This paper investigates an optimal control problem associated with a two-dimensional multi-species Cahn-Hilliard-Keller-Segel tumor growth model, which incorporates complex biological processes such as species diffusion, chemotaxis, angiogenesis, and nutrient consumption, resulting in a highly nonlinear system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The modeling derivation and corresponding analysis have been addressed in a previous contribution. Building on this foundation, the scope of this study involves investigating a distributed control problem with the goal of optimizing a tracking-type cost functional. This latter aims to minimize the deviation of tumor cell location from desired target configurations while penalizing the costs associated with implementing control measures, akin to introducing a suitable medication. Under appropriate mathematical assumptions, we demonstrate that sufficiently regular solutions exhibit continuous dependence on the control variable. Furthermore, we establish the existence of optimal controls and characterize the first-order necessary optimality conditions through a suitable variational inequality.

Phase field systems of this type govern the evolution of diffusive phase transition processes with conserved order parameter. For such systems, optimal control problems have been studied in the past. We focus here on the situation when the cost functional of the optimal control problem contains a sparsity-enhancing nondifferentiable term like the L1-norm. For such cases, we establish first-order necessary and second-order sufficient optimality conditions for locally optimal controls, where in the approach to second-order sufficient conditions we employ a technique introduced by E. Casas, C. Ryll and F. Tröltzsch in the paper [SIAM J. Control Optim. 53 (2015), 2168-2202]. The main novelty of this paper is that this method, which has recently been successfully applied to systems of viscous Cahn-Hilliard type, can be adapted also to the classical nonviscous case. Since in the case without viscosity the solutions to the state and adjoint systems turn out to be considerably less regular than in the viscous case, numerous additional technical difficulties have to be overcome, and additional conditions have to be imposed. In particular, we have to restrict ourselves to the case when the nonlinearity driving the phase separation is regular, while in the presence of a viscosity term also nonlinearities of logarithmic type turn could be admitted. In addition, the implicit function theorem, which was employed to establish the needed differentiability properties of the control-to-state operator in the viscous case, does not apply in our situation and has to be substituted by other arguments.

Partial differential equation (PDE) models for infectious disease have received renewed interest in recent years. Most models of this type extend classical compartmental formulations with additional terms accounting for spatial dynamics, with Fickian diffusion being the most common such term. However, while diffusion may be appropriate for modeling vector-borne diseases, or diseases among plants or wildlife, the spatial propagation of airborne diseases in human populations is heavily dependent on human contact and mobility patterns, which are not necessarily well-described by diffusion. By including an additional chemotaxis-inspired term, in which the infection is propagated along the positive gradient of the susceptible population (from regions of low- to high-density of susceptibles), one may provide a more suitable description of these dynamics. This article introduces and analyzes a mathematical model of infectious disease incorporating a modified chemotaxis-type term. The model is analyzed mathematically and the well-posedness of the resulting PDE system is demonstrated. A series of numerical simulations are provided, demonstrating the ability of the model to naturally capture important phenomena not easily observed in standard diffusion models, including propagation over long spatial distances over short time scales and the emergence of localized infection hotspots

In this paper we study the optimal control of a parabolic initial-boundary value problem of viscous Cahn-Hilliard type with zero Neumann boundary conditions. Phase field systems of this type govern the evolution of diffusive phase transition processes with conserved order parameter. It is assumed that the nonlinear functions driving the physical processes within the spatial domain are double-well potentials of logarithmic type whose derivatives become singular at the boundary of their respective domains of definition. For such systems, optimal control problems have been studied in the past. We focus here on the situation when the cost functional of the optimal control problem contains a nondifferentiable term like the L1-norm, which leads to sparsity of optimal controls. For such cases, we establish first-order necessary and second-order sufficient optimality conditions for locally optimal controls. This work investigates the well-posedness and optimal control of a sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation, a higher-order variant of the celebrated and well-established Cahn-Hilliard equation. The equation is endowed with a source term, where the control variable enters as a distributed mass regulator. The inclusion of additional spatial derivatives in the sixth-order formulation enables the model to capture curvature effects, leading to a more accurate depiction of isothermal phase separation dynamics in complex materials systems. We provide a well-posedness result for the aforementioned system when the corresponding nonlinearity of double-well shape is regular and then analyze a corresponding optimal control problem. For the latter, existence of optimal controls is established, and the first-order necessary optimality conditions are characterized via a suitable variational inequality. These results aim at contributing to improve the understanding of the mathematical properties and control aspects of the sixth-order Cahn-Hilliard equation, offering potential applications in the design and optimization of materials with tailored microstructures and properties.

