We present a spectral study of the single magnetically active K giant OP And in the period 1979 -- 2018, monitoring the variability of the activity indicator line H$α$. Original data obtained in the period 2015 -- 2018 with the echelle spectrograph ESpeRo at the 2m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory Rozhen in Bulgaria, previously unpublished original data obtained in the period 1997 -- 2007 and on one night in 2013 with the Coude spectrograph at the same telescope, as well as data from the literature are presented in this study. The variability of the H$α$ line reveals that the activity level of OP And is higher in the period 1993 -- 2000, while during the period 2008 -- 2010 it is lower, possibly close to a minimum. Also, our data for the period 2015 -- 2018 show that the activity level is increasing again. Spectral observations of the activity indicators CaII H&K lines and CaII IR triplet are sparse during the studied period. We use such ones when possible to confirm the detection of some flare events. The structure of H$α$ changes with the activity level: when the activity is higher, we observe a blue-shifted component of this line, interpreted as an expanding area above the photosphere, but during a lower activity period it is almost absent. Our results are in a good agreement with the idea that the magnetic field controls the mass outflow in this giant. More years of observations are necessary to determine the eventual activity cycle of OP And.

Chromite is a key magmatic mineral frequently used as petrogenetic indicator of physico-chemical conditions of mafic magma crystallization. In this work, magnesiochromite and chromite solubility in a natural basalt and an iron-free haplobasalt was investigated at 1440°C and atmospheric pressure under controlled CO-CO2 gas mixtures corresponding to the range two log units below to two log units above the fayalite-magnetite-quartz buffer. The source of chromium was either natural chromite or synthetic Cr2O3, the latter reacting with the basaltic liquids to form a magnesiochromite. The highest concentrations of Cr in haplobasaltic melts are found in equilibrium with magnesiochromite, depending on redox conditions. In detail, at low fO2, liquids have high Cr contents, but the variation of log [Cr, ppm] is not a linear function of log fO2. Using our new data and data from the literature a model for Cr concentrations at chromite/magnesiochromite saturation in silicate melts has been developed based upon a thermodynamic formalism. Our model may be used to assess the effect of melt composition on chromite and magnesiochromite solubility in silicate melts during peridotite melting and assimilation. At moderate and high oxygen fugacities, concentration levels of Cr at chromite saturation are higher for ultramafic than for felsic rocks. Our data imply that assimilation of magnesiochromite-bearing serpentinite lithosphere could result in high Cr contents in mafic melts, triggering massive crystallization of chromite, especially upon the system hydridization, cooling, oxidation and magma degassing. Our model may be applied for quantitative prediction of chromite crystallization and formation of the terrestrial mantle-crust transition zones and mantle represented by chromitites and dunites.

To constrain a contribution of deep carbonated mantle, to fractionation of Hf relative to rare earth elements (REE) in volcanic series, we examine available high-quality data on major, trace element and Nd-Hf isotope compositions of primitive lavas and glasses erupted during preshield, postshield and mostly rejuvenated stage of the Hawaiian hot spot (Pacific Ocean). Strong variations of Hf/Sm, Zr/Sm, Ti/Eu, K/Th, Nb/Th, La/K and Ba/K in the lavas are not features of the melt equilibration with residual amphibole or phlogopite, and cannot be due to variable degrees of batch or dynamic melting of uncarbonated lherzolite source. Enrichment in REE, Th and Ba relative to K, Hf, Zr, Ti and Nb together and low Si, high Na, K and Ca contents in the Hawaiian lavas are compositional features of carbonated mantle lithospheric to asthenospheric peridotite source affected by carbonatite metasomatism. In contrast, major and trace element signatures of most primitive preshield- and postshield-stage magmas require pyroxenite source.
The available data infer that Salt Lake Crater garnet pyroxenite xenoliths hosted by the Koolau volcano lavas on Oahu, Hawaii, were derived from deep eclogite source likely generating the carbonatite melts within the Hawaiian plume. Highly radiogenic Hf and decoupled Nd-Hf isotope systematics recorded in the Salt Lake Crater mantle xenolith series on Oahu may be explained by strong Hf fractionation relative to REE owing to ancient event of carbonatite metasomatism, which is likely related to partial melting of the deeply subducted carbonated eclogite within the Hawaiian plume.

