A `toy model' - aimed at capturing the essential physics - is presented that jointly describes spin-polarized hot electron transport and spin pumping driven by local heating. These two processes both contribute to spin-current generation in laser-excited magnetic heterostructures. The model is used to compare the two contributions directly. The spin-polarized hot electron current is modeled as one generation of hot electrons with a spin-dependent excitation and relaxation scheme. Upon decay, the excess energy of the hot electrons is transferred to a thermalized electron bath. The elevated electron temperature leads to an increased rate of electron-magnon scattering processes and yields a local accumulation of spin. This process is dubbed as spin pumping by local heating. The built-up spin accumulation is effectively driven out of the ferromagnetic system by (interfacial) electron transport. Within our model, the injected spin current is dominated by the contribution resulting from spin pumping, while the hot electron spin current remains relatively small. We derive that this observation is related to the ratio between the Fermi temperature and Curie temperature, and we show what other fundamental parameters play a role.

All-optical switching (AOS) of magnetization by a single femtosecond laser pulse in Co/Gd based synthetic ferrimagnets is the fastest magnetization switching process. On the other hand, He ion irradiation has become a promising tool for interface engineering of spintronic material platforms, giving rise to significant modification of magnetic properties. In this paper, we explore the use of He ion irradiation to enhance single pulse AOS of Co/Gd bilayer-based synthetic ferrimagnets. The intermixing of the constituent magnetic layers by He ion irradiation was both numerically simulated and experimentally verified. We theoretically modelled the effects of intermixing on AOS using the layered microscopic 3-temperature model and found that AOS is enhanced significantly by breaking the pristine Co/Gd interface through intermixing. Following this notion, we studied the threshold fluence of AOS as a function of He ion irradiation fluence. We found that the AOS threshold fluence can be reduced by almost 30%. Our study reveals the control of AOS by He ion irradiation, which opens up an industrially compatible approach for local AOS engineering.

Several rare-earth transition-metal ferrimagnetic systems exhibit all-optical magnetization switching upon excitation with a femtosecond laser pulse. Although this phenomenon is very promising for future opto-magnetic data storage applications, the role of non-local spin transport in these systems is scarcely understood. Using Co/Gd and Co/Tb bilayers we isolate the contribution of the rare-earth materials to the generated spin currents by using the precessional dynamics they excite in an adjacent ferromagnetic layer as a probe. By measuring THz standing spin-waves as well as GHz homogeneous precessional modes, we probe both the high- and low-frequency components of these spin currents. The low-frequency homogeneous mode indicates a significant contribution of Gd to the spin current, but not from Tb, consistent with the difficulty in achieving all-optical switching in Tb-containing systems. Measurements on the THz frequency spin waves reveal the inability of the rare-earth generated spin currents to excite dynamics at the sub-ps timescale. We present modelling efforts using the $s$-$d$ model, which effectively reproduce our results and allow us to explain the behavior in terms of the temporal profile of the spin current.

We have studied the laser induced ultrafast quenching of Gd 4f magnetic order in ferrimagnetic Co100-xGdx alloys to highlight the role of the inter-atomic exchange coupling. We have taken advantage of the ultrashort soft X-ray pulses deliver by the femtoslicing beamline at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation source at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin to perform element- and time-resolved X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectroscopy. Our results show that the laser induced quenching of Gd 4f magnetic order occurs on very different time-scales for the Co72Gd28, the Co77Gd23 and the Co79Gd21 alloys. Most of the magnetic moment losses occur within the first picosecond (ps) while the electron distribution is strongly out of equilibrium. After the equilibration of the electrons and lattice temperatures (t > 1 ps), the magnetic losses occur on slower rates that depend on the alloy composition: increasing the Co composition speeds up the demagnetization of Gd 4f sublattice. The strength of the inter-atomic exchange coupling which depends on composition, determines the efficiency of the angular momentum flow from the Gd 4f spin towards the lattice. Our results are in qualitative agreements with the predictions of the microscopic three temperatures model for ferrimagnetic alloys.

