If you grew up on such films as "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Nutty Professor," and "Liar Liar," you likely know the name Tom Shadyac. The writer/director made a name for himself with these now beloved family comedies. You might remember his first detour from such fare with the critically-panned but commercially successful "Patch Adams," but chances are you've never heard of his follow-up.

Shadyac's 2002 supernatural thriller "Dragonfly" was every bit as maudlin as "Patch Adams" but it also had the distinction of being a bona fide box office dud, making $52 million on a $60 million budget. Trying something different is often to be commended, but the guy who directed "Ace Ventura" helming a film about a widowed doctor whose dead wife contacts him through patients doesn't seem like the most well-advised career move. Still, if you've got Kevin Costner fronting your bizarre drama, you might be in with a chance of making something half-decent.

Early next year, Universal and Blumhouse will continue their reanimation of the Universal Monsters with the release of director Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man. Dianne Crittenden, the casting director whose impressive résumé included the first Star Wars film, The In-Laws and the Terrence Malick features Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, has died. She was 82.

Crittenden died Wednesday at her home in Pacific Palisades after a battle with several cancers, fellow casting director Ilene Starger told The Hollywood Reporter.

“Dianne was my mentor, we’ve known each other for 44 years,” Starger said. “She was also my dear friend, more like an older sister, really. So generous, kind, brilliant, funny. A people magnet. Her knowledge of and insight into actors was extraordinary.”

A former head of casting at Warner Bros., Crittenden collaborated with Martin Ritt on Murphy’s Romance (1985) and Stanley & Iris (1990); with Roger Donaldson on Thirteen Days (2000) and The World’s Fastest Indian (2005); and with Peter Weir on Witness (1985), The Mosquito Coast (1986) and Green Card (1990).

Crittenden was born in Queens on Aug.

Despite no longer being a part of Yellowstone’s next season, Kevin Costner seems to be busier than ever. First up, he’s got a two-part Western epic called Horizon: An American Saga that’s coming out this summer, and now, Deadline is reporting that the actor’s got another “longtime passion project” ready to roll. While there are no specifics on what it may be, Costner is set to produce and star in the untitled film, with the director of his 2016 thriller Criminal, Ariel Vromen, at the helm.

The Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild has revealed this year’s recipients of its Lifetime Achievement Awards. Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up artist Kevin Haney and Emmy-nominated longtime hair stylist Ora T. Green will be honored February 18 during the Muahs Awards at the Beverly Hilton.

Peter White, known for his role as attorney Lincoln (Linc) Tyler on soap opera “All My Children” and for his role onstage and on screen in “The Boys in the Band,” died of melanoma at his home in Los Angeles on Nov. 1. He was 86.

In “Armageddon,” White played the Secretary of Defense, while he joined the U.S. government again as Secretary of Commerce in “Dave.” With a distinguished look, Whit was particularly in demand for parts as senators, college deans and ambassadors.

The actor, a graduate of Northwestern and the Yale School of Drama, got his first major acting role as an understudy for Robert Redford in the Broadway production of “Barefoot in the Park” along Myrna Loy. That role formally introduced White to the world of Broadway.

Peter White, the actor best known playing Lincoln Tyler on All My Children, has died. He was 86.

His death was confirmed to multiple reports by Kathleen Noone, who played Ellen Dalton on the former ABC sudser from 1978-2011.

White’s cause of death on Nov. 1 was melanoma.

The New York City-born actor joined the action in Pine Valley in 1976 and stayed on the soap on and off through 2005.

A graduate of Northwestern University from the School of Communications, White studied acting at the Yale School of Drama. He kicked off his prolific career on stage and was part of the original 1968 cast of the hit Off-Broadway play, “The Boys in the Band.”

Warner Bros Discovery is restructuring its film division, starting with outgoing MGM heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy replacing Toby Emmerich as head of Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, and with DC and Animation divisions expected to have new leaders reporting directly to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

De Luca and Abdy will not start until they’ve officially exited MGM, which Amazon acquired earlier this year. As for Emmerich, he will start a new production venture that will have a five-year financing and distribution deal with Warner Bros.

John Aylward, the veteran character actor best known for his long stint on the hit medical drama ER, has died at the age of 75.

Aylward’s agent Mitchell Stubbs confirmed Aylward’s death to Deadline; while the cause of death was not revealed, Aylward died Monday in his native Seattle after a period of declining health.

“I was shocked. He was a wonderful actor and a phenomenal human being,” Stubbs told Deadline. “He was a dream client, a friend and a dream person.”

Netflix has found a new Roderick Usher to replace Frank Langella.  Following a misconduct investigation that led to the 84-year-old Langella being fired from the upcoming limited series The Fall of the House of Usher, Bruce Greenwood has been announced as Langella's replacement, Netflix has confirmed to E! Bruce Greenwood, one of the stars of Fox’s The Resident, is joining Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.

Greenwood replaces Frank Langella in a recasting after the streamer fired the Oscar-nominated actor earlier this month, as revealed by Deadline. Langella was the subject of an investigation that found Langella had been involved in unacceptable conduct on set.

Netflix’s eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan, which based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, was about halfway through production, and the plan is to reshoot the scenes already filmed by Langella with Greenwood in the role of Roderick Usher.

Greenwood is perhaps best known for starring as John F. Kennedy in Thirteen Days, and he also featured in Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House.

Bruce Greenwood is joining “The Fall of the House of Usher” series at Netflix, taking over the role previously held by Frank Langella.

Langella exited the series earlier in April after it was reported that he was under investigation for misconduct on the set, which it was later confirmed involved making an inappropriate joke to a female co-star.

