We study nonlocal bright solitons subject to external spatially nonuniform potentials. If the potential is slowly varying on the soliton scale, we derive analytical soliton solutions behaving like Newtonian particles. If the potential has the form of an attractive delta-like point defect, we identify different dynamical regimes, defined by the relative strength of the nonlocality and the point defect. In these regimes, the soliton can be trapped at the defect's location, via a nonlinear resonance with a defect mode -- which is found analytically -- reflected by or transmitted through the defect, featuring a wave behavior. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by results of direct numerical simulations.

We study the propagation of both low- and high-amplitude ring-shaped sound waves in a 2D square lattice of acoustic waveguides with Helmholtz resonators. We show that the inclusion of the Helmholtz resonators suppresses the inherent anisotropy of the system in the low frequency regime allowing for radially symmetric solutions. By employing the electroacoustic analogue approach and asymptotic methods we derive an effective cylindrical Korteweg de Vries (cKdV) equation. Low-amplitude waveforms are self-similar structures of the Airy function profile, while high-amplitude ones are of the form of cylindrical solitons. Our analytical predictions are corroborated by results of direct numerical simulations, with a very good agreement between the two.

The interaction between two co-propagating electromagnetic pulses in a magnetized plasma is considered, from first principles, relying on a fluid-Maxwell model. Two circularly polarized wavepackets by same group velocities are considered, characterized by opposite circular polarization, to be identified as left-hand- or right hand circularly polarized (i.e. LCP or RCP, respectively). A multiscale perturbative technique is adopted, leading to a pair of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger-type (NLS) equations for the modulated amplitudes of the respective vector potentials associated with the two pulses. Systematic analysis reveals the existence, in certain frequency bands, of three different types of vector soliton modes: an LCP-bright/RCP-bright coupled soliton pair state, an LCP bright/RCP-dark soliton pair, and an LCP-dark/RCP-bright soliton pair. The value of the magnetic field plays a critical role since it determines the type of vector solitons that may occur in certain frequency bands and, on the other hand, it affects the width of those frequency bands that are characterized by a specific type of vector soliton (type). The magnetic field (strength) thus arises as an order parameter, affecting the existence conditions of each type of solution (in the form of an envelope soliton pair). An exhaustive parametric investigation is presented in terms of frequency bands and in a wide range of magnetic field (strength) values, leading to results that may be applicable in beam-plasma interaction scenarios as well as in space plasmas and in the ionosphere.

An asymmetric pair of coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (CNLS) equations has been derived through a multiscale perturbation method applied to a plasma fluid model, in which two wavepackets of distinct carrier wavenumbers and amplitudes are allowed to co-propagate and interact. The original fluid model was set up for a non-magnetized plasma consisting of cold inertial ions evolving against a $κ-$distributed electron background in 1D. The reduction procedure resulting in the CNLS equations has provided analytical expressions for the dispersion, self-modulation and cross-coupling coefficients in terms of the carrier wavenumbers.
The system admits various types of vector solitons (VSs), physically representing nonlinear localized electrostatic plasma modes. The possibility for either bright (B) or dark (D) type excitations for either of the two waves provides four combinations for the envelope pair (BB, BD, DB, DD). Moreover, the soliton parameters are also calculated for each type of VS in its respective area of existence. The dependence of the VS characteristics on the carrier wavenumbers and the spectral index $κ$ has been explored. In certain cases, the amplitude of one component may exceed its counterpart (second amplitude) by a factor 2.5 or higher, indicating that extremely asymmetric waves may be formed due to modulational interactions among the wavepackets.
As $κ$ decreases from large values, modulational instability (MI) occurs in larger areas of the parameter plane(s) and with higher growth rates. The distribution of different types of VSs on the parameter plane(s) also varies significantly with decreasing $κ$, and in fact dramatically for $κ$ between $3$ and $2$. Deviation from the Maxwell-Boltzmann picture therefore seems to favor MI as a precursor to the formation of bright (predominantly) type envelope excitations and freak waves.

