We present the investigations on atomic dynamics and Li+ diffusion in crystalline and amorphous Li2Si2O5 using quasielastic (QENS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies supplemented by ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD). The QENS measurements in the amorphous phase of Li2Si2O5 show a narrow temperature window (700 < T < 775 K), exhibiting significant quasielastic broadening corresponding to the fast Li+ diffusion and relaxation of SiO4 units to the crystalline phase. Our INS measurements clearly show the presence of large phonon density of states (PDOS) at low energy (low-E) in the superionic amorphous phase, which disappear in the non-superionic crystalline phase, corroborating the role of low-E modes in Li+ diffusion. The frustrated energy landscape and host flexibility (due to random orientation and vibrational motion of SiO4 polyhedral units) play an essential role in diffusing the Li+. We used AIMD simulations to identify that these low-E modes involve a large amplitude of Li vibrations coupled with SiO4 vibrations in the amorphous phase. At elevated temperatures, these vibrational dynamics accelerate the Li+ diffusion via a paddle-wheel like coupling mechanism. Above 775 K, these SiO4 vibrational dynamics drive the system into the crystalline phase by locking SiO4 and Li+ into deeper minima of the free energy landscape and disappear in the crystalline phase. Both experiments and simulations provide valuable information about the atomic level stochastic and vibrational dynamics in Li2Si2O5 and their role in Li+ diffusion and vitrification.

Cu2Se and Cu2S are excellent model systems of superionic conductors with large diffusion coefficients that have been reported to exhibit different solid-liquid-like Cu-ion diffusion. In this paper, we clarify the atomic dynamics of these compounds with temperature-dependent ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. Using the dynamical structure factor and Van-Hove correlation function, we interrogate the jump-time, hopping length distribution and associated diffusion coefficients. In cubic-Cu2Se at 500 K, we find solid-like diffusion with Cu-jump lengths matching well the first-neighbour Cu-Cu distance of ~3 Å in the crystal, and clearly defined optic phonons involving Cu-vibrations. Above 700 K, the jump-length distribution becomes a broad maximum cantered around 4 Å, spanning the first and second neighbour lattice distances, and a concurrent broadening of the Cu-phonon density of states. Further, above 900 K, the Cu-diffusion becomes close to liquid-like, with distributions of Cu-atoms continuously connecting crystal sites, while the vibrational modes involving Cu motions are highly damped, though still not fully over-damped as in a liquid. At low temperatures, the solid-like diffusion is consistent with previous X-ray diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, while the higher-temperature observation of the liquid-like diffusion is in agreement with previous AIMD simulations. We also report AIMD simulations in Cu2S in the hexagonal and cubic superionic phases, and observe similar solid and liquid-like diffusion at low- and high-temperatures, respectively. The calculated ionic-conductivity is in fair agreement with reported experimental values.

By means of diffuse and inelastic x-ray scattering (DS,IXS), we probe directly the charge-ordering (CO) dynamics in the Verwey system (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, where a peculiar quadruple perovskite structure with no oxygen disorder stabilizes a nearly full Mn$^{3+}$/Mn$^{4+}$ static charge order at $T_{\rm CO}$=175 K concomitant to a commensurate structural modulation with propagation vector ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}=(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},0)$. At $T_{\rm CO}$, the IXS spectra unveil a softening of a 35.3 meV phonon at ${\bf q}_{\rm CO}$. Lattice dynamical calculations enable us to attribute this soft phonon to a A$_g$ mode whose polarization matches the Jahn-Teller-like distortion pattern of the structural modulation. This result demonstrates that the Jahn-Teller instability is the driving force of the CO Verwey transition in (NaMn$_3$)Mn$_4$O$_{12}$, thus elucidating a long-standing controversy regarding the mechanism of this transition observed in other mixed-valence systems like magnetite.

The QENS data show that the Na atoms undergo localized jumps up to 1173 K. The ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations supplement the measurements and show 1-d long-ranged diffusion along the a-axis above 1500 K. The simulations indicate that the occupancy of the interstitial site is critical for long-range diffusion. The nudged-elastic-band (NEB) calculation confirmed that the activation energy barrier is lowest for diffusion along the a-axis. In the experimental phonon spectra the peaks at 10 and 14 meV are dominated by Na dynamics that disappear on warming, suggesting low-energy phonons significantly contribute to large Na vibrational amplitude at elevated temperatures that enhances the Na hopping probability. We have also calculated the mode Grüneisen parameters of the phonons and thereby calculated the volume thermal expansion coefficient, which is found to be in excellent agreement with available experimental data.

The AIMD simulation supplemented the QENS measurements and showed that excess Na ions in H-NASO enhance the host network flexibility and activate the AlO4/SiO4 tetrahedra rotational modes. These framework modes enable the long-range diffusion of Na across a pathway of interstitial sites. The simulations also show Na diffusion in Na-deficient N-NASO through vacant Na sites along the hexagonal c-axis.

