Drinking and driving
With a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.06 g/100 mL, a driver is twice as likely to die in a road crash as one with no alcohol. Risk rises rapidly with further increases in BAC.
In order to comply with a BAC maximum of 0.05 g/100 mL for driving, a general guideline for an average healthy person is that:
...
NB: Some people of small build, or who are ill, or who have concurrent medical problems or who are on medication (e.g. sedatives), will need to drink less or not at all.
In some countries/regions a medical practitioner is obliged to report to the Driver Licensing Authority a driver who is repeatedly drinking to the extent that their driving ability is impaired or is unfit to drive. Medical practitioners need to weigh the benefits of patient mobility with the increased risk posed to other road users and make themselves aware of local guidelines.
