There’s more than meets the eye at the box office this weekend.
Paramount and Hasbro Entertainment’s “Transformers One,” the franchise’s first fully animated film since 1986, has made $3.36 million in Thursday previews at the box office.
The family-friendly film, directed by Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”), is expected to make between $30 million and $40 million in its opening weekend, enough to take down Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and claim the box office crown. Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice” sequel, another follow-up to a beloved ’80s film, has been the top movie for the past two weeks and is on track to add $25 million in its third weekend.
With a $75 million budget, “Transformers One” should be able to roll out to a profit thanks to its positive reviews and well-received new take on the fan-favorite IP. Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry star in the film as younger versions of Optimus Prime and Megatron,...

Filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are on quite the creative tear right now. The film follows Lars Hammar, Filip Hammar’s father, who after 40 years as a beloved French teacher in Köping is retiring. But instead of a “third age” with travel, wine and experiences together with his wife, he becomes passive and tired. Filip and Fredrik take Lars to his beloved France and let him revisit the places he loves. By making the same road trip that the family used to make when Filip was a child, and staging some of life’s most beautiful moments, they hope to rekindle Lars’ spark.

Denmark has selected Magnus von Horn’s period drama The Girl With the Needle as its nominee for Best International Feature at the 2025 Oscars.
Set in Copenhagen in 1919, the feature stars Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday, Godland) as Karoline, a young seamstress who is left high and dry when her wealthy lover (Joachim Fjelstrup) gets her pregnant but refuses to marry her. When she finds herself unemployed and expecting, Karoline has the choice of two bad options: Give herself an abortion with a knitting needle or work with the shady backstreet adoption agency.
The Girl With the Needle premiered in competition in Cannes and had its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month. The strong critical reception for the film — THR‘s review called it a “dark, urgently timely Danish drama” that “builds to a devastating climax, taut as piano wire” — as well as the timely subject...

Arty 2018 Indian folklore horror film “Tumbbad” has belatedly found new life at the box office. Its 2024 rerelease in India has grossed $1.5 million and counting.
This success compares with the film’s initial $2 million global haul six years ago and breathes new energy into what has become a cult favorite.
“Tumbbad,” which follows a greedy village boy’s pursuit of a cursed ancestral treasure guarded by the devil, was the first Indian film to open the Venice Critics’ Week in 2018. It went on to win a brace of awards at Sitges among many other accolades. The project, an India-Sweden co-production, was shot over four monsoon seasons and took six years to complete.
Actor-producer Sohum Shah has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, with production set to begin in 2025. “The script is ready, took us six years to perfect it,” Shah told Variety. “We cracked the idea with massive difficulty...

Emile Hirsch isn’t mincing words when it comes to his scrapped John Belushi biopic.
Back in 2013, Hirsch was cast to portray the late comedian and “Saturday Night Live” star. Steve Conrad (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”) was set to direct. However, the lack of funding led to the project falling apart.
Now, Hirsch is revealing the misguided advice the director gave him before the film was even greenlit.
“I was a little bit torn [about signing on],” Hirsch said during THR‘s “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast. “I had a conversation with the director at one point, and he was talking about the weight gain. This is how stupid this guy was: He was like, ‘Just gain the weight and then we’ll make the movie.’”
He added, “And I’m like, ‘Gain the weight and then we’ll make the movie? How about let’s make the movie and then I’ll gain the weight!

Did you know that Chris Pine's dad, actor Robert Pine, played a super-tiny role on "The Office" as the father of John Krasinski's Jim Halpert? You probably didn't — but on a recent podcast, stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey discussed the elder Pine's time on their set.
In the 109th episode of "Office Ladies" — a recap podcast about the hit NBC mockumentary sitcom — Fischer and Kinsey tackled the first half of season 6's "Niagara," which centers around the wedding of Jim and Pam (Fischer). "This is where we are going to meet Jim's parents for the first time," Fischer says as the two discuss the scene featuring the couple's rehearsal dinner. "We have Betsy Halpert, played by Perry Smith, and Gerald Halpert, played by Robert Pine, who is the father of actor Chris Pine."
"People were so excited," Kinsey said, and Fischer agreed: "We were a little bit excited.

