We developed the off-lattice Eden model to simulate the growth of bacterial colonies in the three-dimensional geometry of a Petri dish. In contrast to its two-dimensional counterpart, our model takes a three-dimensional set of possible growth directions and employs additional constraints on growth, which are limited by access to the nutrient layer. We rigorously tested the basic off-lattice Eden implementation against literature data for a planar cluster. We then extended it to three-dimensional growth. Our model successfully demonstrated the non-trivial dependency of the cluster morphology, non-monotonous dependency of the cluster density, and power law of the thickness of the boundary layer of clusters as a function of the nutrient layer height. Moreover, we revealed the fractal nature of all the clusters by investigating their fractal dimensions. Our density results allowed us to estimate the basic transport properties, namely the permeability and tortuosity of the bacterial colonies.

We investigate the very onset of the inertial regime in the fluid flow at the pore level in a three-dimensional, disordered, highly porous media. We analyze the flow structure in a wide range of Reynolds numbers starting from 0.01 up to 100. We focus on qualitative and quantitative changes that appear with increasing Reynolds number. To do that, we investigate the weakening of the channeling effect, defined as the existence of preferred flow paths in a system. We compute tortuosity, spatial kinetic energy localization, and the pore-space volume fraction containing negative streamwise velocity to assess accompanying changes quantitatively. Our results of tortuosity and participation number derivatives show that the very onset of inertia is apparent for Reynolds number Re $\sim 0.1$, an order of magnitude lower than indicated by analyzing relations of friction factor with the Reynolds number. Moreover, we show that the vortex structures appear at Reynolds number two orders of magnitude higher than the onset of inertia.

We propose a setup for measuring visible and near-visible internal Smith-Purcell radiation and Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation, based on silica and silicon, and perform quantitative numerical analysis of its radiation efficiency. We calculate the total radiated energy per electron and the spectral distribution of different radiation orders, taking into account material dispersion and absorption. For an optimized silica grating of 200 micrometer length, the total radiated energy reaches 2~eV per electron for 2 MeV electrons. Above the Cherenkov threshold, in most cases the energy of Cherenkov diffraction radiation is several times higher than the energy of internal Smith-Purcell radiation, but for some geometries and frequency ranges first or second order radiation may dominate over Cherenkov radiation (zeroth order). Radiation up to the 4th order is detected in the simulation. The spectrum of Cherenkov radiation is highly resonant, with local minima for frequencies where maxima of the other radiation orders occur. The spectrum of Cherenkov radiation takes a frequency comb-like shape for a uniform layer of Si on SiO2 substrate, due to a Fabry-Perot effect occurring for the evanescent field of the moving electron. The proposed setup could become a prototype of a non-invasive particle beam monitor for both conventional and laser particle accelerators.

Measurements of magnetotransport in SnTe/PbTe heterojunctions grown by the MBE technique on (001) undoped CdTe substrates were performed. At low magnetic fields, quantum corrections to conductivity were observed that may be attributed to the presence of topological states at the junction interface. For a sample with 5 nm thick SnTe layer, the data analysis suggests that midgap states are actually gapped. However, the phase coherence effects in 10 nm and 20 nm SnTe/PbTe samples are fully explained assuming existence of gapless Dirac cones. Magnetotransport at higher magnetic fields is described in the framework of mobility spectrum analysis (MSA). We demonstrate that the electron- and hole-like peaks observed simultaneously for all SnTe/PbTe heterojunctions may originate from the concave and convex parts of the energy isosurface for topological states -- and not from the existence of quasiparticles both carrying negative and positive charges. This interpretation is supported by numerical calculations of conductivity tensor components for gapless (100) Dirac cones, performed within a classical model and based on the solutions of Boltzmann transport equation. Our approach shows the feasibility of MSA in application to magnetotransport measurements on topological matter.

In this paper we report on the observation of very high and narrow magnetoconductance peaks which we attribute to the transition to quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHFM) state occurring at the edges of the sample. We show that the expected spatial degeneracy of chiral edge channels is spontaneously lifted in agreement with theoretical studies performed within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We indicate also that separated edge currents which flow in parallel, may nevertheless cross at certain points, giving rise to the formation of topological defects or one-dimensional magnetic domains. Furthermore, we find that such local crossing of chiral channels can be induced on demand by coupling spin states of a Landau level to different current terminals and applying a DC source-drain voltage.
