Logline: In a little-known Mexican festival where men transform into women, a colorful group of queer dancers races to prepare for the big night despite facing violent resistance.

Elevator Pitch:

In a little-known Mexican festival where men transform into women, a colorful group of queer dancers races to prepare for the big night, despite facing violent resistance. “Our Fire Blooms” is the story of a group of gay men and trans women who won’t let anything stop them from being a part of their town’s tradition. Featuring an all-female film crew, this is the first character-driven documentary about gay and trans people in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, which became known internationally for its state-sanctioned hate crimes against the LGBT community.

About the Film:

I made this film because we need to break down the wall between queer communities in the U.S. and Mexico. We need stories about LGBT people from around the world­– their hopes and dreams, everyday lives and everyday struggles. We need to challenge stereotypes about latinx identity and sexuality. This film is a powerful tool in the broader fight for LGBT visibility, rights, and happiness. We also need more female and LGBT filmmakers. As a queer woman and independent filmmaker, I have faced many challenges, but the support of a team of women and genderqueer crew members continues to inspire me.

Current Status: Currently in post-production and fundraising to complete the film.