We investigate a new diffuse-interface model that describes creeping two-phase flows (i.e., flows exhibiting a low Reynolds number), especially flows that permeate a porous medium. The system of equations consists of a Brinkman equation for the volume averaged velocity field as well as a convective Cahn--Hilliard equation with dynamic boundary conditions for the phase-field, which describes the location of the two fluids within the domain. The dynamic boundary conditions are incorporated to model the interaction of the fluids with the wall of the container more precisely. In particular, they allow for a dynamic evolution of the contact angle between the interface separating the fluids and the boundary, and also for a convection-induced motion of the corresponding contact line. For our model, we first prove the existence of global-in-time weak solutions in the case where regular potentials are used in the Cahn--Hilliard subsystem. In this case, we can further show the uniqueness of the weak solution under suitable additional assumptions. Moreover, we further prove the existence of weak solutions in the case of singular potentials. Therefore, we regularize such singular potentials by a Yosida approximation, such that the results for regular potentials can be applied, and eventually pass to the limit in this approximation scheme.

In this paper we derive a new model for visco-elasticity with large deformations where the independent variables are the stretch and the rotation tensors which intervene with second gradients terms accounting for physical properties in the principle of virtual power. Another basic feature of our model is that there is conditional compatibility, entering the model as kinematic constraints and depending on the magnitude of an internal force associated to dislocations. Moreover, due to the kinematic constraints, the virtual velocities depend on the solutions of the problem. As a consequence, the variational formulation of the problem and the related mathematical analysis are neither standard nor straightforward. We adopt the strategy to invert the kinematic constraints through Green propagators, obtaining a system of integro-differential coupled equations. As a first mathematical step, we develop the analysis of the model in a simplified setting, i.e. considering the quasi-stationary version of the full system where we neglect inertia. In this context, we prove the existence of a global in time strong solution in three space dimensions for the system, employing techniques from PDEs and convex analysis, thus obtaining a novel breakthrough in the field of three-dimensional finite visco-elasticity described in terms of the stretch and rotation variables. We also study a limit problem, letting the magnitude of the internal force associated to dislocations tend to zero, in which case the deformation becomes incompatible and the equations takes the form of a coupled system of PDEs. For the limit problem we obtain global existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence from data in three space dimensions.

This paper is concerned with the well-posedness and optimal control problem of a reaction-diffusion system for an epidemic Susceptible-Infected-Recovered-Susceptible (SIRS) mathematical model in which the dynamics develops in a spatially heterogeneous environment. Using as control variables the transmission rates $u_{i}$ and $u_{e}$ of contagion resulting from the contact with both asymptomatic and symptomatic persons, respectively, we optimize the number of exposed and infected individuals at a final time $T$ of the controlled evolution of the system. More precisely, we search for the optimal $u_{i}$ and $u_{e}$ such that the number of infected plus exposed does not exceed at the final time a threshold value $Λ$, fixed a priori. We prove here the existence of optimal controls in a proper functional framework and we derive the first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of the adjoint variables.

In this note, we study the optimal control of a nonisothermal phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type that constitutes an extension of the classical Caginalp model for nonisothermal phase transitions with a conserved order parameter. It couples a Cahn-Hilliard type equation with source term for the order parameter with the universal balance law of internal energy. In place of the standard Fourier form, the constitutive law of the heat flux is assumed in the form given by the theory developed by Green and Naghdi, which accounts for a possible thermal memory of the evolution. This has the consequence that the balance law of internal energy becomes a second-order in time equation for the thermal displacement or freezing index, that is, a primitive with respect to time of the temperature. Another particular feature of our system is the presence of the source term in the equation for the order parameter, which entails further mathematical difficulties because the mass conservation of the order parameter is no longer satisfied. We study the case that the double-well potential driving the evolution of the phase transition is given by the nondifferentiable double obstacle potential, thereby complementing recent results obtained for the differentiable cases of regular and logarithmic potentials. We derive first-order necessary optimality conditions for the control problem. The analysis is carried out by employing the so-called deep quench approximation in which the nondifferentiable double obstacle potential is approximated by a family of logarithmic potentials for which meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions are available. Since the results for the logarithmic potentials crucially depend on the validity of the so-called strict separation property which is only available in the spatially two-dimensional situation, our whole analysis is restricted to the two-dimensional case.

We propose a new Cahn-Hilliard phase field model coupled to incompressible viscoelasticity at large strains, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model and formulated in the Eulerian configuration. A new kind of diffusive regularization, of Allen-Cahn type, is introduced in the transport equation for the deformation gradient, together with a regularizing interface term depending on the gradient of the deformation gradient in the free energy of the system. We study the global existence of a weak solution for the model. While standard diffusive regularizations of the transport equation for the deformation gradient presented in literature allows the existence study only for simplified cases, i.e. in two space dimensions and for convex elastic free energy densities of Neo-Hookean type which are independent from the phase field variable, the present regularization allows to study more general cases. In particular, we obtain the global existence of a weak solution in three space dimensions and for generic nonlinear elastic energy densities with polynomial growth. Our analysis considers elastic free energy densities which depend on the phase field variable and which can possibly degenerate for some values of the phase field variable. By means of an iterative argument based on elliptic regularity bootstrap steps, we find the maximum allowed polynomial growths of the Cahn-Hilliard potential and the elastic energy density which guarantee the existence of a solution in three space dimensions. We propose two unconditionally energy stable finite element approximations of the model, based on convex splitting ideas and on the use of a scalar auxiliary variable, proving the existence and stability of discrete solutions. We finally report numerical results for different test cases with shape memory alloy type free energy with pure phases characterized by different elastic properties.

