Reviews
Pyewacket (2017)
Decent demon/ghost horror
The movie really creates a good spooky climax, with a nice fitting soundtrack and camera work was pretty well done. The characters are well developped and played, especially Nicole Muñoz was amazing as the lead role Lea. The plot is although kept pretty simple. I liked how its made that the audience can sympathise with the lead role and is as confused and shocked as her. I mean, I also believed the demon killed her mother and shapeshifted into her, or controlled her body like in Evil Dead. Also we never really found out, as well as Lea, what the demon did to the lead role's friend who overnighted at hers. Towards the ending the audience slowly begins to realize that its really her mother, not the demon and gets shocked at the end when the cop confirms it.
What was really well done, the demon tricked her to made her kill her own mother as she wished initially. So the body in the forest was the demon who wanted to make her believe her mother is dead and her real mother is the demon.
Finally not that I mind the demon winning at the end but the ending seemed just a bit too abrupt.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)
The terrors of war and suppression
Many people misjudge this movie by comparing it with the book. Looking at the movie independently, I don't think of it as a bad movie. In my opinion its a very great movie that portrays amazingly well the gruesomeness and consequences of totalitarian regimen and how people rise up against their evil dominator and how rebellion is stoked. Both sides use clever propaganda to gain more followers or make the enemy loose hope and loose followers. Katniss has emerged as a symbol of hope and resistance against the Capitol. The movie shows us well how in war every decision made, might it be to save your friends or to create hope by broadcasting powerful speeches, will have a response from the enemy that could result in a loss of more supporters and casualties. It brings to the viewer a much a darker and realistic view on civil war, its terror and suppression as some other movies featuring the same thematic. The movie is a bit more reserved when it comes to action and battles, but focuses more on the psychological aspect.
Beyond Skyline (2017)
Good sequel
After the pretty disappointing first Skyline they brought up a decent sequel.
The plot is ok but sometimes a bit improbable, character development was decent and the visual effects were great. In the ending boss fight were some awesome action sequences. (top cgi effects)
What bothered me was that they came up pretty easily with a solution on how to fight a supposedly technologically and intellectual advanced species. The aliens seemed a bit dumb. And since we only see the lead alien doing anything (from fighting in front line himself and piloting the main space ship, its hard to believe that its about a world wide invasion and that 1 alien doing almost all the work like a one man army except some flying drones.
Sometimes it also seems like it got some inspiration from transformers. The ending of the movie, with the space warfare scene was a bit stupid and could have been just avoided.
To conclude, the movie beats its predecessor but it sometimes fails in making us care for the characters. However it has top action scenes and visuals
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Not that bad as everyone says
Since firstly the Halloween saga was intended to have a different story in each new movie, they let Michael Myers out of the story and came up with a rather interesting plot.
It starts very mysterious and lets you think about whats going on. The lead character starts investigating and wants to find out who is behind the strange murders.
It later leads to a halloween mask manufracturer which is managed by the main villain who's evil plan is to kill all kids by his masks that kill their wearers when a kinda transmission is made via tv on halloween. The villain's role was kinda well played in my opinion.
The villain's henchmen are some kind of androids like from the Alien movies which let me confused if its a science fiction movie or a fantasy movie since the killing mecanism of the masks is some kind of black magic.
During the movie there is a good suspense build up, the acting was ok, but not great. The ending scene where the lead character screamed "Stop it!" was the best part. It has surprisingly compared to the other movies a bad ending, meaning the villain wins (posthuman).
After all, I think the concept and idea was great but it wasn't executed well enough. Some times it was a bit exaggerated, and could not been taken serious.
If it were better executed I would have given it a 6 or 7/10
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Michael is back
After the in my opinion underrated part 3, they continued with 4th installment bringing Michael back. It begins with Michael well being alive escaping during a transfer to Smith Grove. Dr Loomis also having almost noting but a little scar after being exposed to a huge explosion in part 2 which would be improbable to survive, immediatly chases Michael on his path to Haddonfield.
The role of Jamie, Michaels main target, was very well played by young Danielle Harris. The other characters also were not bad played. You also see Tommy and Lindsey, the kids from the first movie reappear.
What bothered me a bit was during Michael killingspree it almost seems like he has the ability to vanish like Batman or teleport (for example at the gas station or in the truck in the ending scene)
The shootout at the end at Michael was satisfying to see, similar to the one in Jason lives.
