In this paper we revisit the notion of grouped dispersal that have been introduced by Soubeyrand and co-authors \cite{soubeyrand2011patchy} to model the simultaneous (and hence dependent) dispersal of several propagules from a single source in a homogeneous environment. We built a time continuous measure valued process that takes into account the main feature of a grouped dispersal and derive its infinitesimal generator. To cope with the mutligeneration aspect associated to the demography we introduce two types of propagules in the description of the population which is one of the main innovations here. We also provide a rigorous description of the process and its generator. We derive as well, some large population asymptotics of the process unveilling the degenerate ultra parabolic system of PDE satisfied by the density of population. Finally, we also show that such a PDE system has a non-trivial solution which is unique in a certain functional space.

This paper focuses on propagation phenomena in reaction-diffusion equations with a weaklymonostable nonlinearity. The reaction term can be seen as an intermediate between the classicallogistic one (or Fisher-KPP) and the standard weak Allee effect one. We investigate the effect ofthe decay rate of the initial data on the propagation rate. When the right tail of the initial datais sub-exponential, finite speed propagation and acceleration may happen and we derive the exactseparation between the two situations. When the initial data is sub-exponentially unbounded, accel-eration unconditionally occurs. Estimates for the locations of the level sets are expressed in termsof the decay of the initial data. In addition, sharp exponents of acceleration for initial data withsub-exponential and algebraic tails are given. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate theabove findings.

In this work we propose a measure-valued stochastic process representing the dynamics of a virus population, structured by phenotypic traits and geographical space, and where viruses are transported between spatial locations by mechanical vectors. As a first example of the use of this model, we show how to use this model to infer results on the probability of extinction of the virus population. Later, by combining various scalings on population sizes, speed of diffusion of vectors, and other relevant model parameters, we show the emergence of two systems of integro-differential equations as Macroscopic descriptions of the system. Under the existence of densities at time zero, we also show the propagation of this property for later times, and derive the strong formulation of the limiting systems of IDEs. These strong formulations, in a sense, correspond to spatial Lotka-Volterra competition models with mutation and vector-borne dispersal.

Seismic networks provide data that are used as basis both for public safety decisions and for scientific research. Their configuration affects the data completeness, which in turn, critically affects several seismological scientific targets (e.g., earthquake prediction, seismic hazard...). In this context, a key aspect is how to map earthquakes density in seismogenic areas from censored data or even in areas that are not covered by the network. We propose to predict the spatial distribution of earthquakes from the knowledge of presence locations and geological relationships, taking into account any interaction between records. Namely, in a more general setting, we aim to estimate the intensity function of a point process, conditional to its censored realization, as in geostatistics for continuous processes. We define a predictor as the best linear unbiased combination of the observed point pattern. We show that the weight function associated to the predictor is the solution of a Fredholm equation of second kind. Both the kernel and the source term of the Fredholm equation are related to the first-and second-order characteristics of the point process through the intensity and the pair correlation function. Results are presented and illustrated on simulated non-stationary point processes and real data for mapping Greek Hellenic seismicity in a region with unreliable and incomplete records.

In this paper, we consider a resource-consumer model taking into account a mutation effect between species (with constant mutation rate). The corresponding mutation operator is a discretization of the Laplacian in such a way that the resulting dynamical system can be viewed as a regular perturbation of the classical chemostat system. We prove the existence of a unique locally stable steady-state for every value of the mutation rate and every value of the dilution rate not exceeding a critical value. In addition, we give an expansion of the steady-state in terms of the mutation rate and we prove a uniform persistence property of the dynamics related to each species. Finally, we show that this equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable for every value of the mutation rate provided that the dilution rate is with small enough values.

We study an acceleration phenomenon arising in monostable integro-differential equations with a weak Allee effect. Previous works have shown its occurrence and have given correct upper bounds on the rate of expansion in some particular cases, but precise lower bounds were still missing. In this paper, we provide a sharp lower bound for this acceleration rate, valid for a large class of dispersion operators. Our results manage to cover fractional Laplace operators and standard convolutions in a unified way, which is new in the literature. A first very important result of the paper is a general flattening estimate of independent interest: this phenomenon appears regularly in acceleration situations, but getting quantitative estimates is most of the time open. This estimate at hand, we construct a very subtle sub-solution that captures the expected dynamics of the accelerating solution (rates of expansion and flattening) and identifies several various regimes that appear in the dynamics depending on the parameters of the problem.

