Comedian Jim Carrey was chosen to play Ebenezer Scrooge in Disney’s 2009 version of A Christmas Carol. But before that, the actor starred in the film I Love You Philip Morris, which caused a bit of concern for the studio.

Carrey once collaborated with Star Wars alum Ewan McGregor for the film I Love You Phillip Morris. The 2009 comedy picture saw Carrey playing a cop that decides to reveal his true sexuality after an accident. McGregor portrayed his love interest in the film, and wasn’t shy about the movie ultimately being a gay feature.
“I’m very keen that it’s a gay movie,” McGregor once said according to NBC Dfw. “There was quite a lot of talk at Sundance [in 2009] that ‘Well, it’s not a gay movie.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

The second season of original series “Almost Paradise” is set to premiere on Freevee on July 21. When hypertension forces DEA agent Alex Walker (played by Christian Kane) into early retirement, he moves to the Philippines in hopes of a quieter life. But unfortunately for him, he can’t avoid danger. Soon, the local police ask him to help solve a series of serious crimes.
Watch the “Almost Paradise” Season 2 trailer:
Also coming to Amazon’s free streaming service in July is the incredibly meta action series “Ze Network.” In the show, David Hasselhoff plays himself as he takes a gig at an English-language theater in Germany — and we all know that Germans love David Hasselhoff. "Rabbit Hole," the upcoming Paramount+ series starring Kiefer Sutherland, is an ode to spy thrillers throughout the decades. Taking inspiration from the espionage movies of the '70s as well as the counterterrorism television shows of the turn of the new millennium, "Rabbit Hole" plays out like a greatest hits of the spy genre according to early reviews. In an exclusive interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, showrunners John Requa and Glenn Ficarra explain that their influences travel further than just spy stories, ranging from "Breaking Bad" to the 1997 David Fincher film "The Game."
"Rabbit Hole" will inevitably receive comparisons to "24," and not just because of the presence of Sutherland. The show follows a twisty path as mysteries unfold and a simple procedural turns into something more complicated, although this time Sutherland switches his allegiances from the feds to the more lucrative and even more morally dubious world of corporate espionage.

This week, anyone invested in the entertainment industry should be following recent developments surrounding a major Hollywood actor whose three decades of success might be coming to an end.
That actor, of course, is… Jim Carrey.
As Will Smith’s slap continues to reverberate across popular culture, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” has made its way to theaters, with Carrey’s return as the gonzo mustache-twirling villain Dr. Robotnik quite possibly serving as his swan song. In an Access Hollywood interview promoting the release, Carrey said he was “fairly serious” about retirement, chalking up the decision to his “quiet life” as a painter. That would be a loss to many filmmakers whose work could benefit from his involvement, and raises questions about why he hasn’t been associated with the kind of opportunities that might keep him engaged — i.e., work from young directors and original ideas.

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson are romancing riverboat adventurers in a ride-turned-film that quickly becomes bland
The Jungle Cruise theme-park ride is a riverboat trip that Disneyland visitors have been queuing up for since the 1950s: an old-timey craft travelling down an artificial jungle river, with a jolly captain pointing out animatronic animals lurching out of the artificial undergrowth. Now it’s been adapted into a blandly inoffensive piece of generic entertainment: screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (who once gave us Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris) have mashed up The African Queen with Raiders of the Lost Ark, and with what I admit is a surreal splash of Aguirre, Wrath of God.
It’s lively enough for the first 20 minutes. The year is 1916, and Emily Blunt plays Lily Houghton, a haughty yet idealistic British scientist, much patronised by the male establishment in London. She imperiously hires...

The show hails from writers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, who will also direct and executive produce. Sutherland will executive produce in addition to starring, with Charlie Gogolak and Entertainment 360’s Suzan Bymel also executive producing. Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...

