Delirium (2018)
Dark and twisty psychological thriller
Not sure why there are some terrible reviews about this movie. It was definitely dark and twisty and entertaining. Maybe not a top award winner, but definitely a solid film for entertainment if you like psychological thrillers. I enjoyed it.
Hereditary (2018)
Not a horror movie
I so wanted to believe the hype. It promised to be so much more than it is.
The first part of the film played as a very slow burning and heartbreaking drama. It needed a great deal of editing. It seemed as though a second "horror" part of it was added on as an afterthought. The ending was abrupt and unsatisfying. Very disjointed story and an absolute letdown if you go in expecting to be frightened (which is what I mistakenly did). If it had been marketed as an intense drama, I would be less frustrated.
I gave it a 3 because I thought the acting was quite good, the cinematography was well done, and I was creeped out for about 10 minutes of the film.
I feel shortchanged after believing all the hype. I wanted to go into the movie without biased expectations, so I didn't read any reviews beforehand. I really wish I had, because I would have waited for Netflix.
Primal Rage (2018)
I wanted to like it
After reading some of the mixed reviews on this film, I figured it would be a wildcard. I am a fan of Bigfoot anything, so decided to give it a try. Yes, it is definitely the 80s gore type genre- if that is not your thing you may not enjoy this one. Considering the budget, I actually thought the interpretation of Bigfoot was creative - something of a Bigfoot-meets- Groot costume. All in all, I personally would have preferred a more subtle /eerie "stalked in the woods" vibe only. I felt like the role of the witch and amount of time the two main characters wasted arguing with the narrow-minded hunters early on just detracted from the story. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but don't recommend planning your Saturday movie night around it. But again, that's just me. Just not scary.
The Ritual (2017)
Heart-pounding kind of horror
As horror movies go, this is one of best I have seen in years. I was genuinely afraid watching this film- and that is a rarity for me in this genre. The setting was perfectly eerie-. what could be scarier than being lost in the haunted/cursed woods? The characters were relatable and the concept of ancient Norse mythology was interesting.
The very end of the movie was a bit cheesy/disappointing, but on the whole this film was well done and thought provoking. My heart was pounding through most of it. Get ready to be scared!
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
Disappointing
Thought this was the worst of the Insidious franchise. Storyline wasn't cohesive, characters weren't well-developed, and it just wasn't scary. This wasn't the worst horror movie I've ever seen, but certainly nowhere near the best.