The ecological niche of the population is assumed to be bounded (i.e. outside a compact set, the environment is assumed to be lethal for the population) and shifted through time at a constant speed c. For compactly supported dispersal kernels J, assuming that for c = 0 the population survive, we prove that there exists a critical speeds c * ,$\pm$ and c * * ,$\pm$ such that for all --c * ,-- < c < c * ,+ then the population will survive and will perish when c $\ge$ c * * ,+ or c $\le$ --c * * ,--. To derive this results we first obtain an optimal persistence criteria depending of the speed c for non local problem with a drift term. Namely, we prove that for a positive speed c the population persists if and only if the generalized principal eigenvalue $λ$ p of the linear problem cD x [$Φ$] + J $\star$ $Φ$ -- $Φ$ + $\partial$ s f (x, 0)$Φ$ + $λ$ p $Φ$ = 0 in R, is negative. $λ$ p is a spectral quantity that we defined in the spirit of the generalized first eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. The speeds c * ,$\pm$ and c * * ,pm are then obtained through a fine analysis of the properties of $λ$ p with respect to c. In particular, we establish its continuity with respect to the speed c. In addition, for any continuous bounded non-negative initial data, we establish the long time behaviour of the solution U (t, x).

We consider a nonlocal semi-linear parabolic equation on a connected exterior domain of the form $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus K$, where $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a compact "obstacle". The model we study is motivated by applications in biology and takes into account long range dispersal events that may be anisotropic depending on how a given population perceives the environment. To formulate this in a meaningful manner, we introduce a new theoretical framework which is of both mathematical and biological interest. The main goal of this paper is to construct an entire solution that behaves like a planar travelling wave as $t\to-\infty$ and to study how this solution propagates depending on the shape of the obstacle. We show that whether the solution recovers the shape of a planar front in the large time limit is equivalent to whether a certain Liouville type property is satisfied. We study the validity of this Liouville type property and we extend some previous results of Hamel, Valdinoci and the authors. Lastly, we show that the entire solution is a generalised transition front.

In this paper, we are interested in the properties of solution of the nonlocal equation $$\begin{cases}u_t+(-Δ)^su=f(u),\quad t>0, \ x\in\mathbb{R}\\ u(0,x)=u_0(x),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}\end{cases}$$ where $0\le u_0<1$ is a Heaviside type function, $Δ^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian with $s\in (0,1)$, and $f\in C([0,1],\mathbb{R}^+)$ is a non negative nonlinearity such that $f(0)=f(1)=0$ and $f'(1)<0$. In this context, it is known that the solution $u(t,s)$ converges locally uniformly to 1 and our aim here is to understand how fast this invasion process occur. When $f$ is a Fisher-KPP type nonlinearity and $s \in (0,1)$, it is known that the level set of the solution $u(t,x)$ moves at an exponential speed whereas when $f$ is of ignition type and $s\in \left(\frac{1}{2},1\right)$ then the level set of the solution moves at a constant speed. In this article, for general monostable nonlinearities $f$ and any $s\in (0,1)$ we derive generic estimates on the position of the level sets of the solution $u(t,x)$ which then enable us to describe more precisely the behaviour of this invasion process. In particular, we obtain a algebraic generic upper bound on the "speed" of level set highlighting the delicate interplay of $s$ and $f$ in the existence of an exponential acceleration process. When $s\in\left (0,\frac{1}{2}\right]$ and $f$ is of ignition type, we also complete the known description of the behaviour of $u$ and give a precise asymptotic of the speed of the level set in this context. Notably, we prove that the level sets accelerate when $s\in\left(0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$ and that in the critical case $s=\frac{1}{2}$ although no travelling front can exist, the level sets still move asymptotically at a constant speed. These new results are in sharp contrast with the bistable situation where no such acceleration may occur, highlighting therefore the qualitative difference between the two type of nonlinearities.

