We formulate general conditions under which the strong CP problem is solved by spontaneous CP violation. Quark-mass matrix elements are polynomials in the CP-breaking order parameters, engineered such that their determinant is a real constant. This scheme permits only a limited number of textures. These conditions can be realized in supersymmetric theories with CP as an anomaly-free local flavour symmetry, suggesting a unified solution to the strong CP problem and the flavour puzzle. Our solution can be implemented using either modular invariance or a local U(1) symmetry. We present modular-invariant realizations where matter fields are assigned small modular weights $\pm2$ ($\pm1$), utilising higher levels $N=2$ ($N=3$). Heavy quarks are in general not required, but their presence allows for models where colored particles fill non-singlet representations of the flavour group.

We analyze a general class of locally supersymmetric, CP and modular invariant models of lepton masses depending on two complex moduli taking values in the vicinity of a fixed point, where the theory enjoys a residual symmetry under a finite group. Like in models that depend on a single modulus, we find that all physical quantities exhibit a universal scaling with the distance from the fixed point. There is no dependence on the level of the construction, the weights of matter multiplets and their representations, with the only restriction that electroweak lepton doublets transform as irreducible triplets of the finite modular group. Also the form of the kinetic terms, which here are assumed to be neither minimal nor flavor blind, is irrelevant to the outcome. The result is remarkably simple and the whole class of examined theories gives rise to five independent patterns of neutrino mass matrices. Only in one of them, the predicted scaling agrees with the observed neutrino mass ratios and lepton mixing angles, exactly as in single modulus theories living close to $τ=i$.

We look for signals of critical behavior in the Yukawa sector. By reviewing a set of models for the fermion masses, we select those where a symmetry-breaking order parameter sits at a transition point between a disordered phase and an ordered one. Many models based on ordinary flavor symmetries are formulated in terms of small corrections to a symmetric limit, which can hardly be interpreted unambiguously as a sign of near-criticality. Different is the case of nonlinearly realized flavor symmetries when the system is always in the broken phase. By inspecting a large number of modular and CP invariant models of lepton masses, we find that most of them cluster around the fixed point $τ= i$, where the system enjoys enhanced symmetry. Since a priori all values of the modulus $τ$ are equally acceptable to describe the fermion spectrum, we regard this preference as a hint of near-criticality. We analyze in detail these models in the vicinity of all fixed points, showing that only one possibility provides a good description of neutrino masses and mixing angles. Near the fixed points the models exhibit a universal behavior. Mass ratios and mixing angles scale with appropriate powers of the order parameter, independently of the details of the theory, a feature reminiscent of systems belonging to the same universality class in second-order phase transitions. The observations of this work are inspired by the role near-criticality might play in solving the naturalness problem and are motivated by the fascinating possibility that most of the free parameters of the Standard Model could find a common explanation.

We derive the finite one-loop counterterm required to restore the Ward Identities broken by the regularization scheme in chiral gauge theories. Our result is an analytic expression applicable to a wide class of regularizations satisfying a few general properties. We adopt the background field method, which ensures background gauge invariance in the quantized theory, and focus on renormalizable chiral theories with arbitrary gauge group and fermions in general representations. Our approach can be extended to theories involving scalars, such as the Standard Model, or to non-renormalizable theories, such as the SMEFT. As a concrete application, we work out the finite counterterm at one loop in the Standard Model, within dimensional regularization and the Breitenlohner-Maison-'t Hooft-Veltman prescription for $γ_5$.

General results from the cohomology of the BRST operator do not prevent potential anomalies arising from the non-renormalizable sector, when the gauge group is not semi-simple, like in the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT). By considering a simple explicit model that mimics the SMEFT properties, we compute the anomaly in the regularized theory, including a complete set of dimension six operators. We show that the dependence of the anomaly on the non-renormalizable part can be removed by adding a local counterterm to the theory. As a result the condition for gauge anomaly cancellation is completely controlled by the charge assignment of the fermion sector, as in the renormalizable theory.

Moduli span a coset space $G/K$, where $G$ is a Lie group and $K$ is a compact subgroup of $G$, modded out by $Γ$. For a general choice of $G$, $K$, $Γ$ and a generic matter content, we explicitly construct a minimal Kähler potential and a general superpotential, for both rigid and local $N=1$ supersymmetric theories. We also specialize our construction to the case $G=Sp(2g,R)$, $K=U(g)$ and $Γ=Sp(2g,Z)$, whose automorphic forms are Siegel modular forms. We show how our general theory can be consistently restricted to multi-dimensional regions of the moduli space enjoying residual symmetries. After choosing $g=2$, we present several examples of models for lepton and quark masses where Yukawa couplings are Siegel modular forms of level 2.

