Rihanna now has a host of blue pals to join her journey as Smurfette in the animated The Smurfs Movie for Paramount Pictures and Paramount Animation.
During the studio’s presentation at CinemaCon on Thursday, Paramount chief Brian Robbins announced that an all-star cast has been set for the film including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, Jp Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. Or, as Robbins put it, “Pretty much the rest of the Screen Actors Guild.” He also praised Rihanna as “the most legendary Smurfette ever.”
The news comes one year after Rihanna turned up to surprise CinemaCon attendees on the Colosseum stage inside Caesars Palace to announce that she had signed on to tackle the project as a triple threat by providing the voice of Smurfette, producing alongside Ryan Harris,...

The Oscar-frontrunning Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the big winner at Asifa-Hollywood’s 51st Annie Awards (held February 17 at UCLA’s Royce Hall), grabbing seven awards, topped by best animated feature. As a 66 percent Oscar predictor, the Annie win bodes well for Sony and producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The other “Spider-Verse” awards were for FX, character design, direction, music, production design, and editorial.
The Oscar-nominated dark horse, “Robot Dreams” (Neon), from Pablo Berger, won best independent feature, and “War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko” (ElectroLeague) took best short. The prestige short got a boost in its race for the Oscar. It’s directed by Pixar alum Dave Mullins and executive produced by Sean Ono Lennon, in partnership with Peter Jackson and his Wētā FX Limited animation team.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been around since the ‘80s. They’ve starred in several animated TV series, live-action movies from Jim Henson costumes to CGI turtles, and two animated films. The latest, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, reinvents the comic book heroes in several ways.
Perhaps taking a cue from the Spider-Verse movies, Mutant Mayhem uses an animation style that is not a straightforward depiction of its world. You can tell it’s New York and there are turtles and other mutants, but the animation combines styles like teenage sketchbooks to create a livelier viewing experience.
The film sticks to the turtles’ origins, mutated by green ooze along with their father figure, the rat named Splinter. The experiments by scientist Baxter Stockman (voice of Giancarlo Esposito) led to the creation of some familiar mutants like Bebop (Seth Rogen) and Rocksteady (John Cena), along with some new...

Don't let anyone tell you differently: 2023 was one helluva year for the movies.
Even as the industry struggles to recover in the wake of pandemic that nearly torpedoed everything, and even as reliable franchises started to sputter a bit, the past 12 months proved that movies have, if you'll allow us to break out the old cliche, never been better. Two of the biggest studio releases of the year were as thrilling as anything we've ever seen in a multiplex. More than a few animated movies pushed their mediums forward in dramatic ways. Comedies got weirder and more personal. Horror got more raw and experimental. And some of the most reliable names in Hollywood history once again produced masterpieces.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem writers Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Jeff Rowe said it was important that their turtles spoke like real teenagers. That meant brushing up on the latest crazes, like TikTok.
“We’re trying to make these ninja turtles sound like you and talk like you and reference the same TikTok videos that you watch that I’ve never seen that I don’t understand at all,” Rogen said on a panel for the film at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles. “I don’t know who the Ocky guy is but apparently the Ocky guy is hilarious. Tell him you love bacon egg and cheese and that’s a whole thing.”
Though the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics have been adapted as a weekday afternoon TV show, live-action movies in the ‘90s and 2010s, and a 2007 animated movie, Mutant Mayhem is the first incarnation to cast teenagers.

My favorite of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a kid was Donatello. I cannot remember exactly why, but I think it started with the fact his name also began with a “D.” But really all four were mythic as far as my preschool was concerned: rad dudes who lived in a sewer with a giant rat that taught them Ninjitsu between late night binges of NYC pizza.
It wasn’t until many years later, I realized how weird this concept must’ve seemed to adults. And kind of gross. It seems directors Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears never forgot, though, nor have Rowe’s co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg; their latest reinvention of the amphibious IP is happily weird and gross to the point of renewed novelty.

All right, perhaps this unifying theme for the 2023 Summer movie season is nostalgia. Sure, the multiplex is usually filled with sequels and reboots this time of year, but at this moment the studios appear to be trying to exploit the treasured properties of our youth, over several different generations. Last weekend it was a beloved ride/attraction which has been a staple at the happiest place(s) on Earth for over fifty years. However the box office (and WB record-breaker) for the last couple of weeks stretches back another ten years to engulf theatre lobbies in a title wave of pink (“This Barbie’s gonna’ bust a billion bucks at the box office”). Now, this Wednesday’s (gettin’ a jump on the weekend) new release also has a toy connection, but that merch arrived well after the characters’ comic book debut in 1984 (which spawned a TV cartoon a couple of years later). Oh,...