Ewan McGregor scored his first Emmy nomination in 2017 for his performance in FX’s limited series “Fargo,” and now he’s returning to the television awards season with Netflix’s upcoming “Halston.” Executive produced by Ryan Murphy, “Halston” stars McGregor as the beloved fashion designer. As part of the actor’s cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, the publication reports that “McGregor was concerned that taking on a gay icon like Halston might result in a backlash.” McGregor has played gay characters throughout his career (see “I Love You Phillip Morris” for starters), but there’s a more heightened awareness these days about straight actors tackling queer roles.
“I hear the discussion and I respect both sides of it, I really do,” McGregor told THR. “I haven’t walked in Billy Porter’s shoes. I don’t know what it’s like to lose out on parts when you might...

I did a double take when I saw the headline myself. Despite only launching a week ago, a not inconsiderable number of titles will be leaving HBO Max at the end of June. Logically, distribution contracts that were already running out weren’t going to stop running out just because Warner launched their new service, so you best get on these quick.
Here’s the list of all the movies leaving HBO Max on June 30th:
The Abyss
Akeelah and the Bee
American Wedding
An Ideal Husband
Arthur
Asylum
The Beverly Hillbillies
The Big Green
Blindspotting
Bye Bye, Love
Empire of the Sun
Glengarry Glen Ross
Grandma’s Boy
Great Expectations
A Handful of Dust
Head Full of Honey
Heaven & Earth
Hellboy
The Hoax
I Love You Phillip Morris
Indignation

In addition to producing a Texas Chain Saw Massacre reboot and directing an upcoming White House horror film, filmmaker Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe and 2013's Evil Dead) is preparing to direct a new zombie movie.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Alvarez is set to direct the "zombie pandemic thriller" 16 States for Lionsgate, who acquired the hot new spec script penned by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, the writers behind Bad Santa, Focus, and I Love You Phillip Morris (based on the book by Steve McVicker).
According to THR, 16 States focuses on "a pandemic, this time with zombies, with a story of a mother trying to reach her family at the center of it. The project has been described as having shades of the Will Smith zombie movie I Am Legend" (based on the novel of the same name by Richard Matheson).

Samuel L. Jackson is coming on board an untitled action movie, portraying a hitman coming out of retirement.
The project is a return to familiar turf for Jackson, who played the title character in “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” and memorably portrayed gangster Jules Winnfield in “Pulp Fiction,” receiving a best supporting actor nomination for the role.
Endeavor Content will represent the sale of worldwide rights at the European Film Market in Berlin.
The project is written by Matthew Stone and directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. Jackson’s character has retired from being the trusted hitman for a mob boss. But when his nephew makes a stupid mistake, the hitman is told by his old boss that he must either help the kid recover the lost money, or kill him — which leads to him forcing the nephew to clean up his mess while pontificating on some of life’s lessons.

Canadian comedian Jim Carrey has compiled a wildly varied filmography during a career that has spanned nearly four decades, from mid-1980s comedies like Once Bitten and Peggy Sue Got Married to his breakout role as pet detective Ace Ventura in a pair of mid-1990s comedies to more dramatic parts in mid-2000s films like The Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
He’s played comic book characters Edward “The Riddler” Nygma, Stanley “The Mask” Ipkiss, and Sal “Colonel Stars & Stripes” Bertolinni, and animated characters Ebenezer Scrooge and Horton the Elephant. Carrey has also played real-life personalities twice, portraying performance artist Andy Kaufman in 1999’s Man on the Moon, for which he won his second Golden Globe Award, and con artist Steven Jay Russell in 2009’s I Love You Phillip Morris, for which he did not, and now he appears to be in talks to take...

Producers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra have generally kept a wide berth between their kid-friendly projects and their more adult material. The best parts of “Smallfoot” see them finding a middle ground, espousing plot points and messaging that you don’t usually find in family fare.
Lurking within this animated tale of yetis and humans are such forward-thinking notions as, “Question everything, including religion,” “Governments use public safety as an excuse for misleading the populace when they really just want to control people,” and “Tribalism benefits people in power more than the communities they claim to want to protect.”
Heady stuff for a mainstream cartoon, but unfortunately “Smallfoot” can’t bear the weight of its big ideas, saddled as it is with fairly mediocre animation, mostly forgettable songs and a resolutely by-the-numbers screenplay by director Karey Kirkpatrick (“Over the Hedge”) and Clare Sera, adapting Sergio Pablos’ book “Yeti Tracks.”

