Kumail Nanjiani: Beta Male (2013)
This isn't great but his films "The Big Sick" and "Stuber" are!
This starts off laugh out loud (literally) funny in the first few minutes, but then it gets fairly disturbing and not too great. Some of the material is cringe worthy and seems like it'd be better suited for a therapy session than a comedy special designed for entertainment and enjoyment. Rather than this, I recommend Kumail's film "The Big Sick," instead (which he wrote with his wife) that is absolutely comedic genius! It's also a true story. Furthermore, I'd also recommend the action/comedy film "Stuber" in which Kumail stars in the lead role. He's awesome in that one! As for "Beta Male," I did enjoy a bit or two, but unfortunately it went downhill, and I had to fast forward through an ample amount of disappointing content and material that lacked humor for a while. Overall, choosing "The Big Sick" and "Stuber" films over this is the way to go for heaping helpings of hilarious entertainment!
Sam Morril: Up on the Roof (2020)
Raunchy & Gross BUT Maybe One of the Best!
Despite the fact that some of this comic's material is raunchy, gross, and cringe worthy, he just may be one of the top 5 standup comics alive. Morril is wildly creative and absolutely hilarious. His shows offer several laugh out loud moments and extremely sharp and witty wordplay and social commentary. Even when he's grossing out or borderline offending his audience, he manages to often turn it around with funny doses of self deprecating humor. I can't make it through most so called "comedy specials" because I find most stand up comedians to be painfully unfunny and often disgusting and mean spirited on top of that. However, I have found myself eagerly watching every one of Morril's shows that I can track down, because he is a one man laugh riot with a ton of talent. I am glad I stuck it out through some of his raunchy bits and stayed around for the awesome parts that had me cracking up!
Bob Marley: Up Close and Personal (2007)
Well Done and with an Outstanding, Lively Score!
This is an excellent and comprehensive tribute to one of the most famous musicians of all time. It does a fine job depicting his impact, genesis, accomplishments, and untimely demise. The interviews included are well chosen, revealing, and interesting. One aspect that could be improved is they could have omitted when one of the interviewees started giving his own life story and when another started saying he didn't like two of Marley's albums! It also would have been nice to see more interview footage of the man speaking for himself. However, it was very nice to have subtitles included on this production. Unfortunately, many of the documentaries conceived about Marley lack subtitles, but this one contains them from start to finish. Perhaps the best part of this production is the score! This is is because in addition to Marley's music, it features a lively and wonderful reggae style instrumental beat in spots that I don't recall ever hearing before! If you're looking to learn a lot about Bob Marley, including what he stood for and why he was so beloved, this is a very worthwhile documentary.
Bob Marley: Roots of the Man (2018)
Very Worthwhile
This is an excellent and comprehensive portrait of Marley's life, music, and legacy as one of the most famous and revered figures of all time. It does an splendid job depicting his impact, genesis, accomplishments, and untimely demise. The interviews included are well chosen and are very diverse, revealing, and interesting. One critical aspect that could be vastly improved is the narrator. It sounds like a computer generated robot voice. However, it was very nice to have subtitles included on this production. Unfortunately, many of the documentaries conceived about Marley lack subtitles, but this one contains them from start to finish. If you're looking to learn a lot about Bob Marley, including what he stood for and why he was so beloved, this is a very worthwhile documentary.
Sam Morril: You've Changed (2024)
Hilarious!
I didn't care for some of the raunchy content, but I'm glad I stuck it out through those parts, because he has actually become one of the best comedians I've ever seen! A lot of his material made me laugh out loud (literally) and all of this is coming from someone who can't make it through most comedian's specials! I usually shut them off after they fail to make me laugh for the first 10-15 minutes, or they disgust me with low brow content so much in the 1st 5 minutes that I get too turned off to continue. While Morril may have some bits I didn't care for, overall I've found him to be extremely creative, talented, and hilarious! Even when he's borderline offending his audience, he has a witty and endearing knack for self deprecation that ends up being really funny at times as well! If it weren't for some of the raunchy parts, I'd give this a 10. I recommend all of Sam Morril's specials (including Up On the Roof) to those looking for laughs, and I really can't say that about any other comedian other than maybe Jerry Seinfeld. I plan to watch all his specials again in the near future, and I'm already looking forward to the next new one.
Misconceptions (2008)
Funny, Smart, and Positive
This film is funny, insightful, and a joy to watch. The only thing it lacks is a surefire score/soundtrack. However, the vital and beautiful themes of tolerance, love, and unity, combined with some laugh out loud dialogue, still make this truly entertaining and refreshing.
Even the movie's title is a creatively crafted one composed of rich, multiple meanings. The cast, writer, and crew are all deserving of applause for putting together this fine combination of witty humor and positive and relevant ideas.
Surely, there are zealots, homophobes, and racists out there who will despise this film, because they have been taught to hate those different from them. Others may not like a couple of the montages filled with religious music (that's where the fast forward button comes in). In the end though, anyone rating this project poorly is just ridding off "Misconceptions!"
Harmony from the Heart (2022)
A Lovely Valentine's Day Movie
This is a feel good movie for those who appreciate the power of music and who are in the mood for a charming Valentine's Day romance. The acting, writing, directing, and editing all are very professional, entertaining, and well executed. I applaud all involved with this production for creating such an endearing and positive film for this holiday! This is one that I could envision watching every February.
My Other Home (2017)
A Decent Account
This is a nice continuation of the story that was told in "A Kid from Coney Island." I appreciated the depiction of what took place on the court and off. I also enjoyed seeing a talented actress like Loretta Devine playing Steph's mom. However, I would have really liked to have learned more about and seen more of Steph's off the court acclimation to his new country of residence.
