental observations reported in the literature and approximates its asymptotic behavior. We also discuss the effect that the system parameters have on the prediction accuracy of the model. Moreover, we propose a possible external control strategy to regulate the mean value of the fluorescence of the reporter proteins when the cells are subject to such periodic forcing.

This report summarizes the discussions and findings of the Workshop on Intelligent Autonomous Agents for Cyber Defence and Resilience organized by the NATO research group IST-152-RTG. The workshop was held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 18-20 October 2017. There is a growing recognition that future cyber defense should involve extensive use of partially autonomous agents that actively patrol the friendly network, and detect and react to hostile activities rapidly (far faster than human reaction time), before the hostile malware is able to inflict major damage, evade friendly agents, or destroy friendly agents. This requires cyber-defense agents with a significant degree of intelligence, autonomy, self-learning, and adaptability. The report focuses on the following questions: In what computing and tactical environments would such an agent operate? What data would be available for the agent to observe or ingest? What actions would the agent be able to take? How would such an agent plan a complex course of actions? Would the agent learn from its experiences, and how? How would the agent collaborate with humans? How can we ensure that the agent will not take undesirable destructive actions? Is it possible to help envision such an agent with a simple example?

This report - a major revision of its previous release - describes a reference architecture for intelligent software agents performing active, largely autonomous cyber-defense actions on military networks of computing and communicating devices. The report is produced by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Research Task Group (RTG) IST-152 "Intelligent Autonomous Agents for Cyber Defense and Resilience". In a conflict with a technically sophisticated adversary, NATO military tactical networks will operate in a heavily contested battlefield. Enemy software cyber agents - malware - will infiltrate friendly networks and attack friendly command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance and computerized weapon systems. To fight them, NATO needs artificial cyber hunters - intelligent, autonomous, mobile agents specialized in active cyber defense. With this in mind, in 2016, NATO initiated RTG IST-152. Its objective has been to help accelerate the development and transition to practice of such software agents by producing a reference architecture and technical roadmap. This report presents the concept and architecture of an Autonomous Intelligent Cyber-defense Agent (AICA). We describe the rationale of the AICA concept, explain the methodology and purpose that drive the definition of the AICA Reference Architecture, and review some of the main features and challenges of AICAs.

Vortex dynamics is strongly connected with the mechanisms responsible for the photon detection of superconducting devices. Indeed, the local suppression of superconductivity by photon absorption may trigger vortex nucleation and motion effects, which can make the superconducting state unstable. In addition, scaling down the thickness of the superconducting films and/or the width of the bridge geometry can strongly influence the transport properties of superconducting films, e.g. affecting its critical current as well as its switching current into the normal state. Understanding such instability can boost the performances of those superconducting devices based on nanowire geometries. We present an experimental study on the resistive switching in NbN and NbTiN ultra-thin films with a thickness of few nanometers. Despite both films were patterned with the same microbridge geometry, the two superconducting materials show different behaviors at very low applied magnetic fields. A comparison with other low temperature superconducting materials outlines the influence of geometry effects on the superconducting transport properties of these materials particularly useful for devices applications.

The maximal four-dimensional supergravity with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging that arises from the reduction of massive IIA on a six-sphere has recently been shown to accommodate static BPS black holes with hyperbolic horizons. When restricted to the N=2 subsector that retains one vector multiplet and the universal hypermultiplet, the attractor mechanism was shown to fix both the vector charges and the scalar fields at the horizon to a unique configuration in terms of the gauging parameters. In order to assess the (non-)uniqueness of BPS black hole horizons from massive IIA, we extend the study of the attractor mechanism to other N=2 subsectors including additional matter multiplets. We note that, while extending the hypermultiplet sector does not modify the set of solutions to the attractor equations, the inclusion of additional vector multiplets results in new hyperbolic/spherical horizons containing free parameters. The model with three vector multiplets and the universal hypermultiplet, which is the massive IIA analogue of the STU-model from M-theory, may play a relevant role in massive IIA holography.