We explore alternative descriptions of the charged lepton sector in modular invariant models of lepton masses and mixing angles. In addition to the modulus, the symmetry breaking sector of our models includes ordinary flavons. Neutrino mass terms depend only on the modulus and are tailored to minimize the number of free parameters. The charged lepton Yukawa couplings rely upon the flavons alone. We build modular invariant models at levels 4 and 5, where neutrino masses are described both in terms of the Weinberg operator or through a type I seesaw mechanism. At level 4, our models reproduce the hierarchy among electron, muon and tau masses by letting the weights play the role of Froggatt-Nielsen charges. At level 5, our setup allows the treatment of left and right handed charged leptons on the same footing. We have optimized the free parameters of our models in order to match the experimental data, obtaining a good degree of compatibility and predictions for the absolute neutrino masses and the $CP$ violating phases. At a more fundamental level, the whole lepton sector could be correctly described by the simultaneous presence of several moduli. Our examples are meant to make a first step in this direction.

We analyze a modular invariant model of lepton masses, with neutrino masses originating either from the Weinberg operator or from the seesaw. The constraint provided by modular invariance is so strong that neutrino mass ratios, lepton mixing angles and Dirac/Majorana phases do not depend on any Lagrangian parameter. They only depend on the vacuum of the theory, parametrized in terms of a complex modulus and a real field. Thus eight measurable quantities are described by the three vacuum parameters, whose optimization provides an excellent fit to data for the Weinberg operator and a good fit for the seesaw case. Neutrino masses from the Weinberg operator (seesaw) have inverted (normal) ordering. Several sources of potential corrections, such as higher dimensional operators, renormalization group evolution and supersymmetry breaking effects, are carefully discussed and shown not to affect the predictions under reasonable conditions.

We explore a new class of supersymmetric models for lepton masses and mixing angles where the role of flavour symmetry is played by modular invariance. The building blocks are modular forms of level N and matter supermultiplets, both transforming in representations of a finite discrete group Gamma_N. In the simplest version of these models, Yukawa couplings are just modular forms and the only source of flavour symmetry breaking is the vacuum expectation value of a single complex field, the modulus. In the special case where modular forms are constant functions the whole construction collapses to a supersymmetric flavour model invariant under Gamma_N, the case treated so far in the literature. The framework has a number of appealing features. Flavon fields other than the modulus might not be needed. Neutrino masses and mixing angles are simultaneously constrained by the modular symmetry. As long as supersymmetry is exact, modular invariance determines all higher-dimensional operators in the superpotential. We discuss the general framework and we provide complete examples of the new construction. The most economical model predicts neutrino mass ratios, lepton mixing angles, Dirac and Majorana phases uniquely in terms of the modulus vacuum expectation value, with all the parameters except one within the experimentally allowed range. As a byproduct of the general formalism we extend the notion of non-linearly realised symmetries to the discrete case.

Focusing on popular scenarios where the explanation of these anomalies requires New Physics at the TeV scale, we emphasise the importance of including electroweak corrections to obtain trustable predictions for the models in question. We find that the most important quantum effects are the modifications of the leptonic couplings of the W and Z vector bosons and the generation of a purely leptonic effective Lagrangian. As a result, the tight experimental bounds on Z-pole observables and tau decays challenge an explanation of the current non-standard data. We illustrate how these effects arise, by providing a detailed discussion of the running and matching procedure which is necessary to derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian.

Lepton flavour universality (LFU) in B-decays is revisited by considering a class of semileptonic operators defined at a scale Lambda above the electroweak scale v. The importance of quantum effects, so far neglected in the literature, is emphasised. We construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian taking into account the running effects from Lambda down to v through the one-loop renormalization group equations (RGE) in the limit of exact electroweak symmetry and QED RGEs from v down to the 1 GeV scale. The most important quantum effects turn out to be the modification of the leptonic couplings of the vector boson Z and the generation of a purely leptonic effective Lagrangian. Large LFU breaking effects in Z and tau decays and visible lepton flavour violating (LFV) effects in the processes tau -> mu ll, tau -> mu rho, tau -> mu pi and tau -> mu eta^(') are induced.

