This research exploits the applications of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, specifically addressing the enhancement of communication reliability with modulated signals. Specifically, we first derive the analytical downlink symbol error rate (SER) of each user as a multivariate function of both the phase-shift and beamforming vectors. The analytical SER enables us to obtain insights into the synergistic dynamics between the RIS and MIMO communication. We then introduce a novel average SER minimization problem subject to the practical constraints of the transmitted power budget and phase shift coefficients, which is NP-hard. By incorporating the differential evolution (DE) algorithm as a pivotal tool for optimizing the intricate active and passive beamforming variables in RIS-assisted communication systems, the non-convexity of the considered SER optimization problem can be effectively handled. Furthermore, an efficient local search is incorporated into the DE algorithm to overcome the local optimum, and hence offer low SER and high communication reliability. Monte Carlo simulations validate the analytical results and the proposed optimization framework, indicating that the joint active and passive beamforming design is superior to the other benchmarks.

Wireless-powered communications (WPCs) are increasingly crucial for extending the lifespan of low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Furthermore, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can create favorable electromagnetic environments by providing alternative signal paths to counteract blockages. The strategic integration of WPC and RIS technologies can significantly enhance energy transfer and data transmission efficiency. However, passive RISs suffer from double-fading attenuation over RIS-aided cascaded links. In this article, we propose the application of an active RIS within WPC-enabled IoT networks. The enhanced flexibility of the active RIS in terms of energy transfer and information transmission is investigated using adjustable parameters. We derive novel closed-form expressions for the ergodic rate and outage probability by incorporating key parameters, including signal amplification, active noise, power consumption, and phase quantization errors. Additionally, we explore the optimization of WPC scenarios, focusing on the time-switching factor and power consumption of the active RIS. The results validate our analysis, demonstrating that an active RIS significantly enhances WPC performance compared to a passive RIS.

We propose reflection pattern modulation-aided reconfigurable intelligent surface (RPM-RIS)-assisted cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) schemes for green uplink transmission. In our RPM-RIS-assisted CF-mMIMO system, extra information is conveyed by the indices of the active RIS blocks, exploiting the joint benefits of both RIS-assisted CF-mMIMO transmission and RPM. Since only part of the RIS blocks are active, our proposed architecture strikes a flexible energy \emph{vs.} spectral efficiency (SE) trade-off. We commence with introducing the system model by considering spatially correlated channels. Moreover, we conceive a channel estimation scheme subject to the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) constraint, yielding sufficient information for the subsequent signal processing steps. Then, upon exploiting a so-called large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) scheme, the uplink signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) is derived based on the RIS ON/OFF statistics, where both maximum ratio (MR) and local minimum mean-square error (L-MMSE) combiners are considered. By invoking the MR combiner, the closed-form expression of the uplink SE is formulated based only on the channel statistics. Furthermore, we derive the total energy efficiency (EE) of our proposed RPM-RIS-assisted CF-mMIMO system. Additionally, we propose a chaotic sequence-based adaptive particle swarm optimization (CSA-PSO) algorithm to maximize the total EE by designing the RIS phase shifts. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RPM-RIS-assisted CF-mMIMO architecture strikes an attractive SE \emph{vs.} EE trade-off, while the CSA-PSO algorithm is capable of attaining a significant EE performance gain compared to conventional solutions.

The nature of the interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies remains an unsolved question. Therefore, conducting an AGN census is valuable to AGN research. Nevertheless, a significant fraction of AGNs are obscured by their environment, which blocks UV and optical emissions due to the dusty torus surrounding the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). To overcome this challenge, mid-infrared (IR) surveys have emerged as a valuable tool for identifying obscured AGNs, as the obscured light is re-emitted in this range. With its high sensitivity, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) uncovered more fainter objects than previous telescopes. By applying the SED fitting, this work investigates AGN candidates in JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) fields. We identified 42 candidates, 30 of them are classified as composites ($0.2\leq f_{\rm AGN, IR}< 0.5$), and 12 of them are AGNs ($f_{\rm AGN, IR}\geq 0.5$). We report the AGN luminosity contributions and AGN number fractions as a function of redshift and total infrared luminosity, showing that previously reported increasing relations are not apparent in our sample due to the sample size. We also extend the previous results on ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, $L_{\rm TIR}\geq 10^{12} L_{\odot}$) to less luminous AGNs, highlighting the power of JWST.

