Magnetic materials with negative spin polarization have attracted attention for their potential to increase the design freedom of spintronic devices. This study investigated the effects of off-stoichiometry on the atomic ordering, microstructure, and magneto-transport properties in Mn2+xV1-xGa (x = -0.2, 0, +0.2, +0.4) Heusler alloy films, which are predicted to have large negative spin polarization derived from a pseudo band gap in the majority spin channel. The Mn2+xV1-xGa films epitaxially grown on MgO(001) substrates exhibits variations of B2 and L21 order with the Mn concentration. A high-quality L21 ordered film was achieved in the Mn-rich composition (x = +0.2) with B2 and L21 order parameters of 0.97 and 0.86, respectively, and a saturation magnetization of 1.4 μB/f.u, which agrees the Slater-Pauling rule. Scanning transmission electron microscopy observations showed that B2 and L21 phases coexist in Mn-poor and stoichiometric films, while the L21 phase is dominant in the Mn-rich film with small amounts of Mn-V and Mn-Ga disorders, as revealed by laboratory and anomalous X-ray diffraction. Combined first-principles calculations and anisotropic magnetoresistance analysis confirm that the addition of excess Mn preserves the high spin polarization by suppressing the formation of detrimental antisites of V atoms occupying Mn sites. Therefore, the Mn-rich composition is promising for negatively spin-polarized charge injection in Mn2VGa-based spintronic applications.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the oxygen (O) $K$-edge were performed to investigate the magnetic polarization of ligand O atoms in the weak ferromagnetic (WFM) phase of the Ir perovskite compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. With the onset of the WFM phase below $T_{\rm N}\simeq240$ K, XMCD signals corresponding to XAS peaks respectively identified as originating from the magnetic moments of apical and planar oxygen (O$_{\rm A}$ and O$_{\rm P}$) in the IrO$_6$ octahedra were observed. The observation of magnetic moments at O$_{\rm A}$ sites is consistent (except for the relative orientation) with that suggested by prior muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiment in the non-collinear antiferromagnetic (NC-AFM) phase below $T_{\rm M}\approx100$ K. Assuming that the O$_{\rm A}$ magnetic moment observed by $μ$SR is also responsible for the corresponding XMCD signal, the magnetic moment of O$_{\rm P}$ is estimated to be consistent with the previous $μ$SR result. Since the O$_{\rm A}$ XMCD signal is mainly contributed by Ir 5$d$ $zx$ and $yz$ orbitals which also hybridize with O$_{\rm P}$, it is inferred that the relatively large O$_{\rm P}$ magnetic moment is induced by Ir 5$d$ $xy$ orbitals. Moreover, the inversion of O$_{\rm A}$ moments relative to Ir moments between the two magnetic phases revealed by XMCD suggests the presence of competing magnetic interactions for O$_{\rm A}$, with which the ordering of O$_{\rm A}$ moments in the NC-AFM phase may be suppressed to $T_{\rm M}$.

A recent study demonstrated that the insertion of an ultra-thin LiF layer between the Fe and MgO layers enhances PMA significantly. In this study, we perform x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements on Fe/LiF/MgO multilayers to reveal the origin of the PMA enhancement. We find that the LiF insertion increases the orbital-magnetic-moment anisotropy and thus the magnetic anisotropy energy. We attribute the origin of this orbital-magnetic-moment-anisotropy enhancement to the stronger electron localization and electron-electron correlation or the better interface quality with fewer defects.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a micro-focused beam spot (micro-ARPES) is becoming a powerful tool to elucidate key electronic states of exotic quantum materials. We have developed a versatile micro-ARPES system based on synchrotron radiation beam focused with a Kirkpatrick-Baez mirror optics. The mirrors are monolithically installed on a stage, which is driven with five-axes motion, and are vibrationally separated from the ARPES measurement system. Spatial mapping of the Auphotolithography pattern on Si signifies the beam spot size of 10 $μ$m (horizontal) x 12 $μ$m (vertical) at the sample position, which is well suited to resolve the fine structure in local electronic states. Utilization of the micro beam and the high precision sample motion system enables the accurate spatially resolved band-structure mapping, as demonstrated by the observation of a small band anomaly associated with tiny sample bending near the edge of a cleaved topological insulator single crystal.