We discuss in detail the constraints on partial compositeness coming from flavour and CP violation in the leptonic sector. In a first part we present a formulation of partial compositeness in terms of a flavour symmetry group and a set of spurions, whose background values specify the symmetry breaking pattern. In such a framework we construct the complete set of dimension-six operators describing lepton flavour violation and CP violation. By exploiting the existing bounds, we derive limits on the compositeness scale in different scenarios, characterised by increasing restrictions on the spurion properties. We confirm that in the most general case the compositeness scale should lie well-above 10 TeV. However, if in the composite sector mass parameters and Yukawa couplings are universal, such a bound can be significantly lowered, without necessarily reproducing the case of minimal flavour violation. The most sensitive processes are decays of charged leptons either of radiative type or into three charged leptons, muon to electron conversion in nuclei and the electric dipole moment of the electron. In a second part we explicitly compute the Wilson coefficients of the relevant dimension-six operators in the so-called two-site model, embodying the symmetry breaking pattern discussed in our first part, and we compare the results with those of the general spurion analysis.

We provide a unified description of fermion masses and mixing angles in the framework of a supersymmetric grand unified SO(10) model with anarchic Yukawa couplings of order unity. The space-time is five dimensional and the extra flat spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold $S^1/(Z_2 \times Z_2')$, leading to Pati-Salam gauge symmetry on the boundary where Yukawa interactions are localised. The gauge symmetry breaking is completed by means of a rather economic scalar sector, avoiding the doublet-triplet splitting problem. The matter fields live in the bulk and their massless modes get exponential profiles, which naturally explain the mass hierarchy of the different fermion generations. Quarks and leptons properties are naturally reproduced by a mechanism, first proposed by Kitano and Li, that lifts the SO(10) degeneracy of bulk masses in terms of a single parameter. The model provides a realistic pattern of fermion masses and mixing angles for large values of $\tanβ$. It favours normally ordered neutrino mass spectrum with the lightest neutrino mass below 0.01 eV and no preference for leptonic CP violating phases. The right handed neutrino mass spectrum is very hierarchical and does not allow for thermal leptogenesis. We analyse several variants of the basic framework and find that the results concerning the fermion spectrum are remarkably stable.

We update a five-dimensional SO(10) grand unified model of fermion masses and mixing angles originally proposed by Kitano and Li. In our setup Yukawa couplings are anarchical and quark and lepton sectors are diversified by the profiles of the fermion zero modes in the extra dimension. The breaking of SO(10) down to SU(5) \times U(1)_X provides the key parameter that distinguishes the profiles of the different SU(5) components inside the same 16 representation. With respect to the original version of the model, we extend the Higgs sector to explicitly solve the doublet-triplet splitting problem through the missing partner mechanism and we perform a fit to an idealized set of data. By scanning the Yukawa couplings of the model we find that, for large tanβ, both normal and inverted ordered neutrino spectrum can be accommodated. However, while the case of inverted order requires a severe fine tuning of the Yukawa parameters, the normal ordering is compatible with an anarchical distribution of Yukawa couplings. Thus, in a natural portion of the parameter space, the model predicts a normal ordered neutrino spectrum, the lightest neutrino mass below 5 meV, and |m_{ββ}| in the range 0.1-5 meV. No particular preference is found for the Dirac CP phase in the lepton sector while the right-handed neutrino masses are too small to explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe through thermal leptogenesis.

We present a supersymmetric model with the flavour symmetry S4 x Z3 and a CP symmetry which are broken to a Z3 subgroup of the flavour symmetry in the charged lepton sector and to Z2 x CP (x Z3) in the neutrino one at leading order. This model implements an approach, capable of predicting lepton mixing angles and Dirac as well as Majorana phases in terms of one free parameter. This parameter, directly related to the size of the reactor mixing angle theta_{13}, can be naturally of the correct order in our model. Atmospheric mixing is maximal, while sin^2 theta_{12} is larger than 1/3. All three phases are predicted: the Dirac phase is maximal, whereas the two Majorana phases are trivial. The neutrino mass matrix contains only three real parameters at leading order and neutrino masses effectively only depend on two of them. As a consequence, they have to be normally ordered and the absolute neutrino mass scale and the sum of the neutrino masses are predicted. The vacuum of the flavons can be correctly aligned. We study subleading corrections to the leading order results and show that they are small.

