Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three (2024)
One of great comics events turned into incoherent mess
It amazes me how Jeff Wamester still keeps his job as a director for DC animation department at WB. For many years he made abysmal animation effort for the brand so much that it feels like a new normal. WB DC animation used be regarded in such a high manner it saddens to see such works.
Crisis on Infinite Earths was a really weird, but nonetheless important and culturally significant event for comic books history. It never seemed like an easy job to transfer it in animation or live action medium. So for it to succeed it had to at least be gorgeously animated and story wise fulfil the main themes of comics narrative.
But what we got here is a lazy, non coherent work, which removes the most interesting parts of the story and fills in the gaps with terrible animation sequences, a lot of exposition and a bunch of parts that could've been cut out altogether. At the end we get a product that is so boring, that I've fallen asleep a couple of times and had to rewind it.
I was never a really big fan of the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, but I did respect the original authors and how they managed to fill in so much in one story. Having that material should've helped to at least make a coherent story for animation, but what we got is a cheap spit to the face of animation industry, especially for those animators who previously were so successful and hard working in DC department. It's just a shame that after all this time fans got to see the worst kind of imagination of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Physical: 100 (2023)
Somewhat interesting concept - terrible execution
It weird to rate this show. On one hand you have great concept of physically imposing and inspiring people, but than we have incompetent producer who lost all shows credibility by over dramatizing the whole thing. And don't get me started on editing... That guy should be fired. In who's right mind did they think it's necessary to repeat some mediocre reactions and spots from contestants. And it went on and on. Same could be said about sound.
You have such great "ubermenschen" and your main focus is not how strong and capable they are, but what kind of drama you can raise out of them. Sometimes it got so embarrassing I had to fast forward through it (with repetitious shots as well). A I write this short review I don't really understand why I rated it 6 as the quality of is not worth 5. But I guess there is this weird Korean hype going on right now, that even I can't get away from. Will I continue to watch it after 4 episodes? Don't want to, but will do. Because concept alone is pretty interesting and to see so many fit and capable people to compete in weird tournament is somewhat exciting.
But if producers want to keep this game up - they should reconsider how are they approaching this in editing room. For now I'm sure I don't care if there's gonna be another season.
Bill Burr Presents: Friends Who Kill (2022)
Half of good and half of bad
I don't know what really was a purpose of this show, but somehow it seemed like it was half assed or just improvised on a go. At the beginning we got really great stand up sketches by Burr and Wolf and after that the comedy show felt inconsistent with every other act following. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. The occasional reminder of covid felt tired and some of the other comedians just didn't fit in with Burrs energy and concept of comedy which might feel deceitful for viewers who might expect something similar. Don't get me wrong, some of the acts where amazingly good as long as they lasted, but the other half just felt out of place. For whatever it's worth, I'd still recommend for giving it a try.
Sweet Tooth (2021)
A bit disappointed
At first this looked pretty interesting, concept wise. From the start it seemed like a kids show with a little edge on top. I loved first episode and how sweet father/son relationship felt during the apocalypse. Actor playing Gus was a perfect cast. Usually there are some annoying qualities about kids and their struggles in tv, cinema, but Gus felt like a real kid with a very empathetic wisdom to it. And as a guy who worked with kids for some time, it felt real to me.
That being said, after I think third episode everything went down very fast. Script felt weak way too many times and half of the characters were annoying and unbelievable. Many cringy dialogs and narration left me with eyes rolling every few minutes and sometimes seconds. And even before you get all the answers you know what's gonna happen not only about the plot, but sometimes you can guess the dialog. Main villain is some 90s type evil general, who's main goal is to be evil and in power. Lame. The indian doctor is such a poor actor who never misses an opportunity to show his "acting range" by pouting lips and sobbing all the time. Motivations and logic behind the characters (all of them) choices to do certain things seemed unreasonable and stupid. I remember when I was a kid and used to watch 80s and 90s shows and back than felt that same mistakes were made in scripts that made no sense. You can't think that people who watch these shows are so stupid, that they gonna buy into these situations. Although as I scrolled through the reviews it seems that I am wrong and people are quite easily taken by sweet music, scenery and lovable kid actors.
I get it. This show is for kids, although it's rated PG-13. But even 13 year olds are smarter than this. By the end of this show I thought I might give it a 5/10, but felt rather forgiving for the first episode. This show is for kids and for most them I think this will do just fine. But don't try to look for something deep or extraordinary story, there is none.