While scores of Tmnt fans have already seen Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, thanks to the magic of preview screenings, others have reserved a table at their favorite pizza joint in anticipation of the film’s release on Wednesday, August 2! Still, a pie decorated with pepperoni, anchovies, and banana peppers isn’t the only way to celebrate the Fab Four’s return. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies are proud to present a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem featurette exploring the evolution of the Turtles franchise!
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem featurette begins with Tmnt co-creator Kevin Eastman recalling the night the characters were conceived. In a summer where the off-the-boards success of original movies including Barbie and Oppenheimer is all the rage, the seventh-or so feature film iteration of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise wasn’t one with great expectations. Except when you read the credit block and discover the co-writers and producers are none other than Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and the director is Jeff Rowe, who most recently was an Oscar nominee for the wildly inventive animated hit The Mitchells vs The Machines.

Since the late ‘80s it seems like every generation has been getting their own version of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” through various TV series and spin-offs, both live-action and animated. So it’s no surprise that the beloved quartet of anthropomorphized mutant turtles who are pizza and martial arts-loving teenagers, receive a makeover on this side of the 2020s, too.
Enter “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” an eager-to-please outing across the sewers and streets of New York City, designed for an era that is still obsessed by origin stories taken from comedic superhero tales like “Deadpool” and recently influenced by the colorful and rule-breaking animation style of the “Spider-Verse” films.
The result is both as original and predictable as you’d expect. In that regard, “Mutant Mayhem” hardly feels like something you’ve never experienced before. But considering how over-exploited this particular IP is, co-directors Jeff Rowe (of...

Marvel Studios and DC’s film studios, along with several actors, will be sitting out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. But the fans are not.
While it’s still early down here in America’s Finest City, attendees are already lining up, not simply for Hall H but for their Wednesday night or Thursday entrance to the trade-show floor. The most fearsome fighting team is back in a new movie, and from what we’re hearing, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is the Tmnt film fans have been waiting for! The latest animated adventure featuring the Heroes in a Half-Shell debuted an unfinished film cut at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Monday, receiving a six-minute standing ovation. According to attendees, the applause was so loud that director Jeff Rowe returned to the stage to bask in the celebratory afterglow.
Speaking with The Wrap, Rowe commented on the momentous occasion, saying, “Being in the room and feeling all the reactions and hearing all the laughter was amazing, but what really stood out to me was to see our movie received and appreciated in that way by a lot of people who really love and care about animation.”
It’s worth noting the version screened at Annecy is a work-in-progress film cut.

Can you kick it? The brand-spankin’ new trailer for Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movie’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem has been released. This new continuity comes from “permanent teenager” Seth Rogen, who had announced that he intended to aim for the teenage aspect of our beloved heroes in a half-shell. It looks to be their youngest interpretation yet, as the foursome display a very child-like excitement and wonder while being down for some good ol’ adolescent mischief. It just so happens that they have ninja skills and can utilize them to foil some of the city’s criminal activities.
The official synopsis from Paramount and Nickelodeon reads,
After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate,...

There are more than 4,000 attendees this year at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, and everyone who entered through the Caesars Palace lobby saw the same sight: four statues accessorized with bold-colored eye masks and skateboards propped at their feet. Just a few days after the all-star voice cast for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was revealed, the first trailer for the upcoming CGI-animated reboot has arrived. Coming from producer and “permanent teenager” Seth Rogen, the latest adventure looks to take a unique direction with the iconic heroes in a half-shell.
The new preview immediately reveals an animation style owing more than a little to the Spider-Verse series from Sony, though with less of a pop-art feel and more of a gritty NYC vibe. As soon as the Turtles themselves speak, you’ll also notice that these rambunctious reptiles appear much younger than fans may be used to; while the ’90s and Michael Bay-led live-action Tmnt tales arguably show us 16-19-year-old turtles, Mutant Mayhem seems to be focusing on a burgeoning group of heroes who likely don’t have their driver licenses.
