Exclusive: Alex Pettyfer (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) and Karl Markovics (The Counterfeiters) have joined Clive Owen in historical thriller Kristallnacht.

Stefan Ruzowitzky, who teamed with Markovics on 2008 Oscar winner The Counterfeiters, is directing. International Film Trust is selling at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas.

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is heading straight to Prime Video in the UK with a July date now confirmed.

Well, it’s official. Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare won’t be heading to UK cinemas and will premiere on Prime Video at the tail end of July.

We already had a sneaking suspicion this might happen after the film premiered in US cinemas all the way back in April, with no UK release date in sight, but it’s still a tad disappointing. You can watch the film on a smaller screen from 25th July when it’ll be available on Prime Video.

The pair star opposite Alex Pettyfer, Eva De Dominici, Rob Estes and Jessica Michel Serfaty in the film which is currently in production in Puglia, Italy. After wrapping in Puglia, the team moves on to London.

Arclight Films launched international sales during the Cannes Film Festival with domestic sales being handled by Capstone Global. Pia Patatian is producing.

Guy Ritchie, Hollywood’s busiest man, is already setting up his next film. World Of Reel reports that Ritchie’s next film will be called Wife & Dog. The film is heading to the Cannes market in the hopes it’ll find more backing there.

That’s all we really know at this point. World Of Reel mentions that the film is said to tackle the subject of class like his recent Netflix TV show The Gentlemen loosely based on a true story – the top secret Operation Postmaster.

The Snatch director is quickly gaining a reputation as the hardest working filmmaker in Hollywood. In the last five years, Ritchie has released six films and a TV show. He’s also currently filming Fountain Of Youth with Natalie Portman and John Krasinski.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.

From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

The April of genre showers continues with four new wide releases and another expanding nationwide, offering quite a bit of variety. Can any of the take down reigning champion “Civil War”? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

First up is the new horror film, “Abigail,” from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, who directed the last two “Scream” movies. This one involves a band of criminals who kidnap the young daughter of a powerful crime lord to get money from him, holding her in a mansion where they learn that … she’s a vampire! The filmmakers reunite with Melissa Barrera from their “Scream” films, who is joined by Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Giancarlo Esposito, Matthew Goode and the title character is played by young Alisha Weir.

Universal does love its vampires. After all, it was the studio that made “Dracula” famous, going all the way back...

The title is the worst thing about this lively, fun and largely true World War II adventure The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is inspired by the Damien Lewis book of the same name but extending it to add: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops.

Guy Ritchie has taken this story of an illicit black ops crew, mostly of the prisoner variety, who with the permission of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) was commissioned and put into action (a ragtag group of warriors if ever there was one) in order to sink, as it were, Nazi Germany’s U-boats operation that had been preventing the U.S. from entering the war in Europe.

With spring break simmering to 8% K-12 on break, and 1% colleges off, it’s a hodgepodge at the weekend box office until 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes arrives to an expected $50 million-plus opening during the second weekend of May.

A24’s Civil War, which currently counts $27M through Monday after $1.9M yesterday, will need to defend its No. 1 flag from Universal’s Radio Silence-directed genre title Abigail. Both are looking at around $12M apiece. Still, that would rep a 53% decline for Alex Garland’s dystopian, divided America thriller, which would be excellent. Civil War will share Imax auditoriums with Sony/Crunchyroll’s anime Spy x Family Code: White as well as the Nathaniel Kahn-directed documentary Deep Sky.

‘Abigail’

Booked at 3,300 theaters, Abigail stars Melissa Barrera and the late Angus Cloud as well as Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, William Catlett, Kevin Durand as a bunch of kidnappers who opt to abduct 12-year old ballerina Abigail (Alisha Weir). She’s the daughter of a powerful underworld figure, and her ransom is for $50M.

In an isolated mansion, the captors, whose job it is to watch her, start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. The pic will share Plf screens with Lionsgate’s Guy Ritchie-directed The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which is looking at mid single-digits, as well as Spy x Family Code: White, which is looking to do about the same.