Actually, the related problem can be seen as a transmission problem for the phase variable in the bulk and the corresponding variable on the boundary. The asymptotic behavior as the coefficient of the surface diffusion acting on the boundary phase variable goes to 0 is investigated. By this analysis we obtain a forward-backward dynamic boundary condition at the limit. We can deal with a general class of potentials having a double-well structure, including the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. We illustrate that the limit problem is well-posed by also proving a continuous dependence estimate. Moreover, in the case when the two graphs, in the bulk and on the boundary, exhibit the same growth, we show that the solution of the limit problem is more regular and we prove an error estimate for a suitable order of the diffusion parameter.

In this paper, we investigate optimal control problems for a nonlinear state system which constitutes a version of the Caginalp phase field system modeling nonisothermal phase transitions with a nonconserved order parameter that takes thermal memory into account. The state system, which is a first-order approximation of a thermodynamically consistent system, is inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi. It consists of two nonlinearly coupled partial differential equations that govern the phase dynamics and the universal balance law for internal energy, written in terms of the phase variable and the so-called thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to time of temperature. We extend recent results obtained for optimal control problems in which the free energy governing the phase transition was differentiable (i.e., of regular or logarithmic type) to the nonsmooth case of a double obstacle potential. As is well known, in this nondifferentiable case standard methods to establish the existence of appropriate Lagrange multipliers fail. This difficulty is overcome utilizing of the so-called deep quench approach. Namely, the double obstacle potential is approximated by a family of (differentiable) logarithmic ones for which the existence of optimal controls and first-order necessary conditions of optimality in terms of the adjoint state variables and a variational inequality are known. By proving appropriate bounds for the adjoint states of the approximating systems, we can pass to the limit in the corresponding first-order necessary conditions, thereby establishing meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions also for the case of the double obstacle potential.

We propose a new class of phase field models coupled to viscoelasticity with large deformations, obtained from a diffuse interface mixture model composed by a phase with elastic properties and a liquid phase. The model is formulated in the Eulerian configuration and it is derived by imposing the mass balance for the mixture components and the momentum balance that comes from a generalized form of the principle of virtual powers. The latter considers the presence of a system of microforces and microstresses associated to the microscopic interactions between the mixture's constituents together with a system of macroforces and macrostresses associated to their viscoelastic behavior, taking into account also the friction between the phases. The free energy density of the system is given as the sum of a Cahn-Hilliard term and an elastic polyconvex term, with a coupling between the phase field variable and the elastic deformation gradient in the elastic contribution. General constitutive assumptions complying with a mechanical version of the second law of thermodynamics in isothermal situations are taken. We study the global existence of a weak solution for a simplified and regularized version of the general model, which considers an incompressible elastic free energy of Neo-Hookean type with elastic coefficients depending on the phase field variable. The regularization is properly designed to deal with the coupling between the phase field variable and the elastic deformation gradient in the elastic energy density. The analysis is made both in two and three space dimensions.

This paper is concerned with the well-posedness of a diffusion-reaction system for a Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Recovered (SEIR) mathematical model. This model is written in terms of four nonlinear partial differential equations with nonlinear diffusions, depending on the total amount of the SEIR populations. The model aims at describing the spatio-temporal spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and is a variation of the one recently introduced, discussed and tested in [A. Viguerie et al, Diffusion-reaction compartmental models formulated in a continuum mechanics framework: application to COVID-19, mathematical analysis, and numerical study, Comput. Mech. 66 (2020) 1131-1152]. Here, we deal with the mathematical analysis of the resulting Cauchy-Neumann problem: the existence of solutions is proved in a rather general setting and a suitable time discretization procedure is employed. It is worth mentioning that the uniform boundedness of the discrete solution is shown by carefully exploiting the structure of the system. Uniform estimates and passage to the limit with respect to the time step allow to complete the existence proof. Then, two uniqueness theorems are offered, one in the case of a constant diffusion coefficient and the other for more regular data, in combination with a regularity result for the solutions.