The most abundant terrestrial lavas, mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalt (MORB and OIB), are commonly considered to be derived from a depleted MORB-mantle component and more specific, variably enriched mantle plume sources. However, findings of oceanic lavas and mafic cumulates issued from melts, enriched in chlorine and having a radiogenic Sr ratio, can be attributed to an interaction between the asthenosphere-derived melts and lithospheric peridotite variably hydrated due to penetration of hydrothermal water down to and below Moho level. To constrain mechanisms and rates responsible for the interaction, we report results of experiments of reaction between serpentinite and tholeiitic basaltic melt. Results show that the reaction proceeds via a multi-stage mechanism: (i) transformation of serpentinite into Cr-rich spinel-bearing harzburgite containing pore fluid, (ii) partial melting and dissolution of the harzburgite assemblage with formation of interstitial hydrous melts, and (iii) final assimilation of the Cr-rich spinel-bearing harzburgite/dunite and formation of hybrid basaltic melts with high MgO and elevated Cr and Ni contents. Assimilation of serpentinite by basaltic melt may occur under elevated melt/rock ratios and may lead to chromitite formation. Our experiments provide evidence that MORB and high-Mg-Cr orthopyroxene-rich cumulates depleted in incompatible elements can be produced from common mid-ocean ridge basaltic melts modified by reaction with hydrated lithospheric peridotite. We established that the rate of assimilation of serpentinized peridotite is controlled by silica diffusion in the reacting hydrous basaltic melt.

Current theories suggest that on Earth and, possibly, on other terrestrial planets early in their history, the first continental crust may has been produced by direct melting of hydrated peridotite. However, the conditions, mechanisms and necessary ingredients of such production remain elusive. To fill this gap, we have conducted experiments of serpentinite melting in the presence of variable proportions of basaltic melt, at typical conditions of the shallow lithosphere and asthenosphere. These experiments revealed formation of silica-rich liquids, which are similar to tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite magmas (TTG) identified in modern terrestrial oceanic mantle settings. Our results suggest a new mechanism of aqueous fluid-assisted partial melting of peridotite that may have operated on the early Earth and Mars just after the solidification of an ultramafic-mafic magma ocean, leading to the formation of the first embryos of continental crust. The proposed mechanism of the continental crust formation may have been predominant before the onset of plate tectonics.

Zircon is the most frequently used mineral for dating terrestrial and extraterrestrial rocks. However, the system of zircon in mafic/ultramafic melts has been rarely explored experimentally and most existing models based on the felsic, intermediate and/or synthetic systems are probably not applicable for prediction of zircon survival in terrestrial shallow asthenosphere. In order to determine the zircon stability in such natural systems, we have performed high-temperature experiments of zircon dissolution in natural mid-ocean ridge basaltic and synthetic haplobasaltic melts coupled with in situ electron probe microanalyses of the experimental products at high current.
Taking into account the secondary fluorescence effect in zircon glass pairs during electron microprobe analysis, we have calculated zirconium diffusion coefficient necessary to predict zircon survival in asthenospheric melts of tholeiitic basalt composition. The data imply that typical 100 micron zircons dissolve rapidly (in 10 hours) and congruently upon the reaction with basaltic melt at mantle pressures. We observed incongruent (to crystal ZrO2 and SiO2 in melt) dissolution of zircon in natural mid-ocean ridge basaltic melt at low pressures and in haplobasaltic melt at elevated pressure. Our experimental data raise questions about the origin of zircons in mafic and ultramafic rocks, in particular, in shallow oceanic asthenosphere and deep lithosphere, as well as the meaning of the zircon-based ages estimated from the composition of these minerals. Large size zircon megacrysts in kimberlites, peridotites, alkali basalts and other magmas suggest the fast transport and short interaction between zircon and melt. The origin of zircon megacrysts is likely related to metasomatic addition of Zr into mantle as any mantle melting episode should obliterate them.

Abstract:
We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $τ$ Ori and $τ$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $τ$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. In neither system, tidally excited oscillations were detected.

Context: When crossing the Hertzsprung gap, intermediate-mass stars develop a convective envelope. Fast rotators on the main sequence, or Ap star descendants, are expected to become magnetic active subgiants during this evolutionary phase. Aims: We compare the surface magnetic fields and activity indicators of two active, fast rotating red giants with similar masses and spectral class but diferent rotation rates - OU And (Prot=24.2 d) and 31 Com (Prot=6.8 d) - to address the question of the origin of their magnetism and high activity.
Methods: Observations were carried out with the Narval spectropolarimeter in 2008 and 2013.We used the least squares deconvolution technique to extract Stokes V and I profiles to detect Zeeman signatures of the magnetic field of the stars. We provide Zeeman-Doppler imaging, activity indicator monitoring, and a precise estimation of stellar parameters. We use stellar evolutionary models to infer the evolutionary status and the initial rotation velocity on the main sequence.
Results: The detected magnetic field of OU And is a strong one. Its longitudinal component Bl reaches 40 G and presents an about sinusoidal variation with reversal of the polarity. The magnetic topology of OU And is dominated by large scale elements and is mainly poloidal with an important dipole component, and a significant toroidal component. The detected magnetic field of 31 Com is weaker, with a magnetic map showing a more complex field geometry, and poloidal and toroidal components of equal contributions. The evolutionary models show that the progenitors of OU And and 31 Com must have been rotat
Conclusions: OU And appears to be the probable descendant of a magnetic Ap star, and 31 Com the descendant of a relatively fast rotator on the main sequence.