Information theory, which describes the transmission of signals in the presence of noise, has enabled the development of reliable communication systems that underlie the modern world. Imaging systems can also be viewed as a form of communication, in which information about the object is "transmitted" through images. However, the application of information theory to imaging systems has been limited by the challenges of accounting for their physical constraints. Here, we introduce a framework that addresses these limitations by modeling the probabilistic relationship between objects and their measurements. Using this framework, we develop a method to estimate information using only a dataset of noisy measurements, without making any assumptions about the image formation process. We demonstrate that these estimates comprehensively quantify measurement quality across a diverse range of imaging systems and applications. Furthermore, we introduce Information-Driven Encoder Analysis Learning (IDEAL), a technique to optimize the design of imaging hardware for maximum information capture. This work provides new insights into the fundamental performance limits of imaging systems and offers powerful new tools for their analysis and design.

Multivariate time series (MTS) data, when sampled irregularly and asynchronously, often present extensive missing values. Conventional methodologies for MTS analysis tend to rely on temporal embeddings based on timestamps that necessitate subsequent imputations, yet these imputed values frequently deviate substantially from their actual counterparts, thereby compromising prediction accuracy. Furthermore, these methods typically fail to provide robust initial embeddings for values infrequently observed or even absent within the training set, posing significant challenges to model generalizability. In response to these challenges, we propose SCAlable Numerical Embedding (SCANE), a novel framework that treats each feature value as an independent token, effectively bypassing the need for imputation. SCANE regularizes the traits of distinct feature embeddings and enhances representational learning through a scalable embedding mechanism. Coupling SCANE with the Transformer Encoder architecture, we develop the Scalable nUMerical eMbeddIng Transformer (SUMMIT), which is engineered to deliver precise predictive outputs for MTS characterized by prevalent missing entries. Our experimental validation, conducted across three disparate electronic health record (EHR) datasets marked by elevated missing value frequencies, confirms the superior performance of SUMMIT over contemporary state-of-the-art approaches addressing similar challenges. These results substantiate the efficacy of SCANE and SUMMIT, underscoring their potential applicability across a broad spectrum of MTS data analytical tasks.

This paper investigates a joint active and passive beamforming design for distributed simultaneous transmitting and reflecting (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted multi-user (MU)- mutiple input single output (MISO) systems, where the energy splitting (ES) mode is considered for the STAR-RIS. We aim to design the active beamforming vectors at the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming at the STAR-RIS to maximize the user sum rate under transmitting power constraints. The formulated problem is non-convex and nontrivial to obtain the global optimum due to the coupling between active beamforming vectors and STAR-RIS phase shifts. To efficiently solve the problem, we propose a novel graph neural network (GNN)-based framework. Specifically, we first model the interactions among users and network entities are using a heterogeneous graph representation. A heterogeneous graph neural network (HGNN) implementation is then introduced to directly optimizes beamforming vectors and STAR-RIS coefficients with the system objective. Numerical results show that the proposed approach yields efficient performance compared to the previous benchmarks. Furthermore, the proposed GNN is scalable with various system configurations.

In this paper, we investigate a joint computation offloading and target tracking in Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network. Therein, the UAV has a computing task that is partially offloaded to the ground UE for execution. Meanwhile, the UAV uses the offloading bit sequence to estimate the velocity of a ground target based on an autocorrelation function. The performance of the velocity estimation that is represented by Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRB) depends on the length of the offloading bit sequence and the UAV's location. Thus, we jointly optimize the task size for offloading and the UAV's location to minimize the overall computation latency and the CRB of the mean square error for velocity estimation subject to the UAV's budget. The problem is non-convex, and we propose a genetic algorithm to solve it. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Mid-infrared (MIR) light from galaxies is sensitive to dust-obscured star-formation activities because it traces the characteristic emission of dust heated by young, massive stars. By constructing the MIR luminosity functions (LFs), we are able to quantify the overall dusty star formation history and the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. In this work, we report the first rest-frame MIR LFs at 7.7, 10, 12.8, 15, 18, and 21 $μ$m as well as the total IR LF from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey. We identify 506 galaxies at $z=0-5.1$ in the CEERS survey that also have optical photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope. With the unprecedented sensitivity of the JWST, we probe the faintest end of the LFs at $z=0-1$ down to $L^* \sim 10^7 L_\odot$, $\sim 2$ orders of magnitude fainter than those from the previous generation of IR space telescopes. Our findings connect well with and continue the faint end of the MIR LFs from the deepest observations in past works. As a proxy of star formation history, we present the MIR-based luminosity density up to $z\simeq4.0$, marking the first probe of the early Universe by JWST MIRI.