Increasing rates of global trade and travel, as well as changing climatic patterns, have led to more frequent outbreaks of plant disease epidemics worldwide. Mathematical modelling is a key tool in predicting where and how these new threats will spread, as well as in assessing how damaging they might be. Models can also be used to inform disease management, providing a rational methodology for comparing the performance of possible control strategies against one another. For emerging epidemics, in which new pathogens or pathogen strains are actively spreading into new regions, the spatial component of spread becomes particularly important, both to make predictions and to optimise disease control. In this chapter we illustrate how the spatial spread of emerging plant diseases can be modelled at the landscape scale via spatially explicit compartmental models. Our particular focus is on the crucial role of the dispersal kernel-which parameterises the probability of pathogen spread from an infected host to susceptible hosts at any given distance-in determining outcomes of epidemics. We add disease management to our model by testing performance of a simple ''one off'' form of reactive disease control, in which sites within a particular distance of locations detected to contain infection are removed in a single round of disease management. We use this simplified model to show how ostensibly arcane decisions made by the modeller-most notably whether or not the underpinning disease model allows for stochasticity (i.e. randomness)-can greatly impact on disease management recommendations. Our chapter is accompanied by example code in the programming language R available via an online repository, allowing the reader to run the models we present for him/herself.

Such a spectral problem naturally arises in the study of nonlocal population dynamics models defined in a space-time varying environment encoding the influence of a climate change through a spatial shift of the coefficient. In such models, working directly in a moving frame that matches the spatial shift leads to consider a problem where the dispersal of the population is modeled by a nonlocal operator with a drift term. Assuming that the drift q is a positive function, for rather general assumptions on J and a, we prove the existence of a principal eigenpair ($λ$ p , $Φ$ p) and derive some of its main properties. In particular, we prove that $λ$ p ($Ω$) = lim R$\rightarrow$+$\infty$ $λ$ p ($Ω$ R), where $Ω$ R = $Ω$ $\cap$ (--R, R) and $λ$ p ($Ω$ R) corresponds to the principal eigenvalue of the truncation operator defined in $Ω$ R. The proofs especially rely on the derivation of a new Harnack type inequality for positive solutions of such problems.

We consider the homogeneous integro-differential equation$\partial \_t u=J*u-u+f(u)$ with a monostable nonlinearity $f$. Our interest is twofold: we investigate the existence/non existence of travelling waves, and the propagation properties of the Cauchy problem. When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponentially bounded, travelling waves are known to exist and solutions of the Cauchy problem typically propagate at a constant speed \cite{Schumacher1980}, \cite{Weinberger1982}, \cite{Carr2004}, \cite{Coville2007a}, \cite{Coville2008a}, \cite{Yagisita2009}. %When the dispersion kernel $J$ is exponentially bounded, travelling waves are known to exist when $f$ belongs to one of the three main class of non-linearities (bistable, ignition or monostable), and solutions of the Cauchy problem typically propagate at a constant speed \cite{Schumacher1980}, \cite{Wei-82},\cite{Bates1997},\cite{Chen1997}, \cite{Carr2004}, \cite{Coville2007a}, \cite{Coville2008a}, \cite{Yagisita2009,Yagisita2009a}. On the other hand, when the dispersion kernel $J$ has heavy tails and the non-linearity $f$ is non degenerate, i.e $f'(0)\textgreater{}0$, travelling waves do not exist and solutions of the Cauchy problem propagate by accelerating \cite{Medlock2003}, \cite{Yagisita2009}, \cite{Garnier2011}. For a general monostable non-linearity, a dichotomy between these two types of propagation behaviour is still not known. The originality of our work is to provide such dichotomy by studying the interplay between the tails of the dispersion kernel and the Allee effect induced by the degeneracy of $f$, i.e. $f'(0)=0$. First, for algebraic decaying kernels, we prove the exact separation between existence and non existence of travelling waves. This in turn provides the exact separation between non acceleration and acceleration in the Cauchy problem. In the latter case, we provide a first estimate of the position of the level sets of the solution.

