Magneto-optics based current imaging technique compares the nature of topological current distribution in a single crystal and thin film of topological insulator material, Bi2Se3. The single crystal, at low temperatures, has uniform topological surface current sheets which are about 3.6 nm thick. With increasing temperature, the current partially diverts into the crystal bulk and concomitantly, the sheet break up into a patchy network of high and low current density regions. The temperature dependence of the high current density areas shows that the surface to bulk transformation in the crystal has features of classical phase transition phenomena. The surface area fraction with topological high current density behaves like an order parameter. This phase transition is driven by disorder. In Bi2Se3 thin film we show the presence of quasi one-dimensional topological edge currents which are suppressed with a weak applied magnetic field. The edge current transforms into a uniform bulk current in the film.

The Ideal Membership Problem (IMP) tests if an input polynomial $f\in \mathbb{F}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ with coefficients from a field $\mathbb{F}$ belongs to a given ideal $I \subseteq \mathbb{F}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$. It is a well-known fundamental problem with many important applications, though notoriously intractable in the general case. In this paper we consider the IMP for polynomial ideals encoding combinatorial problems and where the input polynomial $f$ has degree at most $d=O(1)$ (we call this problem IMP$_d$). A dichotomy result between ``hard'' (NP-hard) and ``easy'' (polynomial time) IMPs was recently achieved for Constraint Satisfaction Problems over finite domains [Bulatov FOCS'17, Zhuk FOCS'17] (this is equivalent to IMP$_0$) and IMP$_d$ for the Boolean domain [Mastrolilli SODA'19], both based on the classification of the IMP through functions called polymorphisms. The complexity of the IMP$_d$ for five polymorphisms has been solved in [Mastrolilli SODA'19] whereas for the ternary minority polymorphism it was incorrectly declared to have been resolved by a previous result. As a matter of fact the complexity of the IMP$_d$ for the ternary minority polymorphism is open. In this paper we provide the missing link by proving that the IMP$_d$ for Boolean combinatorial ideals whose constraints are closed under the minority polymorphism can be solved in polynomial time. This result, along with the results in [Mastrolilli SODA'19], completes the identification of the precise borderline of tractability for the IMP$_d$ for constrained problems over the Boolean domain. This paper is motivated by the pursuit of understanding the issue of bit complexity of Sum-of-Squares proofs raised by O'Donnell [ITCS'17]. Raghavendra and Weitz [ICALP'17] show how the IMP$_d$ tractability for combinatorial ideals implies bounded coefficients in Sum-of-Squares proofs.

Sensitive ac susceptibility measurements of a topological insulator, Bi$_2$Se$_3$ single crystal, using mutual two coil inductance technique (Ref. 32) shows coupling and decoupling of high conducting surface states. The coupling of the surface states exists upto thickness of 70 microns, which is much larger than the direct coupling limit of thickness approximately 5 to 10 nanometers found in thin films. The high conducting topological surface states are coupled through the crystal via high electrically conducting channels, generated by Selenium vacancies. These conducting channels through the bulk disintegrate beyond 70 micron thickness and at high temperatures, thereby leading to decoupling of the topological surface states. We show the decoupled surface states persist upto room temperature in the topological insulator. Analysis of Nyquist plot of ac-susceptibility response of the TI using a resistor (R) Inductor (L) model shows an inductive nature of the coupling between surface states found in these Bi$_2$Se$_3$ crystals.

Pure Topological Insulating materials preserve a unique electronic state comprising of bulk insulating gap and conducting surface states. Here we use bulk Bi2Se3 single crystals possessing Se vacancy defects as a prototype topological insulator (TI) material for exploring the effect of non-magnetic disorder on the conducting properties of TIs. We employ a sensitive, non-contact, mutual inductance based technique for measuring the surface and bulk contribution to electrical conductivity in the TI. We discern the different contributions, by observing that predominant surface electrical conduction produces linear frequency dependence of the pickup signal while bulk conductivity gives rise to quadratic frequency dependence. We also see an algebraic temperature dependent surface conductivity while an activated bulk conductivity. Using the above we uncover an interplay between surface and bulk contribution to electrical conductivity in the TI as a function of temperatures. In the Bi2Se3 crystals the transformation from surface to bulk dominated electrical transport is found to occur close to 70 K. This temperature range matches well with our results from activated bulk electrical transport results which shows an activation energy scale, delta which is in the millieV range. The gap delta is much less than the bulk band gap in Bi2Se3, and which we argue is associated with defect states in the TI material. To understand our results, we propose a model of a TI comprising of an inhomogeneous low electrically conducting medium (bulk) which is sandwiched between thin two high electrically conducting sheets (surface). The inhomogeneous TI state we argue is generated by Selenium vacancies defects in Bi2Se3, which is responsible for producing an interplay between bulk and surface conductivity.