We have performed ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the mechanism of the phase transition at high pressure from hexagonal graphite (HG) to hexagonal diamond (HD) or to cubic diamond (CD). The transition from HG to HD is found to occur swiftly in very small time of 0.2 ps, with large cooperative displacements of all the atoms. We observe that alternate layers of atoms in HG slide in opposite directions by (1/3, 1/6, 0) and (-1/3, -1/6, 0), respectively, which is about 0.7 Å along the pm[2, 1, 0] direction, while simultaneously puckering by about pm0.25 Å perpendicular to the a-b plane. The transition from HG to CD occurred with more complex cooperative displacements. In this case, six successive HG layers slide in pairs by 1/3 along [0, 1, 0], [-1, -1, 0] and [1, 0, 0], respectively along with the puckering as above. We have also performed calculations of the phonon spectrum in HG at high pressure, which reveal soft phonon modes that may facilitate the phase transition involving the sliding and puckering of the HG layers. The zero-point vibrational energy and the vibrational entropy are found to have important role in stabilizing HG up to higher pressures (>10 GPa) and temperatures than that estimated (<6 GPa) from previous enthalpy calculations.

Structural as well as magnetization studies have been carried out on graphite samples irradiated by neutrons over 50 years in the CIRUS research reactor at Trombay. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that the defects in irradiated graphite samples are not well annealed and remain significant up to high temperatures much greater than 653 K where the Wigner energy is completely released. We infer that the remnant defects may be intralayer Frenkel defects, which do not store large energy, unlike the interlayer Frenkel defects that store the Wigner energy. Magnetization studies on the irradiated graphite show ferromagnetic behavior even at 300 K and a large additional paramagnetic contribution at 5 K. Ab-initio calculations based on the spin-polarized density-functional theory show that the magnetism in defected graphite is essentially confined on to a single 2-coordinated carbon atom that is located around a vacancy in the hexagonal layer.

We find that phonon modes related to Li vibrations broaden on warming as reflected in the measured phonon DOS and reproduced in simulations. Further, the AIMD simulations probe the nature of lithium diffusion in the perfect crystalline phase (γ-LiAlO$_2$), as well as in a structure with lithium vacancies and a related amorphous phase. Almost liquid-like super-ionic diffusion is observed in AIMD simulations of the three structures at high temperatures; with predicted onset temperatures of 1800 K, 1200 K, and 600 K in the perfect structure, vacancy structure and the amorphous phase, respectively. In the ideal structure, the Li atoms show correlated jumps; while simple and correlated jumps are both seen in the vacancy structure, and a mix of jumps and continuous diffusion occur in the amorphous structure. Further, we find that the Li-diffusion is favored in all cases by a large librational amplitude of the neighbouring AlO4 tetrahedra, and that the amorphous structure opens additional diffusion pathways due to a broad distribution of AlO4 tetrahedra orientations.

We have investigated the anisotropic thermal expansion of graphite using ab-initio calculation of lattice dynamics and anharmonicity of the phonons, which reveal that the negative thermal expansion (NTE) in the a-b plane below 600 K and very large positive thermal expansion along the c-axis up to high temperatures arise due to various phonons polarized along the c-axis. While the NTE arises from the anharmonicity of transverse phonons over a broad energy range up to 60 meV, the large positive expansion along the c-axis occurs largely due to the longitudinal optic phonon modes around 16 meV and a large linear compressibility along the c-axis. The hugely anisotropic bonding in graphite is found to be responsible for wide difference in the energy range of the transverse and longitudinal phonon modes polarized along the c-axis, which are responsible for the anomalous thermal expansion behavior. This behaviour is in contrast to other nearly isotropic hexagonal structures like water-ice, which show anomalous thermal expansion in a small temperature range arising from a narrow energy range of phonons.

We report detailed temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and ab-initio lattice dynamics investigation of magnetic perovskites YCrO3 and LaCrO3. The magnetic neutron scattering from the Cr ions exhibits significant changes with temperature and dominates at low momentum transfer regime. Ab-inito calculations performed including magnetic interactions show that the effect of magnetic interaction is very signicant on the low- as well as high-energy phonon modes. We have also shown that the inelastic neutron spectrum of YCrO3 mimics the magnon spectrum from a G-type antiferromagnetic system, which is consistent with previously reported magnetic structure in the compound. The ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations in both the compounds exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion behaviour in the orthorhombic structure and predict negative thermal expansion along the crystallographic a-axis at low temperatures. We identify the anharmonic phonon modes responsible for this anamolous behaviour in LaCrO3 involving low-energy La vibrations and distortions of the CrO6 octahedra.

Graphite has been used as neutron moderator or reflector in many nuclear reactors. The irradiation of graphite in a nuclear reactor results in a complex population of defects. Heating of the irradiated graphite at high temperatures results in annihilation of the defects with release of an unusually large energy, called the Wigner energy. From various experiments on highly irradiated graphite samples from CIRUS reactor at Trombay and ab-initio simulations, we have for the first time identified various 2-, 3- and 4-coordinated topological structures in defected graphite, and provided microscopic mechanism of defect annihilation on heating and release of the Wigner energy. The annihilation process involves cascading cooperative movement of atoms in two steps involving an intermediate structure. Our work provides new insights in understanding of the defect topologies and annihilation in graphite which is of considerable importance to wider areas of graphitic materials including graphene and carbon nanotubes.

