In this thesis we study short Josephson junctions which include a region with Rashba spin-orbit coupling effect. Our junctions consists of two superconductors (S) and a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) layer between them: S/2DEG/S junction. We also include two thin insulating interfaces between the superconductors and the 2DEG, which are capable of both normal and spin-flip scattering. The junctions we study are assumed to be in the ballistic limit and so, we do not consider the effects of impurities. The basic equations we use for our model are the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We give particular emphasis in the relation between the supercurrent of the junction as a function of difference of the phase parameters of the two superconductors. We study thoroughly how this relation differs to the change of the junction's length, the spin-orbit coupling constant, the normal scattering strength and the spin-flip scattering strength and direction. We are also interested in the 0-$π$ transition and the second harmonic appearance, as well as the symmetries which occur in the current-phase relation, for different geometries of the two spin-flip interfaces. In addition, we show how the Critical current of our junction is affected to the change of the above parameters and under which conditions it is optimized. Finally, we study the supercurrent flowing at zero phase difference (ZPC) of the two superconductors. We emphasize the conditions under which it is non-zero and also examine the cases it becomes maximized.

We study the Josephson effect in ballistic double-barrier SIFIS planar junctions, consisting of bulk superconductors (S), a clean metallic ferromagnet (F), and insulating interfaces (I). We solve the scattering problem based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations and derive a general expression for the dc Josephson current, valid for arbitrary interfacial transparency and Fermi wave vectors mismatch (FWVM). We consider the coherent regime in which quasiparticle transmission resonances contribute significantly to the Andreev process. The Josephson current is calculated for various parameters of the junction, and the influence of both interfacial transparency and FWVM is analyzed. For thin layers of strong ferromagnet and finite interfacial transparency, we find that coherent (geometrical) oscillations of the maximum Josephson current are superimposed on the oscillations related to the crossover between 0 and $π$ states. For the same case we find that the temperature-induced $0-π$ transition occurs if the junction is very close to the crossovers at zero temperature.

We investigate the interface coupling between the 2D sine-Gordon equation and the 2D wave equation in the context of a Josephson window junction using a finite volume numerical method and soliton perturbation theory. The geometry of the domain as well as the electrical coupling parameters are considered. When the linear region is located at each end of the nonlinear domain, we derive an effective 1D model, and using soliton perturbation theory, compute the fixed points that can trap either a kink or antikink at an interface between two sine-Gordon media. This approximate analysis is validated by comparing with the solution of the partial differential equation and describes kink motion in the 1D window junction. Using this, we analyze steady state kink motion and derive values for the average speed in the 1D and 2D systems. Finally we show how geometry and the coupling parameters can destabilize kink motion.

We present all the possible solutions of a Josephson junction with bias current and magnetic field with both inline and overlap geometry, and examine their stability. We follow the bifurcation of new solutions as we increase the junction length. We present all the possible solutions of a Josephson junction with bias current and magnetic field with both inline and overlap geometry, and examine their stability. We follow the bifurcation of new solutions as we increase the junction length. The analytical results, in terms of elliptic functions in the case of inline geometry, are in agreement with the numerical calculations and explain the strong hysteretic phenomena typically seen in the calculation of the maximum tunneling current. This suggests a different experimental approach based on the use, instead of the external magnetic field the modulus of the elliptic function or the related quantity the total magnetic flux to avoid hysteretic behavior and unfold the overlapping $I_{max}(H)$ curves.

Abstract:
The critical currents in Josephson junctions of conventional superconductors with macroscopic defects are calculated for different defect critical current densities as a function of the magnetic field. We also study the evolution of the different modes with the defect position, at zero external field. We study the stability of the solutions and derive simple arguments, that could help the defect…

We study the stability of the solutions and derive simple arguments, that could help the defect characterization. In most cases a reentrant behavior is seen, where both a maximum and a minimum current exist.

Abstract:
Phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to calculate the possible spontaneous vortex states that may exist at corner junctions of $d_{x^2-y^2}+ix$-wave, (where $x=s$ or $x=d_{xy}$) and s-wave superconductors. We study the magnetic flux and the critical current modulation with the junction orientation angle $θ$, the magnitude of the order parameter, and the magnetic field $H$. It is seen…

It is seen that the critical current $I_c$ versus the magnetic flux $Φ$ relation is symmetric / asymmetric for $x=d_{xy}/s$ when the orientation is exactly such that the lobes of the dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter points towards the two junctions, which are at right angles for the corner junction. The conclusion is that a measurement of the $I_c(Φ)$ relation may distinguish which symmetry ($d_{x^2-y^2}+is$ or $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$) the order parameter has.

The magnetic interference pattern and the spontaneous flux in unconventional Josephson junctions of superconductors with d+is symmetry are calculated for different reduced junction lengths and the relative factor of the d and s wave components. This is a time reversal broken symmetry state. We study the stability of the fractional vortex and antivortex which are spontaneously formed and examine their evolution as we change the length and the relative factor of d and s wave components. The asymmetry in the field modulated diffraction pattern exists for lengths as long as L=10λ_J.