When recommended a beach-read by a roommate he doesn’t want, the academic Judge Stefan Mortensen (Geoffrey Rush) scoffs, “All those books say the same thing.”
10 years after Julianne Moore won her Oscar for “Still Alice,” moviegoers could argue something similar about an indie drama casting an elite actor as a dementia patient in rapid decline. Those audiences will be the least prepared for “The Rule of Jenny Pen” and may feel its singular wrath stronger than most. That’s an enviable position to be in for one of recent memory’s more unusual thrillers — even if its lack of narrative convention veers more vexing in the end.

This time around, it's the disturbing and tragic story of Lyle and Erik Menéndez, two brothers who are serving life in prison for the murder of their parents. "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" just dropped on Netflix yesterday, but according to viewership data site FlixPatrol, it's already the most-watched show on Netflix in the United States.
Netflix admittedly seems to be in a dry spell with its TV offerings lately, as "Monsters" is beating out inexplicable hit "Emily in Paris," two-week-old Nicole Kidman vehicle "The Perfect Couple," and a handful of reality and documentary offerings like "The Circle," "Selling Sunset," and "Worst Ex Ever," among other shows. Howard Stern and Donald Trump were locked in a war of words this week after the SiriusXM radio host shared some blunt opinions about Trump supporters. Stern said that he has no respect for Americans who vote for Trump for president, which prompted Trump to claim Stern “went woke” and lost radio listeners as a result.
“This whole idea of you like me, you are good, and if you don’t, you are bad… I’ve been the victim of this,” Stern said during a recent episode of “The Howard Stern Show” (via The Daily Beast). “I don’t agree with Trump politically, I don’t think he should be anywhere near the White House. I don’t hate the guy. I hate the people who vote for him. I think they’re stupid. I do. I’ll be honest with you, I have no respect for you.”

Spoilers for "Transformers One" follow.
The ultimate villain of "Transformers One" winds up being, of course, Megatron (voiced by Brian Tyree Henry). Initially a harmless miner named D-16, the future Megatron's belligerence sparks a schism with his best friend, Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth). By the film's ending, Orion has ascended to become Optimus Prime, while Megatron is on track to become his infamous Decepticon warlord self.
Since "Transformers One" is about Megatron's fall from decent bot to tyrant, most of the film features a different villain. This antagonist is the catalyst for both Optimus Prime and Megatron's rise. Who is it? Sentinel Prime (Jon Hamm), ruler of planet Cybertron and a great big fraud!
Sentinel plays the part of a benevolent leader making tough decisions for an energy-starved society, who nonetheless finds time to give his people bread and circuses. But he sits at the head of a fierce caste...

Even in this age of volume stages and limitless digital tools, there are some things that simply cannot be filmed. Or at least, film can’t capture the totality of them. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have to be high on that list, though atomic imagery has informed everything from “Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind” to “Godzilla Minus One.” To tell even a part of the story of either bombing is an extreme challenge. Yet that is exactly what Episode 5 of “Pachinko” Season 2 does with the opening of “Chapter 13.”
The Apple TV+ series threads a very fine needle, making some stylistic choices and setting some rules for itself in order to have its depiction of Nagasaki stand apart from the rest of the series and yet not feel like some foggy, moralizing history lesson. The most obvious choice is that the 13-minute sequence unfolds in black and white,...

“The Terminator” may have put James Cameron on the Hollywood map in 1984, but forty years on, the film’s production values still irk him. EW reports (via Empire) that Cameron still has quibbles with his breakout film. Not surprising to hear from a director who loves to revisit his movies and tinker with their remasters, but when is James Cameron ever satisfied with success?