Jim Carrey’s career has zigged and zagged in a number of directions over the years, but he’s never taken a role as strange as the one he tackles in “The Bad Batch.” The actor surfaces early in Ana Lily Amirpour’s dystopian Western, almost unrecognizable beneath a scruffy beard, and never speaks a single word. While he only appears in a handful of scenes, The Hermit is one of a few memorably outlandish characters in Amirpour’s dark vision, a silent, nomadic figure who roams the desert with a shopping cart and winds up rescuing the film’s amputee heroine (Suki Waterhouse) after she escapes a gang of cannibals.
This cool and risky performance is a world away from the hyperbolic delivery of Ace Ventura, and suggests the physicality of slapstick comedy folded into a post-apocalyptic milieu. But so far, Carrey hasn’t said a word about it.

For anyone who really wanted a movie about John McAfee, the anti-virus software mogul who basically went balls to the wall crazy in Belize, I have some very good news. Someone's going to make a movie about it. The movie will be about the time Wired magazine writer Joshua Davis went to visit McAfee and McAfee was just all sorts of crazy, holed up in a compound with teenage girls in bikinis and bath salts. Lots of bath salts. And not for taking baths.
The movie is to star Johnny Depp as John McAfee, which sounds like a good fit. Most of my favorite Depp roles are him on drugs, most famously as Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. It will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who wrote Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris, and it will be written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski,...

February is the home of Valentine’s Day, which makes it the unofficial month of both love and misery. It doesn’t seem like Hulu’s new content offerings for February were specifically selected with those things in mind, but we can still view them through those lenses. That way, it might help you decide what to watch when you’re suffering from one of those feelings next month.
On February 14, Love Day itself, Hulu will adding the second-half of The Mindy Project season five, with the complete series of Golden Girls coming the day before. Both of those things are pretty love-related, as are February 1’s Shakespeare In Love, February 3’s I Love You Phillip Morris, and even February 11’s Kampai! For The Love Of Sake (we assume). Then there are the less-obvious love-related picks, like the premiere of NBC’s Taken series (he loves ...

For those with ears to hear, 2003’s “Bad Santa” was a wicked little Christmas carol. From idiosyncratic filmmaker Terry Zwigoff (“Ghost World”) and writing team Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“I Love You Phillip Morris”), the Billy Bob Thornton heist comedy ignored the usual Ebenezer Scrooge-style stations of the cross to lesson-laden redemption and that journey’s attendant heartwarmth. Its profane insults and defiant refusal of cheer were a cold, astringent slap. And while hardly inventing irreverence for the holiday, the film showed up to win as though no one told it that hating Christmas wasn’t actually a competitive sport.

The supernatural crime thriller Cold Moon tells the story of Nathan Redfield (Josh Stewart), an arrogant man of great wealth who has either lost his mind or is being tormented by terrible forces beyond even the most paranoid of imaginings. In a sleepy Southern town, the Larkins have suffered a terrible tragedy, but the family is now about to face an even more grievous trial. As traffic lights blink an eerie warning, a ghostly apparition prowls the streets, and corpses erupt from the graves of the local cemetery in an implacable march of terror. And beneath the murky surface of the river, a shifting, vaguely human shape slowly takes form,...

Salem, Oregon served as the arena for an unusual war fought between 2009 and the early 2010s: a battle for ice-cream-truck supremacy. David Wolman and Julian Smith chronicled the stranger-than-fiction skirmish in an Epic Magazine article written last year, which later inspired an episode of Radiolab. New Line has now picked up the film rights to “The Cold War,” which chronicles the years-long skirmish between rivals Dennis Roeper and Efrain Escobar.

Tina Fey and Martin Freeman star in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, that's finally made it to cinemas. It's been worth the wait...
If you're wondering whether or not Whiskey Tango Foxtrot marks something of a departure for Tina Fey, the answer is yes and no. It's based on a true story and mostly takes place in an active war zone, but it's also very funny and Fey's role as journalist Kim Baker seems tailor-made for her. Happily, the end result is her best big screen leading role to date.
Fey's long-time writing partner Robert Carlock provides the script, based on Baker's memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days In Afghanistan And Pakistan, whose New York Times review observed that the author presented herself “as a Tina Fey character.” Unsurprisingly, the transition from page to screen has been very smooth since Paramount optioned the book, even with various artistic...