Both space and ground communications have been proven effective solutions under different perspectives in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. This paper investigates multiple-access scenarios, where plenty of IoT users are cooperatively served by a satellite in space and access points (APs) on the ground. Available users in each coherence interval are split into scheduled and unscheduled subsets to optimize limited radio resources. We compute the uplink ergodic throughput of each scheduled user under imperfect channel state information (CSI) and non-orthogonal pilot signals. As maximum-radio combining is deployed locally at the ground gateway and the APs, the uplink ergodic throughput is obtained in a closed-form expression. The analytical results explicitly unveil the effects of channel conditions and pilot contamination on each scheduled user. By maximizing the sum throughput, the system can simultaneously determine scheduled users and perform power allocation based on either a model-based approach with alternating optimization or a learning-based approach with the graph neural network. Numerical results manifest that integrated satellite-terrestrial cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output systems can significantly improve the sum ergodic throughput over coherence intervals. The integrated systems can schedule the vast majority of users; some might be out of service due to the limited power budget.

This paper investigates double RIS-assisted MIMO communication systems over Rician fading channels with finite scatterers, spatial correlation, and the existence of a double-scattering link between the transceiver. First, the statistical information is driven in closed form for the aggregated channels, unveiling various influences of the system and environment on the average channel power gains. Next, we study two active and passive beamforming designs corresponding to two objectives. The first problem maximizes channel capacity by jointly optimizing the active precoding and combining matrices at the transceivers and passive beamforming at the double RISs subject to the transmitting power constraint. In order to tackle the inherently non-convex issue, we propose an efficient alternating optimization algorithm (AO) based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). The second problem enhances communication reliability by jointly training the encoder and decoder at the transceivers and the phase shifters at the RISs. Each neural network representing a system entity in an end-to-end learning framework is proposed to minimize the symbol error rate of the detected symbols by controlling the transceiver and the RISs phase shifts. Numerical results verify our analysis and demonstrate the superior improvements of phase shift designs to boost system performance.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently gained significant interest as an emerging technology for future wireless networks thanks to its potential for improving the coverage probability in challenging propagation environments. This paper studies an RIS-assisted propagation environment, where a source transmits data to a destination in the presence of a weak direct link. We analyze and compare RIS designs based on long-term and short-term channel statistics in terms of coverage probability and ergodic rate. For the considered optimization designs, we derive closed-form expressions for the coverage probability and ergodic rate, which explicitly unveil the impact of both the propagation environment and the RIS on the system performance. Besides the optimization of the RIS phase profile, we formulate an RIS placement optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the coverage probability by relying only on partial channel state information. An efficient algorithm is proposed based on the gradient ascent method. Simulation results are illustrated in order to corroborate the analytical framework and findings. The proposed RIS phase profile is shown to outperform several heuristic benchmarks in terms of outage probability and ergodic rate. In addition, the proposed RIS placement strategy provides an extra degree of freedom that remarkably improves system performance.

A critical challenge in developing scalable error-corrected quantum systems is the accumulation of errors while performing operations and measurements. One promising approach is to design a system where errors can be detected and converted into erasures. Such a system utilizing erasure qubits are known to have relaxed requirements for quantum error correction. A recent proposal aims to do this using a dual-rail encoding with superconducting cavities. However, experimental characterization and demonstration of a dual-rail cavity qubit has not yet been realized. In this work, we implement such a dual-rail cavity qubit; we demonstrate a projective logical measurement with integrated erasure detection and use it to measure dual-rail qubit idling errors. We measure logical state preparation and measurement errors at the $0.01\%$-level and detect over $99\%$ of cavity decay events as erasures. We use the precision of this new measurement protocol to distinguish different types of errors in this system, finding that while decay errors occur with probability $\sim 0.2\%$ per microsecond, phase errors occur 6 times less frequently and bit flips occur at least 140 times less frequently. These findings represent the first confirmation of the expected error hierarchy necessary to concatenate dual-rail erasure qubits into a highly efficient erasure code.