The paper treats the problem of optimal distributed control of a Cahn-Hilliard-Oono system in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $1\leq d\leq 3$, with the control located in the mass term and admitting general potentials that include both the case of a regular potential and the case of some singular potential. The first part of the paper is concerned with the dependence of the phase variable on the control variable. In the case of a logarithmic potential, we need to prove an ad hoc strict separation property, and for this reason we have to restrict ourselves to the case $d = 2$. In the rest of the work, we study the necessary first-order optimality conditions, which are proved under suitable compatibility conditions on the initial datum of the phase variable and the time derivative of the control, at least in case of potentials having unbounded domain.
PLEASE NOTE: A revised version of this paper has been published in Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. S 15 (2022), 2135-2172: the authors point out that both the published version and the arXiv preprint contain a trivial mistake in formula (2.21), which leads to suitable changes in the assumption (2.10) and in some occurrences of it. Namely, (2.21) and (2.10) become $ \bar \varphi(t) = \bar \varphi_0 e^{-t} + \int_0^t e^{-(t-s)} \bar u(s) \, ds$ for every $t\in[0,T]$, and $-M - (\bar\varphi_0)^- , M + (\bar\varphi_0)^+$ belong to the interior of $D(β)$, respectively. The formula just after (2.21) becomes $-M - (\bar\varphi_0)^- \leq \bar \varphi(t) \leq M + (\bar\varphi_0)^+$ and a similar change must be done in (4.20). The first line of (2.24) is now implied by the new (2.21). Next, (2.39) becomes $-(M+ R) - (\bar\varphi_0)^- , (M+ R) + (\bar\varphi_0)^+$ belong to the interior of $D(β)$. Similar changes must be done in the interval written just two lines before (4.18) and in (4.18) itself.

A nonlinear extension of the Caginalp phase field system is considered that takes thermal memory into account. The resulting model, which is a first-order approximation of a thermodynamically consistent system, is inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi. Two equations, resulting from phase dynamics and the universal balance law for internal energy, are written in terms of the phase variable (representing a non-conserved order parameter) and the so-called thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to time of temperature. Existence and continuous dependence results are shown for weak and strong solutions to the corresponding initial-boundary value problem. Then, an optimal control problem is investigated for a suitable cost functional, in which two data act as controls, namely, the distributed heat source and the initial temperature. Fréchet differentiability between suitable Banach spaces is shown for the control-to-state operator, and meaningful first-order necessary optimality conditions are derived in terms of variational inequalities involving the adjoint variables. Eventually, characterizations of the optimal controls are given.

An asymptotic analysis for a system with equation and dynamic boundary condition of Cahn-Hilliard type is carried out as the coefficient of the surface diffusion acting on the phase variable tends to 0, thus obtaining a forward-backward dynamic boundary condition at the limit. This is done in a very general setting, with nonlinear terms admitting maximal monotone graphs both in the bulk and on the boundary. The two graphs are related by a growth condition, with the boundary graph that dominates the other one. It turns out that in the limiting procedure the solution of the problem looses some regularity and the limit equation has to be properly interpreted in the sense of a subdifferential inclusion. However, the limit problem is still well-posed since a continuous dependence estimate can be proved. Moreover, in the case when the two graphs exhibit the same growth, it is shown that the solution enjoys more regularity and the boundary condition holds almost everywhere. An error estimate can also be shown, for a suitable order of the diffusion parameter.

This paper treats a distributed optimal control problem for a tumor growth model of Cahn-Hilliard type including chemotaxis. The evolution of the tumor fraction is governed by a variational inequality corresponding to a double obstacle nonlinearity occurring in the associated potential. In addition, the control and state variables are nonlinearly coupled and, furthermore, the cost functional contains a nondifferentiable term like the $L^1$-norm in order to include sparsity effects which is of utmost relevance, especially time sparsity, in the context of cancer therapies as applying a control to the system reflects in exposing the patient to an intensive medical treatment. To cope with the difficulties originating from the variational inequality in the state system, we employ the so-called "deep quench approximation" in which the convex part of the double obstacle potential is approximated by logarithmic functions. For such functions, first-order necessary conditions of optimality can be established by invoking recent results. We use these results to derive corresponding optimality conditions also for the double obstacle case, by deducing a variational inequality in terms of the associated adjoint state variables. The resulting variational inequality can be exploited to also obtain sparsity results for the optimal controls.

The related system includes two evolutionary operator equations involving fractional powers of selfadjoint, nonnegative, unbounded linear operators having compact resolvents. Both equations contain nonlinearities and in particular the equation describing the dynamics of the tumor phase variable has the structure of a Allen-Cahn equation with double-well potential and additional nonlinearity depending also on the other variable, which represents the nutrient concentration. The equation for the nutrient concentration is nonlinear as well, with a term coupling both variables. For this system we design an existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence theory by setting up a careful analysis which allows the consideration of nonsmooth potentials and the treatment of continuous nonlinearities with general growth properties.