A pair of non-adjacent edges is said to be separated in a circular ordering of vertices, if the endpoints of the two edges do not alternate in the ordering. The circular separation dimension of a graph $G$, denoted by $π^\circ(G)$, is the minimum number of circular orderings of the vertices of $G$ such that every pair of non-adjacent edges is separated in at least one of the circular orderings. This notion is introduced by Loeb and West in their recent paper. In this article, we consider two subclasses of planar graphs, namely $2$-outerplanar graphs and series-parallel graphs. A $2$-outerplanar graph has a planar embedding such that the subgraph obtained by removal of the vertices of the exterior face is outerplanar. We prove that if $G$ is $2$-outerplanar then $π^\circ(G) = 2$. We also prove that if $G$ is a series-parallel graph then $π^\circ(G) \leq 2$.

The analyses of SdH oscillations observed in magneto-resistance data using Lifshitz-Kosevich equation reveal a systematic decrease in the Fermi surface area with Sb substitution. The Berry phase obtained from the Landau Level fan diagram suggests the occurrence of 2D oscillations arising from a Topological Surface State (TSS) for Sb concentrations of x = 0, 0.05 and 0.1; while 2D oscillation seen at higher Sb concentration is attributed to surface 2D electron gas consequent to downward band bending.

The variation of resistivity with temperature that points to a metallic behaviour in Bi2Se3, shows an upturn at low temperatures in the Te doped samples. Magnetoresistance measurements in Bi2Se3 show clear signatures of Shubnikov de Hass oscillations that gets suppressed in the Te doped samples. In the Bi2SeTe2 sample, the magneto-resistance shows a cusp like positive magneto-resistance at low magnetic fields and low temperatures, a feature associated with weak antilocalisation (WAL), that crosses over to negative magneto-resistance at higher fields. The qualitatively different magnetotransport behaviour seen in Bi2SeTe2 as compared to Bi2Se3 is rationalised in terms of the disorder, through an estimate of the carrier density, carrier mobility and an analysis in terms of the Ioffe Regel criterion with support from Hall Effect measurements.

Increasing doping concentration (x) in Pnictide superconductors results in the suppression of long range magnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity. While doping destroys long range magnetic order however the effect if any of the surviving magnetic fluctuations on superconductivity in Pnictides is currently not well understood. In optimally doped BaFe2-xCoxAs2 single crystals, below Tc we observe local regions with positive magnetization coexisting along with superconductivity at low applied magnetic fields (H). With increasing H the positive magnetization response gets weaker and the robust superconducting diamagnetic response appears. The normal state is found to be inhomogeneous with regions having local diamagnetic response embedded in a positive magnetization background. Estimates of the superconducting fraction in the normal state shows it maximizes for the optimally doped crystal. We construct a doping dependent H - T diagram identifying different fluctuation regimes and our data suggests a close correlation between magnetic and superconducting fluctuations in BaFe2-xCoxAs2.

There is a systematic change in the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) from negative to positive as the Si composition is increased. The Hall co-efficient shows that the carriers are electron like and the carrier density increases with Si concentration. Resistance measurements under magnetic field indicate a decreasing behavior under the application of magnetic field at low temperature region (T< 60 K), suggesting the suppression of scattering by magnetic field. Temperature and field dependent magnetization measurements did not show any significant change apart from the fact that the presence of super paramagnetic (SPM) cluster and its ordering at low temperatures. Arrott plot analysis of magnetization versus field also indicates the magnetic ordering with applied field below 60 K.

In this study we examine the phase transitions in single crystals of [(CH3)2NH2]Co(HCOO)3], using magnetization and specific heat measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Magnetisation measurements indicate a transition at 15 K that is associated with an antiferromagnetic transition. The results of the isothermal magnetization versus magnetic field curves demonstrate the presence of a single-ion magnet phase, coexisting with antiferromagnetism. A peak in specific heat is seen at 15 K, corresponding to the magnetic transition. The enthalpy of the transition evaluated from the area under the specific heat peak decreases with the application of magnetic field of upto8 T. This is suggestive of long range antiferromagnetic magnetic order, giving way to single-ion magnetic behavior under external field. In experiments at high temperatures, corresponding to the well-known structural transition in this system, the specific heat measurements, shows a peak at ~155K, that is insensitive to applied magnetic field. The magnetisation in this temperature range, while it exhibits a paramagnetic behavior, shows a distinct jump that has been attributed to a spin-state transition of Co2+ associated with the structural transition.