“I don’t think of it as some Holy Grail, that’s for sure,” Cameron told Empire in an interview for the sci-fi film’s 40th anniversary.

“Transformers One,” the animated reboot from Paramount/Hasbro and director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”), leverages the format as never before with a brand new handmade look and an emphasis on emotional performance that helps us better connect with the robots. Also, transformations are key as homages to the original toys and the ’80s G1 cartoon series, with every piece of the robot having a corresponding place on the vehicle.
This plays into the origin story of Cybertron and the roots of its destruction by focusing on the friendship between lowly miners Orion Pax (Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry). They eventually transform into the legendary Autobots Optimus Prime and Megatron, only to become bitter enemies divided by optimism and anger.
Ilm was tasked with the animation (only its third feature following “Ultraman: Rising” and the Oscar-winning “Rango”), overseen by VFX supervisor Frazer Churchill and animation supervisor Stephen King.

Matt and Mara presents a familiar premise—two old friends with an unresolved romantic connection reconnect years after their lives have diverged—but Canadian writer-director Kazik Radwanski turns this potentially contrived narrative into an organic examination of interpersonal dynamics that’s tailored to the strengths of his performers and longtime creative collaborators Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson. When Matt (Johnson) grabs the attention of creative writing professor Mara (Campbell) right before she’s about to start class, it’s clear both are looking to break out of their ruts. Mara is out of sync with her musician husband Samir (Mounir Al Shami) amidst the daily […]

The future is now, old man. When director Danny Boyle's horror classic "28 Days Later" first released in the United States back in June of 2003, the now-ubiquitous piece of tech known as the iPhone still remained almost exactly four years away from debuting. In the decades since, artists have found some unique ways to put these phones through their paces -- everything from music videos to feature-length movies have now been touted as being shot entirely on iPhones. The appeal is rather self-explanatory, with the idea being that storytellers of this tech-savvy generation need little more than ambition, creativity, and an iPhone to become genuine filmmakers in their own right. Forget all those stuffy (and exclusive) film schools or nepo-baby connections, because now anyone can shoot a movie with the most common smartphone of all.
That's the feel-good story associated with the news that the long-awaited zombie sequel, "28 Years Later,...

On the set of “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Joaquin Phoenix stayed in full makeup even when the cast was workshopping a scene. That left one unsuspecting parent in full panic mode.
“Joaquin suggested, as a joke, that we FaceTime my mum and scare her,” recalls Harry Lawtey, who
plays Harvey Dent, the courtroom nemesis of the titular maniac. “My mum was in England, so it was quite late, and she was getting ready for bed. And I said, ‘Hello,’ and then I brought the phone up to my face, and Joaquin put his head on my shoulder. My mum screamed, ran away and woke up my dad.”
Terrified mums notwithstanding, Lawtey says Phoenix put on “a master class” every day that left
the 27-year-old Brit in awe.
“To watch him do that laugh and to see the effect on him — on everyone — blew my mind,” Lawtey says. “He would be coughing after each take.

Kids of the 1990s know Jonathan Taylor Thomas quite well. The actor began his professional career at age eight, playing the title puppy in the animated series "The Adventures of Spot." He first appeared on-screen playing Kevin Brady in a failed "Brady Bunch" spinoff called "The Bradys" in 1990. The following year, he was cast as the ultra-cool and super-precocious Randy on the hit sitcom "Home Improvement." That series was a massive success, and made Thomas a household name. Thomas appeared in 178 of the show's 204 episodes, and he became a teenybopper icon, regularly gracing the cover of oversaturated tweener mags like Bop and Tiger Beat.
During his time on "Home Improvement," Thomas also stepped away to appear in multiple high-profile feature films, perhaps most notably playing the voice of the young Simba in 1994's "The Lion King." He was a take-charge youth in "Man of the House," and also played Tom...