We have studied the Co layer thickness dependences of magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and orbital moment anisotropy (OMA) in W/Co/Pt trilayers, in order to clarify their correlations with each other. We find that the MCA favors magnetization along the film normal and monotonically increases with decreasing effective magnetic layer thickness ($t_\mathrm{eff}$). The magnitude of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange constant ($|D|$) increases with decreasing $t_\mathrm{eff}$ until $t_\mathrm{eff} \sim$1 nm, below which $|D|$ decreases. The MCA and $|D|$ scale with $1/t_\mathrm{eff}$ for $t_\mathrm{eff}$ larger than $\sim$1 nm, indicating an interfacial origin. The increase of MCA with decreasing $t_\mathrm{eff}$ continues below $t_\mathrm{eff}$ $\sim$ 1 nm, but with a slower rate. To clarify the cause of the $t_\mathrm{eff}$ dependences of MCA and DMI, the OMA of Co in W/Co/Pt trilayers is studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). We find non-zero OMA when $t_\mathrm{eff}$ is smaller than $\sim$0.8 nm. The OMA increases with decreasing $t_\mathrm{eff}$ more rapidly than what is expected from the MCA, indicating that factors other than OMA contribute to the MCA at small $t_\mathrm{eff}$. The $t_\mathrm{eff}$ dependence of the OMA also suggests that $|D|$ at $t_\mathrm{eff}$ smaller than $\sim$1 nm is not related to the OMA at the interface. We propose that the growth of Co on W results in a strain and/or texture that reduces the interfacial DMI, and, to some extent, MCA at small $t_\mathrm{eff}$.

To investigate the relationship between the charge redistribution and ferromagnetism at the heterointerface between perovskite transition-metal oxides LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) and LaMnO$_3$ (LMO), we performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements. In the LNO/LMO heterostructures with asymmetric charge redistribution, the electrons donated from Mn to Ni ions are confined within one monolayer (ML) of LNO at the interface, whereas holes are distributed over 3-4 ML on the LMO side. A detailed analysis of the Ni-$L_{2,3}$ and Mn-$L_{2,3}$ XMCD spectra reveals that Ni magnetization is induced only by the Ni$^{2+}$ ions in the 1 ML LNO adjacent to the interface, while the magnetization of Mn ions is increased in the 3-4 ML LMO of the interfacial region. The characteristic length scale of the emergent (increased) interfacial ferromagnetism of the LNO (LMO) layers is in good agreement with that of the charge distribution across the interface, indicating a close relationship between the charge redistribution due to the interfacial charge transfer and the ferromagnetism of the LNO/LMO interface. Furthermore, the XMCD spectra clearly demonstrate that the vectors of induced magnetization of both ions are aligned ferromagnetically, suggesting that the delicate balance between the exchange interactions occurring inside each layer and across the interface may induce the canted ferromagnetism of Ni$^{2+}$ ions, resulting in weak magnetization in the 1 ML LNO adjacent to the interface.

A room-temperature skyrmion-hosting compound Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ has been examined by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant small-angle scattering and extended reference holography. An element-selective study was performed by exciting the $2p$-to-$3d$ transitions near Co and Mn $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. By utilizing the coherence of soft X-ray beams the element-specific real-space distribution of local magnetization at different temperatures has been reconstructed using iterative phase retrieval and holography with extended reference. It was shown that the magnetic moments of Co and Mn are ferromagnetically coupled and exhibit similar magnetic patterns. Both imaging methods provide a real-space resolution of 30 nm and allowed to record a magnetic texture in the temperature range between $T\,=\,20$ K and $T\,=120\,$ K, demonstrating the elongation of the skyrmions along the principal crystallographic axes at low temperatures. Micromagnetic simulations have shown that such deformation is driven by decreasing ratio of symmetric exchange interaction to antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the system and effect of the cubic anisotropy.

The strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt has been the subject of extensive studies for a long time. However, it is not known which element, Fe or Pt, mainly contributes to the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE). We have investigated the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moments of Fe 3$d$ and Pt 5$d$ electrons in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt thin films by Fe and Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements for samples with various degrees of long-range chemical order $S$. Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD showed that the orbital magnetic moment was larger when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, and that the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increased with $S$. Pt $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD also showed that the orbital magnetic moment was smaller when the magnetic field was applied perpendicular to the film than parallel to it, opposite to the Fe $L_{2,3}$-edge XMCD results although the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment increases with $S$ like the Fe edge. These results are qualitatively consistent with the first-principles calculation by Solovyev ${\it et\ al.}$ [Phys. Rev. B $\bf{52}$, 13419 (1995).], which also predicts the dominant contributions of Pt 5$d$ to the magnetic anisotropy energy rather than Fe 3$d$ due to the strong spin-orbit coupling and the small spin splitting of the Pt 5$d$ bands in $L{\rm1_0}$-ordered FePt.

The electronic structure of nanographene in pristine and fluorinated activated carbon fibers (ACFs) have been investigated with near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and compared with magnetic properties we reported on previously. In pristine ACFs in which magnetic properties are governed by non-bonding edge states of the π-electron, a pre-peak assigned to the edge state was observed below the conduction electron π* peak close to the Fermi level in NEXAFS. Via the fluorination of the ACFs, an extra peak, which was assigned to the σ-dangling bond state, was observed between the pre-peak of the edge state and the π* peak in the NEXAFS profile. The intensities of the extra peak correlate closely with the spin concentration created upon fluorination. The combination of the NEXAFS and magnetic measurement results confirms the coexistence of the magnetic edge states of π-electrons and dangling bond states of σ-electrons on fluorinated nanographene sheets.