We derive conditions for consistently defining such a setup. We show that in general lepton mixing angles and CP phases (Dirac as well as Majorana) only depend on one single parameter theta which can take values between 0 and pi, if the residual symmetries are G_e contained in G_f in the charged lepton and G_nu=Z_2 x CP in the neutrino sector. We perform a comprehensive study for G_f=S_4 and find five cases which are phenomenologically interesting. They naturally lead to a non-zero reactor mixing angle and all mixing parameters are strongly correlated. Some of the patterns predict maximal atmospheric mixing and maximal Dirac phase, while others predict trivial Dirac and Majorana phases.

The recent results that $θ_{13}$ is relatively large, of the order of the previous upper bound, and the indications of a sizable deviation of $θ_{23}$ from the maximal value are in agreement with the predictions of Anarchy in the lepton sector. The quark and charged lepton hierarchies can then be reproduced in a SU(5) GUT context by attributing non-vanishing $U(1)_{FN}$ charges, different for each family, only to the SU(5) tenplet states. The fact that the observed mass hierarchies are stronger for up quarks than for down quarks and charged leptons supports this idea. As discussed in the past, in the flexible context of $SU(5)\otimes U(1)_{FN}$, different patterns of charges can be adopted going from Anarchy to various types of hierarchy. We revisit this approach by also considering new models and we compare all versions to the present data. As a result we confirm that, by relaxing the extreme ansatz of equal $U(1)_{FN}$ charges for all SU(5) pentaplets and singlets, better agreement with the data than for Anarchy is obtained without increasing the model complexity. We also present the distributions obtained in the different models for the Dirac CP-violating phase. Finally we discuss the relative merits of these simple models.

After summarizing the motivation and the formalism, we discuss specific models, mainly those based on A4 but also on other finite groups, and their phenomenological implications, including the extension to quarks. The recent measurements of θ_13 favour versions of these models where a suitable mechanism leads to corrections to θ_13 that can naturally be larger than those to θ_12 and θ_23. The virtues and the problems of TB mixing models are discussed, also in connection with lepton flavour violating processes, and the different approaches are compared.

We compare the performances of the different classes of models in this respect. We then consider, in a supersymmetric framework, the important implications of these flavour symmetries on lepton flavour violating processes, like μ-> e gamma and similar processes. We discuss how the existing limits constrain these models, once their parameters are adjusted so as to optimize the agreement with the measured values of the mixing angles. In the simplified CMSSM context, adopted here just for indicative purposes, the small tan(beta) range and heavy SUSY mass scales are favoured by lepton flavour violating processes, which makes it even more difficult to reproduce the reported muon g-2 discrepancy.

We assume that left-handed leptons transform as triplets under a group G_f which is broken in such a way that neutrino and charged lepton sectors remain invariant under the subgroups G_nu and G_e of G_f, respectively. In this limit mixing angles and the Dirac CP violating phase delta_CP are determined. By choosing G_f=Delta(6 n^2) (n=4,8), G_nu=Z_2 x Z_2 and G_e=Z_3 we find sin^2 theta_13=0.045(0.011) for n=4(8). At the same time theta_23 and theta_12 remain close to their experimental best fit values, particularly in the case n=8, where sin^2 theta_23 = 0.424 and sin^2 theta_12 = 0.337. delta_CP is predicted to be 0 or pi so that CP is conserved in our examples.

The model is based on the flavour symmetry A5 \times Z5 \times Z3, spontaneously broken by a set of flavon fields. By minimizing the scalar potential of the theory up to the next-to-leading order in the symmetry breaking parameter, we demonstrate that this mixing pattern is naturally achieved in a finite portion of the parameter space, through the vacuum alignment of the flavon fields. The leading order approximation is stable against higher-order corrections. We also compare our construction to other models based on discrete symmetry groups.

We analyze the most general dimension six effective Lagrangian, invariant under the flavour symmetry A4 x Z3 x U(1) proposed to reproduce the near tri-bimaximal lepton mixing observed in neutrino oscillations. The effective Lagrangian includes four-lepton operators that violate the individual lepton numbers in the limit of exact flavor symmetry and allow unsuppressed processes satisfying the rule |Delta L_e x Delta L_mu x Delta L_tau| = 2. The most stringent bounds on the strength of the new interactions come from the observed universality of leptonic muon and tau decays, from the agreement between the Fermi constant measured in the muon decay and that extracted from the mW/mZ ratio, and from the limits on the rare decays tau^- -> mu^+ e^- e^- and tau^- -> e^+ mu^- mu^-. We also investigate these effects in a specific supersymmetric (SUSY) realization of the flavour symmetry and we find large suppression factors for all the processes allowed by the selection rule. We explain why this rule is violated in the SUSY context and we provide a complete picture of lepton flavour violation in the SUSY version of A4 x Z_3 x U(1).

