The magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound EuGa$_4$ was investigated using single-crystal neutron diffraction with the time-of-flight (TOF) Laue technique on the new diffractometer SENJU at MLF of J-PARC. In spite of high neutron absorption of Eu, a vast number of diffraction spots were observed without isotope enrichment. The magnetic reflections were appeared at the positions with the diffraction indices of $h+k+l{\neq}2n$ below 16 K, indicating that the ordering vector is ${\bf q}=(0~0~0)$. Continuous evolution of magnetic reflection intensity below $T_{\rm N}$ follows a squared Brillouin function for $S$=7/2. By adopting a wavelength-dependent absorption collection, the magnetic structure of EuGa$_4$ was revealed that a nearly full magnetic moment of 6.4$~μ_{\rm B}$ of Eu lies within the basal plane of the lattice. The present study reveals a well-localized divalent Eu magnetism in EuGa$_4$ and demonstrates a high ability of SENJU to investigate materials with high neutron absorption.

We have demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization in a spin-driven multiferroic CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x = 0.035 can be controlled by the application of uniaxial pressure. Our neutron diffraction and in-situ ferroelectric polarization measurements have revealed that the pressure dependence of the ferroelectric polarization is explained by repopulation of three types of magnetic domains originating from the trigonal symmetry of the crystal. We conclude that the spin-driven anisotropic lattice distortion and the fixed relationship between the directions of the magnetic modulation wave vector and the ferroelectric polarization are the keys to this spin-mediated piezoelectric effect.

By means of neutron scattering measurements, we have investigated spin-wave excitation in a collinear four-sublattice (4SL) magnetic ground state of a triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO2, which has been of recent interest as a strongly frustrated magnet, a spin-lattice coupled system and a multiferroic. To avoid mixing of spin-wave spectrum from magnetic domains having three different orientations reflecting trigonal symmetry of the crystal structure, we have applied uniaxial pressure on [1-10] direction of a single crystal CuFeO2. By elastic neutron scattering measurements, we have found that only 10 MPa of the uniaxial pressure results in almost 'single domain' state in the 4SL phase. We have thus performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements using the single domain sample, and have identified two distinct spin- wave branches. The dispersion relation of the upper spin-wave branch cannot be explained by the previous theoretical model [R. S. Fishman: J. Appl. Phys. 103 (2008) 07B109]. This implies the importance of the lattice degree of freedom in the spin-wave excitation in this system, because the previous calculation neglected the effect of the spin-driven lattice distortion in the 4SL phase. We have also discussed relationship between the present results and the recently discovered "electromagnon" excitation.

Manganese phosphide MnP has been investigated for decades because of its rich magnetic phase diagram. It is well known that the MnP exhibits the ferromagnetic phase transition at $\Tc=292$ K and the helical magnetic phase below $\TN=47$ K at zero field. Recently, a novel magnetic phase transition was observed at $T^* = 282$ K when the magnetic field is lower than 5 Oe. However, the nature of the new phase has not been illuminated yet. In order to reveal it, we performed the AC and the DC magnetization measurements for a single crystal MnP at very low field. A divergent behavior of the real and the imaginary part of the AC susceptibility and a sharp increase of the DC magnetization was observed at $T^*$, indicating the magnetic phase transition at $T^*$. Furthermore a peculiar temperature hysteresis was observed: namely, the magnetization depends on whether cooling sample to the temperature lower than $\TN$ or not before the measurements. This hysteresis phenomenon suggests the complicated nature of the new phase and a strong relation between the magnetic state of the new phase and the helical structure.

The pressure ($p$) -- temperature ($T$) phase diagram for microscopic magnetism in the multiferroic compound HoMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ was established using neutron diffraction measurements under a hydrostatic pressure up to 1.25 GPa. At ambient pressure, incommensurate--commensurate--incommensurate magnetic phase transitions occur successively with decreasing temperature. Upon applying pressure, the incommensurate phase at the lowest temperature almost decreases and the commensurate phase appears. The $p$ -- $T$ phase diagram established shows excellent agreement with the recently reported $p$ -- $T$ dielectric phase diagram, where ferroelectricity is induced by applying pressure. We also found that the $p$ -- $T$ magnetic phase diagram is quite similar to the previously obtained magnetic field-temperature phase diagram.