Eight years after Grace VanderWaal won “America’s Got Talent,” people still see her as the bashful 12-year-old girl from Kansas who floored everyone with her ukulele-playing and contemplative songs.
“I had the weirdest experience recently,” VanderWaal, now 20, tells Variety over Zoom from L.A., the blunt bangs of her tween years replaced by a sleek platinum bob. She recounts how, on a night out with friends, she crossed paths with a woman coming out of the bathroom.
“She was like, ‘You’re a woman! You’re a grown-up!’” VanderWaal says, mimicking the tipsy fan’s shock. “I was like literally gentle-parenting her through this, but she wouldn’t get over it. She couldn’t handle it.”
Lately, VanderWaal has been running into that kind of reaction — fans who can’t stop seeing her as a symbol of the purity and innocence of youth — a lot, even though she’s long...

The dam broke. That’s how several artificial intelligence experts who spoke to IndieWire described the news of Lionsgate’s partnership with AI research firm Runway. While the deal is the first of its kind with a major Hollywood studio, it’s already likely that other studios will follow suit. One source speculated that almost all studios are weighing the option, but are reluctant to go public.
Lionsgate was also reluctant to explain why they’re heavily investing in allowing Runway to build exclusive AI models on its own film and TV library. Lionsgate vice chair Michael Burns cited its uses in the “pre-production and post-production process” and that AI can be a tool for “augmenting, enhancing, and supplementing our current operations.”
That could mean almost anything, but Reid Southern, a concept artist on the original “The Hunger Games,” had a clear take. “This is the first step in trying to replace artists and filmmakers,...

The first reactions to the newest installment in director Damien Leone's blood-soaked, low-budget slasher-comedy franchise are in, but is "Terrifier 3" good enough to get fans into the gory Christmas spirit in October? If you're already into the "Terrifier" franchise, the answer based on early reviews is almost certainly "yes." The film made its Fantastic Fest debut on Thursday, and audiences are already describing it as the most sickening, creatively evil installment in the franchise yet.
There's no word on whether anyone passed out or threw up at the screening the way plenty of people reportedly did while seeing "Terrifier 2" in theaters, but then again, fans of the famed genre festival tend to have strong stomachs. Instead, they came away with praise to spare after witnessing "Terrifier 3" in all its apparent gory glory. /Film's own Jacob Hall calls the sequel "one of the nastiest horror movies ever made" in his positive review,...

Spoilers for "Transformers One" to follow.
Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime, the best cartoon hero performance next to Kevin Conroy as Batman. But while Cullen's many performances as the Autobot leader make him inseparable from the character, he's not the only one who's played the part. Some Prime voice actors, like Jon Bailey and Jake Fushee, do Cullen impressions. Others offer more distinctive takes, like Garry Chalk as Optimus Primal in "Beast Wars" or David Kaye in "Transformers Animated." Now, there's a new member of this pantheon: Chris Hemsworth, who voices a young Optimus Prime (then known as "Orion Pax") in the new animated film "Transformers One."
Reactions to the casting in "Transformers One" was mixed. Using celebrity performers instead of seasoned voice actors? Ugh. Does Hemsworth shake off the skepticism and fill these big shoes? He can obviously play a superhero; he's been acting as Thor for 13+ years now.

George Clooney is admitting that he would have preferred a wide theatrical release for Apple original film “Wolfs.”
Clooney co-stars with Brad Pitt in the comic thriller that debuted at Venice 2024. It's literally impossible to recommend "Terrifier 3," a horror movie so nasty and nightmarish that it's bound to be an endurance test for even genre buffs with the most hardened nerves and strong stomachs. But it's also easy to admire "Terrifier 3" and what writer/director Damien Leone has accomplished. Many horror movies aim to be transgressive, to shock and disgust, but here's one that actually manages to pull it off. It pushes your buttons with such deadly force that your inner machinery breaks –– you cannot believe what you're seeing. One can never accuse this movie, or this franchise, of taking the easy path or softening its edges to make for a safer, more palatable experience. Here's a horror movie that declares itself to be dangerous, and actually delivers on the promise.
So, all of this asks a pretty big question: Who the heck are these movies for? The gore-soaked...

Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

This post contains spoilers for "Transformers One."
"Transformers One," the fully-animated prequel, has arrived. Set on Cybertron, home planet of these autonomous robots, the movie depicts how Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) went from best friends -- and nobodies named Orion Pax and D-16 -- to leading two sides of a galactic civil war. (Read /Film's "Transformers One" review here to find out whether or not it succeeds.)
Even with its brief 104-minute runtime, "Transformers One" shows the beginnings of the other most important conflict in Megatron's life: The one with his future second-in-command, the Decepticons' treacherous Air Commander Starscream.
Starscream's defining quality has always been a desire to overthrow Megatron and supplant him as Decepticon leader. He's too ambitious and egomaniacal to accept serving under someone else, but in the end, he can never surpass Megatron as a warrior or leader. Starscream is so synonymous...

U.K. filmmaker Benjamin Barfoot is poised to break out at Fantastic Fest — the Austin home to the best in new genre cinema — this year with “Daddy’s Head.” The film, which also heads to Shudder in October in time for Halloween, follows a boy who is visited by an unexplainable creature. And one that seems to mimic a terrifying version of his recently dead father. The cast includes Julia Brown, Rupert Turnbull, Charles Aitken, and Nathaniel Martello-White. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.
Here’s the official synopsis: “In the wake of his father’s untimely death, a young boy is left in the eerie solitude of a sprawling country estate with his newly widowed stepmother. His stepmother, struggling to navigate the overwhelming task of parenthood, grows distant, leaving their fragile bond at risk of collapse. Amidst the growing tension, the boy begins to hear unsettling sounds echoing through the corridors.

Fantastic Fest 2024 kicked off in Austin last night, which also means, more or less, that horror movie season has officially started. “Daddy’s Home” is a departure in genre for the self-taught Barfoot, his first horror film after splashing onto the British indie cinema scene with his 2017 directorial debut “Double Date.” But the set-up for the film sounds like one honed by a horror regular: a young boy grieving for his recently deceased father discovers his house is haunted …by a creature with eerie similarities to his Dad.

Doctor Victor Von Doom will soon be making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2026's "Avengers: Doomsday," with Marvel Studios having combined two Hail Marys into one by recasting former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. as Doom. But in the meantime, there are plenty of great Marvel comic books about Doctor Doom to read. If you can't wait two years to see him fight the Avengers, then next month's "Avengers" #19 will have you covered.
Writer Jed MacKay has been making changes in the Marvel Universe. In his last "Avengers" issue (no. 18), Thor went on a leave of absence while Storm of the X-Men joined the team as their new Thunder God.
Meanwhile, MacKay's recent crossover event "Blood Hunt" was a convergence of his three major Marvel titles -- "Avengers," "Doctor Strange," and "Moon Knight" -- and featured these books' heroes united to fight a vampire invasion. In the event's fifth and final issue,...

Hey kids! Are you ready to learn about a terrifying, real-life monster called Churn? Math class just got real.
In the fast-paced, slim-margined streaming industry, lowering churn is the new growing-subscribers — and soon, bundling alone won’t be enough. Forward-looking streamers already need The Next Big Idea ™ to retain their user base. Their solution, according to the researchers at global-entertainment firm Ampere Analysis, are in the play room fighting over Barbie dolls as I type this.
Though these micro-est economics students may not use their own allowance money on the family’s suite of SVOD services, they have as much influence over the lineup — if not more — than others. As any parent already knows, we’re way past the outdated “Happy wife, happy life” nonsense: The only real chance of having a happy life is whatever rhymes with “Occupied kids.”
