Babylon 5 is a slightly more dystopian series than other shows like Star Trek. There's constant tension between the humans and the alien ambassadors, as well as military conflicts occurring throughout the series' run. It's often tragic at times while exploring themes of loss, betrayal, personal demons, nationalism and redemption.
As the series progresses, the crew of Babylon 5 finds itself pitted against an increasingly totalitarian Earth government. Themes of nationalism vs tolerance drive the remainder of the series, echoing our current times.