This paper concerns a distributed optimal control problem for a tumor growth model of Cahn-Hilliard type including chemotaxis with possibly singular potentials, where the control and state variables are nonlinearly coupled. First, we discuss the weak well-posedness of the system under very general assumptions for the potentials, which may be singular and nonsmooth. Then, we establish the strong well-posedness of the system in a reduced setting, which however admits the logarithmic potential: this analysis will lay the foundation for the study of the corresponding optimal control problem. Concerning the optimization problem, we address the existence of minimizers and establish both first-order necessary and second-order sufficient conditions for optimality. The mathematically challenging second-order analysis is completely performed here, after showing that the solution mapping is twice continuously differentiable between suitable Banach spaces via the implicit function theorem. Then, we completely identify the second-order Fréchet derivative of the control-to-state operator and carry out a thorough and detailed investigation about the related properties.

Prostate cancer can be lethal in advanced stages, for which chemotherapy may become the only viable therapeutic option. While there is no clear clinical management strategy fitting all patients, cytotoxic chemotherapy with docetaxel is currently regarded as the gold standard. However, tumors may regain activity after treatment conclusion and become resistant to docetaxel. This situation calls for new delivery strategies and drug compounds enabling an improved therapeutic outcome. Combination of docetaxel with antiangiogenic therapy has been considered a promising strategy. Bevacizumab is the most common antiangiogenic drug, but clinical studies have not revealed a clear benefit from its combination with docetaxel. Here, we capitalize on our prior work on mathematical modeling of prostate cancer growth subjected to combined cytotoxic and antiangiogenic therapies, and propose an optimal control framework to robustly compute the drug-independent cytotoxic and antiangiogenic effects enabling an optimal therapeutic control of tumor dynamics. We describe the formulation of the optimal control problem, for which we prove the existence of at least a solution and determine the necessary first order optimality conditions. We then present numerical algorithms based on isogeometric analysis to run a preliminary simulation study over a single cycle of combined therapy. Our results suggest that only cytotoxic chemotherapy is required to optimize therapeutic performance and we show that our framework can produce superior solutions to combined therapy with docetaxel and bevacizumab. We also illustrate how the optimal drug-naïve cytotoxic effects computed in these simulations may be successfully leveraged to guide drug production and delivery strategies by running a nonlinear least-square fit of protocols involving docetaxel and a new design drug.

The operators appearing in the system equations are fractional powers $A^{2r}$ and $B^{2σ}$ (in the spectral sense) of general linear operators $A$ and $B$, which are densely defined, unbounded, selfadjoint, and monotone in the Hilbert space $L^2(Ω)$, for some bounded and smooth domain $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^3$, and have compact resolvents. Existence, uniqueness, and regularity results have been proved in the quoted paper. Here, in the case of the viscous system, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the parameter $σ$ appearing in the operator $B^{2σ}$ decreasingly tends to zero. We prove convergence to a phase relaxation problem at the limit, and we also investigate this limiting problem, in which an additional term containing the projection of the phase variable on the kernel of $B$ appears.

The initial boundary value problem for a Cahn-Hilliard system subject to a dynamic boundary condition of Allen-Cahn type is treated. The vanishing of the surface diffusion on the dynamic boundary condition is the point of emphasis. By the asymptotic analysis as the diffusion coefficient tends to 0, one can expect that the solutions of the surface diffusion problem converge to the solution of the problem without the surface diffusion. This is actually the case, but the solution of the limiting problem naturally looses some regularity. Indeed, the system we investigate is rather complicate due to the presence of nonlinear terms including general maximal monotone graphs both in the bulk and on the boundary. The two graphs are related each to the other by a growth condition, with the boundary graph that dominates the other one. In general, at the asymptotic limit a weaker form of the boundary condition is obtained, but in the case when the two graphs exhibit the same growth the boundary condition still holds almost everywhere.

In the present contribution we study a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system where a further leading term in the expression for the chemical potential $ μ$ is present. This term consists of a subdifferential operator $S$ in $L^2(Ω)$ (where $Ω$ is the domain where the evolution takes place) acting on the difference of the phase variable $\varphi$ and a given state $\varphi^* $, which is prescribed and may depend on space and time. We prove existence and continuous dependence results in case of both homogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions for the chemical potential $μ$. Next, by assuming that $S=ρ\,$sign, a multiple of the sign operator, and for smoother data, we first show regularity results. Then, in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions for $μ$ and under suitable conditions on $ρ$ and $Ω$, we also prove the sliding mode property, that is, that $\varphi$ is forced to join the evolution of $\varphi^* $ in some time $T^*$ lower than the given final time $T$. We point out that all our results hold true for a very general and possibly singular multi-well potential acting on $\varphi$.

