Hrishikesh Mukherjee dedicated this film "To the memory of K.L. Saigal and Mukesh". The film, which explored the relationship of an aspiring singer with his father, was released a few months after Mukesh's death in August 1976.
In Filmfare interview 1988 Hrishikesh Mukherjee claimed that the film bombed as he showed Amitabh Bachchan a classical singer when he had an image of action hero as angry young man.
The movie was one of the biggest disasters. Soon after its release, the film-maker re-shot some portions of the film on 15 April 1977 at Mohan Studios, but that didn't change the fate of the film.
Dedicated in memory of Mukesh who passed away the year before during a concert tour in the Detroit area.
After the film flopped, Amitabh told Hrishikesh that he didn't have to pay him. He knew lots of money was lost. Hrishikesh insisted he pay him because Amitabh already was charging less than his market price.