We study a spherical, self-gravitating fluid model, which finds applications in cosmic structure formation. We argue that since the system features nonlinearity and gravity-induced dispersion, the emergence of solitons becomes possible. We thus employ a multiscale expansion method to study, in the weakly nonlinear regime, the evolution of small-amplitude perturbations around the equilibrium state. This way, we derive a spherical nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation that governs the envelope of the perturbations. The effective NLS description allows us to predict a "nonlinear instability" (occurring in the nonlinear regime of the system), namely, the modulational instability which, in turn, may give rise to spherical soliton states. The latter feature a very slow (polynomial) curvature-induced decay in time. The soliton profiles may be used to describe the shape of dark matter halos at the rims of the galaxies.

We explore the dynamics and interactions of multiple bright droplets and bubbles, as well as the interactions of kinks with droplets and with antikinks, in the extended one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii model including the Lee-Huang-Yang correction. Existence regions are identified for the one-dimensional droplets and bubbles in terms of their chemical potential, verifying the stability of the droplets and exposing the instability of the bubbles. The limiting case of the droplet family is a stable kink. The interactions between droplets demonstrate in-phase (out-of-phase) attraction (repulsion), with the so-called Manton's method explicating the observed dynamical response, and mixed behavior for intermediate values of the phase shift. Droplets bearing different chemical potentials experience mass-exchange phenomena. Individual bubbles exhibit core expansion and mutual attraction prior to their destabilization. Droplets interacting with kinks are absorbed by them, a process accompanied by the emission of dispersive shock waves and gray solitons. Kink-antikink interactions are repulsive, generating counter-propagating shock waves. Our findings reveal dynamical features of droplets and kinks that can be detected in current experiments.

We unravel the existence and stability properties of dark soliton solutions as they extend from the regime of trapped quantum droplets towards the Thomas-Fermi limit in homonuclear symmetric Bose mixtures. Leveraging a phase-plane analysis, we identify the regimes of existence of different types of quantum droplets and subsequently examine the possibility of black and gray solitons and kink-type structures in this system. Moreover, we employ the Landau dynamics approach to extract an analytical estimate of the oscillation frequency of a single dark soliton in the relevant extended Gross-Pitaevskii model. Within this framework, we also find that the single soliton immersed in a droplet is stable, while multisoliton configurations exhibit parametric windows of oscillatory instabilities. Our results pave the way for studying dynamical features of nonlinear multisoliton excitations in a droplet environment in contemporary experimental settings.

The low energy properties of SOBECs in any of the three branches of the single particle dispersion relation can be described by suitable scalar nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations which we obtain using multiple-scale expansions. This enables us to examine a variety of different configurations, such as dark solitary waves associated with higher energy branches, as well as dark and bright structures in the lowest branch. The lowest branch can also exhibit a ``superstripe'' phase that supports solitary waves. In all cases, we provide explicit expressions for the NLS coefficients, and confirm their validity with full numerical simulations of the SOBEC system including a harmonic confining potential.

We study systematically the scattering of solitons on localized impurities in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with a saturable nonlinearity. We show that, apart from the generic scenario of the outcome of the scattering process, namely the emergence of a reflected and a transmitted soliton, other effects can occur. In particular, it is found that, in the case of an attractive impurity, a soliton trapped at the impurity can coexist with the reflected and transmitted ones. This effect, which resembles the behaviour of a quantum particle interacting with a narrow impurity, has not previously reported for discrete setting. Parameter regimes are explored for determining soliton splitting on the impurity with special attention to equal soliton splitting.

We study the propagation of high-amplitude sound waves, in the form of pulse-like solitary waves, in an air-filled acoustic waveguide of periodically varying cross section. Our numerical simulations, solving the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions, as well as our experimental results, strongly suggest that nonlinear losses, originated from vortex shedding (at the segment changes) are crucial in the dynamics of high amplitude pulses. We find that, even in the presence of strong dissipation, the solitary wave roughly retains its characteristics (as described by the amplitude-velocity-width relations), obtained by the derivation and analysis of an effective Boussinesq equation. In addition, we propose a transmission-line based numerical scheme, able to capture well the experimental results. The proposed design offers a new playground for the study of the combined effects of dispersion, nonlinearity and dissipation in air-borne acoustics, while, due to its simplicity, it can be extended to higher dimensions.

