Young and carefree, Kate, Anton, and Keith party, photograph, paint, sing, and play their way through the clubs and lofts of Alphabet City.
The party ends in 1984 when Anton and Keith contract a mysterious illness known as the “gay cancer.” We gain an intimate glimpse into their creative and emotional lives as the three lose their youth and innocence.

This is a lyrical poetic paen to those times some of us were lucky enough to have lived through. The sexual revolution and its sexual freedom in effect then for the newly liberated homosexual community, also opened the way for Kate to express herself. And it opened a door for transexuals, women and the whole diversity of humanity to assert itself today.

Zaytoun, directed by Eran Riklis, is a conceptually interesting film. Bringing to mind ‘buddy movie’ plotting the story focuses on an Israeli fighter pilot and a Palestinian boy who form a bond whilst on the run together across Lebanon.
I was lucky enough to speak to Eran Riklis at the London Film Festival and he was both candid and highly interesting to speak to. Read on to find out what he had to say about making the film for a wide audience, casting Stephen Dorff and shooting digitally.
There’s a balance in the film between entertainment and politics. And possibly more serious subjects that you might usually expect in ‘entertainment’ films.
I think that’s at the core of my filmmaking in general. I really think that once you’ve decided that you want to tackle these kind of issues – especially in the Middle East – because there’s many...

The French Sales Agent with the coolest name on the Croisette might not have anything playing in the different sections but they got a good chunk of items I easily see playing at Locarno, Tiff and Venice. At the top of their charts, I'm actually keen on seeing the tale of the first vibrator with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Hysteria is labeled as in production. From Israel we have Eran Riklis' next in Playoff also on our radar. Here's the Elle Driver slate for 2011: Bunker by Andres Baiz - Production Hysteria by Tanya Wexler - Production Hut In The Woods by Hans Weingartner - Post-Production Love The Boat by Pascale Pouzadoux - Completed My Sweet Orange Tree (Meu PÉ De Laranja Lima) by Marcos Bernstein - Production New Kids Turbo by Flip Van Den Kuil - Completed Omar Killed Me by Roschdy Zem - Completed Painless by Juan Carlos Medina...

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films) Follow up to the hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo finds Lisabeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) joining forces once again as Blomkvist is about to break a story on Sweden’s sex trade, which leads unexpectedly to a dark secret from Elizabeth’s past. Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
The Killer Inside Me (IFC Films) Michael Winterbottom’s adaptation of Jim Thompson’s classic, and notorious, novel about the psychotic mind of a small town sheriff (Casey Affleck,...

For the past decade, the film festival circuit has been kind to Israeli film and although they're still churning out quality films, this year certainly feels like an off one. Barely or not at all visible in Berlin, Cannes and Venice, the end of the calender year might change the picture. Last week, the Locarno film festival wrapped up with another award for veteran Israeli helmer Eran Riklis (see picture above). The helmer's The Mission of the Human Resources Manager won the Prix du Public - the same award he won six years ago for The Syrian Bride. It's rumored next stop is Tiff - that will be confirmed in tomorrow's final announcement. Another Israeli entry (see pic below) that is being mentioned for Tiff, is Avi Nesher's latest hit Once I Was. Nesher has been invited to participate in this year's Toronto Film Festival's Talent Lab, mentoring young...