A whole suite of innovative technologies and architectures have emerged in response to the rapid growth of wireless traffic. This paper studies an integrated network design that boosts system capacity through cooperation between wireless access points (APs) and a satellite for enhancing the network's spectral efficiency. We first mathematically derive an achievable throughput expression for the uplink (UL) data transmission over spatially correlated Rician channels. Our generic achievable throughput expression is applicable for arbitrary received signal detection techniques under realistic imperfect channel estimates. A closed-form expression is then obtained for the ergodic UL data throughput when maximum ratio combining is utilized for detecting the desired signals. As for our resource allocation contributions, we formulate the max-min fairness and total transmit power optimization problems relying on the channel statistics for performing power allocation. The solution of each optimization problem is derived in form of a low-complexity iterative design, in which each data power variable is updated relying on a closed-form expression. Our integrated hybrid network concept allows users to be served that may not otherwise be accommodated due to the excessive data demands. The algorithms proposed to allow us to address the congestion issues appearing when at least one user is served at a rate below the target. The mathematical analysis is also illustrated with the aid of our numerical results that show the added benefits of considering the space links in terms of improving the ergodic data throughput. Furthermore, the proposed algorithms smoothly circumvent any potential congestion, especially in face of high rate requirements and weak channel conditions.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been considered as a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks that can control wireless channels in a desirable way and significantly enhance the network performance. Simultaneous transmitting and reflecting-RISs (STAR-RISs) can overcome limitation of reflecting-only RISs by leveraging the higher design flexibility and full-space coverage. Despite the benefits, the modeling and analysis of STAR-RISs are complicated because of various control parameters for both transmission and reflection links. In this article, a general framework to facilitate the design and implementation of STAR-RISs in 6G scenarios and network topologies is presented. We provide a systematic introduction to the STAR-RIS operating protocols for different communication modes and discuss recent efforts to identify the research progress and combination solutions. Finally, we provide the design concepts, research challenges, potential solutions, and future directions related to the channel modeling, channel estimation, hardware implementations, modeling and limitations, and optimization.

Semantic communication has emerged as the breakthrough beyond the Shannon theorem by transmitting and receiving semantic information instead of data bits or symbols regardless of its content. This paper proposes a two-stage reconstruction process to boost the system's performance. In the first phase, the image information is first decoded from the noisy received data by exploiting the channel knowledge. The decoded image is enhanced by a post-filter and image statistics. Different metrics are exploited to evaluate the image restoration quality of our considered model. Numerical results are obtained using natural images that verify the superior improvements of the proposed two-stage reconstruction process over the traditional decoded data. Moreover, the different metrics assessing the system performance based on their criteria can be conflicted with each other.

This paper studies an integrated network design that boosts system capacity through cooperation between wireless access points (APs) and a satellite. By coherently combing the signals received by the central processing unit from the users through the space and terrestrial links, we mathematically derive an achievable throughput expression for the uplink (UL) data transmission over spatially correlated Rician channels. A closed-form expression is obtained when maximum ratio combining is employed to detect the desired signals. We formulate the max-min fairness and total transmit power optimization problems relying on the channel statistics to perform power allocation. The solution of each optimization problem is derived in form of a low-complexity iterative design, in which each data power variable is updated based on a closed-form expression. The mathematical analysis is validated with numerical results showing the added benefits of considering a satellite link in terms of improving the ergodic data throughput.

For multi-beam high throughput (MB-HTS) geostationary (GEO) satellite networks, the congestion appears when user's demands cannot be fully satisfied. This paper boosts the system performance by formulating and solving the power allocation strategies under the congestion control to admit users. A new multi-objective optimization is formulated to balance the sum data throughput and the satisfied user set. After that, we come up with two different solutions, which efficiently tackle the multi-objective maximization problem: The model-based solution utilizes the weighted sum method to enhance the number of demand-satisfied users, whilst the supervised learning solution offers a low-computational complexity design by inheriting optimization structures as continuous mappings. Simulation results verify that our solutions effectively copes with the congestion and outperforms the data throughput demand than the other previous works.

This work investigates the security and reliability analysis for a novel satellite-terrestrial (SatTer) network. Specifically, a satellite attempts to transmit confidential information to a ground user (GU) via the support of multiple relay nodes in the presence of an eavesdropper that tries to overhear the information. A friendly jammer is deployed to improve the secure transmission between the satellite and the relays. Furthermore, satellite-to-relay generalized Rician fading channels and imperfect channel state information (CSI) are deployed to examine a general system model. In this context, the closed-formed expressions for the outage probability (OP) and intercept probability (IP) are derived corresponding to an amplify-and-forward (AF)-based relaying scheme, which is challenging and has not been studied before. Finally, the exactness of the mathematical analyses is validated through Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, the effects of various key parameters (e.g., channel estimation errors, satellite's transmit power, relay's transmit power, number of relays, and fading severity parameter) are examined.