It is found that the dispersive shock wave structure depends critically on the input beam power. In addition, it is known that nematic dispersive shock waves are resonant and the structure of this resonant is also critically dependent on the beam power. Whitham modulation theory is used to find solutions for the six regimes with the existence intervals for each identified. These dispersive shock wave solutions are compared with full numerical solutions of the nematic equations and excellent agreement is found.

We find that single- and multiple-dark-soliton states can exist and are generically robust in the presence of long-range interactions. We analyze the modes of vibration of such excitations and find that their respective frequencies are significantly upshifted as the strength of the long-range interactions is increased. Indeed, we find that a prefactor of the long-range interactions considered comparable to the trap strength may upshift the dark soliton oscillation frequency by {\it an order of magnitude}, in comparison to the well established one of $Ω/\sqrt{2}$ in a trap of frequency $Ω$.

The azimuthal instabilities of the rings are explored via the so-called filament method. As a result of their nonlinear interaction, the vortices are found to play a stabilizing role on the rings, yet their effect is not sufficient to offer complete stabilization of RDSs. Nevertheless, complete stabilization of the relevant configuration can be achieved by the presence of external ring-shaped barrier potentials. Interactions of multiple rings are also explored, and their equilibrium positions (as a result of their own curvature and their tail-tail interactions) are identified. In this case too, stabilization is achieved via multi-ring external barrier potentials.

We study asymptotic reductions and solitary waves of a weakly nonlocal defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model. The hydrodynamic form of the latter is analyzed by means of multiscale expansion methods. To the leading-order of approximation (where only the first moment of the response function is present), we show that solitary waves, in the form of dark solitons, are governed by an effective Boussinesq/Benney- Luke (BBL) equation, which describes bidirectional waves in shallow water. Then, for long times, we reduce the BBL equation to a pair of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations for right- and left-going waves, and show that the BBL solitary wave transforms into a KdV soliton. In addition, to the next order of approximation (where both the first and second moment of the response function are present), we find that dark solitons are governed by a higher-order perturbed KdV (pKdV) equation, which has been used to describe ion-acoustic solitons in plasmas and water waves in the presence of higherorder effects. The pKdV equation is approximated by a higher-order integrable system and, as a result, only insubstantial changes in the soliton shape and velocity are found, while no radiation tails (in this effective KdV picture) are produced.

We revisit the problem of transverse instability of a 2D breather stripe of the sine-Gordon (sG) equation. A numerically computed Floquet spectrum of the stripe is compared to analytical predictions developed by means of multiple-scale perturbation theory showing good agreement in the long-wavelength limit. By means of direct simulations, it is found that the instability leads to a breakup of the quasi-1D breather in a chain of interacting 2D radial breathers that appear to be fairly robust in the dynamics. The stability and dynamics of radial breathers in a finite domain are studied in detail by means of numerical methods. Different families of such solutions are identified. They develop small-amplitude spatially oscillating tails ("nanoptera") through a resonance of higher-order breather's harmonics with linear modes ("phonons") belonging to the continuous spectrum. These results demonstrate the ability of the 2D sG model within our finite domain computations to localize energy in long-lived, self-trapped breathing excitations.

Employing the quasi-neutral approximation and the conservation of momentum flux and energy flux in the frame co-traveling with the wave, the exact analytical solution of the stationary solitary pulse is found analytically in terms of particle densities, parallel and transverse velocities, as well as transverse magnetic fields. Subsequently, this solution is generalized in the form of periodic waveforms represented by cnoidal-type waves. These considerations are fully analytical in the case where the total angular momentum flux $L$, due to the ion and electron motion together with the contribution due to the Maxwell stresses, vanishes. We consider the Adlam-Allen (AA) system of partial differential equations which, arguably, is the first model that was introduced to describe solitary waves in the context of propagation of hydrodynamic disturbances in collisionless plasmas. Here, we identify the solitary waves of the model by implementing a dynamical systems approach. The latter suggests that the model also possesses periodic wave solutions --which reduce to the solitary wave in the limiting case of infinite period-- as well as rational solutions which are obtained herein. In addition, employing a long-wave approximation via a relevant multiscale expansion method, we establish the asymptotic reduction of the AA system to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. Such a reduction, is not only another justification for the above solitary wave dynamics, but also may offer additional insights for the emergence of other possible plasma waves. Direct numerical simulations are performed for the study of multiple solitary waves and their pairwise interactions. The stability of solitary waves is discussed in terms of potentially relevant criteria, while the robustness of spatially periodic wave solutions is touched upon by our numerical experiments.