The stability against quench is one of the main issue to be pursued in a superconducting material which should be able to perform at very high levels of current densities. Here we focus on the connection between the critical current $I_c$ and the quenching current $I^*$ associated to the so-called flux-flow instability phenomenon, which sets in as an abrupt transition from the flux flow state to the normal state. To this purpose, we analyze several current-voltage characteristics of three types of iron-based thin films, acquired at different temperature and applied magnetic field values. For these samples, we discuss the impact of a possible coexistence of intrinsic electronic mechanisms and extrinsic thermal effects on the quenching current dependence upon the applied magnetic field. The differences between the quenching current and the critical current are reported also in the case of predominant intrinsic mechanisms. Carrying out a comparison with high-temperature cuprate superconductors, we suggest which material can be the best trade-off between maximum operating temperature, higher upper critical field and stability under high current bias.

An extended field theory is presented that captures the full SL(2) x O(6,6+n) duality group of four-dimensional half-maximal supergravities. The theory has section constraints whose two inequivalent solutions correspond to minimal D=10 supergravity and chiral half-maximal D=6 supergravity, respectively coupled to vector and tensor multiplets. The relation with O(6,6+n) (heterotic) double field theory is thoroughly discussed. Non-Abelian interactions as well as background fluxes are captured by a deformation of the generalised diffeomorphisms. Finally, making use of the SL(2) duality structure, it is shown how to generate gaugings with non-trivial de Roo-Wagemans angles via generalised Scherk-Schwarz ansaetze. Such gaugings allow for moduli stabilisation including the SL(2) dilaton.

We present a three-dimensional model, based on cohesive spherical particles, of rain-induced landslides. The rainwater infiltration into the soil follow the either the fractional or the fractal diffusion equations. We solve analytically the fractal diffusion partial differential equation (PDE) with particular boundary conditions to simulate a rainfall event. Then, for the PDE, we developed a numerical integration scheme that we integrate with MD (Molecular Dynamics) algorithm for the triggering and propagation of the simulated landslide. Therefore we test the numerical integration scheme of fractal diffusion equation with the analytical solution. We adopt the fractal diffusion equation in term of gravimetric water content that we use as input of triggering scheme based on Mohr-Coulomb limit-equilibrium criterion, adapted to particle level. Moreover, taking into account an interacting force Lennard-Jones inspired, we use a standard MD algorithm to update particle positions and velocities. Then we present results for homogeneous and heterogeneous systems (i.e. composed by particles with same or different radius respectively). Interestingly, in the heterogeneous case, we observe segregation effects due to the different volume of the particles. Finally we show the parameter sensibility analysis both for triggering and propagation phase. Our simulations confirm the results of our previous two-dimensional model and therefore the feasible applicability to real cases.

The latter, sharing the same Ce content, have been fabricated and annealed ad-hoc in order to differ only for the degree of disorder, mainly related to oxygen content and location, and, consequently, for the temperature dependence of the resistance: two of them present a minimum in the resistance and behave as a superconductor and as a metal, respectively, the third behaves as an insulator. The systematic coherence between the resistance and the relaxation parameters behaviors in temperature for all three samples is absolutely remarkable and shows that pump-probe measurements can be extremely sensitive to disorder as it drives the emergence of new excitations and of the related relaxation channels as in this paradigmatic case.

Working in a consistent, effective four-dimensional setting provided by $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity with a dyonic $\textrm{ISO(7)}$ gauging, we verify the existence of a rich web of supersymmetric domain walls triggered by the Romans mass that interpolate between the (four-dimensional description of the) D2-brane and various superconformal phases. We also construct domain walls for which both endpoints are superconformal. While most of our results are numerical, we provide analytic results for the $\textrm{SU}(3)\times \textrm{U}(1)$-invariant flow into an ${\cal N}=2$ conformal phase recently discovered.

Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ (NCCO) epitaxial thin films have been deposited on (100) SrTiO$_3$ substrates by DC sputtering technique in different atmosphere. The as-grown samples show different dependence of the in-plane resistivity at low temperature, when they are grown in pure argon atmosphere or in oxygen. Moreover, an unusual behaviour is also found when transport takes place in the presence of an external magnetic field. It is commonly accepted that the higher anisotropic properties of NCCO crystalline cell with respect to the hole doped YBCO and LSCO and the electric conduction mainly confined in the CuO$_2$ plane, strongly support the two-dimensional (2D) character of the current transport in this system. Results on the temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as on the magnetoresistance and the Hall coefficient, obtained on epitaxial NCCO thin films in the over-doped region ($x\ge0.15$) of the phase diagram are presented and discussed.