Quantum parametric amplifiers typically generate by operating in proximity to a point of dynamical instability. We consider an alternate general strategy where quantum-limited, large-gain amplification is achieved without any proximity to a dynamical instability. Our basic mechanism (involving dynamics that conserves the number of squeezed photons) enables the design of a variety of one and two mode amplifiers that are not limited by any fundamental gain-bandwidth constraint. We focus on a particular realization that allows us to realize an ideal single-mode squeezing operation in transmission, and which has zero reflection. We present both a thorough theoretical analysis of this system (including pump-depletion effects), and also discuss results of an experimental superconducting quantum circuit implementation.

Non-geostationary (Non-GSO) satellite constellations have emerged as a promising solution to enable ubiquitous high-speed low-latency broadband services by generating multiple spot-beams placed on the ground according to the user locations. However, there is an inherent trade-off between the number of active beams and the complexity of generating a large number of beams. This paper formulates and solves a joint beam placement and load balancing problem to carefully optimize the satellite beam and enhance the link budgets with a minimal number of active beams. We propose a two-stage algorithm design to overcome the combinatorial structure of the considered optimization problem providing a solution in polynomial time. The first stage minimizes the number of active beams, while the second stage performs a load balancing to distribute users in the coverage area of the active beams. Numerical results confirm the benefits of the proposed methodology both in carrier-to-noise ratio and multiplexed users per beam over other benchmarks.

This paper considers reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted point-to-point multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, where a transmitter communicates with a receiver through an RIS. Based on the main target of reducing the bit error rate (BER) and therefore enhancing the communication reliability, we study different model-based and data-driven (autoencoder) approaches. In particular, we consider a model-based approach that optimizes both active and passive optimization variables. We further propose a novel end-to-end data-driven framework, which leverages the recent advances in machine learning. The neural networks presented for conventional signal processing modules are jointly trained with the channel effects to minimize the bit error detection. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed data-driven approach can learn to encode the transmitted signal via different channel realizations dynamically. In addition, the data-driven approach not only offers a significant gain in the BER performance compared to the other state-of-the-art benchmarks but also guarantees the performance when perfect channel information is unavailable.

Radio-frequency (RF) energy harvesting (EH) in wireless relaying networks has attracted considerable recent interest, especially for supplying energy to relay nodes in Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems to assist the information exchange between a source and a destination. Moreover, limited hardware, computational resources, and energy availability of IoT devices have raised various security challenges. To this end, physical layer security (PLS) has been proposed as an effective alternative to cryptographic methods for providing information security. In this study, we propose a PLS approach for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)-based half-duplex (HD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying systems in the presence of an eavesdropper. Furthermore, we take into account both static power splitting relaying (SPSR) and dynamic power splitting relaying (DPSR) to thoroughly investigate the benefits of each one. To further enhance secure communication, we consider multiple friendly jammers to help prevent wiretapping attacks from the eavesdropper. More specifically, we provide a reliability and security analysis by deriving closed-form expressions of outage probability (OP) and intercept probability (IP), respectively, for both the SPSR and DPSR schemes. Then, simulations are also performed to validate our analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Specifically, numerical results illustrate the non-trivial trade-off between reliability and security of the proposed system. In addition, we conclude from the simulation results that the proposed DPSR scheme outperforms the SPSR-based scheme in terms of OP and IP under the influences of different parameters on system performance.

For downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) operating in time-division duplex protocol, users can decode the signals effectively by only utilizing the channel statistics as long as channel hardening holds. However, in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted massive MIMO system, the propagation channels may be less hardened due to the extra random fluctuations of the effective channel gains. To address this issue, we propose a learning-based method that trains a neural network to learn a mapping between the received downlink signal and the effective channel gains. The proposed method does not require any downlink pilots and statistical information of interfering users. Numerical results show that, in terms of mean-square error of the channel estimation, our proposed learning-based method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, especially when the light-of-sight (LoS) paths are dominated by non-LoS paths with a low level of channel hardening, e.g., in the cases of small numbers of RIS elements and/or base station antennas.