Using the experimentally measured temperature and doping dependent structural parameters on Ru doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$, orbital-dependent reconstruction of the electronic structure across the magnetostructural transition is found, through first principle simulations. Below structural transition there exists two distinct Fe - Fe bond distances which modifies the Fe-d$_{xy}$ orbital largely due to its planar spatial extension leading to Lifshitz transition, while the otherwise degenerate Fe-d$_{xz}$ and d$_{yz}$ orbitals become non-degenerate, giving rise to orbital order. The orbital order follows the temperature dependence of orthorhombocity and is also the cause of two distinct Fe - Fe bond distances. Doping dependent Fermi surfaces show nearly equal expansion of both the electron and hole like Fermi surfaces whereas the hole Fermi surface shrinks with temperature but the electron Fermi surface expands comparatively slowly. The observed structural transition in this compound is electronic in origin, occurs close to the Lifshitz transition whereas the suppression of the concurrent magnetic transition is due to loss of temperature dependent nesting of Fermi surface.

The normal state resistivity has been analyzed in terms of a model that incorporates both spin fluctuations and the opening of the gap in the spin density wave (SDW)phase. It is shown that Tc scales with the strength of the spin fluctuation, B, and T_{S-M} scales with the SDW gap parameter, Δ. The variation of positional co-ordinates of As (zAs), the Fe-As bond length and the As-Fe-As bond angles have been determined from the Rietveld refinements. The results indicate that while the orthorhombicity shows the characteristic increase with decrease in temperature, the As-Fe-As bond angles, Fe-As bond length and positional co-ordinate of the As show definite anomalies close to the structural transition. The magnetisation versus field isotherms reveal the occurrence of a clear second magnetisation peak (SMP) also known as fish-tail effect for both H parallel and perpendicular to c-axis of the crystal. The in-field resistance and magnetisation data are used to put forth a vortex phase diagram. The nature of the vortices have been determined from scaling behaviour of the pinning force density extracted from the Jc-H isotherms. The scaled JC versus reduced temperature behaviour seems to fit to a power law that indicates unambiguously that pinning in this system arises due to the spatial variation in the mean free path, viz. delta-l pinning.

The rho(T) shows a negative co-efficient of resistivity under pressure upto 3.2 GPa. The occurrence of an insulator to metal transition (MIT) in an external P ~4.5 GPa is indicated by a change in the temperature co-efficient in the rho(T) data at ~36 K . However complete metallization in entire temperature range is seen at a P~5.8 GPa. High pressure XRD studies carried out at room temperature also shows an anomaly in the pressure versus volume curve around P ~ 5 GPa, without a change in crystal structure, indicative of an electronic transition. Further, a clear precipitous drop in rho(T) at ~17 K is seen for P ~5.8 GPa which suggests the possibility of the system going over to a superconducting ground state.

Temperature dependent electrical resistivity and thermopower measurements were carried out on Gd1-xCaxBaCo2O5.53 with x varying between 0 and 0.25. Ca subsitution leads to the incorporation of holes (Co4+) into the system that leads to a reduction in resistivity and a stabilisation of the ferromagnetic phase at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of resistivity and thermopower are markedly different in the Ca doped sample, with a dramatic reduction in the resistivity, as compared to that in the pristine sample. The variation in both the resistivity and thermopower with temperature is explained in terms of the transport of polarons in the ferromagnetic phase of Ca doped system.

In an attempt to induce charge transfer and also induce chemical pressure between the FeAs and PrO layers we have synthesized for the first time oxypnictides of the type PrOFe0.9Co0.1As1-xPx (P doping at As sites). All the compounds crystallize in the tetragonal ZrCuSiAs type structure (space group = P4/nmm). The lattice parameters (a and c) decrease as expected on substitution of smaller phosphorous at the arsenic site in PrOFe0.9Co0.1As and a decrease in TC was observed on substitution of P ions at a low rate of 0.13K/at. % of P for x > 0.1. The irreversibility field (Hirr) and critical current density (JC), obtained using the AC susceptibility measurements was found to decrease monotonically with increasing 'P' concentration. 'Hirr' is observed to be much smaller than HC2, pointing to a very low pinning energy. The pinning potential obtained using both in-field transport and AC susceptibility measurements indicate a low value of ~40 meV and show no significant variation with P substitution.