In the present work, a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model is studied by means of a recent technique that identifies solutions of partial differential equations, by considering them as fixed points in {\it space-time}. This methodology allows to perform a continuation of well-known solutions of the local NLS model to the nonlocal case. Four different examples of this type are presented, namely (a) the rogue wave in the form of the Peregrine soliton, (b) the generalization thereof in the form of the Kuznetsov-Ma breather, as well as two spatio-temporally periodic solutions in the form of elliptic functions. Importantly, all four waveforms can be continued in intervals of the parameter controlling the nonlocality of the model. The first two can be continued in a narrower interval, while the periodic ones can be extended to arbitrary nonlocalities and, in fact, present an intriguing bifurcation whereby they merge with (only) spatially periodic structures. The results suggest the generic relevance of rogue waves and related structures, as well as periodic solutions, in nonlocal NLS models.

A prototypical example of a rogue wave structure in a two-dimensional model is presented in the context of the Davey-Stewartson~II (DS~II) equation arising in water waves. The analytical methodology involves a Taylor expansion of an eigenfunctionof the model's Lax pair which is used to form a hierarchy of infinitely many new eigenfunctions. These are used for the construction of two-dimensional (2D) rogue waves (RWs) of the DS~II equation by the even-fold Darboux transformation (DT). The obtained 2D RWs, which are localized in both space and time, can be viewed as a 2D analogue of the Peregrine soliton and are thus natural candidates to describe oceanic RW phenomena,as well as ones in 2D fluid systems and water tanks.

In the present work we examine the statics and dynamics of multiple parallel dark soliton stripes in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Our principal goal is to study the effect of the interaction between the stripes on the transverse instability of the individual stripes. We use a recently developed adiabatic invariant formulation to derive a quasi-analytical prediction for the stripe equilibrium position and for the Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum of excitations of stationary stripes. The cases of two-, three- and four-stripe states are studied in detail. We subsequently test our predictions against numerical simulations of the full two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the number of unstable eigenmodes increases as the number of stripes increases due to (unstable) relative motions between the stripes. Their corresponding growth rates do not significantly change, although for large chemical potentials, the larger the stripe number, the larger the maximal instability growth rate. The instability induced dynamics of multiple stripe states and their decay into vortices are also investigated.

We perform a numerical study of the initial-boundary value problem, with vanishing boundary conditions, of a driven nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with linear damping and a Gaussian driver. We identify Peregrine-like rogue waveforms, excited by two different types of vanishing initial data decaying at an algebraic or exponential rate. The observed extreme events emerge on top of a decaying support. Depending on the spatial/temporal scales of the driver, the transient dynamics -- prior to the eventual decay of the solutions -- may resemble the one in the semiclassical limit of the integrable NLS, or may, e.g., lead to large-amplitude breather-like patterns. The effects of the damping strength and driving amplitude, in suppressing or enhancing respectively the relevant features, as well as of the phase of the driver in the construction of a diverse array of spatiotemporal patterns, are numerically analyzed.

We consider the energy landscape of a dissipative Klein-Gordon lattice with a $φ^4$ on-site potential. Our analysis is based on suitable energy arguments, combined with a discrete version of the Łojasiewicz inequality, in order to justify the convergence to a single, nontrivial equilibrium for all initial configurations of the lattice. Then, global bifurcation theory is explored, to illustrate that in the discrete regime all linear states lead to nonlinear generalizations of equilibrium states. Direct numerical simulations reveal the rich structure of the equilibrium set, consisting of non-trivial topological (kink-shaped) interpolations between the adjacent minima of the on-site potential, and the wealth of dynamical convergence possibilities. These dynamical evolution results also provide insight on the potential stability of the equilibrium branches, and glimpses of the emerging global bifurcation structure, elucidating the role of the interplay between discreteness, nonlinearity and dissipation.