We present a new velocity map imaging instrument for studying molecular beam surface scattering in a near-ambient pressure (NAP-VMI) environment. The instrument offers the possibility to study chemical reaction dynamics and kinetics where higher pressures are either desired or unavoidable. NAP-VMI conditions are created by two sets of ion optics that guide ions through an aperture and map their velocities. The aperture separates the high pressure ionization region and maintains the necessary vacuum in the detector region. The performance of the NAP-VMI is demonstrated with results from N$_2$O photodissociation and N$_2$ scattering from Pd(110) surface, which are compared under vacuum and at near-ambient pressure ($ 1\times10^{-3} $ mbar). NAP-VMI has the potential to be a applied to, and useful for, a broader range of experiments including photoelectron spectroscopy and scattering with liquid microjets.

For extensive coverage areas, multi-beam high throughput satellite (MB-HTS) communication is a promising technology that plays a crucial role in delivering broadband services to many users with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper focuses on MB-HTS systems where all beams reuse the same spectrum. In particular, we propose a novel user scheduling and power allocation design capable of providing guarantees in terms of the individual QoS requirements while maximizing the system throughput under a limited power budget. Precoding is employed in the forward link to mitigate mutual interference at the users in multiple-access scenarios over different coherence time intervals. The combinatorial optimization structure from user scheduling requires an extremely high cost to obtain the global optimum even when a reduced number of users fit into a time slot. Therefore, we propose a heuristic algorithm yielding good trade-off between performance and computational complexity, applicable to a static operation framework of geostationary (GEO) satellite networks. Although the power allocation optimization is signomial programming, non-convex on a standard form, the solution can be lower bounded by the global optimum of a geometric program with a hidden convex structure. A local solution to the joint user scheduling and power allocation problem is consequently obtained by a successive optimization approach. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms on large-scale systems by providing better QoS satisfaction combined with outstanding overall system throughput.

One of the primary challenges in realizing large-scale quantum processors is the realization of qubit couplings that balance interaction strength, connectivity, and mode confinement. Moreover, it is very desirable for the device elements to be detachable, allowing components to be built, tested, and replaced independently. In this work, we present a microwave quantum state router, centered on parametrically driven, Josephson-junction based three-wave mixing, that realizes all-to-all couplings among four detachable quantum modules. We demonstrate coherent exchange among all four communication modes, with an average full-iSWAP time of 764ns and average inferred inter-module exchange fidelity of 0.969, limited by mode coherence. We also demonstrate photon transfer and pairwise entanglement between module qubits, and parallel operation of simultaneous iSWAP exchange across the router. Our router-module architecture serves as a prototype of modular quantum computer that has great potential for enabling flexible, demountable, large-scale quantum networks of superconducting qubits and cavities.

Distributed maximum-ratio combining (MRC) is considered at the access points (APs). We introduce an aggregated channel estimation method that provides sufficient information for data processing. The considered system is studied by using asymptotic analysis which lets the number of APs and/or the number of RIS elements grow large. A lower bound for the channel capacity is obtained for a finite number of APs and engineered scattering elements of the RIS, and closed-form expression for the uplink ergodic net throughput is formulated. In addition, a simple scheme for controlling the configuration of the RIS scattering elements is proposed. We study downlink (DL) channel estimation in a multi-cell Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system operating in a time-division duplex. The users must know their effective channel gains to decode their received DL data signals. A common approach is to use the mean value as the estimate, motivated by channel hardening, but this is associated with a substantial performance loss in non-isotropic scattering environments. We propose two novel estimation methods. The first method is model-aided and utilizes asymptotic arguments to identify a connection between the effective channel gain and the average received power during a coherence block. The second one is a deep-learning-based approach that uses a neural network to identify a mapping between the available information and the effective channel gain. We compare the proposed methods against other benchmarks in terms of normalized mean-squared error and spectral efficiency (SE). The proposed methods provide substantial improvements, with the learning-based solution being the best of the considered estimators.