We report investigation of phonons and oxygen diffusion in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3. Ab-initio calculations have been used to compute the individual contributions of the constituent atoms in Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 to the total phonon density of states. Our computed results indicate that as temperature is increased, there is a complete loss of sharp peak structure in the vibrational density of states. Ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations show that even at 1000 K in δ-phase Bi2O3, Bi-Bi correlations remain ordered in the crystalline lattice while the correlations between O-O show liquid like disordered behavior. In the case of (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3, the O-O correlations broadened at around 500 K indicating that oxygen conductivity is possible at such low temperatures in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 although the conductivity is much less than that observed in the undoped high temperature δ-phase of Bi2O3. This result is consistent with the calculated diffusion coefficients of oxygen and observation by QENS experiments. Our ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations predict that macroscopic diffusion is attainable in (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3 at much lower temperatures, which is more suited for technological applications. Our studies elucidate the easy directions of diffusion in δ-Bi2O3 and (Bi0.7Y0.3)2O3.

We have employed quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) technique in the amorphous Na2Si2O5 from 300 to 748 K to understand the diffusion pathways and relaxation timescales of Na atom dynamics. The microscopic analysis of the QENS data has been performed using ab-initio and classical molecular dynamics simulations (MD) to understand the Na-ion diffusion in the amorphous phase. Our experimental studies show that the traditional model, such as the Hall and Ross (H-R) model, fairly well describe the diffusion in the amorphous phase giving a mean jump length of ~3 Å and residence time about 9.1 picoseconds. Our MD simulations have indicated that the diffusion of Na+ ions occurs in the amorphous phase of Na2Si2O5 while that is not observed in the crystalline orthorhombic phase even up to 1100 K. The MD simulations have revealed that in the amorphous phase, due to different orientations of silicon polyhedral units, accessible pathways are opened up for Na+ diffusions. These pathways are not available in the crystalline phase of Na2Si2O5 due to rigid spatial arrangement of silicon polyhedral units.

Metal Chalcogenides have been known for important technological applications and have attracted continuous interest in their structure, electronic, thermal and transport properties. Here we present first principles calculations of the vibrational and thermodynamic properties of NiX (X = S, Se, Te) compounds along with inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon spectrum in NiSe. The measured phonon spectrum is in very good agreement with the computed result. We also report the measurement of thermal expansion behavior of NiSe using X-ray diffraction from 13 K to 300 K. The change in the hexagonal c lattice parameter in NiSe is considerably greater as compared to a parameter. The ab-initio calculated anisotropic Grüneisen parameters of the different phonon modes in all the chalcogenides along with the elastic constants are used to compute anisotropic thermal expansion behviour, which is found in good agreement with experiments. The displacement pattern of phonons indicate that difference in amplitudes of Ni and X atoms follow the anisotropy of thermal expansion behavior along c- and a-axis.

The orthovanadates are useful as host matrices for immobilization of radioactive wastes. The thermodynamic stability of these materials is crucial for their applications in high pressure and temperatures environment. It is necessary to investigate the phonons in the entire Brillouin zone, beyond the zone-centre phonons accessible in previous Raman and infrared experiments. We have carried out extensive neutron inelastic scattering experiments to derive the phonon dispersion relation of YVO4 up to high energy transfer of 65 meV using a single crystal, which are perhaps reported for the first time in any orthovanadate compound. The measured phonon dispersion relation is in good agreement with our first principles density functional theory as well as shell model calculations. The calculated pressure dependence of phonon modes in the zircon and scheelite phases shows unstable modes and violation of the Born stability criteria at high pressure, which may be lead to instability in YVO4 at high pressures. We also calculate large anisotropy in the thermal expansion behavior which arises from difference in anisotropic elasticity and mode Grüneisen parameters.

We identify the crucial low energy phonon modes involving translations, rotations and distortions of WO4 and ZrO6 polyhedra, which lead to NTE in ZrW2O8 in pure and ammoniated forms; however, the rotation and distortion motions get inhibited on hydration and lead to positive thermal expansion. We demonstrate that the thermal expansion coefficient could be tailored by engineering the phonon dynamics of a material.