We focus our analysis on the properties of the generalised principal eigenvalue $λ\_p(\mathcal{L}\_Ω+a)$ defined by $$λ\_p(\mathcal{L}\_Ω+a):= \sup\{λ\in \mathbb{R} \,|\, \exists \varphi \in C(\bar Ω), \varphi\textgreater{}0, \textit{such that}\, \mathcal{L}\_Ω[\varphi] +a\varphi +λ\varphi \le 0 \, \text{in}\;Ω\}. $$ We establish some new properties of this generalised principal eigenvalue $λ\_p$. Namely, we prove the equivalence of different definitions of the principal eigenvalue. We also study the behaviour of $λ\_p(\mathcal{L}\_Ω+a)$ with respect to some scaling of $K$. For kernels $K$ of the type, $K(x,y)=J(x-y)$ with $J$ a compactly supported probability density, we also establish some asymptotic properties of $λ\_{p} \left(\mathcal{L}\_{σ,m,Ω} -\frac{1}{σ^m}+a\right)$ where $\mathcal{L}\_{σ,m,Ω}$ is defined by $\displaystyle{\mathcal{L}\_{σ,m,Ω}[\varphi]:=\frac{1}{σ^{2+N}}\int\_ΩJ\left(\frac{x-y}σ\right)\varphi(y)\, dy}$. In particular, we prove that $$\lim\_{σ\to 0}λ\_p\left(\mathcal{L}\_{σ,2,Ω}-\frac{1}{σ^{2}}+a\right)=λ\_1\left(\frac{D\_2(J)}{2N}Δ+a\right),$$where $D\_2(J):=\int\_{\mathbb{R}^N}J(z)|z|^2\,dz$ and $λ\_1$ denotes the Dirichlet principal eigenvalue of the elliptic operator. In addition, we obtain some convergence results for the corresponding eigenfunction $\varphi\_{p,σ}$.

Such a problem is used in population dynamics models to capture the evolution of a clonal population structured with respect to a phenotypic trait. In this context, the function u represents the density of individuals characterized by the trait, the domain of trait values $Ω$ is a bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^N$ , the kernels $k$ and $m$ respectively account for the competition between individuals and the mutations occurring in every generation, and the function a represents a growth rate. When the competition is independent of the trait, we construct a positive stationary solution which belongs to the space of Radon measures on $Ω$. Moreover, when this '' stationary '' measure is regular and bounded, we prove its uniqueness and show that, for any non negative initial datum in $L^{\infty} (Ω) \cap L^1 (Ω)$, the solution of the Cauchy problem converges to this limit measure in $L^2 (Ω)$. We also construct an example for which the measure is singular and non-unique, and investigate numerically the long time behaviour of the solution in such a situation. These numerical simulations seem to reveal some dependence of the limit measure with respect to the initial datum.

In this article, we analyse the non-local model : $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=J\star u -u + f(x,u) \quad \text{ with }\quad x \in \R^N, $$ where $J$ is a positive continuous dispersal kernel and $f(x,u)$ is a heterogeneous KPP type non-linearity describing the growth rate of the population. The ecological niche of the population is assumed to be bounded (i.e. outside a compact set, the environment is assumed to be lethal for the population). For compactly supported dispersal kernels $J$, we derive an optimal persistence criteria. We prove that a positive stationary solution exists if and only if the generalised principal eigenvalue $λ_p$ of the linear problem $$ J\star \varphi(x) -\varphi(x) + \partial_sf(x,0)\varphi(x)+λ_p\varphi(x)=0 \quad \text{ in }\quad \R^N,$$ is negative. $λ_p$ is a spectral quantity that we defined in the spirit of the generalised first eigenvalue of an elliptic operator. In addition, for any continuous non-negative initial data that is bounded or integrable, we establish the long time behaviour of the solution $u(t,x)$. We also analyse the impact of the size of the support of the dispersal kernel on the persistence criteria. We exhibit situations where the dispersal strategy has "no impact" on the persistence of the species and other ones where the slowest dispersal strategy is not any more an "Ecological Stable Strategy". We also discuss persistence criteria for fat-tailed kernels.