HC2 versus temperature was measured from temperature dependent resistivity, for various applied magnetic fields, H || ab and H || c. The [dHC2/dT]T=Tc, normalized with the corresponding TC, decreases with increasing Co content, for both directions. The anisotropy γ defined as HC2 || ab / HC2 || c shows a distinct increase with Co content, and its temperature dependence shows a peak close to the TC. Magneto transport measurements, in the spin density wave regions, showed significant negative MR for H || ab and positive MR of H || c in the x = 0.082 sample. The implications of these results are discussed.

We have synthesized tetragonal iron selenide and telluride superconductors through solid state reaction at 450deg.C and 550deg.C respectively. These synthesis temperatures have been established by optimization. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements (4.2-300 K) confirm superconductivity with Tc of around 8.5 K in all selenide samples of nominal composition Fe1+deltaSe (delta=0.02-0.22). However, Scanning Electron Microscopy/ Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy studies clearly indicate that the actual stoichiometric ratio of Fe : Se for all the samples synthesized is around 1:1. Also all the samples exhibit identical phase transition temperatures from tetragonal to orthorhombic structure below ~ 100 K implying identical phase composition. The partial substitution of Se by Te leads to an enhancement of Tc to ~ 13 K. The non-superconducting telluride Fe1.09Te exhibits a metal-insulator phase transition at ~ 82 K. Substitution studies of this telluride system by S and Si have in addition been carried out to investigate if chemical pressure induces superconductivity.

The evolution of pressure induced superconductivity in single crystal as well as polycrystalline samples of BaFe2As2 has been investigated through temperature dependent electrical resistivity studies in 0-7 GPa pressure range. While the superconducting transition remains incomplete in polycrystalline sample, a clear pressure induced superconductivity with zero resistivity at the expense of magnetic transition, associated with spin density wave (SDW), is observed in the single crystal sample. The superconducting transition temperature (TC) is seen to increase upto a moderate pressure of about ~1.5 GPa and decreases monotonically beyond this pressure. The SDW transition temperature TSDW decreases rapidly with increasing pressure and vanishes above ~1.5 GPa.

The occurrence of bulk superconductivity at ~22 K is reported in polycrystalline samples of BaFe2-xRuxAs2 for nominal Ru content in the range of x=0.75 to 1.125. A systematic suppression of the spin density wave transition temperature (TSDW) precedes the appearance of superconductivity in the system. A phase diagram is proposed based on the measured TSDW and superconducting transition temperature (TC) variations as a function of Ru composition. Band structure calculations, indicate introduction of electron carriers in the system upon Ru substitutiom. The calculated magnetic moment on Fe shows a minimum at x=1.0, suggesting that the suppression of the magnetic moment is associated with the emergence of superconductivity. Results of low temperature and high field Mossbauer measurements are presented. These indicate weakening of magnetic interaction with Ru substitution

From high field magnetization hysterisis measurements carried out in fields up to 16 T at 4.2 K and 20 K, the critical current density has been evaluated using the Bean critical state model. The JC determined from the high field data is >104A/cm2 at 4.2 K and 5 T. The superconducting transitions were also measured resistively in increasing applied magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla. We report on the effect of Ni substitution at the Co site on the physical properties of NaxCoO2 system by investigating the series NaxCo1-yNiyO2 (x=0.75, 0<y<0.15). An upturn in the resistivity is observed in all Ni substituted samples as the temperature is lowered, suggestive of the occurrence of a Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT). The temperature at which this transition occurs increases with Ni content. The temperature dependence of the resistivity in the metallic region in the Ni substituted samples shows a T2 dependence, which is qualitatively different from that observed in the pristine sample. The evolution of the Fano asymmetry parameter, extracted by analyzing the lineshape of the IR active in-plane Co-O mode, both as a function of Ni concentration and temperature corroborates the occurrence of the MIT. It is argued that the progressive substitution of the Co4+ ions with Ni increases the probability of double occupancy and therefore the on-site Coulomb interaction energy leading to a shift in the thermodynamically driven MIT to higher temperatures.