The existence of stationary solitary waves in symmetric and non-symmetric complex potentials is studied by means of Melnikov's perturbation method. The latter provides analytical conditions for the existence of such waves that bifurcate from the homogeneous nonlinear modes of the system and are located at specific positions with respect to the underlying potential. It is shown that the necessary conditions for the existence of continuous families of stationary solitary waves, as they arise from Melnikov theory, provide general constraints for the real and imaginary part of the potential, that are not restricted to symmetry conditions or specific types of potentials. Direct simulations are used to compare numerical results with the analytical predictions, as well as to investigate the propagation dynamics of the solitary waves.

We study a two-dimensional incoherently pumped exciton-polariton condensate described by an open-dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the polariton dynamics coupled to a rate equation for the exciton density. Adopting a hydrodynamic approach, we use multiscale expansion methods to derive several models appearing in the context of shallow water waves with viscosity. In particular, we derive a Boussinesq/Benney-Luke type equation and its far-field expansion in terms of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-I (KP-I) equations for right- and left-going waves. From the KP-I model, we predict the existence of vorticity-free, weakly (algebraically) localized two-dimensional dark-lump solitons. We find that, in the presence of dissipation, dark lumps exhibit a lifetime three times larger than that of planar dark solitons. Direct numerical simulations show that dark lumps do exist, and their dissipative dynamics is well captured by our analytical approximation. It is also shown that lump-like and vortex-like structures can spontaneously be formed as a result of the transverse "snaking" instability of dark soliton stripes.

In both cases, analytical predictions regarding the stability and dynamics of these structures are obtained. One of our main findings is the determination of the instability modes of the waves as a function of the parameters of the system (such as the trap strength and the chemical potential). Our analytical predictions are favorably compared with results of direct numerical simulations.

The subject of PT-symmetry and its areas of application have been blossoming over the past decade. Here, we consider a nonlinear Schrödinger model with a complex potential that can be tuned controllably away from being PT-symmetric, as it might be the case in realistic applications. We utilize two parameters: the first one breaks PT-symmetry but retains a proportionality between the imaginary and the derivative of the real part of the potential; the second one, detunes from this latter proportionality. It is shown that the departure of the potential from the PT -symmetric form does not allow for the numerical identification of exact stationary solutions. Nevertheless, it is of crucial importance to consider the dynamical evolution of initial beam profiles. In that light, we define a suitable notion of optimization and find that even for non PT-symmetric cases, the beam dynamics, both in 1D and 2D -although prone to weak growth or decay- suggests that the optimized profiles do not change significantly under propagation for specific parameter regimes.

We demonstrate a possibility to make rogue waves (RWs) in the form of the Peregrine soliton (PS) and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers (KMBs) effectively stable objects, with the help of properly defined dispersion or nonlinearity management applied to the continuous-wave (CW) background supporting the RWs. In particular, it is found that either management scheme, if applied along the longitudinal coordinate, making the underlying nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) selfdefocusing in the course of disappearance of the PS, indeed stabilizes the global solution with respect to the modulational instability of the background. In the process, additional excitations are generated, namely, dispersive shock waves and, in some cases, also a pair of slowly separating dark solitons. Further, the nonlinearity-management format, which makes the NLSE defocusing outside of a finite domain in the transverse direction, enables the stabilization of the KMBs, in the form of confined oscillating states. On the other hand, a nonlinearity-management format applied periodically along the propagation direction, creates expanding patterns featuring multiplication of KMBs through their cascading fission.

Our model of choice will be the so-called Salerno model, which interpolates between the AL and the DNLS models. We find that rogue wave events essentially are drastically distorted even for very slight perturbations of the homotopic parameter connecting the two models off of the integrable limit. Our results suggest that the Peregrine soliton structure is a rather sensitive feature of the integrable limit, which may not persist under "generic" perturbations of the limiting integrable case.

Considering a perturbative regime of sufficiently small reservoir excitations, we use the reductive perturbation method, to reduce the system to a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with linear loss. This model is used to describe the analytical form and the dynamics of dark solitons. We show that the polariton field supports decaying dark soliton solutions with a decay rate determined analytically in the weak pumping regime. We also find that the dark soliton evolution is accompanied by a shelf, whose dynamics follows qualitatively the effective KdV picture.

