[This story contains some mild spoilers for Heretic.]
The heavens have smiled on Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ Heretic.
Critics and audiences are of the belief that their fourth outing as writer-directors is their finest work yet, and it’s been a long time coming considering the Iowa natives’ thought-provoking religious horror movie was conceived before they broke out as the co-writers and originators of A Quiet Place (2018). The film is largely a three-hander between two Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East), and a potential convert named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Upon entering the Englishman’s home in order to peddle the wares of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the two missionaries soon realize they’ve been ensnared in a terrifying game of wits that is meant to test and contradict their faith.

The A24 horror film Heretic, which is coming our way from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, has received a wide theatrical release as of today. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film, giving it a 7/10 review you can read at This Link (or you can watch the video version embedded above), and now we want to know: what do you think about Heretic?
Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – stars in Heretic, which has the following synopsis: Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse.
Grant has previously said that he finds villain roles to be “more fun” to play, so it should be very interesting to watch him take on a...

Plot: Two Mormons (Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher) on a mission knock on the wrong door and find themselves fighting for their lives, faith, and sanity.
Review: Heretic is the latest horror flick from A24, and like many of their genre efforts, it’s a provocative one. Questions of theology and faith are always timely, and much of this diabolical and impressively harsh horror film deals with whether or not – in the face of great conflict – you can maintain your faith or be swayed by both the desire to save your own life and the evidence you’re being presented with.
In this, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) are young Mormons fulfilling their duties as missionaries by essentially going door-to-door to try to convert people to their faith. Neither is a particular stickler for Mormon theology, with the movie opening with them discussing pornography and condoms,...

Update: Warner Bros. has delayed the release of Companion by three weeks, pushing it back to January 31, 2025, the date they had previously reserved for Mickey 17. That film has now moved to April.
The original article follows:
The sci-fi thriller Companion is coming our way from writer/director Drew Hancock and the team behind the 2022 horror hit Barbarian, but even though over a year has passed since the project assembled its cast and went into production, we still know very little about it. It has managed to stay shrouded in secrecy all this time. Which is a good thing, since it won’t be reaching theatres (including IMAX screens) until January… but now, the shroud is starting to be lifted, starting with the release of a teaser trailer. You can watch it in the embed above. The release date gives Companion a one week head-start on Blumhouse Productions and director...

The genre of horror films has been around for a very long time. Despite shocking and frightening audiences, this genre is very popular, and some filmmakers have made a living by creating horror films, especially after Alfred Hitchcock took the genre to new heights.
Wes Craven, John Carpenter, and George Romero are regarded as classics, but there are also a number of up-and-coming filmmakers who want to make a career in the genre.
One of them is Drew Hancock, whose upcoming sci-fi horror Companion is set to be released early next year, although we’ve just received news that the movie is being pushed back, although not by much.
As Bloody Disgusting reports, Companion has been pushed back from its initial January 10 release date, but it is still going to air in the same month, so everyone who’s expecting to see this movie won’t have to wait much...

October ended up being a bit of a bust relative to very high expectations, so far as the overall box office was concerned. "Joker: Folie a Deux" bombed in spectacular fashion, starting things off on a low note. "Venom: The Last Dance" certainly didn't bomb, but it also didn't make nearly as much as the first two entries in that trilogy did either. Once again, though, horror was here to save the day as "Terrifier 3" shocked the industry with a killer overperformance, while "Smile 2" cemented Paramount's budding new franchise. So, can a villain turn by Hugh Grant help keep the horror strong in November as A24's "Heretic" hits theaters?
"Heretic" is currently eyeing a debut between $9 and $16 million when it arrives next weekend, per Box Office Theory. Its only directed competition is Lionsgate's "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." Safe to say, these two films are...

Horror enthusiasts have something to look forward to as Kate Siegel (Hush) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) will be starring together in the upcoming zombie film Epilogue, which will be produced by one of the kings of horror, Mike Flanagan. Below, we shared all there is to know about this movie so far.
Described as an action-horror flick, Epilogue will be directed by Michael Fimognari. Fimognari is known for directing episodes of the Netflix horror series The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher. He will be helming this movie from a script co-written by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.
The story takes place a year after the zombie apocalypse is believed to have ended, and follows a desperate couple searching for a cure for their infected daughter. Although Siegel and Dastmalchian's roles in the film haven't been revealed, our guess is that they'll play the couple.

Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

About a year and half ago, it was announced that The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman will be producing a remake of the 1956 horror film The Mole People (watch it Here) for Universal Pictures… and while we wait for further updates on that project, Deadline has revealed that there’s a different “mole people” project coming our way from Rob Savage, the director of the Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and the screen life horror films Host and Dashcam. This one is called Molepeople and has Anthony Ramos (Twisters) and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) attached to star in it.
Described as telling the story of one man’s nightmarish descent into the abandoned tunnels beneath the streets of New York City, where a twisted society lurks, Molepeople brings to mind not only The Mole People but also the 1984 film C.H.U.D., which involved people living in the tunnels beneath NYC, and the 1972 film Death Line (a.

The director of Host and Stephen King’s The Boogeyman, Rob Savage is next directing a horror movie titled Molepeople, which seems to be inspired by the 1956 classic The Mole People.
Deadline reports that Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom) will star in Rob Savage’s Molepeople, which is set in New York City.
The film is being pitched as “one man’s nightmarish descent into the abandoned tunnels beneath the streets of New York City, where a twisted society lurks.”
Nathan Elston (Succession) wrote the screenplay, with Raphael Margules and J.D Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures (Woman of the Hour) producing alongside Rough House Pictures (Halloween).
Embankment’s Hugo Grumbar said, “Molepeople fuels a modern audience with shocks and thrills, captivating, heightened feelings of fear. Rob’s direction is stylish; BoulderLight’s understanding of modern audiences is unmatched – and together the filmmakers are best in class.

From the writers of A Quiet Place comes a fun thriller about two missionaries trapped by Hugh Grant. Here’s our Heretic review.
Going into Heretic, I was worried. The word of mouth for the film was good, but I also knew nothing about it apart from the basic premise from the trailer. Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo behind the idea for A Quiet Place, Heretic could either end up being a cult classic or something of a letdown.
Heretic is definitely the former.
The setup sees two missionaries, Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), who are going door to door in the pouring rain, offering people more information on God and their church. When they reach Mr Reed’s (Hugh Grant) door, they’re happy to accept his invitation to step inside after he assures them that his wife is also home and baking a pie.

Darren Aronofsky and Mark Heyman have worked together several times over the years. Heyman was Aronofsky’s assistant when he made The Fountain, then he was the co-producer on The Wrestler, a writer on Black Swan, and an executive producer on Mother! So now that Heyman is set to make his feature directorial debut with the horror film Pendulum, it’s good to see that Aronofsky is there to back him up, producing the film through his company Protozoa. A press release sent out today has also revealed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt of The Dark Knight Rises and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has signed on to star in the film, which is set to start filming in New Mexico next March.
Pendulum will tell the following story: Young couple Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to star in Pendulum, a new feature produced by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and directed by Mark Heyman (Black Swan).
The film will start principal photography in March 2025 in New Mexico. Black Bear is repping international rights on the film and will introduce the project to buyers at the American Film Market next week. UTA Independent Film Group, CAA Media Finance, and WME Independent hold domestic rights.
Described as a “terrifying new genre film,” the film follows the young couple Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail on a journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event. Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife but becomes distrustful of the retreat’s enigmatic leader even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if the group’s unconventional spiritual practices offer genuine...

Certain names are synonymous with horror. Hollywood has titans of terror from John Carpenter to Wes Craven, but there is only one “King of Horror,” Stephen King.
The man has a once-in-a-generation level of talent that he has been using to terrorize society since his first short story, “I Was a Teenage Grave Robber.” Since then, his writing catalog has grown quite a bit.
By a bit, I mean Stephen King has written around sixty-five novels and has eighty-five movie credits to his name. At some point, you must ask yourself, what’s going on in Stephen King’s head? The ultra-prolific Ryan Murphy has nothing on this legend.
(Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, CBS, 20th Century Studios, Warner Bros./Screenshots)
Whether it’s Richard Bachman, John Swithen, or Beryl Evans, whatever name King publishes under, his stories continue to set the bar for horror. And it’s just not...