Even without explicit use of gauge fixing, we can define the maximal abelian projection by introducing a ``gluonic Higgs field'' phi(x), whose hedgehog singularities lead to monopoles. From infrared abelian dominance and infrared monopole condensation, infrared QCD is describable with the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory. In relation to the color-flux-tube picture for baryons, we study the three-quark (3Q) ground-state potential V_3Q in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level, with the smearing technique for enhancement of the ground-state component. With accuracy better than a few %, V_3Q is well described by a sum of the two-body Coulomb part and the three-body linear confinement part sigma_3Q L_min, where L_min denotes the minimal value of the total length of the color flux tube linking the three quarks. Comparing with the Q-barQ potential, we find a universal feature of the string tension and the OGE result for the Coulomb coefficient.

We show the construction of the dual superconducting theory for the confinement mechanism from QCD in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge using the lattice QCD Monte Carlo simulation. We find that essence of infrared abelian dominance is naturally understood with the off-diagonal gluon mass $m_{\rm off} \simeq 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ induced by the MA gauge fixing. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon amplitude is forced to be small, and the off-diagonal gluon phase tends to be random. As the mathematical origin of abelian dominance for confinement, we demonstrate that the strong randomness of the off-diagonal gluon phase leads to abelian dominance for the string tension. From the monopole current in the MA gauge, we extract the dual gluon field $B_μ$ and estimate the dual gluon mass as $m_B \simeq $ 0.5 GeV. The QCD-monopole structure is also investigated in terms of off-diagonal gluons. From the lattice QCD in the MA gauge, the dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory can be constructed as a realistic infrared effective theory based on QCD.

The essence of the infrared abelian dominance in the MA gauge is physically explained with the generation of the off-diagonal gluon mass $\Meff \simeq 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ induced by the MA gauge fixing, and the off-diagonal gluon mass generation would predict general infrared abelian dominance in QCD in the MA gauge. We report also the off-diagonal gluon propagator at finite temperature.

The Monte Carlo simulation is performed on the $12^3 \times 24$ lattice with $2.2 \le β\le 2.4$, and also on the $16^4$ and $20^4$ lattices with $2.3 \le β\le 2.4$. In the MA gauge, the diagonal gluon component $A_μ^3$ shows long-range propagation, and infrared abelian dominance is found for the gluon propagator. In the MA gauge, the off-diagonal gluon component $A_μ^\pm$ behaves as a massive vector boson with the effective mass $M_{\rm off} \simeq 1.2$ GeV in the region of $r \gsim 0.2$ fm, and its propagation is limited within short range. We conjecture that infrared abelian dominance can be interpreted as infrared inactivity of the off-diagonal gluon due to its large mass generation induced by the MA gauge fixing.

In the MA gauge, off-diagonal gluon components are forced to be small, and the off-diagonal angle variable $χ_μ(s)$ tends to be random. Within the random-variable approximation for $χ_μ(s)$, we analytically prove the perimeter law of the off-diagonal gluon contribution to the Wilson loop in the MA gauge, which leads to abelian dominance on the string tension. To clarify the origin of abelian dominance for the long-range physics, we study the charged-gluon propagator in the MA gauge using the lattice QCD, and find that the effective mass $m_{ch} \simeq 0.9 {\rm GeV}$ of the charged gluon is induced by the MA gauge fixing. In the MA gauge, there appears the macroscopic network of the monopole world-line covering the whole system, which would be identified as monopole condensation at a large scale. To prove monopole condensation in the field-theoretical manner, we derive the inter-monopole potential from the dual Wilson loop in the monopole part of QCD, which carries the nonperturbative QCD aspects, in the MA gauge. The dual gluon mass is evaluated as $m_B \simeq $0.5GeV in the monopole part in the infrared region, which is the evidence of the dual Higgs mechanism by monopole condensation.

In the MA gauge, there appears the global network of the monopole world-line covering the whole system, which would be identified as monopole condensation at a large scale. In the monopole part, which carries the nonperturbative aspects of QCD, the dual gluon mass is evaluated as $m_B \simeq $0.5GeV, which is the evidence of the dual Higgs mechanism by monopole condensation. As for the monopole structure, the large fluctuation of off-diagonal gluons remains around the monopole in the MA gauge, and large cancellation occurs between the diagonal and off-diagonal action densities to keep the total QCD action finite. The charged-gluon rich region around the QCD-monopole would provide the effective monopole size as the critical scale of the abelian projected QCD. Instantons are expected to appear in the charged-gluon rich region around the monopole world-line in the MA gauge, which leads to the local correlation between monopoles and instantons.
