We report high resolution neutron scattering measurements on the triangular lattice Mott insulator Na$_x$CrO$_2$ ($x$=1) which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusually broad fluctuating crossover regime extending far below the onset of spin freezing ($T_c\sim$41K). Our results show that below some crossover temperature ($T\sim0.75T_c$) a small incommensuration develops which helps resolve the spin frustration and drives three-dimensional magnetic order supporting coherent spin wave modes. This incommensuration assisted dimensional crossover suggests that inter-layer frustration is responsible for stabilizing the rare 2D correlated phase above 0.75$T_c$. In contrast to the host compound of 2D cobaltate superconductor such as Na$_x$CoO$_2$ ($ξ_c>50$Å), no magnetic long-range order is observed down to 1.5K ($ξ_c<16$Å).

Abstract:
Using density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, we propose a family of metastable, as-yet unmade V5+ and Cr6+ double perovskite compounds with low band gaps spanning much of the visible region of the solar spectrum. Through analysis of a related set of measured optical gaps of d0 ABO3 perovskites and A2B'BO6 double perovskites, an ad hoc procedure is developed to correct DFT and many-bod…

Using density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations, we propose a family of metastable, as-yet unmade V5+ and Cr6+ double perovskite compounds with low band gaps spanning much of the visible region of the solar spectrum. Through analysis of a related set of measured optical gaps of d0 ABO3 perovskites and A2B'BO6 double perovskites, an ad hoc procedure is developed to correct DFT and many-body perturbation theory gaps, bringing them into quantitative agreement with experiment for measured compounds, and predicting that V5+ and Cr6+ double perovskites would have gaps ranging from approximately 1.1-2.4 eV, significantly lower than previous materials studied in this class. DFT calculations also establish that these V5+ and Cr6+ compounds are likely able to be synthesized, either in bulk form or as epitaxial thin films. These compounds would comprise a new class of semiconducting double perovskites for potential use in solar energy conversion and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:

Anisotropic strains are shown to reduce the gap by breaking degeneracies at the band edges. Ferroic distortions are shown to widen the gap by allowing new band edge orbital mixings. The effects of ferroic distortion and biaxial strain on the band gap and band edges of SrTiO$_{3}$ (STO) are calculated using density functional theory and many-body perturbation theory. Anisotropic strains are shown to reduce the gap by breaking degeneracies at the band edges. Ferroic distortions are shown to widen the gap by allowing new band edge orbital mixings. Compressive biaxial strains raise band edge energies, while tensile strains lower them. To reduce the STO gap, one must lower the symmetry from cubic while suppressing ferroic distortions. Our calculations indicate that for engineered orientation of the growth direction along [111], the STO gap can be controllably and considerably reduced at room temperature.

The magnetic properties of $α$-NaFeO$_2$ are studied by neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. An ordered phase with spins aligned along the b$_hex$ axis exists at low temperatures (T < 4 K). At intermediate temperatures (4 K < T < 11 K), the system passes through an incommensurate ordered phase before transforming into a short range ordered state at higher temperatures that persists up to at least 50 K. Although the short range ordering does not persist to room temperature according to neutron diffraction, the magnetic susceptibility does not follow Curie-Weiss behavior, even up to 320 K. This rich magnetic behavior can be understood qualitatively as a competition between different magnetic exchange interactions that are similar in magnitude. The delicate balance between these interactions makes $α$-NaFeO$_2$ a candidate for more detailed theoretical work to understand magnetic behavior in frustrated magnetic systems.

We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excitations in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets.