We have carried out systematic temperature-dependent neutron diffraction measurements in conjunction with dielectric spectroscopy from 6 to 300 K for sodium niobate based compounds (1-x) NaNbO3 -xBaTiO3 (NNBTx). The dielectric constant is measured both as a function of temperature and frequency. It shows an anomaly at different temperatures in cooling and heating cycles and exhibits a large thermal hysteresis of 150 K for the composition x=0.03. The dielectric constant is found to be dispersive in nature and suggests a relaxor ferroelectric behavior. In order to explore structural changes as a function of temperature, we analyzed the powder neutron diffraction data for the composition x=0.03 and 0.05, respectively. Drastic changes are observed in the powder profiles near 30.6°, 32.1° and 34.6° in the diffraction pattern below 200 K during cooling and above 190 K in heating cycles, respectively. The disappearance of superlattice reflection and splitting in main perovskite peaks provide a signature for structural phase transition. We observed stabilization of a monoclinic phase (Cc) at low temperature. This monoclinic phase is believed to provide a flexible polarization rotation and considered to be directly linked to the high performance piezoelectricity in materials. The thermal hysteresis for composition x=0.03 is larger than x=0.05. This suggests that addition of BaTiO3 in NaNbO3 suppresses the thermal hysteresis. It is also observed that the structural phase transition temperature decreases on increasing dopant concentration.

The van der Waals dispersion interactions are found to play an important role in structural optimization and stabilization of this compound. Our ab-initio calculations show negative linear compressibility (NLC) along the c-axis of the unit cell. The ab-initio lattice dynamics as well as the molecular dynamics simulations show large negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis. The mechanism of NLC and NTE along the c-axis of the structure is governed by the dynamics of Ag atoms in the a-b plane. The NLC along the c-axis drives the NTE along that direction.

We have used ab-initio density functional theory technique to understand the phase transitions and structural changes in various high temperature/pressure phases of LiAlO2. The electronic band structure as well as phonon spectra are calculated for various phases as a function of pressure. The phonon entropy used for the calculations of Gibbs free energy is found to play an important role in the phase stability and phase transitions among various phases. A sudden increase in the polyhedral bond lengths (Li/Al-O) signifies the change from the tetrahedral to octahedral geometry at high-pressure phase transitions. The activation energy barrier for the high-pressure phase transitions is calculated. The phonon modes responsible for the phase transition (upon heating) from high pressure phases to ambient pressure phases are identified. Moreover, ab-initio lattice dynamics calculations in the framework of quasi-harmonic approximations are used to calculate the anisotropic thermal expansion behavior of γ-LiAlO2.

We present ab-initio lattice dynamical studies on the metal fluorides (CaZrF6, MgZrF6 and SrZrF6) and identify the anharmonic phonon modes responsible for the negative thermal expansion in these materials. These phonons involve ZrF6 polyhedral rotational motion, which leads to large transverse amplitude of the vibrations of the fluorine atom in the Zr-F-Zr bond. The compounds with larger anisotropy in the thermal amplitude of the fluorine atoms show larger NTE behaviour. This has enabled to understand the large variation in thermal expansion behaviour of these compounds at high temperature. The calculations also predict decrease of the frequency of these anharmonic phonons with increasing temperature.

We also performed density functional theory calculations of the lattice dynamics. The anomalous expansion is quantitatively reproduced from the analysis of the neutron data as well as from the ab-initio calculations. Further, the ab-initio calculations are used to visualize the nature of anharmonic phonons across a large part of the Brillouin zone. We find that the negative thermal expansion below 60 K in the hexagonal plane is due to anharmonic librational motion of the hexagonal rings of the ice molecules, and that along the hexagonal axis originates from the transverse vibrations of the hexagonal layers.

We have performed ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations of $β$- Eucryptite to study the origin of high temperature superionic phase transition in this material. The simulations are able to provide the microscopic understanding of the one -dimensional superionicity that occurs along the hexagonal c-axis and is associated with the order-disorder nature of the phase transition. The Li ionic conductivity is found to enhance due to the anisotropic negative thermal expansion along hexagonal c-axis. The introduction of defects in the crystal like, excess Li in interstitial sites, Li vacancy and O vacancy are found to significantly increase the ionic conductivity and hence might reduce the temperature of the superionic phase transition in this material.

Anomalous thermal expansion behaviour of several open frame-work compounds has been extensively investigated using the techniques of inelastic neutron scattering and lattice dynamics. These compounds involve increasing level of structural complexity and flexibility, which leads to increased values of thermal expansion coefficients approaching colossal values. In several compounds, neutron inelastic scattering experiments have produced quantitative estimates of the anharmonicity of phonons over a range of low energies, and thereby explained the observed thermal expansion quantitatively. The anharmonicity is found to be an order of magnitude larger than that in usual materials. Lattice dynamical calculations have correctly predicted the observed anharmonicity in the neutron experiments and revealed the overall nature of phonons involved. In compounds showing negative thermal expansion, the phonons responsible have rather low energies up to 10 meV. In most compounds, the anharmonic phonons span all over the Brillouin zone, while in some cases the specific phonons are limited to certain wave-vectors. The nature of specific phonons responsible for anomalous behavior is found to be different in all these compounds. These phonons generally involve transverse vibrations, librations and internal distortions of the polyhedral units. The paper reviews recent advances in the understanding of anomalous thermal expansion behaviour.

We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point at the Brillouin zone boundary and its coupling with a zone-centre phonon and an M-point phonon in the ambient pressure phase. Although the phase transition is primarily driven by a L-point soft phonon mode, which usually leads to a second order transition with a 2 x 2 x 2 supercell, in the present case the structure is close to an elastic instability that leads to a weakly first order transition.