The Raman line corresponding to the E2g phonon mode shows progressive hardening from 620 cm-1 in pristine MgB2 to 775 cm-1 in the sample with carbon fraction x=0.2. The corresponding line width on the other hand, increases from a value of about 220 cm-1 to 286 cm-1 in samples with x = 0.1, beyond which it decreases to a value 167 cm-1 for x=0.2. From the average mode frequency and the line width obtained from Raman measurements and taking the values of N(0) obtained from the calculated variation in s hole density of states in MgB2-xCx, the electron phonon coupling strength to the E2g phonon, l2g, is evaluated using Allen’s formula. This remains large for low C fraction, but shows rapid decrease for x > 0.10. Using this value of l2g appropriately weighted, TC is obtained from McMillan’s equation. These values are in good agreement with the experimentally measured TC variation in MgB2-xCx.

The superconducting transition temperature, T$_{C}$, the residual resistivity $ρ_{0}$ and the slope of resistivity curve at high temperature, d$ρ$/dT, have been measured in a series of MgB$_{2}$ samples that have been chemically substituted to varying degree with Li or Cu at the Mg-site and by Li or Cu at the Mg-site along with C substitution at the B-site. DC resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements were employed to extract the above parameters. T$_{C}$ versus the electron count (estimated from simple chemical valence count arguments) shows a universal behaviour, with T$_{C}$ being constant at the MgB$_{2}$ value for electron counts lower than in MgB$_{2}$ but rapidly decreasing for larger electron counts. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch- Gruneisen formula, from which the Debye temperature, $θ_{D}$, and the $ρ_{0}$ are extracted. $θ_{D}$ variation with T$_{C}$ is not systematic, whereas $ρ_{0}$ versus T$_{C}$ shows a systematic variation that depends on the type of the chemical substituent. This dependence has a signature of the nature of the intraband/interband scattering affected by the chemical substitutions. d$ρ$/dT increases with C substitution, but decreases with Li and Cu substitution, implying that C substitution leads to the domination of conductivity by the $σ$ band, while in the Li/Cu substituted samples the $π$ band dominates conduction.

X-ray diffraction measurements indicate the formation of P63/mmc structure up to x=0.6. However, no diamagnetic signal or zero resistance, corresponding to the superconducting transition, was observed in the temperature range of 300 to 4 K. This is possibly related to the presence of disorder in the B-C stacking; evidence for which is suggested from a study of the vibrational modes of LixBC through infrared spectroscopy.

Successful replacement of B by C in the series MgB2-xCx for values of x upto 0.3 are reported. Resistivity and ac susceptibility measurements have been carried out in the samples. Solubility of carbon, inferred from the observed change in the lattice parameter with carbon content indicates that carbon substitutes upto x=0.30 into the MgB2 lattice. The superconducting transition temperature, TC measured both by zero resistivity and the onset of the diamagnetic signal shows a systematic decrease with increase in carbon content upto x=0.30, beyond which the volume fraction decreases drastically. The temperature dependence of resistivity in the normal state fits to the Bloch-Gruneisen formula for all the carbon compositions studied. The Debye temperatures, extracted from the fit is seen to decrease with carbon content from 900K to 525K, whereas the electron-phonon interaction parameter, obtained from the McMillan equation using the measured TC and the Debye temperature, is seen to increase monotonically from 0.8 in MgB2 to 0.9 in the x=0.50 sample. The ratio of the resistivities between 300K and 40K versus TC is seen to follow the Testardi correlation for the C substituted samples. The decrease in TC is argued to mainly arise due to large decrease in the Debye temperature with C concentration and a decrease in the hole density of states at N(EF).

The absorption spectrum is characterised by a broad band centred at 485 cm^{-1}, with shoulders at 333 and 387 cm^{-1}. Studies on the temperature dependence of absorption, indicate that these modes initially harden with the lowering of temperature, and this trend is arrested at ~ 100 K, below which they soften. Further, in the case of the mode at 333 cm^{-1}, there is a distinct softening associated with the superconducting transition at 39 K. We have studied single crystals of $C_{70}$ by Raman scattering and photoluminescence in the pressure range from 0 to 31.1 GPa. The Raman spectrum at 31.1 GPa shows only a broad band similar to that of the amorphous carbon without any trace of the Raman lines of $C_{70}$. After releasing the pressure from 31.1 GPa, the Raman and the photoluminescence spectra of the recovered sample are that of the starting $C_{70}$ crystal. These results indicate that the $C_{70}$ molecules are stable upto 31.1 GPa and the amorphous carbon high pressure phase is reversible, in sharp contrast to the results on solid $C_{60}$. A qualitative explaination is suggested in terms of inter- versus intra-molecular interactions.