This generalization, inspired by the theories developed by Green and Naghdi on one side, and Podio-Guidugli on the other, deals with the concept of thermal displacement, i.e., a primitive with respect to the time of the temperature. Two control laws are considered: the former forces the solution to reach a sliding manifold described by a linear constraint between the temperature and the phase variable; the latter forces the phase variable to reach a prescribed distribution $\varphi^*$. We prove existence, uniqueness as well as continuous dependence of the solutions for both problems; two regularity results are also given. We also prove that, under suitable conditions, the solutions reach the sliding manifold within finite time.

In this paper, we study a system of three evolutionary operator equations involving fractional powers of selfadjoint, monotone, unbounded, linear operators having compact resolvents. This system constitutes a generalized and relaxed version of a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type modelling tumor growth that has originally been proposed in Hawkins-Daarud et al. (Int. J. Numer. Math. Biomed. Eng. 28 (2012), 3-24). The original phase field system and certain relaxed versions thereof have been studied in recent papers co-authored by the present authors and E. Rocca. The model consists of a Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor cell fraction, coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation for a function S representing the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. Effects due to fluid motion are neglected. Motivated by the possibility that the diffusional regimes governing the evolution of the different constituents of the model may be of different (e.g., fractional) type, the present authors studied in a recent note a generalization of the systems investigated in the abovementioned works. Under rather general assumptions, well-posedness and regularity results have been shown. In particular, by writing the equation governing the evolution of the chemical potential in the form of a general variational inequality, also singular or nonsmooth contributions of logarithmic or of double obstacle type to the energy density could be admitted. In this note, we perform an asymptotic analysis of the governing system as two (small) relaxation parameters approach zero separately and simultaneously. Corresponding well-posedness and regularity results are established for the respective cases; in particular, we give a detailed discussion which assumptions on the admissible nonlinearities have to be postulated in each of the occurring cases.

The definition of the chemical potential includes two regularizations: a viscosity and a diffusive term. First of all, we prove existence and uniqueness of a bounded solution to the system using a nonstandard maximum-principle argument for time-discretizations of doubly nonlinear equations. Possibly including singular potentials, this novel result brings improvements over previous approaches to this problem. Secondly, under suitable assumptions on the data, we show the convergence of solutions to the respective limit problems once either of the two regularization parameters vanishes.

In our approach, we are able to deal with a general class of potentials with double-well structure, including the physically relevant logarithmic potential and the non-smooth double-obstacle potential. Existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of global weak solutions are established. The proof is based on a novel time-discretization scheme for the approximation of the continuous problem. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is a common treatment for advanced prostate cancer. These tumors are also known to rely on angiogenesis, i.e., the growth of local microvasculature via chemical signaling produced by the tumor. Thus, several clinical studies have been investigating antiangiogenic therapy for advanced prostate cancer, either as monotherapy or combined with standard cytotoxic protocols. However, the complex genetic alterations promoting prostate cancer growth complicate the selection of the best chemotherapeutic approach for each patient's tumor. Here, we present a mathematical model of prostate cancer growth and chemotherapy that may enable physicians to test and design personalized chemotherapeutic protocols in silico. We use the phase-field method to describe tumor growth, which we assume to be driven by a generic nutrient following reaction-diffusion dynamics. Tumor proliferation and apoptosis (i.e., programmed cell death) can be parameterized with experimentally-determined values. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is included as a term downregulating tumor net proliferation, while antiangiogenic therapy is modeled as a reduction in intratumoral nutrient supply. Another equation couples the tumor phase field with the production of prostate-specific antigen, which is an extensively used prostate cancer biomarker. We prove the well-posedness of our model and we run a series of representative simulations using an isogeometric method to explore untreated tumor growth as well as the effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy and antiangiogenic therapy, both alone and combined. Our simulations show that our model captures the growth morphologies of prostate cancer as well as common outcomes of cytotoxic and antiangiogenic mono and combined therapy. Our model also reproduces the usual temporal trends in tumor volume and prostate-specific antigen evolution observed in previous studies.

The system is a generalization of a Cahn-Hilliard type phase field system modeling tumor growth that goes back to Hawkins-Daarud et al. (Int. J. Numer. Math. Biomed. Eng. 28 (2012), 3-24). The aim of the control process, which could be realized by either administering a drug or monitoring the nutrition, is to keep the tumor cell fraction under control while avoiding possible harm for the patient. In contrast to previous studies, in which the occurring unbounded operators governing the diffusional regimes were all given by the Laplacian with zero Neumann boundary conditions, the operators may in our case be different; more generally, we consider systems with fractional powers of the type that were studied in the recent work Adv. A distributed optimal control problem for an extended model of phase field type for tumor growth is addressed. In this model, the chemotaxis effects are also taken into account. The control is realized by two control variables that design the dispensation of some drugs to the patient. The cost functional is of tracking type, whereas the potential setting has been kept quite general in order to allow regular and singular potentials to be considered. In this direction, some relaxation terms have been introduced in the system. We show the well-posedness of the state system, the Fréchet differentiability of the control-to-state operator in a suitable functional analytic framework, and, lastly, we characterize the first-order necessary conditions of optimality in terms of a variational inequality involving the adjoint variables.