We provide experimental evidence for confinement of water molecules in the pores of hexagonal structure of YPO4 at elevated temperatures upto 600 K using powder neutron diffraction. In order to avoid the large incoherent scattering from the hydrogen, deuterated samples of doped YPO4:Ce-Eu were used for diffraction measurements. The presence of water molecules in the triangular and hexagonal pores in the hexagonal structure was established by detailed simulation of the diffraction pattern and Rietveld refinement of the experimental data. It was observed that the presence of water leads specifically to suppression of the intensity of a peak around Q = 1.04 Å-1while the intensity of peaks around Q=1.83Å-1 is enhanced in the neutron diffraction pattern. We estimate the number of water molecules as 2.36 (6) per formula units at 300 K and the sizes of the hexagonal and triangular pores as7.2 (1) Å and 4.5 (1) Å, respectively. With increase in temperature, the water content in both the pores decreases above 450 K and vanishes around 600 K. Analysis of the powder diffraction data reveals that the hexagonal structure with the pores persist up to 1273 K, and transforms to another structure at 1323 K. The high temperature phase is not found to have the zircon or the monazite type structure, but a monoclinic structure (space group P2/m) with lattice parameters am= 6.826 (4) Å, bm= 6.645 (4) Å, cm= 10.435 (9)Å, and \b{eta}= 107.21 (6)°. The monoclinic structure has about 14 % smaller volume than the hexagonal structure which essentially reflects the collapse of the pores. The phase transition and the change in the volume are also confirmed by x-ray diffraction measurements. The hexagonal to the monoclinic phase transition is found to be irreversible on cooling to room temperature.

The results do not show any evidence of structural phase transition or decomposition of α-V2O5, contrary to the previous transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) experiments. The inelastic neutron scattering measurements performed up to 673 K corroborate the result of our X-ray diffraction measurements. The analysis of the experimental data is carried out using ab-initio lattice dynamics calculation. The important role of van der-Waals dispersion and Hubbard interactions on the structure and dynamics is revealed through the ab-initio calculations. The calculated anisotropic thermal expansion behavior agrees well with temperature dependent X- ray diffraction. The mechanism of anisotropic thermal expansion and anisotropic linear compressibility is discussed in terms of calculated anisotropy in Grüneisen parameters and elastic coefficients. The calculated Gibbs free energy in various phases of V2O5 is used to understand the high pressure and temperature phase diagram of the compound. Softening of elastic constant (C66) with pressure suggests a possibility of shear mechanism for α to \b{eta} phase transformation under pressure.

Beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) shows one-dimensional super-ionic conductivity as well as anisotropic thermal expansion behavior. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements in beta eucryptite over 300 to 900 K and calculated the phonon spectrum using ab initio density functional theory method. The calculated energy profile for cooperative lithium ion displacements indicates preferential movement of Li ion along the hexagonal c-axis in the high temperature phase. However, the energy barrier for Li ion diffusion is significantly reduced when a Schottky defect is introduced in the crystal. Further, the anisotropic stress dependence of the phonon spectrum is calculated to obtain the thermal expansion behavior along various axes. The calculations show that the Gruneisen parameters of the low-energy phonon modes around 10 meV have large negative values and govern the negative thermal expansion behavior both along the a and c axes. On the other hand, anisotropic elasticity along with anisotropic positive values of the Gruneisen parameters of the high-energy modes in the range 30 to 70 meV are responsible for positive thermal expansion in the a-b plane and negative expansion along the c-axis. The analysis of the polarization vectors of the phonon modes sheds light on the mechanism of the anomalous thermal expansion behavior. We extend the study to discuss the relationship of the soft phonons in the Brillouin zone with the observed high-pressure and high-temperature phase transitions as reported in the literature.

Several low energy transverse modes lead to positive thermal expansion along a and b axis in all the compounds. We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements over 7-1251 K in CaMnO3 covering various phase transitions, and over 6-150 K in PrMnO3 covering the magnetic transition. The excitations around 20 meV in CaMnO3 and at 17 meV in PrMnO3 are found to be associated with magnetic origin. In spite of similarity of the structure of the two compounds, the neutron inelastic spectrum of PrMnO3 exhibits broad features at 150 K unlike well-defined peaks in the spectrum of CaMnO3. This might result from the difference in nature of interactions in the two compounds (magnetic and Jahn-Teller distortion). The interpretation and analysis of the observed phonon spectra have been performed using ab-initio phonon calculations. We also discuss the effect of pressure on the structural distortions in the orthorhombic phase of CaMnO3 and PrMnO3. On application of pressure, we found that the variations of Mn-O distances are isotropic for CaMnO3 and highly anisotropic for PrMnO3. The calculated structure as a function of pressure in PrMnO3 shows that suppression of Jahn-Teller distortion and insulator to metal transition occurs simultaneously. Our calculations show that this transition may not be associated with the occurrence of the tetragonal phase above 20 GPa as reported in the literature, since the tetragonal phase is found to be dynamically unstable although it is found to be energetically favored over the orthorhombic phase above 20 GPa. CaMnO3 does not show any phase transition up to 60 GPa.

