CBS’ John Dickerson fantasized on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” about a silver lining to Trump’s incoming presidency.
Dickerson – the chief political analyst for CBS News – was initially asked who the leader of the Democratic Party is, now that President Joe Biden is on his way out of the White House and Kamala Harris lost the 2024 election. He told Colbert that the race to figure that out might bring back a “working democracy” to America.
“I think it’s a footrace to try and figure out who’s going to speak for the party. Bernie Sanders, I don’t know if you saw it, issued a scathing press release that basically said, ‘Yeah, the Democratic Party has ignored working people, and so, of course this is the outcome that would happen.’”
He continued, “And just if you want to fantasize for me for a moment about a working...

TV news insiders can tell you the moment that the world changed for high-priced anchor talent: Nov. 29, 2017, the day Matt Lauer was fired from NBC’s “Today” amid shocking allegations of sexual misconduct. As a quick fix, NBC News turned to Hoda Kotb to replace Lauer as co-anchor alongside Savannah Guthrie for the show’s primary 7-9 a.m. broadcast. And then the network braced for impact.
But the crash never came. “Today” ratings actually improved post-Lauer, who had been making around $20 million annually. That’s a testament to the show and the strength of Kotb and Guthrie as a team. And it was most definitely a wake-up call for the industry.
“You had this kind of myth built up that if this person leaves, the show is doomed,” one news veteran notes says. “It’s driven by the idea you’re afraid that if he leaves, everything comes crumbling down.

TV News’ Big Squeeze: Suddenly, Local and National Anchors All Play for Same Team, Stream and Screen
In a bid to examine the difficulties Americans face in getting their hands on lifesaving drug narcan, NBC News in February turned to what would once be seen as an unlikely resource: reporters at many of its parent company’s local stations.
Over a three-week period, correspondents from Wbal in Baltimore, Wdtn in Dayton, Ohio and Wowt in Omaha, among others, visited 64 drugstores in 15 states and Washington, D.C., all to determine whether the nasal spray that can help reverse the effects of an opioid overdose could be found easily by those who might desperately need it.
Such cooperation “is definitely a cultural change” in relations between a media company’s local and national news operations, says Valari Staab, the chairman of NBCUniversal’s local stations, adding: “In the past, the networks and stations have missed some real opportunities.”
With new economic pressures weighing on the media sector — and the...

In a stark departure from its own corporate precedent and the usual circle-the-wagons approach of news divisions in crisis, top execs at CBS News parent Paramount Global have publicly disagreed this week.
At the center of the situation was an interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates on CBS Mornings. While co-hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil all sat in on the chat, Dokoupil drew criticism for dominating and pressing Coates on the section of his book, The Message, that criticizes Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. Dokoupil, who is Jewish, challenged Coates on whether he believed the state of Israel had a right to exist.
CBS News brass addressed the matter during a staff call Monday featuring Adrienne Roark, the president of editorial and newsgathering, and Wendy McMahon, president of CBS News and Stations. They told employees that Dokoupil’s questioning did not meet the news division’s “editorial standards.

Adam Verdugo is stepping down as executive producer of CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell amid a pending overhaul of the broadcast.
His final day at CBS News will be September 6, the network confirmed Wednesday.
In a memo to staffers, Verdugo wrote that the “time is right for me to move on to the next chapter. This was not an easy decision to make, but as we know in this business, there is never a ‘right’ time.”
O’Donnell recently announced plans to exit as anchor of the newscast, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois set to take over as lead anchors following the 2024 election. Bill Owens, executive producer of 60 Minutes, will add to his duties as supervising producer of the broadcast. The network said that Verdugo has been assisting in the transition, which will see the CBS Evening News return to New York as its home base after five years in D.

After the network chose to replace Norah O’Donnell with two male anchors on “CBS Evening News,” Katie Couric openly attacked CBS News for being “out of touch.” Despite CBS’s recent efforts to advance women in senior jobs, decision-making authority still resides primarily in the hands of men, as Couric noted in an op-ed for The New York Times.
The irony in CBS’s reorganization—which saw the appointment of more women to managerial roles—was brought to Couric’s attention when the network chose two men, John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois, to anchor the evening newscast. Although she recognized the skill of both men, she thought it strange that during a period of profound social and political transformation, the hosts of CBS’s evening broadcast would be men.

CBS wants to get back in the battle for evening-news viewers with a new take on the format that looks very little like the evening news viewers have come to know.
The network plans to rebuild its long-running “CBS Evening News,” retooling anchors, format and segments in a bid to make the half-hour once led by Walter Cronkite more valuable for modern news viewers who don’t recognize the show as the cultural touchstone it was in the 1960s and 70s.

CBS Evening News will be revamped after the election, with John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois anchoring from New York and leading an ensemble that includes Margaret Brennan regularly leading coverage from Washington, D.C. and Lonnie Quinn providing weather segments.
Norah O’Donnell, who has anchored the newscast for the past five years, announced earlier this week that she is stepping down after the election to serve as a senior correspondent focused on major one-on-one interviews and longform reporting.

Correspondents from the show will be filing for the Evening News “when they have big news to break,” according to a memo that went out to staffers today from Wendy McMahon, the CEO of CBS News and Stations.