We compute the branching ratios for mu-> e gamma, tau-> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma in a supersymmetric model invariant under the flavour symmetry group A4 X Z3 X U(1)_{FN}, in which near tri-bimaximal lepton mixing is naturally predicted. At leading order in the small symmetry breaking parameter u, which is of the same order as the reactor mixing angle theta_{13}, we find that the branching ratios generically scale as u^2. Applying the current bound on the branching ratio of mu -> e gamma shows that small values of u or tan(beta) are preferred in the model for mass parameters m_{SUSY} and m_{1/2} smaller than 1000 GeV. The bound expected from the on-going MEG experiment will provide a severe constraint on the parameter space of the model either enforcing u approx 0.01 and small tan(beta) or m_{SUSY} and m_{1/2} above 1000 GeV. In the special case of universal soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the flavon sector a cancellation takes place in the amplitudes and the branching ratios scale as u^4, allowing for smaller slepton masses. The branching ratios for tau -> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma are predicted to be of the same order as the one for mu -> e gamma, which precludes the possibility of observing these tau decays in the near future.

In this note we discuss the vacuum alignment in supersymmetric models with spontaneously broken flavour symmetries in the presence of soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking terms. We show that the inclusion of soft SUSY breaking terms can give rise to non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs) for the auxiliary components of the flavon fields. These non-zero VEVs can have an important impact on the phenomenology of this class of models, since they can induce an additional flavour violating contribution to the sfermion soft mass matrix of right-left (RL) type. We carry out an explicit computation in a class of SUSY A4 models predicting tri-bimaximal mixing in the lepton sector. The flavour symmetry breaking sector is described in terms of flavon and driving supermultiplets. We find non-vanishing VEVs for the auxiliary components of the flavon fields and for the scalar components of the driving fields which are of order m_{SUSY} x <phi> and m_{SUSY}, respectively. Thereby, m_{SUSY} is the generic soft SUSY breaking scale which is expected to be around 1 TeV and <phi> is the VEV of scalar components of the flavon fields. Another effect of these VEVs can be the generation of a mu term.

We study the interplay between flavor symmetries and leptogenesis in the case when the scale of flavor symmetry breaking is higher than the scale at which lepton number is violated. We show that when the heavy Majorana neutrinos belong to an irreducible representation of the flavor group, all the leptogenesis CP asymmetries vanish in the limit of exact symmetry. In the case of reducible representations we identify a general condition that, if satisfied, guarantees the same result. We then focus on the case of a model in which an $A_4$ flavor symmetry yields a drastic reduction in the number of free parameters, implying that at leading order several quantities are only a function of the lightest neutrino mass $m_l$, which in turn is strongly constrained. For normal ordering (NO) we find m_l\simeq (0.0044 ÷0.0056) eV while for inverted ordering (IO) m_l\gtrsim 0.017 eV. For the 0\nu2βdecay parameter this yields |m_{ee}|\simeq (0.006÷0.007) eV (NO) and |m_{ee}|\gsim 0.017 eV (IO). We show that the leptogenesis CP asymmetries only depend on m_l, on a single non-hierarchical Yukawa coupling y, and on two parameters that quantify the flavor symmetry breaking effects, and we argue that the unflavored regime for leptogenesis is strongly preferred in our model, thus realizing a rather predictive scenario. Performing a calculation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry we find that for NO the observed value is easily reproduced for natural values of the symmetry breaking parameters. For IO successful leptogenesis is possible for a limited choice of the parameters implying rather large reheating temperatures T_reh\gtrsim 5*10^13 GeV.

The model is supersymmetric in 4-dimensions and the complete flavour group is S4 x Z4 x U(1)_FN, which also allows to reproduce the hierarchy of the charged lepton spectrum. The only fine tuning needed in the model is to reproduce the small observed value of r, the ratio between the neutrino mass squared differences. Once the relevant parameters are set to accommodate r then the spectrum of light neutrinos shows a moderate normal hierarchy and is compatible, within large ambiguities, with the constraints from leptogenesis as an explanation of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe.