We present detailed ab-initio lattice dynamical analysis of the Fe-O infinite-layer compounds CaFeO2 and SrFeO2 in various magnetic configurations. These indicate strong spin-phonon coupling in SrFeO2 in contrast to that in case of CaFeO2. Powder neutron inelastic scattering experiments on SrFeO2 have also been performed at temperatures from 5 K to 353 K in the antiferromagnetic phase and analyzed using the ab-initio calculations. These suggest distortion of the ideal infinite planer structure above 300 K. From our ab-initio calculations in SrFeO2 as a function of volume, we suggest that the distortion in SrFeO2 above 300 K is similar to that known in CaFeO2 at ambient conditions. The distortion of the planer structure of CaFeO2 involves doubling of the planer unit cell that may be usually expected to be due to a soft phonon mode at the M-point (1/2 1/2 0). However, our ab-initio calculations show quite unusually that all the M-point (1/2 1/2 0) phonons are stable, but two stable M3+ and M2-modes anharmonically couple with an unstable Bu mode at the zone centre and lead to the cell doubling and the distorted structure. Magnetic exchange interactions in both the compounds have been computed on the basis of the ideal planar structure (P4/mmm space group) and with increasing amplitude of the Bu phonon mode. These reveal that the magnetic exchange interactions reduce significantly with increasing distortion. We have extended the ab-initio phonon calculation to high pressures, which reveal that, above 20 GPa of pressure, the undistorted planer CaFeO2 becomes dynamically stable. We also report computed phonon spectra in SrFeO3 that has a cubic structure, which is useful to understand the role of the difference in geometry of oxygen atoms around the Fe atom with respect to planer SrFeO2.

We have carried out temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements of YMnO3 over the temperature range 50 - 1303 K, covering both the antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition (70 K), as well as the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition (1258 K). Measurements are accompanied by first principles calculations of phonon spectra for the sake of interpretation and analysis of the measured phonon spectra in the room temperature ferroelectric (P63cm) and high temperature paraelectric (P63/mmc) hexagonal phases of YMnO3. The comparison of the experimental and first-principles calculated phonon spectra highlight unambiguously a spin-phonon coupling character in YMnO3. This is further supported by the pronounced differences in the magnetic and non-magnetic phonon calculations. The calculated atomistic partial phonon contributions of the Y and Mn atoms are not affected by inclusion of magnetic interactions, whereas the dynamical contribution of the O atoms is found tochange. This highlights the role of the super-exchange interactions between the magnetic Mn cations, mediated by O bridges. Phonon dispersion relations have also been calculated, in the entire Brillouin zone, for both the hexagonal phases. In the high-temperature phase, unstable phonon mode at the K point is highlighted. The displacement pattern at the K-point indicates that the freezing of this mode along with the stable mode at the Γ-point may lead to a stabilization of the low-temperature (P63cm) phase, and inducing ferroelectricity. Further, we have also estimated the mode Grüneisen parameter and volume thermal expansion behavior. The latter is found to agree with the available experimental data.

Lithium doped sodium niobate is an ecofriendly piezoelectric material that exhibits a variety of structural phase transitions with composition and temperature. We have investigated the phase stabilities of an important composition Li0.12Na0.88NbO3 (LNN12) using a combination of powder x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques in the temperature range 300 - 1100 K. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show a variety of structural phase transitions ranging from non-polar antiferrodistortive to ferroelectric in nature. In the temperature range of 525 K to 675 K, unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for phase coexistence of orthorhombic paraelectric O1 phase (space group Cmcm) and orthorhombic ferroelectric O2 phase (space group Pmc21). The bp primitive lattice parameter of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase (O2 phase) decreases, while the ap and cp primitive lattice parameters show normal increase with increase in temperature. Above 675 K, in the O1 phase, all lattice parameters come close to each other and increase continuously with increase of temperature, and around 925 K, ap parameter approaches bp parameter and thus the sample undergoes an orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition. Further as temperature increases, the cp lattice parameter decreases, and finally approaches to ap parameter, and the sample transform into the cubic phase. The continuous change in the lattice parameters reveals that the successive phase transformations from orthorhombic O1 to high temperature tetragonal phase and finally to the cubic phase are not of a strong first order type in nature. We argue that application of chemical pressure as a result of Li substitution in NaNbO3 matrix, favours the freezing of zone centre phonons over the zone boundary phonons that are known to freeze in pure NaNbO3 as function of temperature.

