2013′s Escape Plan was, despite the hype behind the double header of the appearance of Stallone and Schwarzenegger together, something of an underwhelming action flick. Whilst it was a solid movie it didn’t set the world alight and most people, other than genre fans that is, would be hard-pressed to remember the ins-and-outs of the futuristic prison film. But that didn’t stop Stallone from putting together plans for not one but Two sequels, this time teaming with man-mountain and comedy genius Dave Bautista and director Steven C. Miller – who’s no stranger to genre filmmaking, having helmed a trio of Bruce Willis Dtv movies and the Nicolas Cage...

Fans rejoice. Take a deep breath and exhale. The sequel we’ve all been waiting for is only a few months away. I know you know we’re talking Escape Plan 2: Hades. Sylvester Stallone returns for the sequel, which finds his character Ray Breslin breaking In to a prison rather than breaking Out. Sly will be joined by franchise newcomer Dave Bautista. Bautista’s muscles fill in for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who will not be returning.

In all seriousness, the reason I like movies like this is because it doesn’t pretend to be anything its not. Either you like these silly action movies or you don’t. While I don’t necessarily always feel like watching something like this, occasionally it’s great. Like any junk food it must be consumed in moderation.

It’s always exciting when there’s a new feature film being shot in St. Louis! We Are Movie Geeks was recently on the set of The Importance Of Doubting Tom, a romantic comedy set in the world of dart throwing where the “competitions play out echoing and mirroring the games that lovers play”. It’s loosely based on the classic Oscar Wilde play, The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Importance Of Doubting Tom is written and directed by Vanessa Roman, who has been actively working in the local theater and film industry for 15 years. Her first film, Play Dead, won Best Horror Short and Best Juvenile Actress at The St. Louis Filmmaker’s Showcase and her second, The Inheritance won Best Experimental film at the Toronto Female Eye Film Festival.

British actress Elizabeth Shepherd is best known for her dual performance as the strong-willed Lady Rowena and the ghostly Lady Ligeia opposite Vincent Price in director Roger Corman’s The Tomb Of Ligeia in 1965. Ms Shepherd has enjoyed a long career in movies and in British television since 1959 and her most recent big screen role was as Hillary Swank’s mother-in-law in the 2008 Amelia Earhart biography Amelia. However, it’s the stage is where she most loves to perform and that’s where we caught up with her for this interview as she was preparing for her role in an upcoming production of the play Pygmalion in Houston. We had invited Ms Shepherd to be a guest of honor at Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration in May of 2011 here in Price’s hometown of St. Louis, but she had committed to the play and was unable to accept our invitation.

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The phrase “camp as Christmas” seems the only appropriate way to describe this month’s festive special as we take a look at the Blu-ray release of six Edgar Allan Poe adaptations combining the formidable talents of the great Vincent Price and the glorious “King of B-Movies”, Roger Corman.

Filmed relatively early in Corman’s incredibly prolific sixty-year career (over 400 movies produced, more than fifty films directed and he’s even starred in thirty-odd to boot!), this month’s Six Gothic Tales boxset covers all but one of his and Price’s early 60s Poe-themed Aip productions, from the morose The Fall Of The House Of Usher right through to 1964’s UK-based The Tomb Of Ligeia.

He was 75 years old and boasted an acting career that lasted from 1960 to only months before he died, with well over a hundred credits (often lead roles) to his name, yet Naschy still had so much to give. Despite suffering long-term depression and undergoing major heart surgery, his spirit, enthusiasm and unpretentious adoration of genre cinema made him feel irrepressible. For the third week of October, genre fans have several new and classic titles coming out this week on DVD and Blu-ray to look forward to, including The Vincent Price Collection II, Snowpiercer, Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort, See No Evil 2 and the badass follow-up to last year’s box office home invasion hit, The Purge: Anarchy.

As the undisputed king of American gothic, Vincent Price holds a unique position regarding his association with British horror. From the mid sixties, nearly all his films were made in the UK, and while not as distinguished as The House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962) and The Raven (1963), they are not without interest. As an actor perfectly suited to English gothic, Price’s output includes two career-defining performances. In a nutshell, he had the best of both worlds.

Masque of the Red Death (1964)

The British phase of his career began with a bang. After directing all of Price’s Poe chillers for American International Pictures, Roger Corman wanted to give the formula a fresh approach by making his next film in England. Aip’s Samuel Z Arkoff and James H Nicholson had already produced several European films, so the next step was to establish a London base with Louis M Heyward in charge.

