L'argent (1928)
Just not very interesting
Bottom line is do you want a fat sweaty bloke in your face for over two hours.
This film technically comes across as almost amateur the picture wobbles and moves about most of the time for no real needed effect the grain is very harsh the extreme wide angle lenses cause a lot of distortion. This film needed tighter editing and a much reduced running time. The stories not that interesting to the point of being boring. When you think about the same time Fritz Lang was making Spione with much imagination and flare where's this looks like the director's been given the toy box with no follow through talent.
Moonlight Serenade (2009)
Disappointing.
Looks like the whole thing was filmed on a mobile phone with its skewed images making most scenes look like they're filmed in a broom cupboard.
The budget does look very low the acting is 50/50 as is the songs.
The whole thing has not a Saturday night feel more a Tuesday afternoon dullness.
The Rocket Post (2004)
My Post.
Great setting beautifully scenery.
Corny characters
Story not very engaging
Overlong.
The main problem which makes the film unconvincing is how the german scientist gains such great devotion from the islanders and even the girl when hes such a long faced bore.
If you need to watch a highland or the islands film Whiskey Galore.... I Know Where I'm Going and The Edge of the World are a better bet.
Rebecca (1940)
Olivier acted of the screen by a good supporting cast
Massively overlong production. Olivier and Fontaine give understudy performances they just haven't got enough screen presence between them to hold the interest of the viewer there must of been two performers with some chemistry who could of done a better job. In fact you'd never really know this was a Hitchcock directing job it could of been handled by any number of competent directors from the era. If you really want to like it you'll get something out of it otherwise wind forward an hour 25 it takes that long for a story to kick in
The Sand Pebbles (1966)
McQueen does a Flynn.
Umm if Steve is the only one who knows how to steam the ship whys he let loose on all the daft heroics.
Midnight Cowboy (1969)
Worth 50p in a charity shop.
Lots of clever editing and imaginary direction here. Very little story in fact after we meet Dustin for the second time nothing much happens. Loads of 60s 70s films were turned out with there subject matter purely decided contary to what was and could be shown on TV thus loads of sex violence and weird stuff. Trust me even with the touching relationship between the two friends you'll be praying for the damn thing to finish.
Star Wars (1977)
Ultimately Disapointing.
I enjoyed the first half of this film the incredible opening with the giant space ship chasing the princess then one by one we are introduced to the characters the inventivness is wonderful from the hooded baddies to the robotic machines with there personalities Theres plenty of back story hinted at here in this imaginary universe with lots of mythology etc which would of been more interesting to explore. So for me the interest was lost after the princess gets rescued and Alec Guinness dies from then it's just becomes a shoot em up movie with the end ripped of from the dam busters.
De battre mon coeur s'est arrêté (2005)
Carousel Film Making.
Theres very little story progression here the lead starts as a looser and ends the same. It's so tiresome this sort of film where the same scenes are filmed over and over in rotation till the film ends basically it's the set up with his mates then it's the father scenario then it's the piano lessons then hes got a woman then back to his mates and so on acting out the same basic scenes and theres no imaginative ending. The high light for me was the piano teacher. I'd say watch the first 15 and the last 10mins you wont miss much.
Cinema Komunisto (2010)
What a lot of Balkans.
Disappointed to many scratchy clips of war films that all look like Where Eagles Dare, didn't Yugoslavia produce anything artistic and sensitive if so you'd have no idear watching this. The best parts were about the loyal projectionist obviously he with the most talent.
My Childhood (1972)
Very Poor.
Bad acting bad editing just a home movie really. Its ment to be set in 1945 but the haircuts and clothes look 1970s the budget obviously couldn't afford period transport so the street scenes look empty and bare. It's all long faced woe is me reminiscanceing. Its dull and as it's all been done much better before in documentary form pointless.