We measured two magnetic modes with finite and discrete energies in an antiferromagnetic ordered phase of a geometrically frustrated magnet MgCr2O4 by single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, and clarified the spatial spin correlations of the two levels: one is an antiferromagnetic hexamer and the other is an antiferromagnetic heptamer. Since these correlation types are emblematic of quasielastic scattering with geometric frustration, our results indicate instantaneous suppression of lattice distortion in an ordered phase by spin-lattice coupling, probably also supported by orbital and charge. The common features in the two levels, intermolecular independence and discreteness of energy, suggest that the spin molecules are interpreted as quasiparticles (elementary excitations with energy quantum) of highly frustrated spins, in analogy with the Fermi liquid approximation.

We have performed a single crystal neutron scattering experiment on Ce0.7La0.3B6 to investigate the order parameter of phase IV microscopically. Below the phase transition temperature 1.5 K of phase IV, weak but distinct superlattice reflections at the scattering vector (h/2,h/2,l/2) (h, l = odd number) have been observed by neutron scattering for the first time. The intensity of the superlattice reflections is stronger for high scattering vectors, which is quite different from the usual magnetic form factor of magnetic dipoles. This result directly evidences that the order parameter of phase IV has a complex magnetization density, consistent with the recent experimental and theoretical prediction in which the order parameter is the magnetic octupoles Tbeta with Gamma5 symmetry of point group Oh. Neutron scattering experiments using short wavelength neutrons, as done in this study, could become a general method to study the high-rank multipoles in f electron systems.

The kagomé ice state, which has a non-vanishing residual entropy well established for the nearest-neighbor spin ice model by the exact solution, has been proved to be realized in the dipolar-interacting spin ice Dy_{2}Ti_{2}O_{7} by observing the characteristic spin correlations. A focus of recent experimental and theoretical studies on heavy fermion systems close to antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical points (QCP) is directed toward revealing the nature of the fixed point, i.e., whether it is an itinerant antiferromagnet [spin density wave (SDW)] type or a locally-critical fixed point. The relevance of the local QCP was proposed to explain the E/T-scaling with an anomalous exponent observed for the AFM QCP of CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1}. In this work, we have investigated an AFM QCP of another archetypal heavy fermion system Ce(Ru_{1-x}Rh_x)_2Si_2 with x = 0 and 0.03 (sim x_c) using single-crystalline neutron scattering. Accurate measurements of the dynamical susceptibility Im[chi(Q,E)] at the AFM wave vector Q = 0.35 c^* have shown that Im[chi(Q,E)] is well described by a Lorentzian and its energy width Gamma(Q), i.e., the inverse correlation time depends on temperature as Gamma(Q) = c_1 + c_2 T^{3/2 +- 0.1}, where c_1 and c_2 are x dependent constants, in low temperature ranges. This critical exponent 3/2 proves that the QCP is controlled by the SDW QCP in three space dimensions studied by the renormalization group and self-consistent renormalization theories.

We report the temperature ($T$) dependence of ferromagnetic Bragg peak intensities and dc magnetization of the superconducting ferromagnet UGe2 under pressure ($P$). We have found that the low-$T$ behavior of the uniform magnetization can be explained by a conventional Stoner model. A functional analysis of the data produces the following results: The ferromagnetic state below a critical pressure can be understood as the perfectly polarized state, in which heavy quasiparticles occupy only majority spin bands. A Stoner gap $Δ(P)$ decreases monotonically with increasing pressure and increases linearly with magnetic field. We show that the present analysis based on the Stoner model is justified by a consistency check, i.e., comparison of density of states at the Fermi energy deduced from the analysis with observed electronic specific heat coeffieients. We also argue the influence of the ferromagnetism on the superconductivity.

This paper, I, presents new results from neutron inelastic scattering experiments on single crystals of UPd2Al3. The focus is on the experimental position whilst the sequel, II, advances theoretical perspectives. We present a detailed and complete characterisation of the wavevector- and energy-dependent magnetisation dynamics in UPd2Al3 as measured by neutron inelastic scattering primarily in the form of extensive surveys in energy-momentum space under a wide range of experimental conditions, and put our observations in context with data that has been previously published by two independent groups. In this way we emphasize the commonality and robust nature of the data which indicate the intricate nature of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of this material. Our results yield unique insight into the low temperature ground state which exhibits a microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity making UPd2Al3 one of the most accessible heavy-fermion superconductors that can be fully characterised by neutron spectroscopy.
