Given $k\in N$, a nonnegative function $f\in C^r[a,b]$, $r\ge 0$, an arbitrary finite collection of points
$\big\{α_i\big\}_{i\in J} \subset [a,b]$, and a corresponding collection of nonnegative integers
$\big\{m_i\big\}_{i\in J}$ with $0\le m_i \le r$, $i\in J$, is it true that, for sufficiently large $n\in N$,
there exists a polynomial $P_n$ of degree $n$ such that
(i) $|f(x)-P_n(x)| \le c ρ_n^r(x) ω_k(f^{(r)}, ρ_n(x); [a,b])$, $x\in [a,b]$, where $ρ_n (x):= n^{-1} \sqrt{1-x^2} +n^{-2}$ and $ω_k$ is the classical $k$-th modulus of smoothness,
(ii) $P^{(ν)}(α_i)=f^{(ν)}(α_i)$, for all $0\le ν\le m_i$ and all $i\in J$,
and
(iii) either $P \ge f$ on $[a,b]$ (\emph{onesided} approximation), or $P \ge 0$ on $[a,b]$ (\emph{positive} approximation)?
We provide {\em precise answers} not only to this question, but also to similar questions for more general {\em intertwining} and {\em copositive} polynomial approximation. It turns out that many of these answers are quite unexpected.
We also show that, in general, similar questions for $q$-monotone approximation with $q\ge 1$ have negative answers, i.e., $q$-monotone approximation with general interpolatory constraints is impossible if $q\ge 1$.

Degree of nearly comonotone approximation of periodic functions

Abstract:
Let a $2π$-periodic function $f\in\Bbb C$ changes its monotonicity at a finitely even number of points $y_i$ of the period. The degree of approximation of this $f$ by trigonometric polynomials which are comonotone with it, i.e. that change their monotonicity exactly at the points $y_i$ where $f$ does, is restricted by $ω_2(f,π/n)$ (with a constant depending on the location of these $y_i$). Recently, we proved that relaxing the comonotonicity requirement in intervals of length proportional to $π/n$ about the points $y_i$ (so called nearly comonotone approximation) allows the polynomials to achieve the approximation rate of $ω_3$. By constructing a counterexample, we show here that even with the relaxation of the requirement of comonotonicity for the polynomials on sets with measures approaching $0$ (no matter how slowly or how fast) $ω_4$ is not reachable.

The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $λ$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for $π^0$ photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb, have been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel calorimeter. The ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width was extracted by fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is $Γ{(π^0 \to γγ)} = 7.82 \pm 0.14 ~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.17 ~({\rm syst.}) ~{\rm eV}$. With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is consistent with current theoretical predictions.

Novel detector schemes are proposed for the short-baseline neutrino experiments of next generation, aimed at exploring the large-$Δm^2$ domain of \omutau oscillations in the appearance mode. These schemes emphasize good spectrometry for charged particles and for electromagnetic showers and efficient reconstruction of \ypi_gg decays. The basic elements are a sequence of relatively thin emulsion targets, immersed in magnetic field and interspersed with electronic trackers, and a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter built of lead glass. These elements act as an integral whole in reconstructing the electromagnetic showers. This conceptual scheme shows good performance in identifying the $τ$ (quasi-)two-body decays by their characteristic kinematics and in selecting the electronic decays of the $τ$.