High-throughput satellite communication systems are growing in strategic importance thanks to their role in delivering broadband services to mobile platforms and residences and/or businesses in rural and remote regions globally. Although precoding has emerged as a prominent technique to meet ever-increasing user demands, there is a lack of studies dealing with congestion control. This paper enhances the performance of multi-beam high throughput geostationary satellite systems under congestion, where the users' quality of service (QoS) demands cannot be fully satisfied with limited resources. In particular, we propose congestion control strategies, relying on simple power control schemes. We formulate a multi-objective optimization framework balancing the system sum-rate and the number of users satisfying their QoS requirements. Next, we propose two novel approaches that effectively handle the proposed multi-objective optimization problem. The former is a model-based approach that relies on the weighted sum method to enrich the number of satisfied users by solving a series of the sum-rate optimization problems in an iterative manner. The latter is a data-driven approach that offers a low-cost solution by utilizing supervised learning and exploiting the optimization structures as continuous mappings. The proposed general framework is evaluated for different linear precoding techniques, for which the low computational complexity algorithms are designed. Numerical results manifest that our proposed framework effectively handles the congestion issue and brings superior improvements of rate satisfaction to many users than previous works. Furthermore, the proposed algorithms show low run-time and make them realistic for practical systems.

Without requiring additional frequency bands, those technologies offer significant improvements in both spectral and energy efficiency by simultaneously serving many users. The performance analysis of an RIS-assisted Massive MIMO system as a function of the channel statistics relies heavily on fundamental properties including favorable propagation, channel hardening, and rank deficiency. The coexistence of both direct and indirect links results in aggregated channels, whose properties are the main concerns of this lecture note. This paper proposes a flexible pilot assignment method to jointly optimize the uplink and downlink data transmission in multi-cell Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems with correlated Rayleigh fading channels. By utilizing a closed-form expression of the ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) achieved with maximum ratio processing, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the minimum weighted sum of the uplink and downlink SEs subject to the transmit powers and pilot assignment sets. This combinatiorial optimization problem is solved by two sequential algorithms: a heuristic pilot assignment is first proposed to obtain a good pilot reuse set and the data power control is then implemented. Multibeam high throughput satellite (MB-HTS) systems will play a key role in delivering broadband services to a large number of users with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper focuses on MB-HTS where the same spectrum is re-used by all user links and, in particular, we propose a novel user scheduling design capable to provide guarantees in terms of individual QoS requirements while maximizing the system throughput. This is achieved by precoding to mitigate mutual interference. The combinatorial optimization structure requires an extremely high cost to obtain the global optimum even with a reduced number of users. We, therefore, propose a heuristic algorithm yielding a good local solution and tolerable computational complexity, applicable for large-scale networks. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm on scheduling many users with better sum throughput than the other benchmarks. Besides, the QoS requirements for all scheduled users are guaranteed.

We study downlink channel estimation in a multi-cell Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system operating in time-division duplex. The users must know their effective channel gains to decode their received downlink data. Previous works have used the mean value as the estimate, motivated by channel hardening. However, this is associated with a performance loss in non-isotropic scattering environments. We propose two novel estimation methods that can be applied without downlink pilots. The first method is model-based and asymptotic arguments are utilized to identify a connection between the effective channel gain and the average received power during a coherence interval. The second method is data-driven and trains a neural network to identify a mapping between the available information and the effective channel gain. Both methods can be utilized for any channel distribution and precoding. For the model-aided method, we derive all expressions in closed form for the case when maximum ratio or zero-forcing precoding is used. We compare the proposed methods with the state-of-the-art using the normalized mean-squared error and spectral efficiency (SE). The results suggest that the two proposed methods provide better SE than the state-of-the-art when there is a low level of channel hardening, while the performance difference is relatively small with the uncorrelated channel model.

Cell-Free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for application to beyond-5G networks. This paper considers Cell-Free Massive MIMO systems with the assistance of an RIS for enhancing the system performance under the presence of spatial correlation among the engineered scattering elements of the RIS. Distributed maximum-ratio processing is considered at the access points (APs). We introduce an aggregated channel estimation approach that provides sufficient information for data processing with the main benefit of reducing the overhead required for channel estimation. The considered system is studied by using asymptotic analysis which lets the number of APs and/or the number of RIS elements grow large. A lower bound for the channel capacity is obtained for a finite number of APs and engineered scattering elements of the RIS, and closed-form expressions for the uplink and downlink ergodic net throughput are formulated in terms of only the channel statistics. Based on the obtained analytical frameworks, we unveil the impact of channel correlation, the number of RIS elements, and the pilot contamination on the net throughput of each user. In addition, a simple control scheme for optimizing the configuration of the engineered scattering elements of the RIS is proposed, which is shown to increase the channel estimation quality, and, hence, the system performance. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system design and performance analysis. In particular, the performance benefits of using RISs in Cell-Free Massive MIMO systems are confirmed, especially if the direct links between the APs and the users are of insufficient quality with high probability.

