Variationally equivalent problems and variations of Noether currents
Abstract: We consider systems of local variational problems defining non vanishing cohomolgy classes. In particular, we prove that the conserved current associated with a generalized symmetry, assumed to be also a symmetry of the variation of the corresponding local inverse problem, is variationally equivalent to the variation of the strong Noether current for the corresponding local system of Lagrangians.… ▽ More

Cohomological obstructions in locally variational field theories
Abstract: We study cohomological obstructions to the existence of global conserved quantities. In particular, we show that, if a given local variational problem is supposed to admit global solutions, certain cohomology classes cannot appear as obstructions. Vice versa, we obtain a new type of cohomological obstruction to the existence of global solutions for a variational problem.

Field equations or conservation laws?
Abstract: We explicate some epistemological implications of stationary principles and in particular of Noether Theorems. Noether's contribution to the problem of covariance, in fact, is epistemologically relevant, since it moves the attention from equations to conservation laws.

Boundary Conditions, Energies and Gravitational Heat in General Relativity (a Classical Analysis)
Abstract: The variation of the energy for a gravitational system is directly defined from the Hamiltonian field equations of General Relativity. When the variation of the energy is written in a covariant form it splits into two (covariant) contributions: one of them is the Komar energy, while the other is the so-called covariant ADM correction term. When specific boundary conditions are analyzed one sees… ▽ More

Conservation Laws and Variational Sequences in Gauge-Natural Theories
Abstract: In the classical Lagrangian approach to conservation laws of gauge-natural field theories a suitable (vector) density is known to generate the so--called {\em conserved Noether currents}. It turns out that along any section of the relevant gauge--natural bundle this density is the divergence of a skew--symmetric (tensor) density, which is called a {\em superpotential} for the conserved currents.… ▽ More

The Hessian and Jacobi Morphisms for Higher Order Calculus of Variations
Abstract: We formulate higher order variations of a Lagrangian in the geometric framework of jet prolongations of fibered manifolds. Our formalism applies to Lagrangians which depend on an arbitrary number of independent and dependent variables, together with higher order derivatives. In particular, we show that the second variation is equal (up to horizontal differentials) to the vertical differential of… ▽ More

A New Geometric Proposal for the Hamiltonian Description of Classical Field Theories
Abstract: We consider the geometric formulation of the Hamiltonian formalism for field theory in terms of {\em Hamiltonian connections} and {\em multisymplectic forms}. In this framework the covariant Hamilton equations for Mechanics and field theory are defined in terms of multisymplectic $(n+2)$--forms, where $n$ is the dimension of the basis manifold, together with connections on the configuration bund… ▽ More