Greenwood will now star in the series as Roderick Usher, the head of the Usher family in creator Mike Flanagan’s modern re-telling of the Edgar Allan Poe story. The show draws on other Poe works as well. Along with Greenwood, the main cast also includes Mary McDonnell, Carl Lumbly, Mark Hamill and Carla Gugino.

For the holiday-themed horror anthology 13 Slays Till X-Mas, a group of filmmakers came together to deck the halls with carnage and ghoul-tide cheer. One of those filmmakers was Sean Blevins, who directed the segment “Don’t Kill Santa on Christmas,” and while it was his first foray into the world of holiday horrors, Blevins was already well-versed in the realm of anthological filmmaking.

Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Blevins about his involvement with 13 Slays Till X-mas, and he chatted about what inspired him to become a filmmaker, his thoughts on anthological horror, what he hoped to create with his segment in 13 Days, “Don’t Kill Santa on Christmas,” and more.

“A Death in the Family” is probably one of the most well known Batman stories of all time. With Netflix going hard on interactive movies like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, it was only a matter of time before other studios started experimenting with them. Now, DC’s animated movie division has figured out a way to use the format to make a true-to-life adaptation. With Batman: Death in the Family, a new animated short film, the fans will get decide whether Robin (aka Jason Todd) lives or dies.

Announced by IGN, the movie version of Death in the Family will be fully interactive and let viewers choose one of multiple, branching fates for Jason Todd. It’s also a rough prequel to Batman: Under the Red Hood, one of the more successful comic adaptations in the DC Animated line. Kevin Conway has died. He was 77.

The beloved actor died on Wednesday of a heart attack, multiple outlets, including Deadline, reported.

A rep for the late star did not immediately respond to People’s request for comment.

Conway is best known for his roles in the 1993 film Gettysburg, Thirteen Days, Stark Trek and Invincible.

Born in New York City in 1942, Conway’s big break came in 1972 when he starred in Slaughterhouse Five as Roland Weary.

The film tells the story, based on the iconic novel of the same name by Kurt Vonnegut, of a World War II soldier who is abducted by aliens.

Kevin Conway, known for his roles in films like “Gettysburg” and ‘Thirteen Days,” died Wednesday of a heart attack. He was 77.

Conway’s manager confirmed the news to TheWrap. Conway’s first major screen role was the 1972 film “Slaughterhouse Five,” based on the novel by Kurt Vonnegut. He then went on to star in the 1988 film “Funny Farm,” as well as the 2000 historical drama “Thirteen Days” and the 2006 Disney film “Invincible.”

His other credits include “Civil War Duology: Gods and Generals,” and in 1987, he directed the independent film “The Sun and the Moon.”

Kevin Conway, a veteran actor known for his work in Gettysburg, Thirteen Days and Invincible, among others, died Wednesday of a heart attack, his publicist told Deadline. He was 77.

New York City-born Conway worked as an Ibm sales analyst before becoming an actor at age 24. He went on to a decades-long career with dozens of credits in film, television and on the stage. His first major screen role was playing Roland Weary in the 1972 film Slaughterhouse Five, based on the Kurt Vonnegut novel. He went on to play Crum Petree, the insane mailman in the 1988 film Funny Farm; Frank Papale in the 2006 Disney football drama Invincible; and General Curtis LeMay in the 2000 historical drama Thirteen Days. He also played the fictional Sgt. Buster Kilrain in Ron Maxwell’s 1993 epic Gettysburg (see photo above) and its 2003 follow-up Gods and Generals.

It can be a dignified role, and many times the actor has to be able to exhibit certain qualities we would traditionally associate with the Us head of state. Variety has exclusively learned that Joe Morton, Jessica Walter, Joe Pantoliano, M. Emmet Walsh, James Cromwell, and Bruce Greenwood will be honored at this year’s Carney Awards.

Named in honor of the late Art Carney, the Carney Awards were launched four years ago by radio personality Elvis Duran to celebrate Hollywood’s leading character actors.

“Art Carney is the gold standard,” Duran said in a statement. “We are so humbled to honor these actors in his name, forever enshrining them in a character actor ‘hall of fame.’ This is the only production in all of Hollywood to do so. These amazing men and women deserve to be recognized.”

Patton Oswalt will host this year’s festivities, which take place on Oct. 28 at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica.

Christopher Lawford, a veteran actor and activist whose uncles were Ted, Robert and President John Kennedy and was the son of Peter Lawford, has died. He was 63. His cousin Kerry Kennedy announced the news on social media but gave no details:

Lawford had dozens of film and TV credits during a 30-year acting career. He appeared in features ranging from Impulse and The Doors to Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Thirteen Days — a Cuban Missile Crisis tale that featured his uncles JFK and Rfk as characters. He also guested on such popular TV series as Frasier, Silk Stalkings, Chicago Hope and The O.C. He also appeared on the daytime soaps All My Children and General Hospital.

Taraji P Henson leads a strong ensemble in Hidden Figures, a story of Nasa's past that makes for compelling and important cinema.

Cinema is good at this. At finding little known stories, and shining a beacon of light on them. In the case of Hidden Figures, arriving in UK cinemas off the back of Oscar nominations and a $100m+ gross at the Us box office, author Margot Lee Shetterly got there first; it’s her best seller that’s the basis of this excellent film. The movie adaptation does it proud.

The story here focuses on the space race in the early 1960s, specifically the moment where it looked as if Russia had firmly seized the initiative. As Nasa was struggling to get an American into space, Russia was having far more success, and the pressure was duly on.

When you watch "McFarland, USA," the wonderful new Disney sports movie about a coach who, in 1987, took a group of untested kids in California (mostly sons of migrant field workers) and turned them into track champions, it's hard to imagine that Kevin Costner, who plays the coach, hasn't been in one of these films before.