My opinion on the ending was a bit mixed, it lets you play with the thought that in the sequels Jamie goes around in a mask killing people. Although in the following sequel Jamie isn't the new Michael.
But Donald Pleasence's "No, noo, noooo" to the scene was amazing!
I'd give it a 5,5/10 if you could rate in decimals
The Predator (2018)
Not outstanding
First off, it was very outputting that the trailer already spoilered so much of the plot.
To begin with, the movie's opening is very similar from the one from Star Wars ep4, a spaceship is chasing another one and the passenger uses an emergency capsule to escape and crashes on earth. Immediatly a couple of soldiers investigate the crash, where it comes to a fight in which the crashed predator got shot unconscious by one of his own guns that a soldier fired accidentally, what leaded into the capture of the predator.
To me it feels like the predators tech is way too easily to use by humans, which would be highly improbable. An alien species capable of interstellar travel and ability to create worm holes (film's opening) surely has tech that lays beyond our understandings. They don't even have the slightest security on their weapons, see the hero's kid could easily access the alien computer. The hero can without reading any instruction manual use the cloaking devise. Or in later scenes people randomly use predator guns to fight against the big predator.
Which leads us to the next point. The concept of the dna splicing and creating more powerful killing machines by collecting dna of individuals with special abilities. I think its not the best idea, it was like only the trend to "go bigger in the next film" like in Independence day 2, "lets get a bigger alien ship, that will impress audience". Thats not the way to impress the audience. If I speak for myself or many others, most people would have preferred to see a movie that explores more the predator society or even a sequel to Predators.
Then there is the main characters squat, honestly I don't have anything against humor but I it almost got to the point I was thinking "Is this a comedy or what". The movie doesn't seem so tough and serious as the first 2 movies, it seemed more comic like to me.
Despite that, if you like gore you will like the film. It has surprisingly in comparison to the other movies more kills and they are much bloodier. I especially liked the scene when the crashed predator escapes the research facility and goes carnage. The fight scenes are pretty well done.
The predators also seem way smarter and much more agile and fast, especially if you compare with Predators (2010) where the predators were easy to fool and seemed like dumb animals with guns.
Halloween (2018)
Pretty average, flat story
The movie did not really take my breath. The movie begins with a couple of journalists visit Michael Myers in the Asylum for a report, which was a very good opening in my opinion. The scene where the journalists await a reaction from Michael while showing him his mask was great.
Actually, all in all I liked the performances of the actors very much, filming was also great. It created a nice creepy atmosphere where is fitted. Some fake jump scares should have been kept out.
I also liked that I saw some parallels to Terminator 2's character Sarah Conner. Laurie Strode was known as a shy scaredy teen in the first movie and now she feels like a badass warrior with combat and gun experience, like Sarah Connor. The hunter becomes the hunted, it references the scene from the first movie where Michael fell out of the window to the ground and then disappears got inversed with Laurie falling.
Michael instead seems not focused on Laurie only as in the first movie but stalks and kills random people and doesn't even seem to go for Laurie. Here its her who chases Michael.
About the violence and kills, its way less bloody and dark as in its predecessor from Rob Zombie.
If you see the movie's storyline after, it seems like a very flat and idea-lacking plot. To be part 11 in the franchise, there is nothing new to add. The story is also very easy to predict, like everyone knews in the movie opening that Michaels transfer to another facility will fail and he escapes.
In addition I also didn't really understand the doctors character. He wanted to somehow capture Michael alive and goes so far and kills a cop to protect Michael, but then dies shortly after by the man he wanted to keep alive.
To conclude, Halloween (2018) was not outstanding in my opinion and was slightly better than H20 (hard to compare with Rob Zombies remakes). The storyline disappointed me a bit, but Laurie's character transformation and her hunting down Michael and later killing him like a boss was well done
GoatSucker (2009)
not that great
It was really hard for me to determine if the acting was intentionally so comedic or if it was just plain awful. Was this meant to be a horror film parody or a serious film? The caracters were all exaggerated, for example the blonde chick was way too hysteric to the point it got annoying. The filming and cuts from scene to scene were also not that good, it didn't create any form of scary atmosphere or feeling of horror, many klischees, it only got me some moments of laughter.