In a blind competition situation, i.e $K(x,y)=k(y)$, we show the existence of a unique positive steady state which is positively globally stable. That is, the positive steady state attracts all the possible trajectories initiated from any non negative initial datum. When $K$ is a general positive kernel, we also present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a positive steady states. We prove also some stability result on the dynamic of the equation when the competition kernel $K$ is of the form $K(x,y)=k_0(y)+\eps k_1(x,y)$. That is, we prove that for sufficiently small $\eps$ there exists a unique steady state, which in addition is positively asymptotically stable. The proofs of the global stability of the steady state essentially rely on non-linear relative entropy identities and an orthogonal decomposition. These identities combined with the decomposition provide us some a priori estimates and differential inequalities essential to characterise the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions.

Such type of equation appears in some studies of population dynamics where the above solutions are the stationary states of the dynamic of a spatially structured population evolving in a heterogeneous partially controlled landscape and submitted to a long range dispersal. Under some fairly general assumptions on $K,a_i$ and $β$ we first establish a necessary and sufficient criterium for the existence of a unique positive solution. Then we analyse the structure of the set of positive solution $(λ,u_λ)$ with respect to the presence or absence of a refuge zone (i.e $ω$ so that $β_{|ω}\equiv 0$).

For regular domains, we also derive an inequality up to the boundary. The main difficulty in such context lies in a precise control of the solutions outside a compact set and the existence of local uniform estimates. We overcome this problem by proving a contraction result which makes the $L^1$ norms of the solutions on two compact sets $ø_1\subset\subsetø_2$ equivalent. We also construct the principal positive eigenfunctions associated to particular nonlocal operators by using the corresponding Harnack type inequalities.

Our main motivation comes from the analysis of the Lotka-Volterra's competition system with mutation which simulates the demo-genetic dynamics of diverse virus in their host : $$ \frac{dv_{i}(t)}{dt}=v_i\[r_i-\frac{1}{K}Ψ_i(v)\]+\sum_{j=1}^{N} μ_{ij}(v_j-v_i). $$ In a first part we analyse the case where the competition terms $Ψ_i$ are independent of the virus type $i$. In this situation and under some rather general assumptions on the functions $Ψ_i$, the coefficients $r_i$ and the mutation matrix $μ_{ij}$ we prove the existence of a unique positive globally stable stationary solution i.e. the solution attracts the trajectory initiated from any nonnegative initial datum. Moreover the unique steady state $\bar v$ is strictly positive in the sense that $\bar v_i>0$ for all $i$. These results are in sharp contrast with the behaviour of Lotka-Volterra without mutation term where it is known that multiple non negative stationary solutions exist and an exclusion principle occurs (i.e For all $i\neq i_0, \bar v_{i}=0$ and $\bar v_{i_0}>0$). Then we explore a typical example that has been proposed to explain some experimental data. For such particular models we characterise the speed of convergence to the equilibrium. In a second part, under some additional assumption, we prove the existence of a positive steady state for the full system and we analyse the long term dynamics. The proofs mainly rely on the construction of a relative entropy which plays the role of a Lyapunov functional.

A realistic transport model showing the interplay of the hopping transport between the outer shells of iron filled entangled multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) and the diffusive transport through the inner part of the tubes, as a function of the filling percentage, is developed. This model is based on low-temperature electrical resistivity and magneto-resistance (MR) measurements. The conductivity at low temperatures showed a crossover from Efros-Shklovski (E-S) variable range hopping (VRH) to Mott VRH in 3 dimensions (3D) between the neighboring tubes as the iron weight percentage is increased from 11% to 19% in the MWNTs. The MR in the hopping regime is strongly dependent on temperature as well as magnetic field and shows both positive and negative signs, which are discussed in terms of wave function shrinkage and quantum interference effects, respectively. A further increase of the iron percentage from 19% to 31% gives a conductivity crossover from Mott VRH to 3D weak localization (WL). This change is ascribed to the formation of long iron nanowires at the core of the nanotubes, which yields a long dephasing length (e.g. 30 nm) at the lowest measured temperature. Although the overall transport in this network is described by a 3D WL model, the weak temperature dependence of inelastic scattering length expressed as L_phi ~T^-0.3 suggests the possibility for the presence of one-dimensional channels in the network due to the formation of long Fe nanowires inside the tubes, which might introduce an alignment in the random structure.

The resulting semi-linear parabolic PDE with random coefficients does not admit a global nonnegative stationary solution, which implies that an interface that was flat originally cannot get stationary.