In particular, iron-chalcogenides have proved to be the most promising for the realization of high current carrying tapes. But their use on a large scale cannot be achieved without the understanding of the current stability mechanisms in these compounds. Indeed, we have recently observed the presence of flux flow instabilities features in Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF$_2$. Here we present the results of current-voltage characterizations at different temperatures and applied magnetic fields on Fe(Se,Te) microbridges grown on CaF$_2$. A scenario of moduli stabilisation based on the interplay between closed and open string sectors is explored in a bottom-up approach. We study N=1 effective supergravities inspired by type IIB orientifold constructions that include background fluxes and non-perturbative effects. The former generate the standard flux superpotential for the axiodilaton and complex structure moduli. The latter can be induced by gaugino condensation in a non-Abelian sector of D7-branes and involve the overall Kaehler modulus of the compactification as well as matter fields. We analyse the dynamics of this coupled system and show that it is compatible with single-step moduli stabilisation in a metastable de Sitter vacuum. A novelty of the scenario is that the F-term potential suffices to generate a positive cosmological constant and to stabilise all moduli, except for a flat direction that can be either lifted by a mass term or eaten up by an anomalous U(1).

Consistent ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$

Abstract:
Massive type IIA supergravity is shown to admit a consistent truncation on the six-sphere to maximal supergravity in four dimensions with a dyonic ISO(7) gauging. We obtain the complete, non-linear embedding of all the $D=4$ fields into the IIA metric and form potentials, and show its consistency. We first rewrite the IIA theory in an $\textrm{SO}(1,3) \times \textrm{SL}(7)$--covariant way. Then,…

Then, we employ an ${\cal N}=8$ SL(7)--covariant restriction of the $D=4$ tensor hierarchy in order to find the full embedding. The redundant $D=4$ degrees of freedom introduced by the tensor hierarchy can be eliminated by writing the embedding in terms of the field strengths and exploiting the restricted duality hierarchy. In particular, closed expressions for the Freund-Rubin term are found using this technique which reveal a pattern valid for other truncations. Finally, we show that the present ${\cal N}=8$ truncation of massive IIA on $S^6$ and the ${\cal N}=2$ truncation obtained when $S^6$ is equipped with its nearly-Kähler structure, overlap in the ${\cal N}=1$, G$_2$--invariant sector of the former.

These theories arise as consistent truncations of the electric/magnetic families of $\textrm{CSO}(p,q,r)_{c}$ maximal supergravities, with ${p+q+r=8}$, discovered by Dall'Agata et al. The $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ truncations describe $\textrm{SU}(3)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2} \times \textrm{SO}(3)$ invariant sectors, respectively, and contain AdS$_4$ solutions preserving $\mathcal{N}=1,2,3,4$ supersymmetry within the full theories, as well as various gauge symmetries. Realisations in terms of non-geometric type IIB as well as geometric massive type IIA backgrounds are also discussed. The aim of this note is to provide easy to handle superpotentials that facilitate the study of gravitational and gauge aspects of the $\textrm{CSO}(p,q,r)_{c}$ maximal supergravities avoiding the technicalities required in their construction.

We write down the Lagrangian and describe the tensor and duality hierarchies, focusing on an interesting subsector with closed field equations and supersymmetry transformations. We then truncate the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory to some smaller sectors with $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and SU(3), $\textrm{G}_2$ and SO(4) bosonic symmetry. Canonical and superpotential formulations for these sectors are given, and their vacuum structure and spectra is analysed. Unlike the purely electric ISO(7) gauging, the dyonic gauging displays a rich structure of vacua, all of them AdS. We recover all previously known ones and find a new $\mathcal{N}=1$ vacuum with SU(3) symmetry and various non-supersymmetric vacua, all of them stable within the full $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans mass. In particular, we find a critical point that uplifts to the first explicit ${\cal N}=2$ AdS$_4$ massive IIA background. We compute its free energy and that of the candidate dual Chern-Simons theory by localisation to a solvable matrix model, and find perfect agreement. This provides the first AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ precision match in massive type IIA string theory.