We construct the relevant low-energy effective Lagrangian where these effects are dominated by dimension six operators, suppressed by the scale M of new physics. All the flavour breaking effects are universally described by the vacuum expectation values <Phi> of a set of spurions. We separately analyze both a supersymmetric and a general case. While the observed discrepancy delta a_mu in the anomalous MDM of the muon suggests M of order of a few TeV, several data require M above 10 TeV, in particular the limit on EDM of the electron. In the general case also the present limit on BR(mu -> e gamma) requires M >10 TeV, at least. The branching ratios for mu -> e gamma, tau -> mu gamma and tau -> e gamma are all expected to be of the same order. In the supersymmetric case the constraint from mu -> e gamma is softened and it can be satisfied by a smaller scale M. In this case both the observed delta a_mu and the current bound on BR(mu -> e gamma) can be satisfied, at the price of a rather small value for |<Phi>|, of the order of a few percents, that reflects on a similar value for theta_{13}.

In the charged lepton sector the ν_μ-ν_τparity is maximally broken and the resulting mass matrix is nearly diagonal. The charged lepton mass hierarchy is automatically reproduced by the S3 symmetry breaking parameter alone. A careful analysis shows that, after the inclusion of all relevant subleading effects, the model predicts θ_{23}=π/4+O(λ_c^2) and θ_{13}=O(λ_c^2), λ_c denoting the Cabibbo angle. A simple extension to the quark sector is also illustrated, where the mass spectrum and the mixing angles are naturally reproduced, with the exception of the mixing angle between the first two generations, that requires a small accidental enhancement.

We build a supersymmetric model of quark and lepton masses based on the discrete flavour symmetry group T', the double covering of A_4. In the lepton sector our model is practically indistinguishable from recent models based on A_4 and, in particular, it predicts a nearly tri-bimaximal mixing, in good agreement with present data. In the quark sector a realistic pattern of masses and mixing angles is obtained by exploiting the doublet representations of T', not available in A_4. To this purpose, the flavour symmetry T' should be broken spontaneously along appropriate directions in flavour space. In this paper we fully discuss the related vacuum alignment problem, both at the leading order and by accounting for small effects coming from higher-order corrections. As a result we get the relations: \sqrt{m_d/m_s}\approx |V_{us}| and \sqrt{m_d/m_s}\approx |V_{td}/V_{ts}|.

This particular orbifolding has four fixed points where 4 dimensional branes are located and the tetrahedral symmetry of A4 connects these branes. In this approach A4 appears after the reduction from six to four dimensions as a remnant of the 6D space-time symmetry. A previously discussed supersymmetric version of A4 is reinterpreted along these lines.

Abstract:
We propose a minimal SO(10) model in 5 space-time dimensions. The single extra spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') reducing the gauge group to that of Pati-Salam. The breaking down to the standard model group is obtained through an ordinary Higgs mechanism taking place at the Pati-Salam brane, giving rise to a proper gauge coupling unification. We achieve a correct description of fermion masses and mixing angles by describing first and second generations as bulk fields, and by embedding the third generation into four multiplets located at the Pati-Salam brane. The Yukawa sector is simple and compact and predicts a neutrino spectrum of normal hierarchy type. Concerning proton decay, dimension five operators are absent and the essentially unique localization of matter multiplets implies that the minimal couplings between the super-heavy gauge bosons and matter fields are vanishing. Non-minimal interactions are allowed but the resulting dimension six operators describing proton decay are too suppressed to produce observable effects, even in future, super-massive detectors.

We formulate and discuss a 4-dimensional SUSY version of an A4 model for tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing which is completely natural. We also study the next-to-the-leading corrections and show that they are small, once the ratios of A4 breaking VEVs to the cutoff are fixed in a specified interval. We also point out an interesting way of presenting the A4 group starting from the modular group. In this approach, which could be interesting in itself as an indication on a possible origin of A4, the lagrangian basis where the symmetry is formulated coincides with the basis where the charged leptons are diagonal. If the same classification structure in A4 is extended from leptons to quarks, the CKM matrix coincides with the unit matrix in leading order and a study of non leading corrections shows that the departures from unity of the CKM matrix are far too small to accomodate the observed mixing angles.