Paramount has released a new red-band trailer for Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, the new Tina Fey comedy that sees Fey playing a journalist who heads to Afghanistan in order to shake up her life and get out of her New York City routine. When she lands, she meets and bonds with Margot Robbie's character, while Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton pop up in smaller roles. It comes from the directors of Crazy Stupid Love, who also made I Love You Phillip Morris and Focus; if it holds true to the pattern of the directors' previous films, this should be enjoyable in the moment but not make much of an impact otherwise.
The reason this is red-band is because a few F-bombs are dropped, and those aren't the only bombs that go off in this trailer. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot hits theaters on March 4th.

Time to check in to see which movies we all can check back in with or catch up with now that they've hit the home market. The big title, Oscar wise is Steven Spielberg's 10th Best Picture nominee as a director, the cold war drama Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance both doing fine work as a lawyer and the spy he must bargain with for a prisoner of war trade. Only one of Spielberg's directorial efforts has ever won Best Picture (Schindler's List, 1993) but which is your favorite? I'd rank them like so...
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Schindler's List (1993) Jaws (1975) E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) Lincoln (2012) The Color Purple (1985) Bridge of Spies (2015) Saving Private Ryan (1998) Munich (2005) War Horse (2011)

Before 50 Shades of Grey was made fashionable by mainstream auds, Secretary was a sizzler cubicle space title that made Steven Shainberg a sought after indie helmer. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Rupture will be his comeback of sorts, as he hasn’t lensed a film in almost a decade. To be fair, he did produced some projects, including Our Brand is Crisis for his docu-filmmaker wife Rachel Boynton, but his highly imaginative Fur was completely maimed during its theatrical run. Producer Andrew Lazar who broke out with 1996′s Bound (worthy pair in his filmography include Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and the underrated 2009 comedy, I Love You Phillip Morris) and recently broke the bank with American Sniper is producing the project along with Christina Weiss Lurie (frequent Sundance accepted docu-producer), Ambi’s Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi (The Humbling, James Franco’s currently being filmed In Dubious Battle...

Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves have both dipped their toes into the indie world throughout their careers, but it's been quite awhile since they were involved with a project that has as much advance buzz as "The Bad Batch" does. The Annapurna Pictures and Vice project is acclaimed filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour's follow up to "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" and is described as a dystopian love story set in Texas. According to Deadline, while Diego Luna and Suki Waterhouse ("Insurgent") are on board as the film's leads, Carrey is set to play The Hermit, Reeves will portray The Dream and Jason Momoa will bring someone called Miami Man to life. Extrapolate from those character names what you can. Production on the project will begin next month in Texas with Annapurna taking bids for global rights at the Cannes Film Festival. And, yes, that sort of timeline...

Early in the new film Focus, a veteran con man played by Will Smith teaches his fledgling grifter protégé (Margot Robbie) the tools of the trade: misdirection, deception, subliminal suggestion. They’re a few of the tools applied in Focus by cinematographer Xavier Grobet as well, who is tasked with not only making the New York, New Orleans and Buenos Aires locations sleek and alluring but also with pushing audiences alternately toward and away from the plot’s various double-crosses. Focus marks the second collaboration between Grobet and I Love You Phillip Morris directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. The Mexican cinematographer […]...

There is no trace of the old Will Smith charm in this glossily mediocre con caper that is almost entirely free of anything or anyone to care about
What on earth happened to Will Smith? He could until recently trade on a certain amount of charm: I have a soft spot for his sentimental drama The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) and he did a good job in the almost impossible role of Muhammad Ali for Michael Mann in 2001. But Smith is just insufferable in this fantastically boring caper about high-class con-trick artists: supercilious and smug, gliding through a glossily mediocre film on cruise control. It is written and directed by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (who made Crazy, Stupid, Love and I Love You Phillip Morris), but without the flair or fun of those pictures. Smith is super-cool con artist Nicky, and Margot Robbie is Jess, the hot would-be grifter that...