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for improving the spectral and energy efficiency in 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. For a tractable analysis, most of the previous works on Massive MIMO have been focused on the system performance with complex Gaussian channel impulse responses under rich-scattering environments. In contrast, this paper investigates the uplink ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) of each user under the double scattering channel model. We derive a closed-form expression of the uplink ergodic SE by exploiting the maximum ratio (MR) combining technique based on imperfect channel state information. We further study the asymptotic SE behaviors as a function of the number of antennas at each base station (BS) and the number of scatterers available at each radio channel. We then formulate and solve a total energy optimization problem for the uplink data transmission that aims at simultaneously satisfying the required SEs from all the users with limited data power resource. Notably, our proposed algorithms can cope with the congestion issue appearing when at least one user is served by lower SE than requested. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the closed-form ergodic SE over Monte-Carlo simulations. Besides, the system can still provide the required SEs to many users even under congestion.

In particular, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the outage probability for arbitrary phase shifts and correlation matrices of the indirect channels. To shed light on the impact of the spatial correlation, we further attain the closed-form expressions for two common scenarios met in the literature when the large-scale fading coefficients are expressed by the loss over a propagation distance. Numerical results validate the tightness and effectiveness of the closed-form expressions. Furthermore, the spatial correlation offers significant decreases in the outage probability as the direct channel is blocked.

Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) has demonstrated as a potential candidate for 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. Instead of using Gaussian signals as most of the previous works, this paper makes a novel contribution by investigating the transmission quality of image data by utilizing the Massive MIMO technology. We first construct a framework to decode the image signal from the noisy received data in the uplink Massive MIMO transmission by utilizing the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. Then, a low-pass filter is exploited to enhance the efficiency of the remaining noise and artifacts reduction in the recovered image. Numerical results demonstrate the necessity of a post-filtering process in enhancing the quality of image recovery.

In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation method with the assistance of deep learning in order to support the least squares estimation, which is a low-cost method but having relatively high channel estimation errors. This goal is achieved by utilizing a MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system with a multi-path channel profile used for simulations in the 5G networks under the severity of Doppler effects. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed deep learning-assisted channel estimation method over the other channel estimation methods in previous works in terms of mean square errors.

This paper studies the performance of a single-input single-output (SISO) system enhanced by the assistance of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), which is equipped with a finite number of elements under Rayleigh fading channels. From the instantaneous channel capacity, we compute a closed-form expression of the coverage probability as a function of statistical channel information only. A scaling law of the coverage probability and the number of phase shifts is further obtained. The ergodic capacity is derived, then a simple upper bound to simplify matters of utilizing the symbolic functions and can be applied for a long period of time. Numerical results manifest the tightness and effectiveness of our closed-form expressions compared with Monte-Carlo simulations.

Fault-tolerant quantum information processing with flawed qubits and gates requires highly efficient, quantum non-demolition (QND) qubit readout. In superconducting circuits, qubit readout using coherent light with fidelity above 99% has been achieved by using quantum-limited parametric amplifiers such as the Josephson Parametric Converter (JPC). However, further improvement of such measurement is fundamentally limited by the vacuum fluctuations of the coherent light used for readout. In this work we measure a transmon qubit/cavity system with an unbalanced two-mode squeezed light interferometer formed from two JPCs. The first amplifier generates two-mode squeezed vacuum at its output, which is coherently recombined by the second amplifier after one branch is shifted and displaced by the transmon's state after it interacts with the qubit/cavity system on one arm of the interferometer. We have observed a 31% improvement in power Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of projective readout compared to that of coherent light readout in the same system. To investigate the quantum properties of the two-mode squeezed light in the system, we also studied weak measurement and found, surprisingly, that tuning the interferometer to be as unprojective as possible was associated with an increase in the quantum efficiency of our readout relative to the optimum setting for projective measurement. These enhancements may enable remote entanglement with lower efficiency components in a system with qubits in both arms of the interferometer.

The current work covers the evaluation of ultrasonic and electromagnetic (EM) techniques applied to temperature measurement and flow characterization for Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS). We have evaluated both ultrasonic techniques and microwave radiometry for temperature gradient and profile measurements. A waveguide-based ultrasonic probe was developed to measure the temperature gradient. A statistic approach on estimating the average grain size via spectral analysis of the scattered ultrasonic signals is introduced. For directional temperature measurement, different microwave antenna designs are compared numerically and an array loop antenna design is selected for further development. Finally techniques to characterize the porosity and permeability of a hot dry rock resource are presented.
