Dominic Greene

Dominic Greene is the main antagonist of the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace. He is an agent of the terrorist group Quantum, which is trying to install a dictator in Bolivia so they can have control of the country's water supply; he is also one of the people responsible for the death of James Bond's lover, Vesper Lynd.

He is portrayed by Matthew Amalric.

Overview[]

Greene is the CEO of Greene Planet, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing pollution and environmental destruction. His public face as a philanthropist is only a front for his real occupation: a high-ranking agent of the terrorist group Quantum. As such, he is responsible for dozens of murders and assassinations, several kidnappings, and extorting classified information out of female intelligence operatives through his henchman, Yusef Qabira. He also reveals that, as a teenager, he tortured and murdered a female schoolteacher who rejected his advances.

His scheme involves installing the exiled dictator General Medrano as the new president of Bolivia, in return for the country's water supply rights. It is also implied that he is at least somewhat responsible for Vesper Lynd, MI-6 agent James Bond's lover, betraying her country in the previous film, Casino Royale; Qabira had seduced her and then pretended to have been kidnapped so that Greene (or someone working for him) could threaten to kill him unless she helped Quantum recover money it used to fund terrorism through its agent Le Chiffre. She ultimately committed suicide.

In Quantum of Solace[]

Greene sleeps with Bolivian national Camille Montes, before finding out that she is in fact a member of Bolivian Intelligence who is using him to meet and kill Medrano, who murdered her entire family years earlier. He sends an assassin to kill her, but Bond, who is on a mission to destroy Quantum and avenge Vesper, kills the assassin first and saves Camille from Medrano, who is about to rape and murder her.

Bond follows Greene to Bregenz, Austria, and interrupts a meeting between him and other Quantum agents held during a performance of Tosca. Bond then throws one of Greene's henchmen off the roof of the opera house; when the man lands on Greene's car, injured but alive, Greene has him killed to prevent him from revealing the organization's secrets. He then meets with CIA agents Felix Leiter and Gregg Beam, and convinces Beam to have Bond killed, over Leiter's objections.

Greene throws a fundraising party in a Bolivian eco-hotel to tout Greene Planet's newest environmental initiative, which is in fact a ruse designed to help him and Medrano steal the country's water. Camille confronts him during the party, provoking him into trying to kill her; Bond saves her once again, however. Greene later exacts revenge by having MI-6 agent (and Bond's latest lover) Strawberry Fields killed, ordering his men to drown her in crude oil.

After learning about Greene's plan, Bond and Camille infiltrate another eco-hotel, where Greene is negotiating with Medrano. When Medrano refuses to pay the amount Quantum wants for the country's water rights, Greene threatens to have him killed; intimidated, Medrano signs over the water rights, and becomes the new president of Bolivia.

Bond and Camille interrupt the meeting by starting a fire that soon consumes the motel. After Camille kills Medrano, Bond forces Greene to tell him everything he knows about Quantum and Vesper's death, and then leaves him out in the middle of the Bolivian desert with only a quart of motor oil. At the end of the film, Bond's superior M tells him that Greene has been found dead with two bullets in his skull and motor oil in his stomach.

Years later, in the Bond film Spectre, Ernst Stavro Blofeld tells Bond that Greene was an agent of his titular criminal organization, and that Quantum was merely one of SPECTRE's subsidiaries.
