****SPOILERS**** With showgirl Lourie Lee found murdered and a $200,000.00 uncut diamond missing Mike Hammer, Darren McGiven, takes a plane ride to the Brussel's 1958 World's Fair where Lourie and a group of her fellow Broadway showgirls are to be as exhibits, called the Lullaby's of Broadway, there. It doesn't take long for Hammer to track down the contact or fence that Lourie was to meet there Nicolas Maison, Paul Lukather, whom Hammer by threatening to ring his neck gets him to open up about his relations, in fencing stolen jewelry, with Lourie.
Before Hammer can get Maison to give him the lowdown about the diamond he's murdered in broad daylight at one of the fair's exhibit rides. Now with no proof to go on Hammer finds another of the members of the Lullaby's of Broadway exhibits showgirl Peggy Sanford, Betty Utey, taking a powder, not in the powder room, to meet the promoter of the exhibit Rick Morley, Alan Dexer, on the Brussels waterfront in how he's to fence not only the uncut diamond but leave her out to dry as a pasty. That's when the police come in for the pinch for the murder of Lourie that Morley committed back in New York!
****SPOILERS**** Hammer soon sees that he was suckered by another showgirl at the exhibit, whom he developed the hots for, Vergie Darlen,Jean Allison, who together with her boss Rick Morley murdered Lourie who, before being murdered, refused to hand the diamond over to them that she was given for safe keeping! As for poor Peggy she was just a stooge set up by Morley and Virgie to first get the diamond fenced by the now murdered Maison and then be knocked off together with the clueless, in what Morley has planned for her, Vergie who thought that she was a partner in her bosses' Rick Morley murderous scheme!