In this paper, we study a system of three evolutionary operator equations involving fractional powers of selfadjoint, monotone, unbounded, linear operators having compact resolvents. This system constitutes a generalization of a phase field system of Cahn-Hilliard type modelling tumor growth that has been proposed in Hawkins-Daarud et al. (Int. J. Numer. Math. Biomed. Eng. 28 (2012), 3-24) and investigated in recent papers co-authored by the present authors and E. Rocca. The model consists of a Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor cell fraction, coupled to a reaction-diffusion equation for a function S representing the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. Effects due to fluid motion are neglected. The generalization investigated in this paper is motivated by the possibility that the diffusional regimes governing the evolution of the different constituents of the model may be of different (e.g., fractional) type. Under rather general assumptions, well-posedness and regularity results are shown. In particular, by writing the equation governing the evolution of the chemical potential in the form of a general variational inequality, also singular or nonsmooth contributions of logarithmic or of double obstacle type to the energy density can be admitted.

In this contribution, we deal with the longtime behavior of the solutions to the fractional variant of the Cahn-Hilliard system, with possibly singular potentials, that we have recently investigated in the paper `Well-posedness and regularity for a generalized fractional Cahn-Hilliard system' (see arXiv:1804.11290). More precisely, we study the omega-limit of the phase parameter and characterize it completely. Our characterization depends on the first eigenvalue of one of the operators involved: if it is positive, then the chemical potential vanishes at infinity and every element of the omega-limit is a stationary solution to the phase equation; if, instead, the first eigenvalue is 0, then every element of the omega-limit satisfies a problem containing a real function related to the chemical potential. Such a function is nonunique and time dependent, in general, as we show by an example. However, we give sufficient conditions in order that this function be uniquely determined and constant.

This paper is concerned with a thermomechanical model describing phase separation phenomena in terms of the entropy balance and equilibrium equations for the microforces. The related system is highly nonlinear and admits singular potentials in the phase equation. Both the viscous and the non-viscous cases are considered in the Cahn--Hilliard relations characterizing the phase dynamics. The entropy balance is written in terms of the absolute temperature and of its logarithm, appearing under time derivative. The initial and boundary value problem is considered for the system of partial differential equations. The existence of a global solution is proved via some approximations involving Yosida regularizations and a suitable time discretization.

The paper arXiv:1804.11290 contains well-posedness and regularity results for a system of evolutionary operator equations having the structure of a Cahn-Hilliard system. The operators appearing in the system equations were fractional versions in the spectral sense of general linear operators A and B having compact resolvents and are densely defined, unbounded, selfadjoint, and monotone in a Hilbert space of functions defined in a smooth domain. The associated double-well potentials driving the phase separation process modeled by the Cahn-Hilliard system could be of a very general type that includes standard physically meaningful cases such as polynomial, logarithmic, and double obstacle nonlinearities. In the subsequent paper arXiv:1807.03218, an analysis of distributed optimal control problems was performed for such evolutionary systems, where only the differentiable case of certain polynomial and logarithmic double-well potentials could be admitted. Results concerning existence of optimizers and first-order necessary optimality conditions were derived. In the present paper, we complement these results by studying a distributed control problem for such evolutionary systems in the case of nondifferentiable nonlinearities of double obstacle type. For such nonlinearities, it is well known that the standard constraint qualifications cannot be applied to construct appropriate Lagrange multipliers. To overcome this difficulty, we follow here the so-called "deep quench" method. We first give a general convergence analysis of the deep quench approximation that includes an error estimate and then demonstrate that its use leads in the double obstacle case to appropriate first-order necessary optimality conditions in terms of a variational inequality and the associated adjoint state system.

The feedback controller we design here is with actuation only on the temperature flow of the system, on one part of the boundary only. Moreover, it is of proportional type, given in an explicit form, expressed only in terms of the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator, being easy to manipulate from the computational point of view. Furthermore, it ensures that the closed loop nonlinear system exponentially reaches the prescribed stationary solution provided that the initial datum is close enough to it.

Here $N \in \mathbb{N}$, $T>0$, $\ell>0$, $f$ is a source term, $β$ is a maximal monotone graph and $π$ is a Lipschitz continuous function. We note that in the above system the nonlinearity $β+π$ replaces the derivative of a potential of double well type. Thus it turns out that the system is a generalization of the Caginalp phase field model and it has been studied by many authors in the case that $Ω$ is a bounded domain. However, for unbounded domains the analysis of the system seems to be at an early stage. In this paper we study the existence of solutions by employing a time discretization scheme and passing to the limit as the time step $h$ goes to $0$. In the limit procedure we face with the difficulty that the embedding $H^1(Ω) \hookrightarrow L^2(Ω)$ is not compact in the case of unbounded domains. Moreover, we can prove an interesting error estimate of order $h^{1/2}$ for the difference between continuous and discrete solutions.