Filming is now underway on writer/director Ted Evans’ debut thriller Retreat, the world’s first deaf thriller starring an all-deaf principal cast, Variety reports today.
The film stars Anne Zander, James Boyle, and Sophie Stone, with Ace Mahbaz and Anna Seymore rounding out the cast.
Retreat is set “in an isolated deaf community, where cracks begin to appear in Matt’s (Boyle) seemingly idyllic world when the arrival of enigmatic outsider Eva (Zander) forces him to question the realities of his identity. Is Matt prepared to discover what lies beneath the surface of his supposedly utopian community and the costs demanded to maintain it?”
XYZ Films will be introducing the film to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
“XYZ is beyond thrilled to be working with Ted Evans on his debut feature,” Todd Brown, head of international acquisitions at XYZ, told Variety. “We immediately fell in love with...

The true crime genre often walks a tightrope, trying to balance respect for victims with the inherent luridness of the subject matter. People Magazine Investigates generally manages to avoid the more exploitative pitfalls, and this episode, focusing on the abduction of a nine-year-old girl from her home in Homosassa, Florida, sounds like particularly grim territory. Rachel McAdams played Christine Palmer in director Scott Derrickson’s contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the 2016 film Doctor Strange – but there was a time when we were told that Christine would not be appearing the follow-up, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She did end up in that movie, though, and by working on that film, McAdams had the chance to work with director Sam Raimi. Now Deadline reports that Raimi and McAdams are aiming to re-team on the 20th Century Studios horror thriller Send Help, which Raimi will be producing and directing. McAdams is currently in talks to star in the film, but Deadline cautions that these negotiations are in early stages, and nothing is definite at this point.
Back in 2007, it was rumored that Sam Raimi would be producing a fantasy film with a screenplay written by Freddy vs. Jason and Friday the 13th 2009 writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for an intriguing new sci-fi horror love story(?) titled Companion, which stars Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Sophie Thatcher as a not-so happy couple.
The teaser cleverly puts us at ease with the usual romcom set-up, even noting that the movie comes from the studio that brought us The Notebook. We then see a chef preparing a meal for Quaid and Thatcher's characters, who initially seem to be enjoying each other's company.
Things quickly take a dark turn when it's revealed that Thatcher is handcuffed to her chair, and we're then told that "the unhinged creators of Barbarian" were also involved with bringing the film to the screen.
From here, we get some glimpses of sinister goings-on involving the leads (it definitely looks like they're doing their best to kill each other for some reason), but it's still not clear exactly what's happening.

Starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Hatcher, Companion is a wild-looking thriller from the producers behind Barbarian. Here’s a trailer:
In the middle of last year, it was revealed that the producers behind Barbarian – one of 2022’s wildest horror flicks – would be bringing us Companion. At the time, it was dubbed as a sci-fi thriller and it may well indeed be exactly that… although given the strange nature of the trailer, we aren’t sure exactly what it is.
Of course, that’s absolutely fine with us. The feeling of not knowing what a film will be is always far more intriguing than the alternative, and the collection of strange but captivating imagery that the trailer showcases has us wondering where this thriller will take us.
What we do know is this: Companion is a self-contained story written and directed by Drew Hancock in his feature directorial debut. The producers...

Sophie Thatcher is a certified scream queen.
The “Yellowjackets” breakout star has gone on to appear in “The Boogeyman,” act opposite Hugh Grant in A24’s buzzy “Heretic,” and now lead elusive horror-thriller “Companion” alongside Jack Quaid.
“Companion” only has a mysterious faux ad for its tagline, reading, “Hey you. Tired of swiping? Sick of getting ghosted? Are you feeling like a part of you is missing? FindYourCompanion.com is guaranteed to find you a Companion who’s made for you.”
Audiences can also text (978) 878-5683 to find their Companions — and yes, that is a real phone number with data rates applying.
The teaser trailer does show Thatcher seemingly being stalked, chased, and perhaps even murdered, before then getting her hand lit on fire from love interest for Quaid’s character. Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend also star.

A middling adaptation of the 1975 novel proves to be a lacklustre non-event even for hardcore genre fans
The inevitability of even more Stephen King adaptations, in the wake of It’s record-breaking success back in 2017, has rarely felt associated with all that much necessity. There have been about 13 on the big and small screens in the years since, mostly a mix of sub-par second-go reworks of classics and an unnecessary stream of little-known short stories, with only the odd bright spot in-between.
