Convolutional neural networks have shown successful results in image classification achieving real-time results superior to the human level. However, texture images still pose some challenge to these models due, for example, to the limited availability of data for training in several problems where these images appear, high inter-class similarity, the absence of a global viewpoint of the object represented, and others. In this context, the present paper is focused on improving the accuracy of convolutional neural networks in texture classification. This is done by extracting features from multiple convolutional layers of a pretrained neural network and aggregating such features using Fisher vector. The reason for using features from earlier convolutional layers is obtaining information that is less domain specific. We verify the effectiveness of our method on texture classification of benchmark datasets, as well as on a practical task of Brazilian plant species identification. In both scenarios, Fisher vectors calculated on multiple layers outperform state-of-art methods, confirming that early convolutional layers provide important information about the texture image for classification.

Here we propose a new method for the classification of texture images combining fractal measures (fractal dimension, multifractal spectrum and lacunarity) with local binary patterns. More specifically we compute the box counting dimension of the local binary codes thresholded at different levels to compose the feature vector. The proposal is assessed in the classification of three benchmark databases: KTHTIPS-2b, UMD and UIUC as well as in a real-world problem, namely the identification of Brazilian plant species (database 1200Tex) using scanned images of their leaves. The proposed method demonstrated to be competitive with other state-of-the-art solutions reported in the literature. Such results confirmed the potential of combining a powerful local coding description with the multiscale information captured by the fractal dimension for texture classification.

In this work, we present a novel methodology for texture image recognition using a partial differential equation modeling. More specifically, we employ the pseudo-parabolic Buckley-Leverett equation to provide a dynamics to the digital image representation and collect local descriptors from those images evolving in time. For the local descriptors we employ the magnitude and signal binary patterns and a simple histogram of these features was capable of achieving promising results in a classification task. We compare the accuracy over well established benchmark texture databases and the results demonstrate competitiveness, even with the most modern deep learning approaches. The achieved results open space for future investigation on this type of modeling for image analysis, especially when there is no large amount of data for training deep learning models and therefore model-based approaches arise as suitable alternatives.

In this work we present an application of modern deep learning methodologies to the numerical solution of partial differential equations in transport models. More specifically, we employ a supervised deep neural network that takes into account the equation and initial conditions of the model. We apply it to the Riemann problems over the inviscid nonlinear Burger's equation, whose solutions might develop discontinuity (shock wave) and rarefaction, as well as to the classical one-dimensional Buckley-Leverett two-phase problem. The Buckley-Leverett case is slightly more complex and interesting because it has a non-convex flux function with one inflection point. Our results suggest that a relatively simple deep learning model was capable of achieving promising results in such challenging tasks, providing numerical approximation of entropy solutions with very good precision and consistent to classical as well as to recently novel numerical methods in these particular scenarios.

This work proposes a novel method based on a pseudo-parabolic diffusion process to be employed for texture recognition. The proposed operator is applied over a range of time scales giving rise to a family of images transformed by nonlinear filters. Therefore each of those images are encoded by a local descriptor (we use local binary patterns for that purpose) and they are summarized by a simple histogram, yielding in this way the image feature vector. The proposed approach is tested on the classification of well established benchmark texture databases and on a practical task of plant species recognition. In both cases, it is compared with several state-of-the-art methodologies employed for texture recognition. Our proposal outperforms those methods in terms of classification accuracy, confirming its competitiveness. The good performance can be justified to a large extent by the ability of the pseudo-parabolic operator to smooth possibly noisy details inside homogeneous regions of the image at the same time that it preserves discontinuities that convey critical information for the object description. Such results also confirm that model-based approaches like the proposed one can still be competitive with the omnipresent learning-based approaches, especially when the user does not have access to a powerful computational structure and a large amount of labeled data for training.

This work presents a new procedure to extract features of grey-level texture images based on the discrete Schroedinger transform. This is a non-linear transform where the image is mapped as the initial probability distribution of a wave function and such distribution evolves in time following the Schroedinger equation from Quantum Mechanics. The features are provided by statistical moments of the distribution measured at different times. The proposed method is applied to the classification of three databases of textures used for benchmark and compared to other well-known texture descriptors in the literature, such as textons, local binary patterns, multifractals, among others. All of them are outperformed by the proposed method in terms of percentage of images correctly classified. The proposal is also applied to the identification of plant species using scanned images of leaves and again it outperforms other texture methods. A test with images affected by Gaussian and "salt \& pepper" noise is also carried out, also with the best performance achieved by the Schroedinger descriptors.

This work proposes to obtain novel fractal descriptors from gray-level texture images by combining information from interior and boundary measures of the Minkowski dilation applied to the texture surface. At first, the image is converted into a surface where the height of each point is the gray intensity of the respective pixel in that position in the image. Thus, this surface is morphologically dilated by spheres. The radius of such spheres is ranged within an interval and the volume and the external area of the dilated structure are computed for each radius. The final descriptors are given by such measures concatenated and subject to a canonical transform to reduce the dimensionality. The proposal is an enhancement to the classical Bouligand-Minkowski fractal descriptors, where only the volume (interior) information is considered. As different structures may have the same volume, but not the same area, the proposal yields to more rich descriptors as confirmed by results on the classification of benchmark databases.

Texture analysis and classification remain as one of the biggest challenges for the field of computer vision and pattern recognition. On this matter, Gabor wavelets has proven to be a useful technique to characterize distinctive texture patterns. However, most of the approaches used to extract descriptors of the Gabor magnitude space usually fail in representing adequately the richness of detail present into a unique feature vector. In this paper, we propose a new method to enhance the Gabor wavelets process extracting a fractal signature of the magnitude spaces. Each signature is reduced using a canonical analysis function and concatenated to form the final feature vector. Experiments were conducted on several texture image databases to prove the power and effectiveness of the proposed method. Results obtained shown that this method outperforms other early proposed method, creating a more reliable technique for texture feature extraction.

Thus, leaf samples of fodder plant species \textit{Brachiaria} were previously identified, collected and scanned to be treated by means of artificial vision to make the database and be used in subsequent classifications. Forage crops used were: \textit{Brachiaria decumbens} cv. IPEAN; \textit{Brachiaria ruziziensis} Germain \& Evrard; \textit{Brachiaria Brizantha} (Hochst. ex. A. Rich.) Stapf; \textit{Brachiaria arrecta} (Hack.) Stent. and \textit{Brachiaria spp}. The images were analyzed by the fractal descriptors method, where a set of measures are obtained from the values of the fractal dimension at different scales. Therefore such values are used as inputs for a state-of-the-art classifier, the Support Vector Machine, which finally discriminates the images according to the respective species.

This work proposes a novel technique for the numerical calculus of the fractal dimension of fractal objects which can be represented as a closed contour. The proposed method maps the fractal contour onto a complex signal and calculates its fractal dimension using the Fourier transform. The Fourier power spectrum is obtained and an exponential relation is verified between the power and the frequency. From the parameter (exponent) of the relation, it is obtained the fractal dimension. The method is compared to other classical fractal dimension estimation methods in the literature, e. g., Bouligand-Minkowski, box-couting and classical Fourier. The comparison is achieved by the calculus of the fractal dimension of fractal contours whose dimensions are well-known analytically.