In the recent paper `Well-posedness and regularity for a generalized fractional Cahn-Hilliard system' (arXiv:1804.11290) by the same authors, general well-posedness results have been established for a a class of evolutionary systems of two equations having the structure of a viscous Cahn-Hilliard system, in which nonlinearities of double-well type occur. The operators appearing in the system equations are fractional versions in the spectral sense of general linear operators A,B having compact resolvents, which are densely defined, unbounded, selfadjoint, and monotone in a Hilbert space of functions defined in a smooth domain. In this work we complement the results given in arXiv:1804.11290 by studying a distributed control problem for this evolutionary system. The main difficulty in the analysis is to establish a rigorous Frechet differentiability result for the associated control-to-state mapping. This seems only to be possible if the state stays bounded, which, in turn, makes it necessary to postulate an additional global boundedness assumption. One typical situation, in which this assumption is satisfied, arises when B is the negative Laplacian with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions and the nonlinearity is smooth with polynomial growth of at most order four. Also a case with logarithmic nonlinearity can be handled. Under the global boundedness assumption, we establish existence and first-order necessary optimality conditions for the optimal control problem in terms of a variational inequality and the associated adjoint state system.

The operators $A$ and $B$ are supposed to be densely defined, unbounded, self-adjoint, monotone in the Hilbert space $L^2(Ω)$, for some bounded and smooth domain $Ω$, and have compact resolvents. Our definition of the fractional powers of operators uses the approach via spectral theory. A nonlinearity of double-well type occurs in the phase equation and either a regular or logarithmic potential, as well as a non-differentiable potential involving an indicator function, is admitted in our approach. We show general well-posedness and regularity results, extending the corresponding results that are known for the non-fractional elliptic operators with zero Neumann conditions or other boundary conditions like Dirichlet or Robin ones. Then, we investigate the longtime behavior of the system, by fully characterizing every element of the $ω$-limit as a stationary solution. In the final part of the paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the system as the parameter $σ$ appearing in the operator $B^{2σ}$ that plays in the phase equation decreasingly tends to zero. We can prove convergence to a phase relaxation problem at the limit, in which an additional term containing the projection of the phase variable on the kernel of $B$ appears.

In this paper, we investigate a rather general system of two operator equations that has the structure of a viscous or nonviscous Cahn--Hilliard system in which nonlinearities of double-well type occur. Standard cases like regular or logarithmic potentials, as well as non-differentiable potentials involving indicator functions, are admitted. The operators appearing in the system equations are fractional versions of general linear operators $A$ and $B$, where the latter are densely defined, unbounded, self-adjoint and monotone in a Hilbert space of functions defined in a smooth domain and have compact resolvents. We remark that our definition of the fractional power of operators uses the approach via spectral theory. Typical cases are given by standard second-order elliptic operators (e.g., the Laplacian) with zero Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, but also other cases like fourth-order systems or systems involving the Stokes operator are covered by the theory. We derive general well-posedness and regularity results that extend corresponding results which are known for either the non-fractional Laplacian with zero Neumann boundary condition or the fractional Laplacian with zero Dirichlet condition. It turns out that the first eigenvalue $λ_1$ of $A$ plays an important und not entirely obvious role: if $λ_1$ is positive, then the operators $\,A\,$ and $\,B\,$ may be completely unrelated; if, however, $λ_1=0$, then it must be simple and the corresponding one-dimensional eigenspace has to consist of the constant functions and to be a subset of the domain of definition of a certain fractional power of $B$. We are able to show general existence, uniqueness, and regularity results for both these cases, as well as for both the viscous and the nonviscous system.

We study a coupled bulk-surface Allen-Cahn system with an affine linear transmission condition, that is, the trace values of the bulk variable and the values of the surface variable are connected via an affine relation, and this serves to generalize the usual dynamic boundary conditions. We tackle the problem of well-posedness via a penalization method using Robin boundary conditions. In particular, for the relaxation problem, the strong well-posedness and long-time behavior of solutions can be shown for more general and possibly nonlinear relations. New difficulties arise since the surface variable is no longer the trace of the bulk variable, and uniform estimates in the relaxation parameter are scarce. Nevertheless, weak convergence to the original problem can be shown. Using the approach of Colli and Fukao (Math. Models Appl. Sci. 2015), we show strong existence to the original problem with affine linear relations, and derive an error estimate between solutions to the relaxed and original problems.
