Original reference for AFAM is a 1994 APL from Rabe and Arnold. I am unaware of a reference to this technique in 1989 and none was provided by the previous editor. I have updated the text accordingly. This article could use considerable work. A better description of the technique should be provided and a mention of the very similar methods of contact resonance AFM and ultrasonic force microscopy should be discussed.