We theoretically investigate laser-induced spin transport in metallic magnetic heterostructures using an effective spin transport description that treats itinerant electrons and thermal magnons on an equal footing. Electron-magnon scattering is included and taken as the driving force for ultrafast demagnetization. We assume that in the low-fluence limit the magnon system remains in a quasi-equilibrium, allowing a transient nonzero magnon chemical potential. In combination with the diffusive transport equations for the itinerant electrons, the description is used to chart the full spin dynamics within the heterostructure. In agreement with recent experiments, we find that in case the spin-current-receiving material includes an efficient spin dissipation channel, the interfacial spin current becomes directly proportional to the temporal derivative of the magnetization. Based on an analytical calculation, we discuss that other relations between the spin current and magnetization may arise in case the spin-current-receiving material displays inefficient spin-flip scattering. Finally, we discuss the role of (interfacial) magnon transport and show that, a priori, it cannot be neglected. However, its significance strongly depends on the system parameters.

Optically induced spin currents have proven to be useful in spintronics applications, allowing for sub-ps all-optical control of magnetization. However, the mechanism responsible for their generation is still heavily debated. Here we use the excitation of spin-current induced THz spin-waves in noncollinear bilayer structures to directly study optical spin-currents in the time domain. We measure a significant laser-fluence dependence of the spin-wave phase, which can quantitatively be explained assuming the spin current is proportional to the time derivative of the magnetization. Measurements of the absolute spin-wave phase, supported by theoretical calculations and micromagnetic simulations, suggest that a simple ballistic transport picture is sufficient to properly explain spin transport in our experiments and that the damping-like optical STT dominates THz spin-wave generation. Our findings suggest laser-induced demagnetization and spin-current generation share the same microscopic origin.

We discuss a joint microscopic theory for the laser-induced magnetization dynamics and spin transport in magnetic heterostructures based on the $s$-$d$ interaction. Angular momentum transfer is mediated by scattering of itinerant $s$ electrons with the localized ($d$ electron) spins. We use the corresponding rate equations and focus on a spin one-half $d$ electron system, leading to a simplified analytical expression for the dynamics of the local magnetization that is coupled to an equation for the non-equilibrium spin accumulation of the $s$ electrons. We show that this description converges to the microscopic three-temperature model in the limit of a strong $s$-$d$ coupling. The equation for the spin accumulation is used to introduce diffusive spin transport. The presented numerical solutions show that during the laser-induced demagnetization in a ferromagnetic metal a short-lived spin accumulation is created that counteracts the demagnetization process. Moreover, the spin accumulation leads to the generation of a spin current at the interface of a ferromagnetic and non-magnetic metal. Depending on the specific magnetic system, both local spin dissipation and interfacial spin transport are able to enhance the demagnetization rate by providing relaxation channels for the spin accumulation that is build up during demagnetization in the ferromagnetic material.

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of all-optical switching by single femtosecond laser pulses. Our experimental results demonstrate that, unlike rare earth-transition metal ferrimagnetic alloys, Pt/Co/[Ni/Co]$_N$/Gd can be switched in the absence of a magnetization compensation temperature, indicative for strikingly different switching conditions. In order to understand the underlying mechanism, we model the laser-induced magnetization dynamics in Co/Gd bilayers and GdCo alloys on an equal footing, using an extension of the microscopic three-temperature model to multiple magnetic sublattices and including exchange scattering. In agreement with our experimental observations, the model shows that Co/Gd bilayers can be switched for an arbitrary thickness of the Co layer, i.e, even far away from compensating the total Co and Gd magnetic moment. We identify the switching mechanism in Co/Gd bilayers as a front of reversed Co magnetization that nucleates at the Co/Gd interface and propagates through the Co layer driven by exchange scattering.

As an application we consider thermally-driven spin injection across an interface between a magnetic metal and a normal metal, i.e., the spin-dependent Seebeck effect. We show that the ratio between magnonic and electronic contribution scales as $\sqrt{T/T_C}T_F/T_C$, with the Fermi temperature $T_F$ and the Curie temperature $T_C$. Since, typically, $T_C \ll T_F$, the magnonic contribution may dominate the thermal spin injection, even though the interface is more transparent for electronic spin current.