Abigail, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, starts previews on Thursday at 5 p.m. Men and women 18-34 are the sweet spot. Reviews for the R-rated pic are currently at 82% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

A $6M-ish opening for the Ritchie movie is in the same realm as The Covenant. The R-rated Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare received an A- CinemaScore during last weekend’s sneaks and will preview at 6 p.m. Thursday before going wide in 2,700 theaters.

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’

The Ritchie-written title is based upon recently declassified files of the British war department and inspired by true events. Pic tells the story of the first-ever special forces organization formed during WWII by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and a small group of military officials including author Ian Fleming. The top-secret combat unit, composed of a motley crew of rogues and mavericks, goes on a daring mission against the Nazis using entirely unconventional and utterly “ungentlemanly” fighting techniques. Ultimately their audacious approach changed the course of the war and laid the foundation for the British Sas and modern black ops warfare. Henry Cavill, Eiza González, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Henry Golding and Cary Elwes star. Some exhibitors believe the movie has a shot at blowing past its estimates. Rt reviews are at 81% fresh.

‘Spy x Family Code: White’

Spy x Family Code: White is booked at 2,000 engagements with 4 p.m. Thursday previews going in 1,870 sites. Pic will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. The Takashi Katagiri-directed movie is the first film installment of the TV series, here with a stand-alone story featuring secret agent <Twilight>, his deadly assassin wife Yor, and their telepathic adopted daughter Anya in an all-new mission. Pic is based on the Harvey- and Eisner Award-nominated manga written and illustrated by Tatsuya Endo. The TV series debuted on April 9, 2022, with the first two seasons available to watch on Crunchyroll.

Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is based on war correspondent Damien Lewis’s book of the same name, which tells the true story of an unsanctioned British military mission to sink the German ships that supplied all of their U-boats around the Spanish island of Fernando Po during World War II. The film also makes a point of announcing that the story comes from documents from Winston Churchill’s first term in office that were declassified in 2016, introducing each shrewd and ruthlessly efficient member of the ragtag crew carrying out this mission with a litany of their qualifications.

Narratively, the film plays out like a traditional historical thriller, yet it turns these men into impossibly proficient, virtually invincible killing machines who dispose of Nazis with such casual ease that they might as well be superheroes. Director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” may be based on secret, real-life WWII commandos, but that didn’t stop him up from upping the Nazi-killing brutality.

In a couple gleefully bloody scenes, Henry Cavill’s character Major Gus March-Phillipps massacres Nazis while sticking his tongue out in a joyful, manic grin. As it turns out, Cavill improvised the scene, which caught viewers’ attention in the action film’s first trailer.

“It was a co-improvisation between Guy and myself,” Cavill told Variety at the film’s New York premiere Monday. “Guy said, ‘I want you to have more fun with it. Stick your tongue out or something.’ And so we did and it stuck, as featured quite well in the trailer. That was the first moment where we decided Gus was going to be slightly unhinged in these moments, and that makes it more fun.”

Cinematic universes may be on the decline, but Guy Ritchie has just stumbled upon the potential for a fun one with his frequently amusing “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” a light and sloppy World War II caper that reimagines Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) as Nick Fury, and a series of rakish, Nazi-killing brutes as his own personal Avengers.

Men on a mission films like “The Guns of the Navarone” might seem to be the more obvious points of reference here, but by the time Churchill is spitting orders at Ian Fleming (“Slow Horses” shitheel Freddie Fox), assigning real-life actress/spy Marjorie Stewart to some “Casablanca” cosplay with a sadistic Nazi commander, and waiting by the phone to hear if his top-secret wrecking crew has managed to sink the German ships that supply Hitler’s fleet of U-boats, saving the world merely seems like the set-up for the bigger and better...

Review: Guy Ritchie has had quite an interesting career over the last decade but he’s really settled into this period/action niche. And I’m all for it. If there’s one thing I’ll never tire of, it’s Nazis being killed in brutal ways. They’re the most one-dimensionally evil bad guy possible. And The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare gives us that in spades with what feels like hundreds of them getting gunned down before our very eyes. It’s absolutely glorious.

With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.