The layered structure of tetragonal Ni(CN)2, consisting of square-planar Ni(CN)4 units linked in the a-b plane, with no true periodicity along the c-axis, is expected to show anisotropic compression on the application of pressure. High-pressure neutron diffraction (elastic) and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on polycrystalline Ni(CN)2 to investigate its compressibility and stability. The intralayer a lattice parameter does not show any appreciable variation with increase of pressure up to 2.7 kbar. Above this pressure value, a decrease in a is observed. The c lattice parameter decreases slowly up to 1 kbar, then decreases sharply up to 20 kbar. It does not show any significant variation with further pressure increase up to 50 kbar. The response of the lattice parameters to the applied pressure is strongly anisotropic as the interlayer spacing (along the c-axis) shows a significantly larger contraction than the a-b plane. The experimental pressure dependence of the volume data is fitted to a bulk modulus, B0, of 1050 (20) kbar over the pressure range 0-1 kbar, and to 154 (2) kbar in the range 1-50 kbar. The change in the slope of the lattice parameters at 1 kbar is also supported by high-pressure Raman measurements, which indicate a phase transition at 1 kbar. Probably arising from a change in the CN ordering within the Ni(CN)2 layers. Raman measurements, performed up to 200 kbar, highlight the possible existence of a second phase transition taking place at about 70 kbar. Our neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the pressure dependence of the phonon spectra performed up to 2.7 kbar, also support the occurrence of a phase transition at low pressure.

Lattice dynamics and high pressure phase transitions in AWO4 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca and Pb) have been investigated using inelastic neutron scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and extensive molecular dynamics simulations. The vibrational modes that are internal to WO4 tetrahedra occur at the highest energies consistent with the relative stability of WO4 tetrahedra. The neutron data and the ab-initio calculations are found to be in excellent agreement. The neutron and structural data are used to develop and validate an interatomic potential model. The model is used for classical molecular dynamics simulations to study their response to high pressure. We have calculated the enthalpies of the scheelite and fergusonite phases as a function of pressure, which confirms that the scheelite to fergusonite transition is second order in nature. With increase in pressure, there is a gradual change in the AO8 polyhedra, while there is no apparent change in the WO4 tetrahedra. We found that that all the four tungstates amorphize at high pressure. This is in good agreement with available experimental observations which show amorphization at around 45 GPa in BaWO4 and 40 GPa in CaWO4. On amorphization, there is an abrupt increase in the coordination of the W atom while the bisdisphenoids around A atom are considerably distorted. The pair correlation functions of the various atom pairs corroborate these observations. Our observations aid in predicting the pressure of amorphization in SrWO4 and PbWO4, which have not been experimentally reported.

First principles lattice dynamical calculations are done for the sake of the analysis and interpretation of the observations. The comparison of the phonon spectra from magnetic and non-magnetic calculations highlights pronounced differences. The energy range of the vibrational atomistic contributions of the Fe and O ions are found to differ significantly in the two calculation types. Therefore, magnetism induced by the active spin degrees of freedom of Fe cations plays a key role in stabilizing the structure and dynamics of GaFeO3. Moreover, the computed enthalpy in various phases of GaFeO3 is used to gain deeper insights into the high pressure phase stability of this material. Further, the volume dependence of the phonon spectra is used to determine its thermal expansion behavior.

They can easily be mistaken for signatures of real excitations. We have found that they are due to multiple scattering events involving primarily walls of the sample environment. Hence, they are particularly troublesome in experiments using very small samples as have been used with recently developed high intensity neutron spectrometers. It will be discussed what needs to be done to reduce the unwanted scattering to a minimum.

Sodium niobate (NaNbO3) exhibits most complex sequence of structural phase transitions in perovskite family and therefore provides as excellent model system for understanding the mechanism of structural phase transitions. We report temperature dependence of inelastic neutron scattering measurements of phonon densities of states in sodium niobate. The measurements are carried out in various crystallographic phases of this material at various temperatures from 300 K to 1048 K. The phonon spectra exhibit peaks centered around 19, 37, 51, 70 and 105 meV. Interestingly, the peak around 70 meV shifts significantly towards lower energy with increasing temperature, while the other peaks do not exhibit an appreciable change. The phonon spectra at 783 K show prominent change and become more diffusive as compared to those at 303 K. In order to better analyze these features, we have performed first principles lattice dynamics calculations based on the density functional theory. The computed phonon density of states is found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Based on our calculation we are able to assign the characteristic Raman modes in the antiferroelectric phase to the A1g symmetry, which are due to the folding of the T (w=95 cm-1) and delta(w=129 cm-1) points of the cubic Brillouin zone.

We report phonon studies using neutron inelastic scattering experiments, ab-initio density functional theory calculations and potential model calculations on LiMPO4 (M=Mn, Fe) at ambient and high temperature to understand the microscopic picture of Li sub-lattice. The experiments are in good agreement with calculations. The lattice dynamics calculations indicate instability of a zone-centre as well as zone-boundary modes along (100) at volume corresponding to high temperature. The unstable phonon modes show mainly large vibration of Li atoms in the x-z plane of the orthorhombic structure (space group Pbnm). Molecular dynamics simulations with increasing temperature indicate large mean square displacement of Li as compared to other constituent atoms. The computed pair-correlations between various atom pairs show that there is local disorder occurring in the lithium sub-lattice with increasing temperature, while other pairs show minimal changes. The results find the two compounds to be thermally stable up to high temperatures, which is a desirable trait for its battery applications.