We argue that M-theory/massive IIA backgrounds including KK-monopoles are suitably described in the language of G-structures and their intrinsic torsion. To this end, we study classes of minimal supergravity models that admit an interpretation as twisted reductions in which the twist parameters are not restricted to satisfy the Jacobi constraints $ω\, ω=0$ required by an ordinary Scherk-Schwarz reduction. We first derive the correspondence between four-dimensional data and torsion classes of the internal space and, then, check the one-to-one correspondence between higher-dimensional and four-dimensional equations of motion. Remarkably, the whole construction holds regardless of the Jacobi constraints, thus shedding light upon the string/M-theory interpretation of (smeared) KK-monopoles.

We investigate reductions of M-theory beyond twisted tori by allowing the presence of KK6 monopoles (KKO6-planes) compatible with N=4 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The presence of KKO6-planes proves crucial to achieve full moduli stabilisation as they generate new universal moduli powers in the scalar potential. The resulting gauged supergravities turn out to be compatible with a weak G2 holonomy at N=1 as well as at some non-supersymmetric AdS4 vacua. The M-theory flux vacua we present here cannot be obtained from ordinary type IIA orientifold reductions including background fluxes, D6-branes (O6-planes) and/or KK5 (KKO5) sources. However, from a four-dimensional point of view, they still admit a description in terms of so-called non-geometric fluxes. In this sense we provide the M-theory interpretation for such non-geometric type IIA flux vacua.

We provide the dictionary between four-dimensional gauged supergravity and type II compactifications on $\mathbb{T}^6$ with metric and gauge fluxes in the absence of supersymmetry breaking sources, such as branes and orientifold planes. Secondly, we prove that there is a unique isotropic compactification allowing for critical points. It corresponds to a type IIA background given by a product of two 3-tori with SO(3) twists and results in a unique theory (gauging) with a non-semisimple gauge algebra. Besides the known four AdS solutions surviving the orientifold projection to $\mathcal{N}=4$ induced by O6-planes, this theory contains a novel AdS solution that requires non-trivial orientifold-odd fluxes, hence being a genuine critical point of the $\mathcal{N}=8$ theory.

We revise the SU(3)-invariant sector of $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with dyonic SO(8) gaugings. By using the embedding tensor formalism, analytic expressions for the scalar potential, superpotential(s) and fermion mass terms are obtained as a function of the electromagnetic phase $ω$ and the scalars in the theory. Equipped with these results, we explore non-supersymmetric AdS critical points at $ω\neq 0$ for which perturbative stability could not be analysed before. The $ω$-dependent superpotential is then used to derive first-order flow equations and obtain new BPS domain-wall solutions at $ω\neq 0$. We numerically look at steepest-descent paths motivated by the (conjectured) RG flows.

It was recently shown that this rotation leads to a one-parameter family of SO(8) supergravities. It is an open question what the period of this parameter is. This issue is investigated in the SO(4) invariant sectors of the theory. We classify such critical points and find a novel branch of non-supersymmetric and unstable solutions, whose embedding is related via triality to the two known ones. Secondly, we show that the three branches of solutions lead to a Pi/4 periodicity of the vacuum structure. The general interrelations between triality and periodicity are discussed. Finally, we comment on the connection to other gauge groups as well as the possibility to achieve (non-)perturbative stability around AdS/Mkw/dS transitions.

We investigate the SU(3)-invariant sector of the one-parameter family of SO(8) gauged maximal supergravity that has been recently proposed. To this end, we construct the N=2 truncation of this theory and analyse its full vacuum structure. The number of critical point is doubled and includes new N=0 and N=1 branches. We numerically exhibit the parameter dependence of the location and cosmological constant of all extrema. Moreover, we provide their analytic expressions for cases of special interest. Connections with three-dimensional RG-flows are pointed out. Finally, while the mass spectra are found to be parameter independent in most cases, we show that the novel non-supersymmetric branch with SU(3) invariance provides the first counterexample to this.