Far too often we throw around the phrase "horror icon" or "horror legend"; however, there is no disputing the fact that Vincent Price absolutely deserves to be described with both of those handles. And today, to celebrate Scream Factory's launch of The Vincent Price Collection (review), we count down our Top 10 Vincent Price Films.

Well known to mainstream, non-horror fans as the voice in the legendary Michael Jackson song "Thriller," Vincent Price was indeed the face of horror for quite some time. Los Angeles, CA (May 10th, 2013) – Following their successful collaboration on 2 Guns and Lone Survivor, Foresight Unlimited, Envision Entertainment and Emmett/Furla Films are joining forces to produce the surreal thriller Hotel 33, starring Oscar®-winning actor Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas), it was announced today by Foresight CEO Mark Damon and Emmett/Furla’s Randall Emmett.

Foresight Unlimited will handle international sales for Hotel 33, which will be produced by Randall Emmett and George Furla, and executive produced by Envision Entertainment’s Remington Chase, Stepan Martirosyan and Vitaly Grigoriants, and Foresight’s Mark Damon. Malek Akkad is also an executive producer on the film.

Vincent Price Week concludes at Trailers from Hell with "Tomb of Ligeia," which director and Tfh creator Joe Dante calls "an intelligent and satisfying climax to the [Roger] Corman/Poe saga."Roger Corman bids farewell to his Edgar Allan Poe series with a beautifully mounted departure from the heavy stylization of previous entries, played more like a gothic romance. Vincent Price would go on to topline an eccentric collection of further Poe "adaptations", some of them in name only. Elizabeth Shepherd is a strong proto-Jane Austin heroine, and also plays Price's dead wife who haunts him from the grave in the form of a black cat. It's an intelligent and satisfying climax to the Corman/Poe saga.

Edgar Allan Poe. So good you remake them twice. Roger Corman made Edgar Allan Poe movie adaptations way back in the 50s and 60s, with Vincent Price starring in many of them. It’s 2012, going on 2013, and that means it’s time. Time for Corman to go back to Poe, with all-new adaptations of the classic material.

And with Corman, of course, that means not just one, but a bundle. House Of Usher, The Pit And The Pendulum, Premature Burial, Tales Of Terror, The Raven, The Haunted Palace, The Masque Of The Red Death, and The Tom Of Ligeia are all on the remake slate. Here’s what Corman had to say: “Now being able to do them in 3D and with a lot of computer graphics, we can do things we never dreamed of doing before.“

Expect the budgets to be around $2.5-$3 million, or way more than the originals.

I'm always experiencing Déjà vu these days. Like the other day I visited a lovely Cornish pub for a cosy meal with my wife Ally, and yet all of a sudden I had this notable feeling that I'd been there before. No word of warning, and then Bam! Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which took place here in St. Louis last Spring and was covered in depth at We Are Movie Geeks, has been nominated for a Rondo Award for “Best Fan Event”. Now in their tenth year, The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out annually for the year’s best horror-related stuff–movies, magazines,articles, toys, etc. The Rondos are completely fan-based; nominees are selected by horror film fans and focus specifically on the horror genre. The awards are debated at The Classic Horror Film Board and presented at the Wonderfest Hobby Expo in May in Louisville, Ky. They were linked a month ago and now it's confirmed - Arnold Schwarzenegger are starring alongside Sylvester Stallone in the action-thriller "The Tomb" for Emmett-Furla Films and Summit Entertainment.

Miles Chapman and Jason Keller penned the script which follows Ray Breslin (Stallone), the world's foremost authority on prison structural security. His skills are put to the test when he is framed and put in a high-security prison of his own design and must find the person who put him there.

Schwarzenegger plays Church, plays a complex inmate who fights to keep the prisoners from losing their humanity in their darkest hour as they struggle together to stay alive. Mikael Håfström ("1408," "The Rite") is directing.

Mark Canton, Randall Emmet, George Furla, Robbie Brenner and Kevin King-Templeton will all produce. Shooting kicks off in Louisiana this spring.

First reported just a few weeks ago, it has now been confirmed via press release that The Rite and 1408 director Mikael Hafstrom will reunite The Expendables stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger for a new action/thriller titled The Tomb. Stallone will take the part of Ray Breslin, a security expert who needs to escape a prisin he himself created. Schwarzenegger will play an inmate who falls on both the good and bad side.

Due to my distate for Hafstrom’s previous work and these two action stars mostly phoning it in recently, I don’t have much excitement for this project.