We report a comparative study of the dynamics of Cu2O, Ag2O and Au2O (i.e. M2O with M = Au, Ag and Cu) using first principle calculations based on the density functional theory. Here for the first time we show that the nature of chemical bonding and open space in the unit cell are directly related to the magnitude of thermal expansion coefficient. A good match between the calculated phonon density of states and that derived from inelastic neutron scattering measurements is obtained for Cu2O and Ag2O. The calculated thermal expansions of Ag2O and Cu2O are negative, in agreement with available experimental data, while it is found to be positive for Au2O. We identify the low energy phonon modes responsible for this anomalous thermal expansion. We further calculate the charge density in the three compounds and find that the magnitude of the ionic character of the Ag2O, Cu2O, and Au2O crystals is in decreasing order, with an Au-O bond of covalent nature strongly rigidifying the Au4O tetrahedral units. The nature of the chemical bonding is also found to be an important ingredient to understand the large shift of the phonon frequencies of these solids with pressure and temperature. In particular, the quartic component of the anharmonic term in the crystal potential is able to account for the temperature dependence of the phonon modes.

We report ab-inito density functional theory calculation of phonons in cubic phase of ZrW2O8 in the entire Brillouin zone and identify specific anharmonic phonons that are responsible for large negative thermal expansion (NTE) in terms of translation, rotation and distortion of WO4 and ZrO6. We have used density functional calculations to interpret the experimental phonon spectra as a function of pressure and temperature as reported in literature. We discover that the phonons showing anharmonicty with temperature are different from those showing anharmonicity with pressure although both are of similar frequencies. Only the latter phonons are associated with NTE. Therefore the cubic and/or quadratic anharmonicity of phonons is not relevant to NTE but just the volume dependence of frequencies. The calculations are able to reproduce the observed anomalous trends, namely, the softening of the low frequency peak at about 5 meV in the phonon spectra with pressure and its hardening with temperature, while both the changes involve a compression of the lattice.

The structural properties of the CaFe2As2 have been investigated by x-ray and neutron powder diffraction techniques as a function of temperature. Unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for coexistence of tetragonal and orthorhombic phases below 170 K in contrast to existing literature. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show that the sample does not transform completely in to the orthorhombic phase at the lowest temperature even though it is the majority phase. We have found that the unit cell volume of the orthorhombic phase is higher compared to that of the tetragonal phase for all the temperatures. X-ray data on CaFe2As2 shows anomalous (at) lattice parameter contraction with increasing temperature and phase co-existence behavior below 170 K unlike other members of the 122 family of compounds like SrFe2As2 and EuFe2As2. Temperature dependent magnetization of polycrystalline CaFe2As2 sample show weak anomalies below 170 K. The measurements support the recent Raman and infra-red measurements indicating a lowering of symmetry of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 upon cooling below 250 K. The comparison of the phonon spectra as obtained from the magnetic as well as non magnetic calculations show pronounced differences. We show that in the two calculations the energy range of the vibrational contribution from both Fe and Se are quite different. We conclude that Fe magnetism is correlated to the phonon dynamics and it plays an important role in stabilizing the structure of K0.8Fe1.6Se2 as well as that of KFe2Se2. The paraelectric phase is found to stabilize above 8 GPa and its crystal structure has been determined in orthorhombic symmetry with space group Pbnm. The variation of the structural parameters of the both orthorhombic phases as a function of pressure was determined. We have not found evidence for structural phase transition around 2 GPa as previously suggested in the literature based on Raman scattering experiments, however, significant change in Nb-O-Nb bond angles are found around this pressure. The response of the lattice parameters to pressure is strongly anisotropic with a largest contraction along <100>. The structural phase transition around ~ 8 GPa is followed by an anomalous increase in the orthorhombic strain and tilt angle associated with the R point (q= 1/2 1/2 1/2). Recently colossal positive volume thermal expansion has been found in the framework compounds Ag3Co(CN)6 and Ag3Fe(CN)6. Phonon spectra have been measured using the inelastic neutron scattering technique as a function of temperature and pressure. The data has been analyzed using ab-initio calculations. We find that the bonding is very similar in both compounds. At ambient pressure modes in the intermediate frequency part of the vibrational spectra in the Co compound are shifted to slightly higher energies as compared to the Fe compound. The temperature dependence of the phonon spectra gives evidence for large explicit anharmonic contribution to the total anharmonicity for low-energy modes below 5 meV. We found that modes are mainly affected by the change in the size of unit cell, which in turn changes the bond lengths and vibrational frequencies. Thermal expansion has been calculated via the volume dependence of phonon spectra. Our analysis indicates that Ag phonon modes in the energy range from 2 to 5 meV are strongly anharmonic and major contributors to thermal expansion in both compounds. The application of pressure hardens the low-energy part of the phonon spectra involving Ag vibrations and confirms the highly anharmonic nature of these modes.