We consider the motion of individual two-dimensional vortices in general radially symmetric potentials in Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that although in the special case of the parabolic trap there is a logarithmic correction in the dependence of the precession frequency $ω$ on the chemical potential $μ$, this is no longer true for a general potential $V(r) \propto r^p$. Our calculations suggest that for $p>2$, the precession frequency scales with $μ$ as $ω\sim μ^{-2/p}$. This theoretical prediction is corroborated by numerical computations, both at the level of spectral (Bogolyubov-de Gennes) stability analysis by identifying the relevant precession mode dependence on $μ$, but also through direct numerical computations of the vortex evolution in the large $μ$, so-called Thomas-Fermi, limit. Additionally, the dependence of the precession frequency on the radius of an initially displaced from the center vortex is examined and the corresponding predictions are tested against numerical results.

Quantum vortices, the quantized version of classical vortices, play a prominent role in superfluid and superconductor phase transitions. However, their exploration at a particle level in open quantum systems has gained considerable attention only recently. Here we study vortex pair interactions in a resonant polariton fluid created in a solid-state microcavity. By tracking the vortices on picosecond time scales, we reveal the role of nonlinearity, as well as of density and phase gradients, in driving their rotational dynamics. Such effects are also responsible for the split of composite spin-vortex molecules into elementary half-vortices, when seeding opposite vorticity between the two spinorial components. Remarkably, we also observe that vortices placed in close proximity experience a pull-push scenario leading to unusual scattering-like events that can be described by a tunable effective potential. Understanding vortex interactions can be useful in quantum hydrodynamics and in the development of vortex-based lattices, gyroscopes, and logic devices.

While matter-wave solitons in one- and two-component systems have been the focus of intense research efforts, an extension to three components has never been attempted in experiments, to the best of our knowledge. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of robust dark-bright-bright (DBB) and dark-dark-bright (DDB) solitons in a spinor $F=1$ condensate. We observe lifetimes on the order of hundreds of milliseconds for these structures. Our theoretical analysis, based on a multiscale expansion method, shows that small-amplitude solitons of these types obey universal long-short wave resonant interaction models, namely Yajima-Oikawa systems. Our experimental and analytical findings are corroborated by direct numerical simulations highlighting the persistence of, e.g., the DBB states, as well as their robust oscillations in the trap.

We focus here, more specifically, on bright discrete breathers which bifurcate from the lower edge of the linear dispersion relation at wavenumber $k=π$. Guided by the multiscale analysis, we calculate numerically both the stable inter-site centered and the unstable site-centered members of the relevant family. We quantify the associated stability via Floquet analysis and the Peierls-Nabarro barrier of the energy difference between these branches. Finally, we explore the dynamical implications of these findings towards the potential mobility or lack thereof (pinning) of such breather solutions.

We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large-density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modulation can cause a variety of features absent for homogeneous nonlinearities. Among them, we note the potential oscillatory instability even of the single dark soliton, the potential absence of instabilities in the immediate vicinity of the linear limit for two dark solitons, and the existence of an exponential instability associated with the in-phase motion of three dark solitons.

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model incorporating linear and nonlinear gain/loss. First, we describe analytically the dynamical regimes (depending on the gain/loss strengths), for finite-time collapse, decay, and global existence of solutions in the dynamics. Then, for all the above parametric regimes, we use direct numerical simulations to study the dynamics corresponding to algebraically decaying initial data. We identify crucial differences between the dynamics of vanishing initial conditions, and those converging to a finite constant background: in the former (latter) case we find strong (weak) collapse or decay, when the gain/loss parameters are selected from the relevant regimes. One of our main results, is that in all the above regimes, non-vanishing initial data transition through spatiotemporal, algebraically decaying waveforms. While the system is nonintegrable, the evolution of these waveforms is reminiscent to the evolution of the Peregrine rogue wave of the integrable NLS limit. The parametric range of gain and loss for which this phenomenology persists is also touched upon.