A method is suggested for estimation of structural properties of amorphous fullerene and its derivatives produced by vacuum annealing. The method is based on the fitting of the neutron or x-ray powder diffraction patterns for scattering wave vector's modulus in the range from few units to several tens of inverse nanometers. The respective inverse problem assumes that the structured component of a sample can be described with a limited number, Nstr, of candidate sp2 carbon structures (fullerenes, flat and curved flakes with graphene-like atom arrangement) of a limited number of atoms, Natom. These structures are packed heterogeneously, in the domains with various average density of atoms and various degree of ordering of structures, using the Rigid Body Molecular Dynamics with variable parameter of pair interaction of atoms in the neighboring rigid-body nanostructures. The method is applied to interpreting the data of neutron diffraction by an amorphous fullerene annealed at temperatures 600, 800, 850, 900 and 1000 C. The results for Nstr equal to 36 and Natom in the range from 14 to 285 enabled us to quantify structural properties of the samples in terms of the average size and curvature of the sp2 carbon structures, and analyze sensitivity of results to the layout of these structures in the domains (mixture of various structures in each domain vs. mixture of domains of identical structures).

Bayesian statistical methods of Gregory-Loredo and the Bretthorst generalization of the Lomb-Scargle periodogram have been applied for studying activity cycles of the early K-type subgiant star CF Oct. We have used a ~45 year long dataset derived from archival photographic observations, published photoelectric photometry, Hipparcos data series and All Sky Automated Survey archive. We have confirmed the already known rotational period for the star of 20.16 d and have shown evidences that it has exhibited changes from 19.90 d to 20.45 d. This is an indication for stellar surface differential rotation. The Bayesian magnitude and time--residual analysis reveals clearly at least one long-term cycle. The cycle lenght's posterior distributions appear to be multimodal with a pronounced peak at a period of 7.1 y with FWHM of 54 d for time-residuals and at a period of 9.8 y with FWHM of 184 d for magitude data. These results are consistent with the previously postulated cycle of 9+/-3 years.

Saturated stellar images on digitised photographic plates are many times greater in area than the `seeing disk' seen in unsaturated CCD images. Indeed the flux profile of a bright star can be traced out for several degrees from the star's centre. The radius of the saturated stellar image can often be directly related to the magnitude of the star, a fact well known and exploited in iris photometry. In this work we compare the radial flux profile of stars in the approximate range B ~9 to ~13 mag, obtained from scans of plates from the Bamberg Sky Patrol archive, with a profile of the form measured by King. We show that simple aperture photometry of saturated stellar images, obtained from photo-positives of scanned photographic plates, yield data that are in agreement with simulations using a (saturated) synthetic stellar radius profile. Raw plate magnitudes from this aperture photometry can be easily and satisfactorily transformed to standard magnitudes, as demonstrated in a recent study carried out by the current authors.

The unusual pre-main-sequence binary star named KH 15D undergoes remarkably deep and long-lasting periodic eclipses. Some clues about the reason for these eclipses have come from the observed evolution of the system's light curve over the last century. Here we present UBVRI photometry of KH 15D based on photographic plates from various observatories, ranging in time from 1954 to 1997. The system has been variable at the ~1 mag level since at least 1965. There is no evidence for color variations, with a typical limit of Delta(B-V) < 0.2 mag. We confirm some previously published results that were based on a smaller sample of plates: from approximately 1965 to 1990, the total flux was modulated with the 48-day orbital period of the binary, but the maximum flux was larger, the fractional variations were smaller, and the phase of minimum flux was shifted by almost a half-cycle relative to the modern light curve. All these results are consistent with the recently proposed theory that KH 15D is being occulted by an inclined, precessing, circumbinary ring.

We use the archive of the Bamberg Sky Patrol to obtain light curves of the active K subgiant CF Octantis for the interval 1964-1976. Digitised images of the field near CF Oct were obtained with a flat-bed scanner. Aperture photometry was performed of photo-positives of these images. Using a transformation to second order in plate magnitude, and first order in B-V, for 9 field stars for each plate, the B magnitudes of CF Octantis were obtained for just over 350 plates. The estimated precision of an individual determination of the B magnitude of CF Oct is 0.05 mag. Analysis of the resulting data reveals the known 20 d rotational variation of this star, and shows the evolution of the light curves from year to year. We obtain light curves with good phase coverage for 1964 to 1969 inclusive, partial light curves for 1970 and 1976, and a few data points from 1971. The amplitude of variation ranges from ~0.2 to \~0.4 mag. There is evidence that the characteristic rotation period of the star in the 1960s was slightly less than that measured from photoelectric photometry in the 1980s.