Motivated by the recent theoretical study of (bright) soliton diode effects in systems with multiple scatterers, as well as by experimental investigations of soliton-impurity interactions, we consider some prototypical case examples of interactions of dark solitons with a pair of scatterers. In a way fundamentally opposite to the case of bright solitons (but consonant to their "anti-particle character"), we find that dark solitons accelerate as they pass the first barrier and hence cannot be trapped by a second equal-height barrier. A pair of unequal barriers may lead to reflection from the second one, however trapping in the inter-barrier region cannot occur. We also give some examples of dynamical adjusting the barriers to trap the dark soliton in the inter-barrier region, yet we show that this can only occur over finite time horizons, with the dark soliton always escaping eventually, contrary again to what is potentially the case with bright solitons.

In the present work, we explore the existence, stability and dynamics of single and multiple vortex ring states that can arise in Bose-Einstein condensates. Earlier works have illustrated the bifurcation of such states, in the vicinity of the linear limit, for isotropic or anisotropic three-dimensional harmonic traps. Here, we extend these states to the regime of large chemical potentials, the so-called Thomas-Fermi limit, and explore their properties such as equilibrium radii and inter-ring distance, for multi-ring states, as well as their vibrational spectra and possible instabilities. In this limit, both the existence and stability characteristics can be partially traced to a particle picture that considers the rings as individual particles oscillating within the trap and interacting pairwise with one another. Finally, we examine some representative instability scenarios of the multi-ring dynamics including breakup and reconnections, as well as the transient formation of vortex lines.

In the present work, we aim at taking a step towards the spectral stability analysis of Peregrine solitons, i.e., wave structures that are used to emulate extreme wave events. Given the space-time localized nature of Peregrine solitons, this is a priori a non-trivial task. Our main tool in this effort will be the study of the spectral stability of the periodic generalization of the Peregrine soliton in the evolution variable, namely the Kuznetsov--Ma breather. Given the periodic structure of the latter, we compute the corresponding Floquet multipliers, and examine them in the limit where the period of the orbit tends to infinity. This way, we extrapolate towards the stability of the limiting structure, namely the Peregrine soliton. We find that multiple unstable modes of the background are enhanced, yet no additional unstable eigenmodes arise as the Peregrine limit is approached. We explore the instability evolution also in direct numerical simulations.

These are the transverse stability/instability modes and are the ones potentially responsible for the breakup of the soliton into structures such as vortices, vortex rings etc. We present the theory and case examples in 2D and 3D, corroborating the results by numerical stability and dynamical computations.

In the present work, we explore soliton and rogue-like wave solutions in the transmission line analogue of a nonlinear left-handed metamaterial. The nonlinearity is expressed through a voltagedependent and symmetric capacitance motivated by the recently developed ferroelectric barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film capacitor designs. We develop both the corresponding nonlinear dynamical lattice, as well as its reduction via a multiple scales expansion to a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model for the envelope of a given carrier wave. The reduced model can feature either a focusing or a defocusing nonlinearity depending on the frequency (wavenumber) of the carrier. We then consider the robustness of different types of solitary waves of the reduced model within the original nonlinear left-handed medium. We find that both bright and dark solitons persist in a suitable parametric regime, where the reduction to the NLS is valid. Additionally, for suitable initial conditions, we observe a rogue wave type of behavior, that differs significantly from the classic Peregrine rogue wave evolution, including most notably the breakup of a single Peregrine-like pattern into solutions with multiple wave peaks. Finally, we touch upon the behavior of generalized members of the family of the Peregrine solitons, namely Akhmediev breathers and Kuznetsov-Ma solitons, and explore how these evolve in the left-handed transmission line.

Families of soliton pairs, namely vector solitons, are found within the context of a coupled nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger system of equations, as appropriate for modeling beam propagation in nematic liquid crystals. In the focusing case, bright soliton pairs have been found to exist provided their amplitudes satisfy a specific condition. In our analytical approach, focused on the defocusing regime, we rely on a multiscale expansion methods, which reveals the existence of dark-dark and antidark-antidark solitons, obeying an effective Korteweg-de Vries equation, as well as dark-bright solitons, obeying an effective Mel'nikov system. These pairs are discriminated by the sign of a constant that links all physical parameters of the system to the amplitude of the stable continuous wave solutions, and, much like the focusing case, the solitons' amplitudes are linked leading to mutual guiding.
